‘Switched at Birth’: ABC Family’s The teen soap Switched at Birth explores self-expression and the communication gulf between the Hearing and Deaf communities. Melody gives an impassioned lecture about how it’s not about hearing loss, it’s about Deaf gain, of a language, a community, and a culture.
When Marlee Matlin walked away with an Academy Award for her heart-wrenching turn as a Deaf custodian in 1986’s romantic drama Children of a Lesser God, it seemed as though film had finally encountered a definitive depiction of a Deaf individual and the often tenuous relationship between the hearing and the Deaf worlds. Television has lagged behind; nearly 30 years later, most TV shows still typically shove Deaf characters into the background or use them as props as part of a hearing person’s story.
A deft and intelligent take on the way in which we form our identities through self-expression, whether that be street art, spoken/signed communication, texting, or open dialogue among family members and individuals, as well as the communication gulf between the hearing and Deaf/Hard of Hearing communities. It’s also a show that doesn’t pander to its presumed audience.

Full Documentary Film: Mosdeux - The Deaf Family.
Mosdeux is a Deaf owned film studio which develops, produces and distributes film. It has produced several feature and short films targeting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
The Deaf founders, Chad W. Taylor and Wayne Betts, Jr. established Mosdeux to bring the cinematic perspective to the Deaf community with stories originating from the Deaf community.
The Deaf Family portrays a dysfunctional deaf family going through everyday trials and tribulations. As each character encounters and muddles through a new challenge, they come to realize that they must accept their own identities as Deaf individuals if they want to be accepted by everyone, including hearing people.

Going Berdy exclusive interview with the ABC TV show "Switched At Birth" star Sean Berdy.
LOS ANGELES -- Going Berdy has a wonderful opportunity to interview Sean Berdy, who plays "Emmet Bledsoe" from "Switched at Birth". We were allowed to ask 5 questions, but we were only able to record as of part of the 2nd question.
WHY IS THERE NO SOUND? We removed the sound so as not to confuse those who are reading the subtitles. There was an interpreter, but not everything that Sean said was translated orally, so we had to redo the translation for completeness. The interpreter who helped in translating the second time around is Jennifer. I (Kat, GB Admin) also translated a little bit.
WHY SO FEW QUESTIONS? We were asked to limit our questions to 5 maximum. We can only pray that we will have yet another opportunity such as this to interview Sean again, but in a more laid back state.
