Deaf Jammed - 1000 Ways To Die

"Deaf Jammed" a car thief dies after getting his head caught in the window of a moving car by the Deaf driver.

DETROIT, Michigan -- 1000 Ways To Die: "Deaf Jammed", Way To Die #130, a hearing man, Mickey was a carjacker. But even worse, he only targeted women and he didn't care if they were pregnant or injured or disabled or dying.

This despicable scumbag was stalking a woman walking to her car alone. She got in her car and was about to shut the back window. Mickey saw a chance to make his move. He poked his head and left arm through the window, but, before he could pull the car-door lock the automatic glass window closed on his neck, crushing his windpipe and stopping his ability to breathe.

The woman drove off with Mickey hitching a ride and it is then revealed she is Deaf. His painful gasps for help were heard by no one.

A mile later and a couple of minutes without air left Mickey unconscious. The driver, who was Deaf and therefore, oblivious to his presence, looked in the mirror and saw Mickey's head sticking out of the window. She rolled down the window and Mickey dropped dead on the road. Justice is served... Instant Karma!

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida -- Detectives say it's unclear whether charges will be filed. A man who was killed Thursday in an apparent road-rage incident in Coral Springs was legally Deaf and used sign language to communicate, the victim's friend told Local 10 News on Friday.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"He had that disability. He was hearing impaired, but nonetheless he was a very productive member of society. He worked at a job and he had a normal life as best as it could be," family friend and chaplain, Ken McLymont, said.

Coral Springs police Sgt. Carla Kmiotek said Paul Peterman, 37, of Margate, was airlifted to a hospital after being involved in an altercation with another driver that ended in the area of Atlantic Boulevard and Riverside Drive in Coral Springs.

He was pronounced dead later in the day.

Kmiotek said the other driver, identified as Joshua Tullis, 37, of Coral Springs, fled the scene, but has since contacted detectives.

Kmiotek said he is cooperating with investigators, and it's unclear whether charges will be filed against him.

Authorities have not said how Peterman died, but said that they are still interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence.

Kmiotek said he was not stabbed, nor shot.

Loved ones said Peterman was an Eagle Scout and was involved in theater. He was also a warehouse manager at a professional lighting company and was engaged to be married.

Anyone who witnessed the altercation is asked to call Coral Springs police, or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

How Deaf Drivers Can Be Safe From Police

After Deaf man is killed by cop, here's how hearing impaired drivers can be safe in the United States.

NEW YORK CITY -- The recent fatal shooting of a Deaf driver by a police officer in North Carolina has raised questions about safety for hearing impaired motorists.

Jennifer Labriola, the principal of the New York School for the Deaf who drives to work each day, told Inside Edition through a sign language interpreter that if a hearing impaired driver is pulled over, "you tell the police officer you're Deaf and 'I need to write this down.' You point to your ear."

Uber's In-App Features Aims More Deaf Drivers

Uber's in-app features create job opportunities for Deaf drivers in Canada and the United States.

TORONTO -- As many as 300 drivers in Toronto, use Uber's in-app features, for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, people. For many Uber users, much of the appeal of the ride-hailing service is that most of the transaction can be done through an app, related the story covers New App Features For Deaf Uber Drivers.

But for one Toronto Uber driver, it's about much more than convenience. Shafiul Hoque is a Deaf driver who says thanks to the company's technology-driven approach, he has his first job in more than a decade.

"I heard that they were willing to hire Deaf drivers," Hoque said in an interview aided by an American Sign Language interpreter. "I found that they were actually very accessible."

Hoque says he still remembers his first pick-up. It went smoothly and "communication was not a problem at all."

He credits a set of in-app features that Uber has rolled out specifically for Deaf and HoH drivers to communicate with riders.

Uber says he's now one of at least 300 drivers in Toronto alone who have been using the in-app features on the job for the past year.

How it works - As soon as a trip is requested, drivers using the in-app features will see a flashing light, in addition to getting the usual audio alert. Passengers also receive a notification, to let them know their Uber driver will be Deaf or HoH.

“If I can do it, so can you.” Larry is Deaf and on a mission to follow his dreams. Find out how partnering with Uber made it possible for him to move to LA and support his family while starting a new career.

Passengers also aren't able to call their driver - they can only text and they'll get an additional prompt to make sure they put in their destination.

"Some people have always asked me how I can communicate with people so easily, but with the technology and with the cellular device, I can do that," Hoque said. "That eliminates barriers for all of us."

For Hoque, the simple additions to the Uber app have opened up a world of opportunity. Not long ago, he didn't think he would ever be able to get a job as a driver.

Life-changing technology - With technological advances, that no longer seems to be a problem. Hoque says he knows as many as 10 other people from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community who are out on the roads driving for Uber... Read More on CBC News.

Deaf 'Faced 'Disrespect' During Traffic Stops

Deaf Canadian drivers faced with disbelief, disrespect during Winnipeg traffic stops due to communication barriers.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Two young Winnipeggers are urging Winnipeg Police Service to be more professional when dealing with people who are Deaf after both experienced officers who didn't believe them and refused to try to communicate with them at traffic stops.

Dana Zimmer and Jenna Irwin both experienced incredulous officers who didn't initially believe they were Deaf during traffic stops.

"It's happened a few times. I'm not a bad driver but it has happened a few times, and sometimes my interactions with police are very cordial – very simple, I'll get a ticket and that's it, but every once in a while it's just a little bit different," said Zimmer.

Zimmer remembers a time a few years ago when she was pulled over, and the officer started talking to her after she rolled down her window.

"Of course they'll be talking, that's natural, that's what they would normally do, and I gestured that I'm a Deaf individual and I use sign language," she said. "They just kind of gave me this look like they didn't believe me. They didn't actually think I was a Deaf person so they just kept talking to me as if I could understand them."

Zimmer said she tried again to communicate that she was Deaf, but the officer seemed frustrated.

-- Winnipeg Most Racist City In Canada: Maclean's

"I felt that I needed to prove myself as a Deaf individual, and I didn't know how I was going to do that other than saying that I was Deaf. I felt that they just didn't believe me," she said.

Zimmer said the officer motioned for her to get a pen and paper, which she didn't have handy, so he went to his car and came back with a ticket.

She said the ticket had to do with a new rule she wasn't aware of.

"When someone says they're Deaf, they need to be able to interact with them in an appropriate way," said Zimmer. "You're going to be interacting with different people in the community, and it needs to always be professional."

Irwin has experienced the same thing. She says it usually takes several gestures and requests to have officers believe she is Deaf. "I think the first and second time they try to talk, and they think I'm lying, and then I'm like, 'No, I can't understand you,'" she said.

She recently had an experience on her way home from work where she tried to use a pen and paper to communicate with an officer, but he refused. He went back to his cruiser car and she waited 45 minutes for another officer to show up who knew some sign language.

She says the officer could've communicated to her he was calling someone who knew sign, but he refused to use a pen and paper to communicate.

"I think sometimes the police officers just don't want to take the time or make the effort to communicate with us," she said. I think we all want to be treated equally. We want to feel as though we're the same as everybody else, and communication is very important. Eye contact is very important. I'm not too sure why they would assume we should be treated any differently just because we're Deaf."

Drive-Thru McDonalds Discrimination Deaf Driver

Declared lawsuit for discrimination of Deaf driver going through a drive thru at a McDonald's in Nebraska.

COLUMBUS, NE -- Here is the video with hardcoded subtitles with what is being heard for the Deaf people to understand what is being said. Hearing people are welcome to verify or correct what is being shown.

This is a video captured by Jonathan Ramos as he made a drive through at a McDonalds located in Columbus, Nebraska during January 2nd. He is Deaf and wanted to make an order.

Normally Deaf people would drive past the speakers straight to the window then hand over a written note or display the order off the screen of a smartphone. The cashier would put in the order for the next window to deliver the order.

Jonathan says that prior to the recording, he displayed his order on his phone to the window then begun the recording after this person has not returned to the window after a while. He has stated that there were problems between him and that particular McDonald since last June.

After the end of the video, a police officer appeared and issued a ticket to Jonathan and warned him that he is not to be allowed to return to McDonald or be cited for trespassing.

In a way, it is a discrimination because Jonathan is being singled out as someone who is Deaf. It does appear in this video that the employees were being extremely rude to a Deaf person by yelling at him while being aware that the driver is deaf.

I, Jonathan, am he declared sue to McDonald's Columbus, Nebraska.

If it is proven that Jonathan has been disruptive (as not shown in the video) before the recording begun, then he is at fault and is treated as someone who is being disruptive to a private property and it was within the location's rights to refuse service and have the police to escort this person away.

Deaf Driver Found Guilty In 'Zombie Walk' Crash

Deaf driver Matthew Pocci convicted of reckless driving 'Zombie Walk' crash in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, California -- Deaf motorist who drove through a group of spectators watching the "Zombie Walk" parade in San Diego, seriously injuring one woman, was convicted Wednesday of felony reckless driving.

Matthew Pocci, 47, faces up to three years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 11. Jurors deliberated a little more than a day before finding the defendant guilty.

"I'm disappointed. Matthew's extremely disappointed and hurt," defense attorney Ashby Sorensen said after the verdict. "He felt like he was a victim that day and he feels like he's a victim again for simply trying to protect his family."

Pocci testified that he was "very nervous" while waiting for pedestrians to move out of the way near Second and Island as he left the Comic-Con convention with his girlfriend and others on July 26, 2014. The defendant said he started to worry when a crowd surrounded his car and people sat on the hood.

"It's clear that they were very scared there at the end," Sorensen told reporters. The attorney said Pocci who has no prior criminal record could get probation at the time of sentencing.

Deputy District Attorney Anthony Campagna told jurors the defendant stopped for several minutes on Second Avenue, and even turned his engine off for a few moments, before honking his horn "loudly, aggressively" and driving into the group of onlookers.

Jurors saw video footage from three different angles.

Campagna said the fact that Pocci is Deaf didn't play much of a role in the crime...

Deaf Driver Hit and Run Zombie Walk

Watch the raw footage of a Deaf man arrested after running over a woman at comic-con in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO, California -- A raw footage of the vehicle running over a 64-year woman has emerged, showing the extent of injuries, including exposed flesh, muscle tissue and bone. While there were initial claims that the motorist heard threats in other online footage, the driver of the vehicle is allegedly Deaf.

The man claims he waited for the mass of people to pass, but they attacked his car, breaking his windshield and frightening his young children, he claims.

The Deaf man put his foot down and drove off to escape, but hit a nearby woman who was not participating in the walk. While police were at the head of the parade, no other police were present at any intersections.

The San Diego Zombie Walk was a non-sanctioned event of Comic Con 2014. The organizers of the Zombie Walk required all participants to obey traffic laws, including obeying traffic signals and laws around blocking vehicles which may have right of way.

The woman was seriously injured, and taken to a local hospital. Police have subsequently reported that the Deaf driver is not likely to face any charges.
