Deaf Man Dies In New Jersey Hit-and-Run

19-year-old facing slew of charges after fatal crash that killed Deaf FedEx employee in New Jersey.

JERSEY CITY, NJ -- Jersey City police were looking for two people Tuesday night, after an out-of-control vehicle crashed and killed a man waiting at a bus stop.

As CBS2’s Valerie Castro reported, authorities said the stolen sport-utility vehicle killed a man waiting for a bus. A 16-year-old was being questioned late Tuesday.

Confirming that the pedestrian that was fatally struck by a vehicle this morning in Jersey City has been identified as a male in his 30's. The fatality occurred in the immediate area of Communipaw Ave & Kennedy Blvd. Continue to avoid this area as the police investigate.

The crash happened around 4:50 Tuesday morning. The out-of-control SUV slammed into the intersection of Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.

The victim in the incident died instantly after he was hit. On Tuesday night, CBS2 has learned the victim may never even have realized what was about to happen.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s office said police were trying to pull over the stolen vehicle, which was seen speeding and running traffic lights when it slammed into a light post and crashed into a bus shelter.

Umar King, 33, was standing inside waiting for the bus. He wound up thrown down the street and was killed on impact.

A collection of candles paid tribute to King’s memory late Tuesday.

King’s friend, who is hearing-impaired, said King was also hard of hearing and likely did not even know the car was careening toward him.

“The car - too fast, boom,” King’s friend said. “Can’t hear; not hearing.”

“I just saw a person on the floor and that’s it,” added Carmen Rodriguez of Jersey City. “It was sad.”

After the impact, people inside the car were caught on video as they got out and took off running down Kennedy Boulevard.

Prosecutors said the stolen vehicle was speeding and ignoring traffic signals. Police were dispatched to chase it.

“There were three individuals in the suspect vehicle. They fled,” said Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. “One individual was caught, a male 16-year-old. He was detained for questioning.”

The crash destroyed the bus shelter and left debris everywhere.

“Now we don’t even have a bus stop. They took it all. I just feel bad for the family,” Rodriguez said.

The entire corner was ripped apart, and debris was everywhere. Pieces of the bus shelter were thrown in the street and on the sidewalk, and a traffic light was dismantled and bent.

The Prosecutor’s office said it is believed the officers did as they were trained when trying to stop the vehicle.

“It appears at first glance – again, this is all investigation – that officer was following protocol,” Suarez said. “That too is under investigation.”

Police late Tuesday were still searching for the other two people seen in the video running away.

Another driver was also hit by the speeding car. That victim was taken to Jersey City Medical Center with minor injuries and has since been released.

Deaf Man Killed In Alabama Train Accident

Deaf man killed by train accident in Clanton, Alabama.

CLANTON, Alabama -- A man killed Wednesday in a pedestrian-train collision was Deaf and didn’t hear the train coming, according to Clanton Police.

The accident happened Wednesday afternoon at the crossing on 2nd Ave in downtown Clanton. The man has been identified as 62-year-old Danny Wade Reeves of Alabama.

Police say the crossing was equipped with functional crossing bars, lights, and signs at the time of the collision.

“There’s no way he would have heard it. And apparently he just simply didn’t see the train coming,” said Clanton Police Chief Keith Maddox.

Maddox says trains can be dangerous if you do not pay attention to the crossings, and he says those who are hearing impaired need to pay even closer attention to the signals.

“They just need to remind their loved ones to be extra cautious, extra attentive when they reach a railroad crossing because this crossing was well marked. It had the Rs, the lights, everything. So they just need to pay extra attention when they come to those kinds of locations.”

We checked records from the Federal Railroad Administration, which show this is the second incident at this crossing and the first fatal one. The only other report was a train-car collision back in 1978. That collision involved a train and a vehicle. The driver was hurt but survived.

Deaf Canadian Curling Champion Dies

Deaf Manitoba curler, Clifford Beaulieu, 42, sent to hospital after being discovered outside by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The family of a Manitoba man who died after spending the night outdoors is devastated and still has questions about what led him into the cold.

Clifford Beaulieu, 42, was spending time with some friends at a home in the Rural Municipality of St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba. Feb. 4. He left and never returned.

"I know he froze from the elements and that, but why let him leave the house like that, and not, you know, check on him, see where he went?" said Martin Beaulieu, Clifford's brother.

Beaulieu was sent to hospital after being found outdoors by police the next day. He died in hospital.

Martin said the group had been drinking and that Clifford left the house after an argument broke out.

"They told me that he was intoxicated when he left the house, but he was also angry at them and when he left, he just, like, he walked away angry," said Martin. "Still, no matter what, you don't let a person walk out in the cold like that."

Beaulieu was part of a Canada’s National Deaf Curling team. The team will compete in the 2015 Winter Deaflympics in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia - March 28 to April 5, 2015.
