Manitoba Swimmer At Deaflympics
Manitoba's Thomas Osborn, The Kelvin High School student will represent Canada at the 2013 Deaflympics.
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Thomas Osborn lives in three worlds. Deaf, hearing and underwater. It's in the water world he is reaching heights never imagined by him or his family when his hearing, on a continuous decline since birth, completely disappeared at age 10.
The Kelvin High School student will represent Canada at the 2013 Deaflympics July 26-Aug. 4 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He's one of just six swimmers on Team Canada for the international multi-sport games, which is sanctioned by the International Committeee of Sports of the Deaf. (Deaf athletes are not eligible for the Paralympics so this is their Olympics.)
"There's a running joke with athletes who swim is that the pool is a second home," said Thomas, a member of the Manitoba Marlins Swim Club. "Our group spends over 25 hours (per week) training. Swimming has given me a lot of achievements, I'm proud of that, and I am hoping to achieve even more."
The youngest child and only son of Carolynn and DeWayne Osborn, Thomas will compete in five events at the Deaflympics the 400-, 200-, 100- and 50-metre freestyle events and the 200-m individual medley.
"It's amazing to me, for him to get to the level he is at in swimming, given what he's had to overcome," DeWayne said.
"We're very proud of all the things he's accomplished," Carolynn said. "You don't always get what you want in life. You play the hand you were dealt. So that's the hand we've been dealt, that's the hand he's been dealt, and I think he's played it remarkably well."

NESN's Jamison Coyle takes closer look at the hockey team that will be representing the United States in the Deaflympics.
The U.S. Olympic hockey team won’t get to avenge its gold-medal game loss to Canada Hockey until next February, but another group will be representing the nation against some of the best in the world much sooner than that.
The World Deaf Ice Hockey Championships begin on March 30 in Finland, and NESN’s Jamison Coyle brings you an inside look at the U.S. squad that will be competing.
The players, which include several New England natives, discuss the non-verbal tactics they employ to allow them to compete at a high level, as well as their desire to introduce the sport to hearing-impaired children around the country.

Athens, Greece was supposed to host the 2013 Summer Deaflympics but backed out because of financial problems. At the last ICSD congress, Hungary presented a good plan. But the government in Hungary offered only 50% financial support. So Deaflympics in Budapest would have been too expensive for most of our athletes. Bulgaria has also offered to host the 2013 Deaflympics, in Sofia.
Sofia has many advantages. All the required venues are already in place. Bulgaria also has a a great history of hosting Deaf sports events. And the government is supportive. Sofia, Bulgaria agreed to take over at a short notice. Visit http://sofia2013.com for more informations.

The first International Deaf Tattoo Convention of the world was held in Berlin. Twelve tattoo artists from many countries took part. More than 900 visitors came to Berlin-Weißensee.
It was great to attend the convention. We have learned a lot and made new experiences. For example, it is not "Deaf and Dumb", but "Deaf". The Moderation we have completely turned at the beginning and forgot to repeat it again. But that experience at least even more viewers, as it is correct. Es war toll, die Convention zu besuchen. Wir haben einiges gelernt und neue Erfahrungen gemacht. Zum Beispiel, das es nicht "Taubstumm", sondern "Gehörlos" heißt. Die Anmoderation haben wir ganz am Anfang gedreht und leider vergessen, es noch einmal zu wiederholen. Aber so erfahren wenigstens noch mehr Zuschauer, wie es richtig heißt. Danke auch an die Veranstalter, es war cool bei Euch.
Die 2. Deaf Tattoo Convention wird übrigens im September 2014 in Paris stattfinden.

The first International Deaf Tattoo Convention of the world was held in Berlin. Twelve tattoo artists from many countries took part. More than 900 visitors came to Berlin-Weißensee.
It was great to attend the convention. We have learned a lot and made new experiences. For example, it is not "Deaf and Dumb", but "Deaf". The Moderation we have completely turned at the beginning and forgot to repeat it again. But that experience at least even more viewers, as it is correct. Thanks also to the organizers, it was cool with you.
