California State Prison Care For Deaf Dogs

California inmates care for Deaf dogs evacuated from shelter due to fire.

LANCASTER, California -- A group of inmates at a California state prison are providing shelter, care and love for dozens of Deaf dogs that were recently forced to evacuate a nearby shelter threatened by a wildfire.

Nearly 50 dogs at the Deaf Dogs Rescue of America in Acton, California, were evacuated this past Sunday evening after the shelter's directors Lisa Tipton and her husband Mark Tipton noticed flames from the Sand Fire blowing in their direction.

"We're pretty high up on a hill and we didn't want to take a chance on floating embers 'cause all it takes is one to light this whole place up," Lisa Tipton told ABC News Today. She said she called dozens of local centers, shelters and other rescues, but only the California State Prison in Los Angeles County offered to take all the dogs, no questions asked.

The state prison in Lancaster runs a program called Paws for Life.

The state prison which is located in Lancaster, California has group of inmates involved with a program called Paws 4 Life, which matches inmates with dogs from county shelters that are at high risk for euthanization, according to Kristina Khokobashvili, a public information officer for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The inmates take in the dogs and work with professional trainers to socialize them, teach them basic obedience and ultimately help them pass the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test, Khokobashvili told ABC News today. Dogs that pass the test get a certificate showing that they know basic commands and how to interact peacefully with others thus increasing their chances of adoption.

More than 70 dogs taken in by the prison's inmates have been successfully adopted out to forever homes in the two years since Paws 4 Life's inception, Khokobashvili said.

And so when Lisa Tipton brought nearly 50 of her rescue dogs to the jail Sunday night, she said she knew "they were in good hands."

"When we came by the next morning, every single dog had a smile on their face and was enjoying themselves," Tipton said. "Even the pretty difficult dogs I thought would get snappy were thriving."

Tipton credited the inmates' genuine joy and care as the reason for why the pups adjusted so well despite such a stressful situation.

Inmate David Dougall told ABC-owned station KABC that interacting with the dogs and other people involved with program "gives me life again" and "gives me my spirit back."

Jon Grobman, another inmate, said that "Paws 4 Life restored my faith in humanity that I'm a person, that I matter."

He added, "It gave me the opportunity to care for something, love something."

Deaf Man Could Lose Leg After Hit-and-Run

Hit-and-run victim left lying in road in Wales could lose leg.

NEWPORT, Wales -- A Deaf man could lose his leg after he was left lying in the road following a hit-and-run in Newport, Wales on Friday night.

Dean Cohen, 51, is in a serious but stable condition at hospital after undergoing a 12-hour skin graft operation in a bid to save his leg.

Mr Cohen, of Oliphant Circle, Newport, had only popped to the shop on Malpas Road when he was hit by a car when crossing the road near the BP garage. The car did not stop and Mr Cohen, who has been Deaf since contracting meningitis as a baby, was left bleeding on the road.

But fortunately a pair of Good Samaritans, Jenny Peacock and her husband Matthew from Newport, were driving along Malpas Road at around 7.50pm and stopped to help.

Mrs Peacock said they had pulled over to help the man, who was conscious but bleeding with a serious injury to his leg.

“We pulled him off the road and put him against the bus stop and waited for the police and an ambulance to arrive,” she said.

“It was awful – his skin was ripped open and he was in a lot of pain.

“He was Deaf so it was difficult to communicate with him.

“He kept signing that he had been hit by a car.”

The 35-year-old said neither she nor her husband had seen what had hit him and the victim himself could not remember what had happened.

Lifeguard Rescues Deaf Dog Got Stuck In Mud

Lifeguard rescues Deaf dog that got stuck in mud at San Diego beach.

SAN DIEGO, California -- A lifeguard rescued a service dog that became stuck in mud at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach Wednesday.

Just after 5 p.m., a woman told authorities that she was walking the dog which belonged to a quadriplegic veteran when the animal somehow broke free and ran away. The dog, a German wirehaired pointer named Rita, then became stuck in a muddy area of the beach.

"It was up to her neck and it was terrifying," said Joey Riley, the veteran's caregiver. She was signing to the 12-year-old dog, which is Deaf.

"As I stepped, my feet would sink down into the mud so I backed up so that I didn't get into the same situation as she did," said Riley.

It was a situation she was well aware had killed a man a year earlier, who became trapped when the tide washed in. Lucky for Rita, help arrived in the form of a lone rescuer, San Diego Lifeguard Chuck Davey.

"I was able to get the front paws onto the board and then I had to dig down into the organic matter and pull the dog up onto the board," he said. Using a surfboard, he was able to free the dog from the thick mud. Riley made her way to the animal and was able to call it over. No injuries were reported.
