Practitioners of a particular religion probably spend most of their time with each other, so the way they treat each other is an indication of how they treat others. When a leader (governing body members) can tell his followers what he can do without being questioned, he tends to lack empathy due to lack of feedback. The followers also lack empathy since they mirror the behaviour of their leader.

Deaf Couple Face Eviction Over Son's Debt

The proposed eviction of an elderly couple who are Deaf and can’t read or write because they unwittingly acted as guarantors for their son’s bank loan has sparked public outcry in Spain.

MADRID, Spain -- Bankia made the decision on Monday to cancel the eviction of an elderly couple who are disabled and illiterate after bowing to public pressure and a change.org petition that collected 220,000 signatures in just 48 hours.

Last month Maria del Carmen Lebron, 81, and Antonio Pleguezuelos, 76 who have lived in their home in the Madrid suburb of Pinto since 1970 were given an eviction notice as Bankia called in an outstanding debt owed by their son Gregorio.

It was only then that they learnt that in 2005 they had signed documents acting as guarantors for a €219,500 mortgage for their son, even though they hadn’t understood what they were signing.

In fact the mortgage agreement states that the contract was read out to the couple by a notary and that they had fully understood and agreed the terms. Their lawyers now argue that the agreement was invalid as both are completely Deaf - Antonio lost his hearing when he was four years old after falling ill with meningitis and Maria del Carmen was Deaf since birth.

When their son lost his job in the crisis and fell behind on mortgage payments the bank called in the debt and demanded they leave their house by January 30th 2017.

Their eldest son Benjamin made the case public starting a petition on change.org which garnered more than 200,000 signatures in just 48 hours and made headlines across Spain.

On Monday, Bankia announced that it had stopped the eviction order and would cancel the debt “given the particular vulnerability observed in this case”.

The case highlights the still ongoing plight of indebted homeowners suffering years of unemployment as a result of Spain’s economic crisis.

During the peak of the eviction crisis as banks called in loans, hundreds of families were evicted each day. In 2013, some 50,000 families were turfed out of their homes.

IDHHC Poor Service To Deaf Illinoisans: Critics

Agency accused of poor leadership, service to Deaf Illinoisans.

SPRINGFIELD, IL -- The State Journal-Register: A tiny state agency says in a brochure that it exists to “decrease barriers” for Illinoisans with hearing loss.

But according to critics, the Springfield-based Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission is squandering its $800,000 to $850,000 in annual state funding through inept leadership and weak oversight.

“They are incompetent,” said Corey Axelrod, president of the Illinois Association of the Deaf, referring to commission director John Miller and assistant director Janet Lambert.

“They really shouldn’t be leading this particular agency,” said Axelrod, speaking on behalf of the 500-member, all-volunteer association.

Added Alan Thomas, Deaf services coordinator at the PACE Center for Independent Living in Urbana: “I don’t think they have enough expertise to run that agency. When I contact them for information, they don’t have much to share.”

Money that is going unused by the commission should be devoted to hiring more staff, Axelrod said, while Miller and Lambert should be replaced.

"They are underqualified and overpaid," Axelrod said.

Critics of the commission launched an online petition this summer that has been signed by 235 people and calls for the commission to “commit itself to make actual systematic changes and ensure that the state of Illinois, non-Deaf individuals and service providers, not only hear, but also listen to the needs of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community the IDHHC is supposed to serve.”

Axelrod, 30, an Arlington Heights resident who works for a nonprofit group in the Chicago area, said he and others leveling criticism are "baffled" by the responses they have received from Miller and others at the commission the past several years... Read More at The State Journal-Register.

MELBOURNE -- The Age: The email came from a woman in Adelaide. "You moron, are you stupid? Are you paying for the interpreter or is the taxpayer paying for it? There are bigger issues in the world then a f--king interpreter".

Ramas McRae smiles, and shrugs his broad shoulders.

The Deaf community advocate has become the target of abusive messages after his public push to get the Australian Football League to provide Auslan (Australian sign language) translation at the Grand Final.

But when you're born with a disability, you learn to grow a thick skin, the Hawthorn fan says, signing to me through an interpreter, Mark Quinn.

A Hawthorn fan, McRae asked the league to provide a translator for the entertainment and ceremonies during the Grand Final this year, including the anthem. But the AFL refused, saying the closed caption system on TV was appropriate.

So McRae has lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, claiming the AFL have discriminated against him on the basis of his disability, and also launched a change.org petition. He is supported by a range of groups, including Deaf Australia and Deaf Victoria.

With the AFL promoting awareness of the women's league, and LGBTI recognition through its Pride game, McRae wants it to extend this inclusion to Deaf people (at the cost of a few hundred dollars).

"The Deaf community, and Deaf football fans, have the right to be a visible part of this huge sporting event," McRae says. "As citizens, we also have the right to see the national anthem in our preferred language."

Closed captions often have a 30-second to one-minute time lag on them, and require a screen, which means people who are at the game will not be able to see them, he says. Auslan is a language with its own syntax and grammar, which is quite different to English.

Internationally, particularly in the United States, sign language is commonly used at sporting events, including at the grand finals of the National Football League and National Basketball Association.

"For Deaf Americans it's very normal. People are often quite surprised internationally that Australia lags so far behind."

Some sporting codes are keen on the idea. Melbourne Racing Club's head of racing, Jake Norton, contacted McRae after he heard about his request. The club would like to introduce interpreters at major race meets, he said.

The AFL believes an on-ground interpreter would not be seen by the crowd, because of the distance from the seating to the arena, a spokesman said in a statement.

And because the broadcast coverage moves around the crowd and arena – and rarely focuses on the announcer – an interpreter would not often be seen, he said.

Having an interpreter shown in a separate box in one corner of the television screen would still be difficult to see clearly, and would impact on the wider broadcast, he said.

The words of the anthem could be displayed on LED signage during the pre-game period, and the AFL is discussing this possibility, he said.

Save Ontario Schools, Deaf Community Says

LONDON, ON -- The province’s Deaf community and their supporters are putting pressure on Ontario’s government this week, calling on them to keep schools for the Deaf and special needs students open.

Executive director of the Ontario Association of the Deaf, as well as parents of kids who attend so-called demonstration schools - they’re funded outside the traditional school board model will be with London Fanshawe MPP Teresa Armstrong Thursday, in whose riding Robarts and Amethyst schools are located.

The group will make a presentation on the future of five such schools, including the two in London.

“The vague, uncertain messages from the Ministry (of Education) has affected our community-wide morale, self-esteem,” said David Wiesblatt, president of the London Club of the Deaf, which is organizing one of three provincial community forums on Friday.

Armstrong could not be reached by press time.

Robarts teaches Deaf students in their first language, American Sign Language, giving students a sense of community and culture, proponents say.

Amethyst is for students of average to high intelligence who have severe learning disabilities.

Students live at both schools, operated separately on Highbury Avenue, and go home on weekends.

The 2012 Drummond Report, which contained suggestions for the province on how to save money, recommended closing demonstration schools and integrating students in mainstream schools.

“Robarts has wonderful staff, administrators and facilities to support and serve our Deaf kids to thrive. We have many, many successful stories from the students and transfers from mainstream schools,” said Wiesblatt.

Many fear community consultations are a sham and the province has already made up its mind about the closings.

The total budget for the nine provincial and demonstration schools is $87.6 million. This includes salaries, operating costs and capital expenditures. Only five of the schools are under review.

Deaf Schools Under Reviews:

Robarts School for the Deaf (London): 25 senior students and 40 elementary-aged pupils.

Amethyst Demonstration School (London): Maximum 42 students a year.

Others: Trillium Demonstration School (Milton), Sagonaska Demonstration School (Belleville), Centre Jules-Leger (Ottawa.)

Canadian 'Deaf Superintendent Now' Petition

Deaf News: Canadian protesters say Deaf students’ new superintendent who can hear must go - but not everyone agrees.

TORONTO -- A loud campaign advocating for a Deaf Superintendent circulated online and around the world, then didn’t get what it was fighting for.

The Provincial Schools Branch (PSB), which oversees the provinces four schools for the Deaf, announced last week it hired a hearing superintendent, Jeanne Leonard.

The announcement also said the branch hired Heather Gibson, who is Deaf, in a new position called “assistant to the superintendents.” Though that brings a Deaf person to an administrative level previously dominated by hearing people, some in the Deaf community say that’s not what they were asking for.

“It totally doesn’t make sense - there are qualified Deaf candidates,” Rose Etheridge, said through an interpreter at a protest Monday in front of the Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. “They’re trying to pacify us,” added Etheridge, whose Oct. 22 video calling for a Deaf Superintendent has hit 20,000 views. Stop Moving Deaf To Mainstream Schools

Petition: Stop moving Deaf children to Mainstream Schools, Keep and Open more Deaf Schools.

More Deaf Schools has been closed in last few decades which means more parents of Deaf children have very fewer choices. One or two limited choices available which forced the parents to make decision to move their children to Mainstream schools.

It costs the Government MORE money to spend money on BSL CSWs or BSL interpreters and all extra unnecessary support for few Deaf pupils at Mainstream Schools.

It was said that many Deaf children losing their Deaf identities including found this is a big barrier to access to Deaf Culture and to Sign Language.

Many Deaf people become Qualified Teachers NOW! More Deaf people are qualified in specialist subjects and they can teach at Deaf Schools.

"The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) promotes and safeguards the right of all Deaf people to quality education, starting at birth and throughout life. As for all learners, Deaf children have the same right to education and full access to quality education."

WFD then says "Full inclusion for a Deaf learner means a totally supportive, signing and student-centred environment. This permits the learner to develop to his/her full educational, social and emotional potential. This is stated also in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".

"Otherwise, inclusion as a simple placement in a regular school without meaningful interaction with classmates and professionals at all times is tantamount to exclusion of the Deaf learner from education and society. In such environments, the Deaf child is physically present but may be mentally and socially absent."

Deaf children should not experience mentally and socially absent, as they should easily access to high quality of education via Deaf teachers or Teachers who hold high level of sign language communication.

We are asking the Government to change the current policy of mainstream schools and adopt a language policy to ensure to protect Deaf Schools, and find ways to reopen more Deaf Schools.

Presently there are several handshapes that we use to articulate our feelings by text, including: “peace”, “thumbs up”, “thumbs down”, “face palm”, “fist bump," "a-okay" and several others.

“I Love You” is one sign expressed in American Sign Language (ASL) and it has moved into the mainstream with wider universal understanding and acceptance among those who sign and those who do not (yet). Up until now, the best folks can do to recreate it by symbol is _\,,/ and that really doesn't do the meaning justice.

The "I Love You" sign is an informal way of expressing a number of positive emotions, ranging from general esteem and admiration to love for the recipient of the sign. Of course, the “I Love You” handshape emoji would be available in all skin tones.

MANILA, Philippines -- Today, 16 new HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) cases are recorded in the Philippines. It is likely to continue increasing in the coming years.

Most of the new HIV cases are among men who have sex with men and transgenders, and due to inaquate HIV services in the country, we fear that more and more Filipino gays, bisexuals, other men who have sex with men, and transgender people will be vulnerable to the epidemic.

I am Bibo Lee Perey, and I am writing this petition on behalf of the Pinoy Deaf Rainbow, an organization of Deaf LGBTs in the Philippines.

The current HIV epidemic heightens the vulnerabilities of Deaf gays, bisexuals, other men who have sex with men, and trans people. Our exclusion has many layers: we are stigmatized and discrimination because of our disability, our sexual orientation, and our gender identity.

Some of our friends have already been infected by HIV, and yet there are no deaf-friendly HIV services in the country that could help us protect ourselves from HIV and access testing and treatment, care, and support.

We have already sent a request for deaf-friendly HIV services to the Department of Health on June 2013, but we did not receive any response.

Through this online petition, we hope to reiterate our appeal for deaf-friendly HIV services. We hope to remind Secretary Ona of Article 25 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which encourages Member-States to:

• Provide persons with disabilities with the same range, quality and standard of free or affordable health care and programs as provided to other persons, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health and population-based public health programs;

• Provide those health services needed by persons with disabilities specifically because of their disabilities, including early identification and intervention as appropriate, and services designed to minimize and prevent further disabilities, including among children and older persons;

• Require health professionals to provide care of the same quality to persons with disabilities as to others, including on the basis of free and informed consent by, inter alia, raising awareness of the human rights, dignity, autonomy and needs of persons with disabilities through training and the promulgation of ethical standards for public and private health care

We need to have access to HIV testing. One concrete step that DOH can immediately do is to include in the guidelines for HIV testing the possibility of deaf client signing a waiver form to allow a Sign Language interpreter, with the client indicating informed consent for the presence of the interpreter during voluntary HIV testing and counselling and the interpreter bound to maintain confidentiality.

'Sign Language is Strength' Demonstration

10,000 Deaf people protested in Berlin for equal rights and participation in the German society at by the Federal Parliament.

BERLIN, Germany -- 14 June 2013 about 10,000 mostly Deaf people from all over the West for your rights and accessibility demonstrated by sign language. The demonstration route ran from the Reichstag to the vicinity of Checkpoint Charlie on Friedrichstrasse. Mel Riot reported.

25 years ago, on 17 June 1988 the European Parliament decided that the respective national sign language should be recognized as full-fledged language in all Member States of the European Community.

Due to the prolonged struggle of the Deaf community and the support of many politicians the respective sign language is now recognized in most countries of the European Union and the Deaf fellow citizens have the right of access to information in their native language. However, there are still countries where the national sign language is not recognized, and in Germany there are still many situations in which Deaf people, despite the recognition of sign language, equal access to institutions of public life is denied.

With the demonstration of "action sign language" grab those affected exactly this topic, and want to show that the German sign language even though she is 11 years officially recognized in Germany, is not yet considered in all aspects as a matter of course. Deaf people encounter still many barriers and there are big differences in quality of the services for hearing-impaired people.

Nor is self-evident in the pre-school education, access to sign language and a bilingual early intervention.

An example of this is the education in which the foundation for the further development opportunities and hard of hearing children is fixed. Arizona probes accusation of conflicts at Arizona Schools for the Deaf & Blind, Superintendent, board president focus of protests, complaints.

TUCSON, AZ -- Two state agencies are investigating the superintendent and board president of the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind for potential conflicts of interest and excessive travel expenses.

Superintendent Robert Hill and ASDB Board President Bernhardt Jones also have been the focus of multiple protests at school's two main campuses in Tucson and Phoenix over the last two weeks. Students, parents and former employees have called for the two to resign because of a lack of leadership and poor communication with the staff. Among the concerns:

• Possible conflicts of interest: Hill and Jones have a private business relationship outside their ASDB positions. Jones is the director of TASK12, which administers the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment for a $310 testing fee. Hill is listed as a TASK12 local test administrator at classroominterpreting.org. Neither Hill nor Jones disclosed their roles with TASK12 to ASDB, its board of directors or the state... Outrage swirling at the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind. One administrator on leave. Another fired. And now students say even their animals are gone.

Arizona Schools for the Deaf & Blind Board of Directors: Acknowledge the vote of "No Confidence" in Superintendent Robert Hill:

Five years ago, parents, staff, and community members gathered to ensure that Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind's campuses were truly accessible to American Sign Language (ASL) for the students and staff as well as fostering positive changes in the curriculum in order to advance deaf education.

Today, we find that our students' education is now at risk because of haphazard administrative decisions and questionable conduct by Superintendent Robert Hill, including several allegations of discriminatory conduct in regards to staff (female/sexual) and disability (Deaf).

Nearly 50 ASDB staff members have already personally signed the following statement:

We, the members of the ASDB community including staff, parents, alumni, and friends, sign this petition as a Vote of No Confidence in Robert Hill's continued service as Superintendent of ASDB.

As State Director of Special Education and the person who gathered nominations for the Application Selection/Screening Committee members, it is important that I let you know there are two problems.

There is only one Deaf person on this committee. This is unacceptable. Deaf people are heavily invested in USDB and should have a majority position on any committee discussing it.

One of the committee members, Karl White, is seen, by the Deaf Community and also by professionals who study and teach about Language Acquisition, Brain Development, and Deaf Culture, as someone who is very lacking in being able to help decide interview questions for the upcoming USDB Supt candidates.

His past interactions have been disrespectful towards Deaf professionals and those knowledgeable about Deaf Education. This has been evident at EHDI conferences and other NCHAM lectures. He has a known reputation for disregarding Deaf input. He has been oppressive and patronizing to Deaf adults and the Deaf community. I feel he is someone who does not understand what is critical to understand about Deaf Education and the skills/talents needed in the next USDB Supt. I would petition you and those who have made this appointment to please remove Karl White from this committee. He is unacceptable.

ASL Community Outraged Over 'Super Smutty Sign Language'

The book 'Super Smutty Sign Language' by Kristin Henson has angered and caused protest amongst many members of the American Sign Language community.

This vblog discussing to support of the Petition we hopeful that we can recognize that we may overlook after a video publication, the video on the internet was met with a strong reaction from the ASL-users community.

Many members of the community have objected to the video on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Kristin Henson's 'Dirty Signs with Kristin' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL Deaf community. Just a little summary so you know what my opinion is in the meantime... I think that a hearing person (like Kristin and myself) needs to understand their place in the Deaf-world and community. Kristin Henson's Youtube vlogs has attracted an audience of more than 1,5 million and 11,615 subscribers but Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'Dirty Signs With Kristin'. Leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning American Sign Language for Deaf and hearing adults as Kristin claimed "About Kristin Henson Page". Deafies viewers said incoherent videos makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what she is doing is a classic case of exploitation. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Kristin Henson, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the ASL-users community for cheap laughs and her 15 minutes of fame as seen on: A phrase in ASL just for Kristin Henson.

Last a few weeks ago, A Deaf vlogger's name is Victoria just released video with captions to response for "Dirty Signs With Kristin" - Featuring Kristin Henson in which the videos was under FIRE for flubbing a many wrong gestures of dirty signs and insulted the ASL-Culture community.

Kristin Henson's horrible dirty signs - They are just bad and her selection of really mocking and ludicrous phrases to "teach" to the public shows a huge disrespect for ASL-users and Deaf people. Petition about Kristen Henson's ridiculous dirty signs contract which ridicules real ASL and Deaf discourse.
