Study on Sarcasm and American Sign Language

Deaf News: University of Manitoba researchers study how people who are Deaf understand sarcasm.

WINNIPEG -- Researcher Nicole Hiebert studying how sarcasm is conveyed and understood among Deaf, Hard of Hearing. Researchers at the University of Manitoba are looking for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Manitobans to participate in a new study covering uncharted territory discovering how people who use American Sign Language convey sarcasm.

It's the first time researchers have looked at how adults who use sign language communicate and understand sarcasm. For those in the community, it's no secret.

"There isn't a lot of research. We certainly know [sarcasm is] prevalent in sign language usage, but there is not that research that actually provides evidence how sarcasm is relayed," said Rick Zimmer, who co-ordinates the ASL interpretation program at Winnipeg's Red River College.

Zimmer is Deaf, as is his wife, Kyra and son Cody. Kyra and Zimmer are both instructors at RRC, and Zimmer said sarcasm is a part of his instruction teaching hearing interpreters how to understand and convey sarcasm between people who use ASL and the Hearing community.

"I do it by demonstrating sarcasm and in that way they see it and learn it," he said. "Whether or not interpreters are actually capable of using it and conveying sarcasm themselves is another question."

That's where the U of M's Nicole Hiebert comes in.

"I've just been really fascinated and passionate about signing for my entire life pretty much," she said. "I've had a deaf friend since I was really young."

Now, she's melding her experiences in the Deaf Studies program with the research of Melanie Glenwright, an associate professor who specializes in sarcasm and sarcasm comprehension for the U of M's psychology department.

Interpretive Sign Languages Mashup 'F**k You'

'Fuck You' by Cee Lo. - Interpretive Sign Languages Mashup - One Song, Many Interpretations!

A variety people giving their personal interpretive performances are sign language interpretations of the song "Fuck You" by Cee Lo.

ROCHESTER, New York -- Marc Marschark, Ph.D., is a Professor at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, a college of Rochester Institute of Technology, Editor of the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, reflects on how a partnership with Oxford University Press has helped the journal to fundamentally change research in the field of Deaf studies, language, and education.

Professor Marschark is the founding Editor of the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education and Series Editor for Perspectives on Deafness , both published by Oxford University Press.

Professor Marc Marschark's primary research and teaching interests focus on language and cognition among Deaf and Hearing Adults; interactions of language, cognitive, and social development of Deaf children; and links between cognitive processes (e.g., memory, problem solving) and literacy among Deaf students. He is now developing a research program concerning several aspects of sign language interpreting.

Si5s - ASL Literacy & Establish ASL Corpus

Si5s org is a non-profit organization to spread ASL literacy and establish ASL corpus across the ASL community.

Si5s is a writing system used for American Sign Language (ASL) that resembles a handwritten form of SignWriting. It was invented in 2003 in New York City by Robert Arnold.

Si5s is the English spelling of the name for American Sign Language in writing. We provide workshops, presentations and training on ASL writing for K-12 education, ASL classes, and the Deaf/ASL community.

Deaf Interpreters: The State of Inclusion

WATCH: Deaf Interpreter Professor, Nigel presented, StreetLeverage.

Nigel Howard talk explored some of the perceptions that challenge better integration of Deaf interpreters into the field and into daily practice. Most notably, the perception that ASL-English interpreters have that requesting to work with a Deaf interpreter is an indication of an inferior skill-set.

Additionally, he highlighted that the definitions ASL-English and Deaf interpreters hold of each other, correct or not, is the basis of their effectiveness working together and that both have equal responsibility for the processing of information and outcome of the communication. Douglas College Instructor Builds Bridges Between Deaf and Hearing Communities:

For Nigel Howard, working at Douglas College is all about building bridges between the Deaf and hearing communities.

"I am the only Deaf instructor nationally who teaches courses about topics other than interpreters, sign language and Deaf culture," says Howard.

In addition to teaching for the Program of Sign Language Interpretation (INTR), Howard instructs classes on personal and professional development, wellness and community in other programs in the Faculty of Child, Family and Community Studies. While students are required to only use American Sign Language (ASL) in INTR classes, Howard lectures with an interpreter in his other courses.

"There's a pretty progressive attitude here at Douglas College," says Howard.

Howard, who has taught at the college for about 12 years, enjoys elements of both INTR and other courses.

"I get to see both cultures and languages working in this setting. The variety helps me become flexible. I see what's out there in the world in other programs and bring it back to INTR. You need to be skilled in both cultures and languages to move between them," says Howard.

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- “Hello, welcome to Kings. My name is Ashley. I’m your server. What can I get you to drink?”

Waitress Ashley Carney uses sign language as she waits on Taylor Doyka. Taylor, Deaf since birth, appreciates the effort made on her behalf.

Her friend, Emily Gabriel, herself a part-time waitress at Kings in Delmont, taught fellow employees the art of sign language.

“Emily had everyone come back in the back and we all came in and learned a little bit of everything,” Ashley recalls. “She went through as much as she could, and then we tried to copy her.”

Emily is a junior, minoring in sign language, at Saint Francis University in Loretto. As part of a class project, she asked manager Jim Pochedly if she could teach sign language to a couple of waitresses.

Pushing Science’s Limits In Sign Language

ASL Terp Lydia Callis: Pushing science’s limits in sign language lexicon.

NEW YORK CITY -- Imagine trying to learn biology without ever using the word “organism.” Or studying to become a botanist when the only way of referring to photosynthesis is to spell the word out, letter by painstaking letter.

For Deaf students, this game of scientific password has long been the daily classroom and laboratory experience. Words like “organism” and “photosynthesis” to say nothing of more obscure and harder-to-spell terms have no single widely accepted equivalent in sign language. This means that Deaf students and their teachers and interpreters must improvise, making it that much harder for the students to excel in science and pursue careers in it.

“Often times, it would involve a lot of finger-spelling and a lot of improvisation,” said Matthew Schwerin, a physicist with the Food and Drug Administration who is Deaf, of his years in school. “For the majority of scientific terms,” Mr. Schwerin and his interpreter for the day would “try to find a correct sign for the term, and if nothing was pre-existing, we would come up with a sign that was agreeable with both parties.” ... Deaf with a capital 'D' In today’s world and the Deaf community find this distinction to be highly important.

Iowa State Daily - Deaf with a capital 'D' In today’s world, being politically correct is often hard to do without offending someone. However, for the Deaf with a capital “D” community, phrases and even capitalization or noncapitalization of the word “deaf” can make a huge difference.

Jonathan Webb, American Sign Language instructor and interpreter, explained that if someone is “Deaf,” that means they are culturally Deaf.

“Deaf individuals don’t consider themselves as disabled; they see themselves as a cultural and linguistic minority,” Webb said. “They don’t see themselves as a disability group because they have a shared set of values, shared behavioral norms, shared belief system and a shared language.”

Webb explained that asking a deaf person which type of deaf they are is not considered offensive because the ASL language is very direct.

“Asking someone directly, ‘Do you consider yourself lowercase ‘d’ deaf or capital ‘D’ Deaf,’ if they don’t know the difference, if they go, ‘What do you mean?’ then more than likely they are lowercase ‘d’ deaf,” Webb said. ASL Is A Gift Translated By Deanne Bray

"ASL is a Gift" is a poem written by Julie Rems-Smario and translated by Deanne Bray.

Final revision of American Sign Language translation on September 21, 2012. It was June 2012 when Wayne Betts gave one small suggestion in adding something to ASL. He signed SI5S. I expanded on that idea and made this version into the translation that I am fully content and will stick to this.

University Students Educated Of The Audism

Audism - Understanding its meaning and implications in the Deaf community.

EUGENE, Oregon -- You've heard of sexism, racism, anti-Semitism... How about audism? Audism is discrimination based on the ability or inability to hear. Students met members of the local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.

Johanna Larson, University of Oregon, American Sign Language Instructor, moderated a screening of the documentary film, Audism Unveiled, and a panel discussion hosting members of our local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.

The film and discussion facilitated an examination of the rich and complex identities of Deaf Culture through "real life experiences from Deaf people of varied social, racial, and educational backgrounds-showing how audism does lasting and harmful damage." The event also included live transcription for the signing impaired.

ASL Education: Advice For The ASL Students

This video is in response to another, named "American Sign Language Teaching, On Behalf of the Deaf Community."

Rather than attack teachers with blanket statements, which may or may not be justified on a case-by-case basis, it's best that students be directly educated to choose the best ASL teachers.

If you, as a student, would read every Amazon.com review in deciding whether or not to purchase a $10 cookbook, but blindly spend hundreds of dollars on an ASL course you know nothing about, you have to examine your priorities, frankly.

If you want to take ASL and really learn the language, you cannot simply rely on the knowledge of college administrators who hire adjunct instructors. You have to ask people who know much more. The answer may surprise you. The best available teacher might be hearing. But, if that's the case, then I can practically guarantee that your teacher did everything they possibly could to learn directly from the Deaf community. You must accept this path to learning as well.

Don't become discouraged. Learn ASL. But to teach, you absolutely must have skills on par with the best of the best ASL teachers. Would you want anything less to be true of your own teachers? "American Sign Language Teaching, On Behalf of the Deaf Community."

ASL Teachers Criticism of ASL Music Video

The expert of ASL teachers criticism of music video.

The expert ASL teaching consultant saying "No Church In The Wild - JAY-Z & Kanye West (Sign Language)" That video is NOT sign language at all.

I am a hearing ASL teacher, this is my personal opinion of the recent "No Church in the Wild" video posted by 3 hearing ASL students. I apologize for the background noise, I made this video in my classroom. Here is a transcript for the non-ASL community: Hello, I'm Katie (my sign name). I teach ASL.

I wanted to comment about a video I recently watched , "No Church In The Wild (Sign Language)". That video is NOT sign language. Honestly, I would use that video to show my students what NOT to do when signing music.

Now, I don't want to insult the three boys in the video. I think it's really cool you enjoy and want to sign music. I think it's awesome that you are so motivated, and I encourage you to continue improving your skills. Socialize with the Deaf community, get involved, learn, and gain experience from signing masters.

BUT... your current video is lousy. You have "dead faces"... no facial expressions or body moments, no grammatical structure... it's like you just randomly grabbed words out of thin air. Your video isn't clear, either.

Honestly, that video would be very embarrassing for an ASL teacher. And embarrassing for hearing people. I'm hearing. I would never take advantage of the Deaf community, of their language and culture, like you did. I'm sorry, but you took advantage of them, and that's not appropriate.

I encourage you to continue to improve yourselves, and I promise you, 10 years from now, you'll look back at your "No Church for the Wild (Sign Language)" video and be embarrassed of yourselves, too.
