Signs of Solidarity for Deaf Black People

Gallaudet University Professor Explains Deaf African Americans' Unique Sign Language.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Carolyn McCaskill, a professor in Gallaudet University Department of ASL and Deaf Studies, explains how Deaf African Americans show their shared identity through their unique sign language.

Sign language, like spoken language, has regional variations (people sign more slowly in the South, for example), as well as features that reflect gender, age, socioeconomic status and, it turns out, race.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

At 15, Carolyn McCaskill transferred to an integrated school, where she saw white students using one hand rather than two to convey terms such as “why” and “don’t know” and employing entirely different signs for everyday words. When she went home, she switched again to reassimilate to her own black culture, recalled McCaskill, who was on the panel.

McCaskill’s code-switching remains a common experience for Deaf black students, who often change to accommodate whites... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Astronauts - The Gallaudet Eleven

Deaf astronauts are known to history as the 'Gallaudet Eleven' helped NASA to study how spaceflight might affect astronauts.

WASHINGTON DC -- Before NASA could send humans to space, the agency needed to better understand the effects of prolonged weightlessness on the human body. So, in the late 1950s, NASA and the U.S. Naval School of Aviation Medicine established a joint research program to study these effects and recruited 11 Deaf men aged 25-48 from Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University). Today, these men are known to history as the “Gallaudet Eleven."

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

All but one had become Deaf early in their lives due to spinal meningitis, which damaged the vestibular systems of their inner ear in a way that made them "immune" to motion sickness. Throughout a decade of various experiments, researchers measured the volunteers' non-reaction to motion sickness on both a physiological and psychological level, relying on the 11 men to report in detail their sensations and changes in perception. These experiments help to improve understanding of how the body’s sensory systems work when the usual gravitational cues from the inner ear aren't available (as is the case of these young men and in spaceflight). "We were different in a way they needed," said Harry Larson, one of the volunteer test subjects.

The experiments tested the subjects' balance and physiological adaptations in a diverse range of environments. One test saw four subjects spend 12 straight days inside a 20-foot slow rotation room, which remained in a constant motion of ten revolutions per minute. In another scenario, subjects participated in a series of zero-g flights in the notorious “Vomit Comet” aircraft to understand connections between body orientation and gravitational cues. Another experiment, conducted in a ferry off the coast of Nova Scotia, tested the subjects’ reactions to the choppy seas. While the test subjects played cards and enjoyed one another's company, the researchers themselves were so overcome with sea sickness that the experiment had to be canceled. The Gallaudet test subjects reported no adverse physical effects and, in fact, enjoyed the experience. Test participant Barron Gulak later remarked about such experiments: “In retrospect, yes, it was scary…but at the same time we were young and adventurous.”

Based on their findings from a decade’s worth of experimentation, researchers gained insight into the body’s sensory systems and their responses to foreign gravitational environments. Through their endurance and dedication, the work of the Gallaudet Eleven made substantial contributions to the understanding of motion sickness and adaptation to spaceflight.

Deaf Difference + Space Survival is currently on display at Gallaudet University's Jordan Student Academic Center, open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. For more information, visit: https://www.gallaudet.edu/museum/exhibits/deaf-difference--space-survival-exhibit.

Lost River Vacations 'Deaf-Centric' Campground

Deaf entrepreneurs 'Lost River Vacations' offers the chance to stay at brand new tiny house resort on 22 acres of property in West Virginia.

WASHINGTON DC -- An opportunity to stay at a brand new, purpose-built, eco-friendly tiny house near the tranquil Lost River State Park is just one reward being offered by on Kickstarter. Backers that support the campaign can get hold of Lost River hats, shirts, mugs, limited edition photographs and prints, a five-night stay at Lost River Vacations, customized benches, the right to name a trail, and more.

Lost River Vacations and their campaign have already been presented in the Washington Post. The Kickstarter campaign will feature artwork from Deaf artists, designers and a Deaf-owned printing company. Funds that are raised in the campaign will go towards Lost River Vacations' campground, a Deaf-owned, built and operated campground for tired, nerve-shaken people seeking a secluded getaway deep in the hills of West Virginia.

Lost River Vacations owners Jane Jonas, Shawn Harrington, and Andrew St. Cyr want to add amenities to the resort to make it even more special for those that choose to stay there for a one-of-a-kind experience. Plans are in place to add a disc golf course, hot tub, and espresso trailer, as well as other accessories like a fire pit, outdoor lighting and furniture, deck and picnic table.

Viewing Lost River Vacations' tiny house Photos - WTOP.

The Lost River Vacations retreat in West Virginia is set on 23 acres of land just two miles from the Lost River State Park, making it perfect for those in need of a quiet escape surrounded by nature. More than a dozen Deaf-owned businesses have already contributed to the project, making it a wonderful example of the Deaf ecosystem working together for a common aim.

Already installed at the resort are a road and parking lot, electrical connections, a drilled well, septic, and a tiny house, which is almost ready for rentals. The customized house was built entirely by Shawn Harrington, co-owner of NSH Properties as well as co-owner of Lost River Vacations, and a team of talented, Deaf craftsmen. They plan to build more dwellings when funds are available, including different sized accommodations, from tiny houses to log cabins to treehouses. Approval is already in place for three more tiny houses.

When the resort is ready, Lost River Vacations aims to provide a cooperative membership and feature special closed weekends for the members, as well as provide general rentals to the public.

They would eventually like to fund projects such as non-profit camps for Deaf children. In the longer term, they envision purchasing a second plot of land to create retreats and facilities for Deaf non-profit organizations to contribute to the project, get involved, or find out more about the Kickstarter campaign, visit the link here: https://kickstarter.com/projects/lostriver/lost-river-vacations.

Deafness In Biblical - I Cannot Hear

The Biblical of Deafness "I Cannot Hear" by John Conrad Ruppel.

The Bible verses about "Deafness."

John Ruppel of Winnipeg attended the Full Gospel Church in Steinbach until he became a founding member of Calvary Temple of the Deaf Followship. He faithfully attended for 39 years. He wrote within a passionate about "I Cannot Hear" before he passed away in 2016 at age 77. He shares the song to you all with his love.

"I Cannot Hear"

Now in this life, I cannot hear. One day I will for Jesus cares.

I cannot hear the birds that sing, I cannot hear the bells that ring, I've never heard a baby cry, or heard the thunder in the sky.

Sometimes I'm lonely and I cry, I have to brush tears from my eye.

For in this life I cannot hear, One day I will for Jesus cares.

I thank my God that He saved me. I may be Deaf but I've been set free.

I have God's word in Heaven I will be, With Him for all enernity.

There I will praise the Lord and sing, There I will hear the bells that ring,

My Deafness gone forever more, I will sing with Him, my Lord adore, I will sing with Angels and happy be,

With Christ my Lord through eternity, For in this life, I cannot hear,

One day I will, for Jesus cares!

By John Conrad Ruppel.

The Deaf Will Hear, The Mute Will Speak:

They brought to Him one who was Deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him. Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!" And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly. And He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it. They were utterly astonished, saying, "He has done all things well; He makes even the Deaf to hear and the mute to speak." Mark 7:32-37.

The first time Deafness is mentioned in the Bible is Exodus 4:11.

Deaf School Versus Mainstream School

Hearing parents of a Deaf child: What are the differences between Deaf schools and Mainstream schools.

This video is for especially hearing parents of a Deaf child. This video shows and explains the differences between Deaf schools and Mainstream schools, hopefully to help you make informed decisions for your Deaf child, whether you should send your Deaf child to a Deaf school (also called a Deaf Institute, a school for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children) or if you should mainstream your Deaf child.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

For those who do not know what mainstream means, the mainstream definition from the Merriam-Webster dictionary reads, “to place (a student, such as a disabled child) in regular school classes”. Basically, it means to send your Deaf child to a hearing school, or mainstream school as some people call it. There are a few different options of mainstreaming.

Few public mainstream schools have Deaf & Hard of Hearing (D/HH) programs at mainstream schools… some Deaf children stay in the D/HH program all day, some others are mainstreamed into hearing classes for a part or all of the day accompanied by sign language interpreters. Another option of mainstreaming is to send your Deaf child to a school that does not have a Deaf / Hard of Hearing program, meaning your Deaf child would be mainstreamed in hearing classes all day, usually accompanied by a sign language interpreter and sometimes that also means your Deaf child could be the only Deaf kid at school or sometimes there may be a few other Deaf students also. These mainstreaming options are not mentioned in the video but will be discussed in a future video.

Quick statistics re: Deaf children- 2 or 3 in every 1,000 children here in the United States are born Deaf or Hard of Hearing (nad.org) and most of Deaf children, more than 90%, are born to hearing parents. And about 86% of Deaf students are in mainstream schools.

This video features a short campus tour of a school for the Deaf, a residential school for Deaf children at California School For The Deaf in Fremont.

The tour guide compares Deaf schools and mainstream schools and discusses the benefits and advantages of attending a residential Deaf school vs. attending a mainstream school. The tour guide also shares about Deaf Education, how different Deaf education is in mainstream schools compared to Deaf schools, which is very different… a very informative video for hearing parents who are wanting to learn more about Deaf education and options for their Deaf child.

Be sure to watch the following video after this, an interview with a Deaf football coach who strongly believes that Deaf children should go to Deaf schools. In the interview we talked about the pros and cons re: Deaf schools- both benefits & advantages and disadvantages. Link here: https://youtu.be/YGaxh0P4Vb4

What It's Like To Raise A Deaf Child

Raising a Deaf child: Parents share how they found out a child was deaf and how they raised a child.

Finding out your baby / child is Deaf can be devastating - but it’s not the end of the world. In this video, Ashley Clark Fry's parents share their experience of finding out she was born deaf and their journey raising her in the hearing world.

Did you know that many hearing parents of Deaf children do not learn sign language to communicate with their Deaf child? Growing up, Ashley had so many people-like teachers, interpreters, people working in the Deaf education field, etc. tell Ashley all the time how lucky she was to have her parents learning sign language to communicate with her. They were amazed at how well her parents handled having a deaf baby and raising a Deaf child with no prior knowledge about the Deaf community and sign language.

Ashley can’t imagine what it’s like to find out that your baby was born deaf. But she do know that it’s not the end of the world. She was born deaf and was raised by hearing parents and Ashley turned out okay. And my hope is that this video will reach new hearing parents to share and encourage that it’s not the end of the world if your baby is DEAF. It will have some tough moments, but it’s all about perspective and learning how to adjust and live a little differently.

Ashley wanted to interview her parents to share their story -- what it was like finding out that their baby was deaf and what it was like to raise a deaf child - and also to share what they decided to do and why they made the decisions they made in hopes that hearing parents of Deaf babies / children would find this and be encouraged and help them make more informed decisions. Back then, her parents didn’t have anyone to ask, and couldn't even Google it - as there wasn’t internet in 1989 when Ashley was born. She hope with this video is that hearing parents can make more informed and educated decisions for their Deaf baby / child.

Hope you enjoyed the interview!
