‘Piglet’ The Deaf Blind Pink Puppy

Deaf, Blind and pink puppy named ‘Piglet’ inspires with his resilience.

WESTPORT, Connecticut -- Piglet, the Deaf Blind pink puppy was rescued from a hoarding situation in Georgia, USA along with his mother and 3 litter mates. He is a Dachshund and Chihuahua mix, and the product of two dapple colored parents. Dapple to dapple breeding results in a 25% chance of each puppy being “double dapple”. This double dapple color pattern is linked to congenital ear and eye defects that may result in partially or completely Deaf/Blind puppies.

NBC News: Veterinarian Melissa Shapiro rescued Piglet when he was just one pound and never gave up on him. Piglet became a viral sensation as she documented the tiny dog’s milestones on social media. A third-grade teacher saw the posts and felt so inspired that she invited Piglet to show her students the importance of perseverance.

Deaf Man Finds Friendship In Deaf Dog

Deaf Floridian man adopts dog with disability, teaches pup american sign language getting the media's attention.

LAKE CITY, FL -- A Deaf man found a perfect companion when he adopted his Deaf dog. Nick Abbott first saw Emerson, a cute Black Labrador, on his Facebook News Feed when the North Florida Rescue of Maine posted the dog's picture.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Emerson was looking for a loving home. "I was drawn to him right away because we have similarities. I felt like because I know what it's like to be Deaf, I could understand him,"

Emerson was a part of a litter and all of his siblings had already been adopted.

“He is left wondering why no one wants to give him a forever home,” NFR posted alongside his picture prior to his adoption. “He wants everyone to know that even though he may be deaf, he is still an amazing little pup with SOO much love to give!” Abbott said he initially wasn’t sure if he could handle the responsibility of another dog as he already had a 7-year-old yellow Lab, but he couldn’t get Emerson out of his mind.

“I decided I should at least go meet him and see,” Abbott said. “I walked in and he came right to me and sat on my foot. It was like he already knew me…. That’s the moment that I knew.” Their bond thus far has been “awesome,” Abbott explained. Wherever he is, Emerson is nearby.

Now, Abbott is actively training Emerson. The pup is already learning commands in sign language and has been fast at picking it up.

“I didn’t know what it would be like to have a Deaf dog. I’ve never been around a Deaf dog before,” Abbott said. “I think we have been learning together as we go.”

Deaf Couple Pleads For Return of Dog Stolen

Deaf couple pleads for return of dog stolen from in front of store.

INKSTER, Michigan -- A metro Detroit Uber driver is hoping you can help reunite her with her dog.

Megan Nairne says her dog, Bruiser, was taken while on a walk with her significant other. They had stopped at Harrison Liquor Store in Inkster, while she was working on Opening Day at Comerica Park.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The dognapping was captured on video, which Nairne posted to Facebook.

Nairne says she had just dropped a rider off near Comerica when she got word that Bruiser had been taken.

Narine says she and her significant other, James, adopted the 9-year-old Bruiser after James' mother, Linda, passed away in April 2015. Bruiser was originally Linda's dog.

Nairne says Bruiser is very attached to James and will get depressed if he is not around.

James had stopped at the store during their walk to get Bruiser a snack, and left him outside because the store does not allow pets inside.

Nairne says they have filed a police report, but do not feel their case has been given the appropriate priority.

She says she just wants to get Bruiser home.

California State Prison Care For Deaf Dogs

California inmates care for Deaf dogs evacuated from shelter due to fire.

LANCASTER, California -- A group of inmates at a California state prison are providing shelter, care and love for dozens of Deaf dogs that were recently forced to evacuate a nearby shelter threatened by a wildfire.

Nearly 50 dogs at the Deaf Dogs Rescue of America in Acton, California, were evacuated this past Sunday evening after the shelter's directors Lisa Tipton and her husband Mark Tipton noticed flames from the Sand Fire blowing in their direction.

"We're pretty high up on a hill and we didn't want to take a chance on floating embers 'cause all it takes is one to light this whole place up," Lisa Tipton told ABC News Today. She said she called dozens of local centers, shelters and other rescues, but only the California State Prison in Los Angeles County offered to take all the dogs, no questions asked.

The state prison in Lancaster runs a program called Paws for Life.

The state prison which is located in Lancaster, California has group of inmates involved with a program called Paws 4 Life, which matches inmates with dogs from county shelters that are at high risk for euthanization, according to Kristina Khokobashvili, a public information officer for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The inmates take in the dogs and work with professional trainers to socialize them, teach them basic obedience and ultimately help them pass the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test, Khokobashvili told ABC News today. Dogs that pass the test get a certificate showing that they know basic commands and how to interact peacefully with others thus increasing their chances of adoption.

More than 70 dogs taken in by the prison's inmates have been successfully adopted out to forever homes in the two years since Paws 4 Life's inception, Khokobashvili said.

And so when Lisa Tipton brought nearly 50 of her rescue dogs to the jail Sunday night, she said she knew "they were in good hands."

"When we came by the next morning, every single dog had a smile on their face and was enjoying themselves," Tipton said. "Even the pretty difficult dogs I thought would get snappy were thriving."

Tipton credited the inmates' genuine joy and care as the reason for why the pups adjusted so well despite such a stressful situation.

Inmate David Dougall told ABC-owned station KABC that interacting with the dogs and other people involved with program "gives me life again" and "gives me my spirit back."

Jon Grobman, another inmate, said that "Paws 4 Life restored my faith in humanity that I'm a person, that I matter."

He added, "It gave me the opportunity to care for something, love something."

Lifeguard Rescues Deaf Dog Got Stuck In Mud

Lifeguard rescues Deaf dog that got stuck in mud at San Diego beach.

SAN DIEGO, California -- A lifeguard rescued a service dog that became stuck in mud at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach Wednesday.

Just after 5 p.m., a woman told authorities that she was walking the dog which belonged to a quadriplegic veteran when the animal somehow broke free and ran away. The dog, a German wirehaired pointer named Rita, then became stuck in a muddy area of the beach.

"It was up to her neck and it was terrifying," said Joey Riley, the veteran's caregiver. She was signing to the 12-year-old dog, which is Deaf.

"As I stepped, my feet would sink down into the mud so I backed up so that I didn't get into the same situation as she did," said Riley.

It was a situation she was well aware had killed a man a year earlier, who became trapped when the tide washed in. Lucky for Rita, help arrived in the form of a lone rescuer, San Diego Lifeguard Chuck Davey.

"I was able to get the front paws onto the board and then I had to dig down into the organic matter and pull the dog up onto the board," he said. Using a surfboard, he was able to free the dog from the thick mud. Riley made her way to the animal and was able to call it over. No injuries were reported.

Deaf Dog Gets Adopted By Deaf Man

The adorable Deaf dog gets adopted by Deaf man after 9NEWS report.

DIVIDE, Colorado -- A Deaf dog who was having a difficult time being adopted from the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter has a new forever home. A Deaf man decided to adopt 'Connor' after seeing the 9NEWS report last week.

The one-year-old pup was born with something called 'Cerebellar Hypoplasia', which means his cerebellum never matured.

Employees at the shelter also noticed Connor wasn't responding well to commands. Eventually, one of the shelter's technicians discovered the problem: Connor was Deaf. Because of his disability, the tech taught Connor how to read American Sign Language.

Previous Story: Deaf dog learns sign language. According to the shelter, Connor picked up on it pretty quickly and understood several commands. Unfortunately, a lot of people looking to adopt pets turned their heads away from Connor and figured it would take too much effort to care for him. So Connor lived at the shelter, until this week. "We are so excited that he was able to find his forever home," said Nancy Adams, with the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter.

Adams said the man who adopted Connor saw the 9NEWS story airing on sister-station KOAA-5 in Colorado Springs. When he saw the story, he was touched and decided to adopt Connor. Adams said the process was a tad bit difficult since the man didn't have an interpreter with him. Instead, he communicated with the shelter by writing down his thoughts on a piece of paper."He's a person who will truly appreciate Connor's disabilities. And the nice thing is it made people aware with special needs are very adoptable and very good pets," Adams said.

Deaf Dog Shot Dead In Deaf Woman's Yard

Deaf Alabama woman distraught after deaf dog shot dead in her yard. Animal cruelty charges are likely for whoever shot and killed a dog.

SATSUMA, AL -- Tabitha Venable found her 2-year-old dog Si Lethargic inside her Satsuma, Alabama yard Tuesday evening. She had no idea he had been shot until she took him to the vet, where the pooch died in emergency surgery. Now she is hunting for the heartless brute who would randomly kill her dog.

A heartless goon gunned down a deaf dog in broad daylight, leaving his owner, a Deaf Alabama woman, heartbroken and mystified. Tabitha Venable returned to her Satsuma yard Tuesday evening to find Si, a 2-year-old Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Cur, acting lethargically, weaving and walking about in a strange way, she told WKRG-TV.

“I asked him, ‘are you OK?’ she told the station. But nothing helped the mortally wounded dog. She rushed the pup to a vet where she learned he had been shot and was rushed into emergency surgery.

He died as doctors desperately tried to save the pooch. Venable, who lost her own hearing as a 4-year-old, has no idea who would shoot her dog. Police say the pup was plugged with a .22-caliber slug, and whoever is responsible would likely face a felony animal cruelty charge.

"I don't feel safe,” said Venable as she spoke and signed her responses to the TV station. “If somebody shot my dog, it could happen to me. I can't hear a gunshot."

Dog and owner had an inseparable bond when Venable visited little Si two years ago, when he was a squirmy 8-week-old pup at an animal shelter...

Deaf Puppy Dumped On Busy Ohio Highway

Hundreds calling with adoption questions on Deaf puppy dumped near Portage County highway.

AKRON, Ohio -- An estimated 800 people have called One of a Kind Pets Rescue to inquire about a Deaf puppy that was left inside a cardboard box near a highway last month. "Everybody wants to meet this puppy that has gotten so much exposure," said Georjette Thomas from One of a Kind.

The puppy, a 9-week-old Jack Russell terrier mix named Cara, was found in a shoebox on the side of Tallmadge Road in Brimfield Township on Jan 12.

She had a hairline fracture in a front leg and open wounds. Animal experts determined the puppy was Deaf after she didn't respond to commands.

"To think that this puppy was disposable by somebody or to somebody is unfathomable to us," Thomas said. Since news spread that Cara is available for adoption, One of a Kind has been flooded with calls and visitors.

Many people have already filled out adoption papers and dozens more are expected... Read The Full Story.

Service dog saves Deaf man from fire in Pennsylvania.

SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania -- A fire with large flames and black smoke destroyed Valley Billiards in Salem Township, Westmoreland County.

Burley Hartin, the owner, said his Deaf son was inside at the time and escaped unharmed after being alerted by a service dog.

“The dog alerted him. The black Lab is his buddy and he doesn't leave his side. When this fire started, the dog just carried on something terrible, alerted him and he got out,” said Hartin.

Pit Bull Kills Deaf Lady's Chihuahua

Caught on tape, A Pit-bull kills Deaf lady's Chihuahua.

EL SERENO-LOS ANGELES, California -- A Deaf woman and her dog were attacked by a neighbour's American Pit-Bull Terrier in El Sereno Saturday morning. The woman's dog, a Chihuahua named Muffy, had to be put down.

From what it looks like on the CCTV, it was all the Deaf ladys fault right Pit Bull supporters??! "They've attacked the mail man, they've attacked dog, they've attacked other people that are walking their dogs, as well as people that were just walking," said Rene Uribe, a neighbour.

This is why you should never get a pit bull as a pet. Pit bulls are the #1 Killer of our beloved pets of all dog breeds combined.

Did you know that 38,000 domestic animals are killed every year by pit bulls (for comparison: 10,000 people are killed by drunk drivers every year)? Our neighborhoods have turned into killing fields for pit bulls. Our pets are getting slaughtered in our neighborhoods. Not only that but many people end up getting hurt trying to save their pet. These devastated people who lose their pets are suffering from PTSD. https://facebook.com/pitbullskilledmypet.

A Propensity to Attack Other Dogs Means a Dog Is Dangerous to People. Approximately one-third of Mr. Phillips' cases started out as a dog attacking another dog, and then turned into a dog attacking a person.
https://dogbitelaw.com/vicious-dogs/a-propensity-to-attack.

The laws and procedures of animal control across the country need to be revamped in light of the pit bull fad that's taken over. These pit bull owners need to stop terrorizing the public with their dogs. These pit bull owners should be charged with assault by a deadly weapon. Anyone who allows their pit bull to attack or kill another animal is exactly the same capacity as a dog fighter.

Correct there are nice pit bulls. The problem is that you can't tell them apart from the pit bulls that decide to kill. Would you deliberately choose a crib, car, or helmet with the highest record of fatalities and the worst safety rating? Pit-bull type dogs are responsible for 95% of severe attacks (level 4-6 dog bites) on people, pets and livestock in breed neutral zones. Please follow for one month. You will be shocked at all the people and pets that are severely maimed or killed by pit bulls.
https://nationalpitbullvictimawareness.org.

Pit bulls do not lock their jaw but with their 'gameness' trait they do not let go until their victims are dead. This trait is for success in the fight pits.

Two words to prove pit bull type dogs are inherently dangerous: "BREAK STICK".

Does this sound like a normal and safe dog breed to have live in our neighborhoods? Pit Bull Rescue Central recommends ALL pit bull owners to have a "break stick", a wedge-shaped piece of wood used to pry open a pit bull’s jaw during an attack. "Since pit bulls have a strong fighting background, we recommend that pet owners also have a breaking stick as a precaution.
https://blog.dogsbite.org/2008/09/break-sticks-tool-used-to-pry-open-pit.

This person demonstrates how to use a break stick on a pit-bull:
https://youtube.com/watch.

Pit bulls do not lock their jaws, but due to their "gameness" trait, they rather die than to let go. This trait ensures success in the dog-fighting ring. They have a wide jaw structure and are able to breath/pant while hanging onto their victim's flesh; to ultimately wear down their opponents. The panting allows pit bulls not to overheat so their chances of "winning" during the fight increases. These pit bull breed traits supersede any other dog breeds' bite pressure.

According to Pit Bull Rescue Central, "It is a FACT that our pit bulls, AmStaffs and pit mixes come with a built-in fighting heritage. It doesn’t matter where we get them from, whether it be the pound, a stray we pick up, or a puppy we buy from a breeder. The majority of pit bulls will, at some point in their lives, exhibit some degree of dog-on-dog aggression. Yet, chances are that a "normal" pit bull will not share his affection with other animals. We cannot predict when or where it will happen and we can’t love, train or socialize it out of the dog. Pit bulls may not start fights, but they will finish them."

Tia Torres, who has a T.V. show on Animal Planet called "Pit Bulls & Parolees", wrote this for Rescue Train. "It's a mistake to think the fighting gene can be easily trained or loved out of a pit-bull."
https://therescuetrain.org/resources/pitbull-education.

Please read 'HOW TO PREVENT YOUR PIT BULL FROM FIGHTING'. Most shelters and rescues staff/volunteers admit pit bulls are bred for fighting. It's best to own only one pit bull. NEVER bring an adult pit bull to an off-leash dog park, we are setting people and dogs up for failure.
https://bullymax.com/preventing-pitbull-fights.

Pit bulls killed 38,000 other animals last year including 13,000 dogs, 5,000 cats, and 20,000 farm animals.
