Deaf Canadians On Broadcast TV Commercials

Tim Horton's "A Meaningful Gesture" & Hershey's "Dad's Jokes" Canadian Broadcast Television Commercials in American Sign Language.

Canadian ASL community pleased to see companies in Canada beginning to embrace American Sign Language (ASL) in their commercials. Two examples are Tim Hortons and Hershey’s of the Canadian Broadcast Television.

"Sometimes it's not so easy to communicate." A welcoming Tim Hortons team member makes the difference for Mackenzie and her long-time friend Blair, who together are inspiring change to break down barriers in their community.

Hershey's Canada 44 seconds "Hersey's Dad's Jokes". There’s nothing sweeter than sharing a dad joke. Except maybe sharing a grandad joke & some Hershey's.

Sign Languages are EQUAL to Spoken Languages and this is a positive step in accepting Sign Languages as part of humanity as there are 300+ Sign Languages worldwide. UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Article.

Reality Television Needs More Deaf Talent

Even though our reality is full of individuals who are Deaf/HoH, only a handful of this population has been given an opportunity to join the cast of a reality TV show.

Huffington Post by Lydia Callis - Cycle 22 of America's Next Top Model premiered last week and one contestant, Nyle DiMarco, really captured viewers' attention. Not only is he charming and, as Tyra Banks herself said, "finneeeee. DiMarco is the very first Deaf contestant to compete on ANTM, and he quickly became a fan favorite.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive audience reaction, it's worth asking the question once again: Why don't we see more #DeafTalent representation in mainstream media?

According to a 2005 Gallaudet University survey, approximately 13 percent of U.S. citizens are Deaf/HoH -- which is roughly one out of every eight people. Even though our reality is full of individuals who are Deaf/HoH, only a handful of this population has been given an opportunity to join the cast of a reality TV show. They don't fit into the "reality" that producers are trying to create, and that is a shame for all of us.

Over the past few years, we have seen a small number of Deaf/HoH personalities get the chance to shine on reality TV. Actress Marlee Matlin made it all the way to the final episode of The Celebrity Apprentice, raising over a million dollars for charity. On hit CBS show The Amazing Race, Deaf competitor Luke Adams traveled the world conquering many challenges and ultimately came in third place. Aidan Mack Hosts Talk Show For The Deaf

The show will be one of the first of its kind designed specifically for Deaf audiences in the United States.

NEW YORK CITY -- Westchester Newsday - Croton woman hosts talk show for the Deaf - Television is a visual medium, but most talk shows just aren’t the same on mute. One Croton-on-Hudson woman is turning the traditional interview format on its head by telling her guests to talk with their hands.

Independent producer Aidan Mack has teamed up with White Plains Community Media (WPCM) to produce “The Aidan Mack Show,” in which Mack interviews guests exclusively in American Sign Language. The show will be one of the first of its kind designed specifically for Deaf audiences.

“I realized that I wanted to reach a larger audience, the hearing community, and work with them to become more comfortable interacting with Deaf people, regardless of language differences,” she said. “At the same time, I also want to dispel the misconceptions and myths about Deaf people, and show that Deaf people do live normal lives like everyone else.” ... Deaf Jam At The Nine Community Cinema

Deaf community responds about ASL short movie 'Deaf Jam' at the Nine Community Cinema.

On October 13, 2011, Nine Community Cinema in St. Louis Missouri held a public screening of "Deaf Jam," at the Missouri History Museum.

In Deaf Jam, Aneta Brodski seizes the day. She is a Deaf teen introduced to American Sign Language (ASL) Poetry, who then boldly enters the spoken word slam scene. In a wondrous twist, Aneta, an Israeli immigrant living in the Queens section of New York City, eventually meets Tahani, a hearing Palestinian slam poet.

The two women embark on a collaboration/performance duet creating a new form of slam poetry that speaks to both the hearing and the Deaf.
