MIAMI -- "Why have a sign language performance that is not accessible to anyone who would like to see it?" Christine Sun Kim wrote in an impassioned op-ed.
Christine Sun Kim is speaking out after feeling snubbed during her American Sign Language (ASL) performance of the National Anthem and “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl LIV on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

In an opinion piece published by The New York Times on Monday, the 40-year-old performer, known professionally as Ms. Kim, shared an impassioned message about the discrimination she felt directed her way on game day.
“As a child of immigrants, a grandchild of refugees, a Deaf women of color, an artist and a mother, I was proud to perform the national anthem and ‘America the Beautiful’ in American Sign Language at the opening of the Super Bowl on Sunday,” she wrote.
“On what was supposed to be a ‘bonus feed’ dedicated to my full performance on the Fox Sports website, the cameras cut away to show close-ups of the players roughly midway through each song,” she wrote.

One Twitter user called for action to be taken, writing: “Let’s take this one step further by recommending them that the ASL signer should be side by side with the other performer.”
Throughout Kim’s emotional op-ed, she expressed the hurt she felt following her performance.
“Being Deaf in America has always been political, and I needed to process some internal conflict before accepting,” she wrote. “I knew that some musical artists had refused opportunities to perform at the game last year in support of Colin Kaepernick. MOSCOW, Russia -- At Moscow’s Nedoslov Theatre, Deaf and Hard of Hearing actors put on plays in sign language. The theatre was set up to give acting opportunities to graduates of the Russian State Specialized Institute of Arts, which is the only institution in the world to prepare actors with hearing difficulties.
There, they learn to translate well-known stories or Shakespearean sonnets into gestures, speaking in the wordless but expressive language of the body. When on stage, they have special ways of communicating with each other and catching the beat of music they can’t hear but can dance to.
RTD follows the actors inside and outside the theatre. Some work mundane jobs in factories. Others have ventured into performing arts that would seem off limits, such as the hip hop dancer who ‘pops’ in street dance battles to the twins belting out pop ballads in Russian Sign Language before adoring female fans.
Their teachers, directors and coaches explain the role words play in Deaf People’s lives, and how art gives them the confidence to take on the wider world. You’ve probably heard a lot of people recently screaming and yelling about fake news. Charges fly from all points on the political spectrum: this story is mistaken - it’s Fake News; that statement is incorrect - it’s fake news.
But to my mind, these arguments miss the point. Mainstream American news is all fake because the major news outlets are so consistently biased toward the left that whether any given story they report is factual or not, their overall reportage is essentially leftist propaganda.
You can complain about the right-wing slant of Fox News all you want, but left-wing ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN have, combined, almost ten times the viewers.
The chief journalist at ABC is former Clinton operative George Stephanopoulos; the president of CBS News is David Rhodes, the brother of a former senior Obama staffer. Comcast, which owns NBC, is run by a major Democrat donor. Same for the leadership at CBS and Time Warner, which owns CNN.
Only seven percent of American journalists identify as Republican. And while a lot of news outlets forbid their reporters to donate to candidates, 96 percent of those who did donate last time out gave to Hillary Clinton.
These journalists claim that despite the fact they’re all Democrats, they can be objective. It just ain’t so. Psychologists have shown that when people associate almost exclusively with those who agree with them, they suffer from groupthink and confirmation bias and lose their ability to see events clearly.

Particularly when a statement feels “fluent” (easy to process) and familiar, we tend not to focus on the details and instead go with the gist. Unfortunately, there are many simple ways that purveyors of misinformation can tweak the presentation of their claims to increase a statement’s fluency and familiarity.
One example is the use of imagery – photographs help us to visualise statements, which means they can be processed fluently – and therefore seem truer. We can see this with medical stories: people are more likely to believe a pseudoscientific claim if it has a brain scan alongside it. .
Perhaps the most potent way of spreading misinformation is simple repetition; the more you hear an idea, the more likely you are to believe it to be true. That’s a serious problem when a small but vocal community - of climate change deniers, say - are presented as talking heads on TV and radio.
In these ways, we can begin to see how misinformation can be engineered to bypass logical thinking and critical questioning. But do intelligence and education protect us against false claims? The latest research shows it partly depends on your thinking style. Some people are “cognitive misers”, for instance: they may have a lot of brainpower that allows them to perform well in exams, but they don’t always apply it, using intuition and gut instinct rather than reflective, analytical thinking. This thinking style is commonly measured with a tool known as the “cognitive reflection test” using questions such as: “If it takes five machines five minutes to make five widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?” The correct answer is five, but many otherwise intelligent people say 100 - the more intuitive response...
