Gallaudet: White House Experience 'Unforgettable'

WASHINGTON DC -- The Whig: A Deaf Kingston man studying in Washington, D.C., signed “I love you” to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau during their visit to The White House Thursday morning.

Wyatt Scott, who is in his fourth year at Gallaudet University in Washington, was invited to see the prime minister’s arrival, along with several other Canadian students from the school that specializes in educating Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

“The experience at the White House was great!” Scott wrote in an email.

He said there were more than 3,000 people there to see the Trudeaus, including the 17 Deaf Canadian students from Gallaudet who were given VIP seats right next to the stage from which the two leaders addressed the crowd.

Scott got to see President Barack Obama and the first lady walk out of the White House to wait for the Trudeaus’ motorcade to arrive. Seeing the Trudeaus together with the Obamas was an exciting moment, he added.

“It was very cool to see them right there in front of us. We cheered, signed ‘I love you,’ waved the Canadian flags, and hoped to catch their attention. I think they did notice us. I’ve never dreamed to be that very close to the two most important leaders in the same location.”

Scott watched the military guard perform a salute to the two leaders and, with the help of an interpreter, laughed at Obama’s jokes about hockey.

“We took a lot of pictures everywhere to remember the unforgettable event. After the speeches, we did hope for both leaders to walk by us, shake hands, and take selfies with them, but that didn’t happen. I’m fine with it because I’m more than satisfied to see them up close instead of watching on the TV.”

After the Trudeaus’ departure, Scott and his friends left for lunch and a chance to discuss what they had seen.

“It was definitely a once-in-a-life opportunity, and that will probably not happen again in my lifetime. The overall experience at the White House was fantastic and unforgettable because that was my first and (likely) last time to visit the White House before graduating this May.”

SNL Spoofs Fake Sign Language Interpreter Skit

WATCH: 'Saturday Night Live' fake interpreter from Nelson Mandela funeral strikes again.

NEW YORK CITY -- 'Saturday Night Live' kicked off its John Goodman-helmed episode with President Obama (Jay Pharoah) lamenting the "series of unfortunate events" that happened at the memorial for Nelson Mandela.

First of all, there was that selfie with the Danish Prime Minister, then the handshake with Raul Castro ("He told me he was Edward James Olmos,") and finally, the sign language interpreter who didn't appear to know sign language. Naturally, after mentioning him, Thamsanqa Jantjie (Kenan Thompson) appeared behind the POTUS and proceeded to "loosely" interpret the rest of the speech.

Most importantly, 'SNL' reminded us that lost amongst all the hoopla were the feelings of poor Angela Merkel, he never got her selfie with Obama, even after he spied on her.

An SNL interpreter skit is making people laugh all across the United States of America this week, as SNL decided to make a parody of the #fakeinterpreter who made off-key signs at the memorial service following the recent death of Nelson Mandela. The video is swiftly making the rounds online over the debacle, and viewers are saying that it’s crazy to think that this spoof really isn’t that far off the mark of what really happened with the schizophrenic sign language “expert” last week.

The SNL interpreter skit comes at a time that many citizens across the globe are still mourning the tragic loss of Nelson Mandela, but both the Deaf and others were recently shocked at the real-life debacle of what happened with the sign language interpreter at the peaceful man’s memorial service. Thamsanga Jantjie says he has gone to School Specialized for the Deaf and is skilled in the use of sign language, but the South African actually used bogus signs throughout the service.

Now, Jantjie is adding that he suffers from schizophrenia, and during the speech, the dubbed fake interpreter was having insane visions of flying angels coming into the stadium, preventing him from signing properly. Of course, SNL decided to make a skit of this interpreter’s debacle, and the result is very funny...

Deaf Community Met President Obama

Deaf man met president Barack Obama and saying "Thank you" in American Sign Language.

WASHINGTON, DC -- A Deaf msn stood just a few feet away from Barack Obama. The president, busy shaking hands, looked right at them. “It was like he was waiting for us to say something,” Stephon said later.

The 26-year-old Prince George’s Community College student took his cue and spoke to President Obama in his first language: American Sign Language. “I am proud of you,” Stephon signed. The president, almost involuntary, instinctively, immediately signed back. “Thank you,” Obama replied. This is one of those moments that humanize the office of the presidency.

Stephon born DEAF, and justifiably proud, Stephon told us later he had no idea he’d be seated in the VIP section so close to the president and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley at the March 15th event.
