Why Deaf People Should Obey President Trump

Why Deaf Americans should OBEY Donald Trump, He is OUR president of the United States.

A Deaf pastor, Brad D. Schaaf explains why Deaf Americans should obey Donald J. Trump as he is OUR president of the United States.

So, that happened.

Let us pray.

Yes, of course, you can go back to sleep, but it won’t change the facts. Donald Trump is the president of the United States.

This sermon was given at Pinedale Christian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on January 22, 2017.

The humble, warm and engaging Trump we’d hoped to meet on Inauguration Day failed to make an appearance. We’ve heard he exists, but shtick is shtick, and Trump is Trump. He was, is and apparently intends to run the nation as a populist. Elites, stand down. To sum up Trump’s mercifully short-ish speech: We’re Americans, America comes first, we love America, America will be great again!

Family of Deaf Father Killed by Police Speak Out

Deaf News: Family members of Deaf father killed by North Carolina trooper speak out to the media in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Donors raised more than $2,600 for the family of the hearing impaired man killed when a state trooper shot him Thursday. Daniel Harris’ family says they will use the money to pay for his cremation.

Troopers say Harris was speeding and failed to pull over on I-485 Thursday night. When he did stop on Seven Oaks Dr., Trooper Jermaine Saunders says Harris advanced. That’s when he says he shot.

His immediate family members are also hearing impaired. His brother, Jay Harris, spoke to WCCB Charlotte through a sign language interpreter. “He was unarmed,” said Jay Harris. “And he is a Deaf individual, and I think that he was just afraid.”

Jay Harris thinks his brother was unaware Trooper Saunders was trying to pull him over for speeding. Trooper Saunders says he shot Harris because he was advancing and not following commands.

“He could not hear their warnings. He could not hear their commands to stop or to stay away from them,” said Jay Harris.

Harris was a father of a four-year-old little boy. Family says his mother is in the hospital with a heart issue since the shooting.

“He was shot, and now we’re left with nothing,” said Jay Harris.

They want the state to document in the DMV system when a driver is Deaf to alert officers when they pull over someone who is hearing impaired.

“What is wrong with us, and what is wrong with a system that allows this to continue to happen? It needs to stop,” said Jay Harris. “Daniel’s death represents that he is a hero in our Deaf community. He will raise awareness on this issue so that we can prevent this from happening to other Deaf people in our community.”

Deaf Man Killed In Shooting By State Police

Deaf man fatally shot by trooper after chase in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina -- A man killed by a state trooper in Charlotte after a traffic stop escalated into a chase is Deaf, according to neighbors.

Investigators say Trooper Jermaine Saunders attempted to pull over a Volvo on 485 for speeding. However, they say the driver, Daniel Kevin Harris, did not stop.

The chase continued off 485, to Rocky River Road exit, eventually ending at Seven Oaks Drive with both vehicles damaged.

"I was here in my driveway and I saw the highway patrol car come through and it was smoking really bad," said Mark Barringer. "About 10 seconds later, I heard one gunshot."

Barringer says when he went to take a closer look, he saw Harris in the middle of the street. He died just a few feet from his front door. Several neighbors have put flowers near where Harris took his final breaths.

"It was surreal, you just don't expect to see something like that," said Barringer. "When the gunshot went off, it was scary."

Detectives say Trooper Saunders and Harris got into "an encounter" before he fired his weapon. Neighbors say Harris' car spun out of control and was shot almost immediately after exiting the vehicle.

They say Harris was likely trying to communicate with the trooper using sign language before he was killed.

"They should've deescalated and been trained to realize that this is an entirely different situation, you're pulling someone over who is Deaf, they are handicapped," said Barringer. "To me, what happened is totally unacceptable."

Trooper Saunders has been placed on administrative leave.

The SBI is leading the investigation. They say they will review dash and body cam videos from Highway Patrol and CMPD.

Chick-fil-A Employee Signs To Deaf Customer

WATCH: Touching moment as Chick-fil-A employee signs to Deaf customer goes viral on social media.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- A mother and her Deaf daughter were moved so much after a North Carolina Chick-fil-A employee used American Sign Language while taking their order that the mom shared the touching moment on social media.

For the first time in her life, Cynthia Walker, a 20-year-old Deaf woman, was able to order her meal at the restaurant on Raeford Road by signing. Her mom, Terri Buelman, says she was surprised and overjoyed when she realized the cashier knew and used sign language.

Buelman says it was the first time Cynthia was able to order something without feeling uncomfortable with people staring at her.

"People just look at her, then they look at us at what we do, so we had to order for her," explains the mom about previous situations.

Buelman says they heard about a cashier at Chick-fil-A who knew sign language and had helped other Deaf and Hard of Hearing customers with their orders.

When they went there, they found Taylor Anez, a high school senior. After hesitating, Cynthia started signing and was surprised when Anez signed back. It was a monumental step of freedom for the young woman.

The restaurant manager didn't know Anez could sign, but the young cashier says her relatives are Deaf and she learned so she could communicate with them.

Cynthia's story and the video have gone viral. Her family has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money to get her a hearing service dog.

Police Uses Sign Language Saved Deaf Teen Life

Deaf News: Raleigh police officer uses sign language to talk Deaf ratchet teen off bridge in North Carolina.

RALEIGH, NC -- A Raleigh police officer used sign language to talk a Deaf 16-year-old off the Rock Quarry Road bridge over I-40 on Tuesday, according to the officer’s father and witnesses at the scene.

The mother of a Deaf teen says a Raleigh police officer saved her daughter’s life after he used sign language to help talk her off a bridge.

Maria Daley says she was “terrified and didn’t know what to do” as her daughter was standing on a bridge over Interstate 40 Tuesday afternoon.

She says she’s grateful for the officer who used sign language to communicate with her 16-year-old daughter until she came down off the bridge.

“If the officer had not been there, she probably would have jumped,” said Daley to WNCN. “Normally when the police are called, none of the officers know sign language. I’m very excited someone was out there to communicate with her.”

Raleigh police blocked all lanes near Rock Quarry Road starting around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The girl came off the bridge around 4:45 p.m. She was unharmed, police said, and was being evaluated at a local crisis center.

Daley says her daughter “got upset and said she was going to hurt herself” after Daley took away her phone. Daley later found a note left for her saying she was going to the bridge.

Daley says she was trying to protect her daughter by taking the phone away after she caught the teen using anonymous messaging apps on her phone, such as Kik. The popular messaging app has been linked to a growing number of child sexual abuse cases.

The officer has declined to be identified and the Raleigh Police Department says they have no American Sign Language training program. The officer learned how to sign on his own, police say.

One of the North Carolina Department of Transportation cameras picked up the officer making gestures to the girl. Witnesses tell WNCN they saw the officer communicate with the girl by sign language for about 30 minutes.

“It’s good that he knew sign language, I feel like more people need to learn it,” said witness Sean Day. “It shows that he had a lot of patience and he didn’t let whatever he had on his mind interfere with what was going on.”

Daley hopes the powerful moment will encourage more people to learn sign language, leading to more shared connections and maybe saved lives.

Deaf Man Dies In North Carolina House Fire

WATCH [CC] - Deaf News: Family tried to save Deaf man from fatal Smithfield house fire in North Carolina.

SMITHFIELD, NC -- One man died on Saturday morning in a house fire in Smithfield, North Carolina, officials said.

The fire at the home on 5th Street near the Smithfield Police Department was reported at 5 a.m., according to the Smithfield Fire Department. Fire Chief John Blanton said crews received a call for a fire with someone trapped inside the home and arrived on scene at 5:05 a.m.

Search and rescue crews found one victim dead inside.

Mamie Stewart lived in the home that caught fire. Stewart said her nephew Michael Caroll Davis, 43, who was Deaf, died in the fire.

“He made me feel good all the time,” said Stewart of her nephew. “He loved to make sure I had my coffee in the morning when I got up.”

Stewart said she was up very early Saturday morning, reading her Bible, while Davis was asleep upstairs. Her grandson came home and said he smelled something burning, so Stewart said she walked toward the kitchen.

“I heard something and there was nothing but smoke and stuff. It just engulfed the house,” she said. Stewart said she and others tried to go back upstairs to get Davis, but couldn't reach him.

“I’m running upstairs, trying to get upstairs and the smoke engulfed me. I couldn’t see nothing and I know he couldn’t hear me,” she said. “We couldn’t save him.”

Davis had lived with his aunt since his mother died when he was ten-years-old.

“He wasn’t my child, but I raised him as mine and I loved him just as much as my own child that I gave birth to,” said Stewart."I just thank God for all the good things that I remember him by."

The other seven people in the home, who were all relatives of Stewart, were able to escape. The smoke detector in the home wasn't working, she said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Johnston County Fire Marshal.

Deaf Hunter Crawls From Forest After Accident

Crawls out of woods, survives serious leg injury after deer stand falls.

GREENVILLE, North Carolina -- Reporter interview with Joe, who is Deaf, tells his story of falling out of a tree and breaking his leg during a solo hunting trip. It took him 12 hours to crawl from the forest and another several to find aid.

Joe Liuzza got home alive, just barely. Through grit and determination, he was able to win his battle against nature and pull himself and his mangled leg out of a swamp following a hunting-related accident near Robersonville that turned into a 14-hour ordeal.

Liuzza, 47, was home temporarily from the hospital on Dec. 13 and feeling a little more relaxed as he recounted the details of his harrowing experience.

It was easy to see in his features and by the steel cage wrapped around his right lower leg, rods poking through the skin to hold the disconnected portions of his bones in place that he had been through a struggle that he and his wife, Delia, owner of The Tipsy Teapot in Greenville, would never forget. She served as her husband's sign-language interpreter because Joe is Deaf... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Woman's Cat Seized By Animal Control

'My heart is just broken', a Deaf woman's cat seized by officers.

SHELBY, North Carolina -- A basket of cat toys sits forlornly on the carpet in Cindie Steever's apartment in Shelby along with an empty food bowl.

Steever said her small apartment feels barren and empty without Costello. For Steever, Costello was more than a pet. She was her ears. Steever can't hear a knock on the door. A ringing phone goes unnoticed. She speaks with the help of her fingers and an interpreter. Steever, who is Deaf, told The Star her small gray and white cat would alert her to sounds around her home. Through her interpreter, she described Costello as her "champion hearing cat."

Last week, Costello was taken by Cleveland County Animal Control officers when they were called to her home to remove some kittens. Steever's anguish cannot only be seen in her fingers, but her face. "I relied on her," she said.

Jacquelyn Moore, Steever's friend and interpreter, said Steever felt intimidated by several people. "She thought she was being forced to give Costello up," Moore said. "She felt she didn't have a choice."

Steever, who got Costello in 2011, said the cat recently had three kittens. Her landlord told her she had to find homes for the babies but that she could keep Costello. She was given a week... Read The Full Story.
