Real Interpreter of the Nelson Mandela Memorial

WATCH: Real Interpreter: Bringing the Deaf community real sign language interpreting of the Nelson Mandela memorial by Convo.

AUSTIN, TX -- The Convo VRS company provides the Deaf community REAL sign language interpreting of the Nelson Mandela memorial at realinterpreter.com.

An incident occurred during the memorial service in which a man, now dubbed the “#fakeinterpreter”, stood next to speakers and interpreted the entire event in sign language.

However, none of his signing was legitimate and the Deaf community was not given accessibility to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela. This site is our way of honoring him while bringing language accessibility to the Deaf community all over the world, just what Mandela would have wanted.

We want this to be a place of community exchange and resources. We welcome submissions of speech translations in your country's sign language. Together, we can show the world what REAL sign languages look like. Contact submit@realinterpreter.com if you’d like to contribute.

Nelson Mandela was honored by loved ones, world leaders, and thousands South Africans in a memorial service on December 9th, 2013. Mandela was a one-of-a-kind human being who devoted his life to ending racism, poverty, and inequality. Nelson Mandela's legacy lives on.

Real Interpreter is brought to you by the team of Convo, a Deaf-owned and Deaf-run VRS company in USA. Visit convorelay.com.

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Obama administration to recognize American Sign Language. Here's the video clips of the petition information in ASL with captions. Deaf community have to ACT now to cherish ASL which is a part of Deaf culture.

For more than a hundred years, American Sign Language (ASL) has been persecuted as a "lesser" language. It is a homegrown and complete language that has survived efforts to wipe it out.

Yet today, ASL is still considered "foreign" and not given the respect and protection it needs. Many states have passed laws allowing credit for ASL classes as a foreign language but they have stopped short of recognizing its benefits as a language of instruction in schools, despite studies proving its benefits for students.

Official federal recognition will finally give ASL the "welcome home" it needs. We need 25,000 by December 12, 2012.

Please signatures the ASL Petition now.
