Giving Deaf Kids The Chance To Hear
HearAid Foundation: Giving Deaf kids the chance to hear when health insurance fails.
NBC Left Field: Mary and Wes Rinella are Deaf. While Mary was raised with American Sign Language (ASL), Wes learned speech with hearing aids, and now they want to give their three Deaf children the chance to choose which language they prefer. The problem? Hearing aids aren’t covered by health insurance.
Health insurance in California, and at around $4,000 a pair, they’re too expensive to buy out of pocket. That’s where Tanya Penn and the HearAid Foundation step in since 2011 they’ve given out 270 hearing aids to families in need.

Deaf Football Team On Microsoft Surface TV Ad
Microsoft finds its latest inspiration in this All-Deaf American high school football team.
FREMONT, California -- The Eagles are the high school football team at the California School for the Deaf (CSD). They use Microsoft Surface for their game preparation, developing the playbooks that help them win big.
During this weekend's NFL playoffs on NBC, Microsoft debuted "Football, Teamwork and Technology," an ad featuring the Eagles, the California School for the Deaf's football team.
"We're a brotherhood, we're a team," a player signs.
Football is among the American sports that strikes an immediate emotional chord. In this case, it's also compelling to see how teamwork and communication--so critical to sports philosophy--play out among the Eagles. It's not something we get to see often.
And here's what we see: less shouting and more tactility, with pensive shots of eyes that follow and interpret the split-second movements of hands, faces and bodies. Collaboration, we suddenly realize, is tangible--something you can see and touch. Amid all this are shots of plays, made mobile and more shareable by the magic of technology.
"We use the Surface to communicate and prepare," the player signs, and at the end, a narrator drives the tablet's value add home: "For any player, for any coach, for any team, the art of collaboration builds champions."
Get it? Because the Surface facilitates collaboration. We can roll with that, but something happens between that statement and the tagline that immediately follows--"Empowering us all: Microsoft."
How do you go from being one useful tool in a collaborative arsenal to Empowerer in Chief?
If you're a high school football fan who hasn't heard of the Eagles, that has more to do with the priorities of broadcast than its capacity to decimate. Microsoft made a smart choice in associating the Surface with a team that's both serious on-field and a blossoming subject of mainstream interest.
In October, the Eagles were featured in ESPN's first-ever football broadcast to feature an all-Deaf school, the Geico ESPN High School Football Showcase, where they destroyed Woodland Christian's Cardinals, winning 43-0.
In fact, over the course of its last season, the Eagles lost only twice--to the Indiana School for the Deaf, and to Berean Christian--and otherwise outscored opponents by an average margin of 52-8.
The team was also profiled in ESPN's E:60 Silent Night Lights (shown below), and in an "Underdogs" episode for Sports Illustrated some years before.
When it comes to winning, technology is secondary to group cohesion. There's more to the Eagles' success than its choice of hardware--they've got discipline, brotherhood, high stakes, something to prove, and, yes, strong plays.
So, it isn't the Surface (much less Microsoft) that empowers the Eagles. If they had to use binder paper, or sticks and rocks, to sketch plays, we're convinced they'd be just as strong on the field.
Instead, it's the Eagles that empower the Surface, whose track record is somewhat less objectively impressive. There's nothing wrong with being one good tool in a winning arsenal; it's a respectable position in a context that, frankly, resembles teamwork.
And what's kryptonite to a team? The one guy (or in this case, brand) that thinks he's responsible for all the magic.

Burger King's ASL For The Deaf Community
#WhopperSign - Burger King's finally speaks, by signing, for American Sign Language Day near Gallaudet University campus.
WASHINGTON DC -- Burger King asks fans to come up with a Whopper sign by Tim Nudd. The days when he would pop up, unannounced, in your bed in the morning, Burger King's King character has never actually spoken a single word, preferring to let his creepily silent visage speak for him. But now, to celebrate National American Sign Language Day, the King is speaking up by signing.
And he's asking BK fans to come up with an official sign for the Whopper sandwich. #WhopperSign.
"The Burger King brand is built not only on including everyone, but celebrating everyone," Fernando Machado, the fast-food chain's svp of global brand management, said in a statement. "National ASL Day felt like a perfect opportunity for the King to extend our brand mantra and engage with the ASL community on such a great day."
It also has the King interpreting a recent TV spot in ASL, as you can see below.
BK has also created an ASL version of its logo, and is making a scholarship donation benefiting students who are dedicating their studies to ASL language and interpretations.

Deaf Can Coffee - Jamaican TV Commercials
WATCH [CC] - Deaf teenagers uses sign language in Jamaica Company television commercials.
KINGSTON -- The Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf went into the coffee business. The students from the "Deaf Can Coffee Company" make your favourite flavors of coffee for every occasion and moment.
A video capturing the purpose and vision of Deaf Can Coffee, a not-for-profit coffee shop seeking to engage, equip and empower Deaf youth. We will accomplish this through a sustainable coffee venture known for a memorable experience, great product and talented staff.
What began as a small idea of packaging and selling coffee for a rural, Deaf coffee farmer grew as word spread and people wanted more. However, one farmer could not meet the demand and so we considered options to increase the supply of roasted coffee. From there we began roasting coffee at the Kingston campus of Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf in an effort to train and expose teen students to the art of coffee roasting.
The challenges of sourcing dry beans and getting licensed in Jamaica as a coffee brand soon became a barrier that we thought might stop the initiative completely. The vision, however, simply shifted from being all about roasting coffee to a focus on brewing the coffee as well and creating a completely new experience for the marketplace. Boycott Wells Fargo Ad 'Learning Sign Language'
Franklin Graham calls for Christian boycott of Wells Fargo for featuing lesbian moms, who learns American Sign Language their advertiser.
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Rev. Franklin Graham is changing which bank his organizations will use because he objects to a lesbian couple and their Deaf daughter who appears in a Wells Fargo ad.
Graham is calling on Christians to boycott corporations that promote homosexuality, and says he will do his part by moving all of his ministries' money out of Wells Fargo.
Graham says he is not targeting companies that hire or serve gay and lesbian customers because that's a part of doing business. But he said he wants Christians to stop giving their money to businesses that use their advertising dollars to promote homosexuality. Graham is the CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse.
He says one way Christians can speak out is by not doing business with those who he says promote sin and stand against God's laws.
A spokesperson for Wells Fargo says the bank has proudly supported the LGBT community for a long time and the advertisement reflects the company's values.
The Charlotte Observer reports that accounts for Graham’s ministries could total in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Graham says he plans to publicize a list of companies that feature same-sex couples in their advertising.
A spokesman for North Carolina-based BB&T, a statewide LGBT rights group based in Raleigh said Graham is on the losing side of moral history.

Deaf Filipinos Get To Hear For The First Time
Deaf people were unable to contain their tears of joy after hearing with the hearing aids their families speak for the very first time.
MANILA, Philippines -- Spotify teamed up with Starkey Hearing Foundation to give Deaf people across the Philippines the chance to hear for the first time.
A new video, created by streaming service Spotify and hearing aids manufacturer Starkey Hearing Foundation, captures the incredible moment that the men and women, who live in Puerto Princesa, one of the poorest areas in the Philippines, are made able to hear sounds, after being given new, very sensitive hearing aids.
The four-minute clip follows each of the participants as they go about their day-to-day lives, while they explain how being Deaf has affected them and their families.
'I want nothing more than to hear my children': Emotional video captures the incredible moment three Deaf people hear the voices of their families and friends...

Wells Fargo Ad: Learning American Sign Language
The US bank is promoting its embracing of diversity with a series of new adverts, one of which features a lesbian couple who are learning sign language for a very special reason.
It’s becoming more and more common for big companies to highlight their diversity credentials and forward-thinking attitudes by featuring Gay people in their advertising. In recent months, businesses as diverse as Nikon, Cheerios and Hotwire have featured gay couples in commercials.
Now it’s Wells Fargo’s turn. The US bank is rolling out seven adverts as part of a new brand push under the banner ‘Why I Work’.
The first, revealed last week, is called ‘Learning Sign Language’. It features a female couple who are both learning sign language. The reason why? They’re about to become the new, adoptive mommies to a little girl with impaired hearing.
RELATED: Boycott Wells Fargo Ad 'Learning Sign Language'
The commercial doesn’t fail to tug at the heartstrings while at the same time demonstrate the diverse nature of Wells Fargo’s clients. It’s the bank’s first national ad campaign to feature a same-sex couple.
The sign language advert was created by ad agency BBDO, who were appointed by Wells Fargo last year. Its executive creative director, Matt Miller, told AdAge that he was at first apprehensive that the bank – might resist the idea behind the latest campaign. However, the reverse was true and they embraced the concept.

Glide - Video Messaging In The Deaf Community
Next Generation Video Messaging in the Deaf Community.
#YourGlideStory - Over the past few months, you've let us know that Glide is the best way to communicate visually, and we're extremely grateful to all of our users in the Deaf/HoH community for their continued support.
Glide is a video messenger that allows you to send and receive video messages that can be seen live (as you're recording) or later (like a text message).
There are already loads of great video chat apps out there. We're not trying to replace them, we are giving people a more convenient way to keep in touch through video that doesn't need scheduling. Traditional video chat requires you and your friends to be online at the same time, which isn't always possible. The great thing about Glide is that you can send or watch a message whenever you want, regardless of whether your friends are online.
RELATED - Deaf Community Discover The App 'Glide'
Glide is a private messaging service. Only friends in the chat you send a message to will see it. You and your friends can also share messages from Glide to social networks and friends outside the app. Sending messages to Glide users anywhere in the world is 100% free.

Deaf and Hearing News - Deaf Family
Short film: How does Deaf and Hearing Network impact a Deaf family?.
DHN is a place where everyone can get the news in the language that suits them best, whether they are Deaf or Hearing. This is the first of five installments to show you that DHN is the #NewsForEveryone. How does DHN benefit you? Tell us in the comments below or on social media.
DHN is a news agency out of Phoenix, Arizona. We incorporate American Sign Language, spoken English and captions into each broadcast. There are 48 million Deaf or Hard of Hearing people in America and the majority of them are born into hearing families. Very few of those families will learn sign language - American Sign Language, ASL. This gives the entire family access to news.
Videographer: David Banen
Editor: Peyton Gallovich
Music: Jeff Southwick
Actors: Abrams-Gay Family
This is the first news show to involve all three forms of communication and give information relevant to everyone whether they are involved in the Deaf community or not. What most people fail to realize is that English and ASL are two completely different languages with their own grammatical structures. Plus, English is a second language for most deaf people and the lag and inaccuracy in live captioning can make daily news a daunting task.
DHN hopes to grow into a national, daily broadcast with news segments and other network programs. We currently air on local channels and online.

Deaf NFL Player Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks
Interview with the NFL's Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks.
SEATTLE, Washington -- A television commercial starring Seattle Seahawk’s fullback Derrick Coleman is the latest Internet sensation. Coleman is the only athlete in NFL history to play offense, despite the fact he is legally Deaf.
Now, he’s getting ready to break one more barrier - the Super Bowl.
When the Seahawks take on the San Francisco 49ers, no one will be paying better attention than Coleman. “I have to be aware,” he told CBS News’ Bill Whitaker. “I have to be focused more than everybody else.”
Diagnosed with profound hearing loss, Coleman relies on lip-reading and his own unique way of communicating with the quarterback.
"He knows to look at me if he makes an audible at the line of scrimmage,” said Coleman. “He knows just tell everybody and just turn back at me one more time and he'll tell me the play." It's the way he's always played the game.
When the world tells you "no", you have two options: You can roll over and quit or you can trust your power. Derrick Coleman, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, trusted the power within. Although he's Deaf, he never let adversity stand in his way, on his road to the NFL. Share to inspire others to trust their power within and achieve their dreams. #TrustYourPower.
He told Whitaker that he’s “capable of doing what everybody else can do,” despite his hearing loss. “You can't use your problem as an excuse,” he said. “Because you use an excuse, you're not going to get to your dream. “
He was taught that philosophy at an early age. To really know Coleman’s story you have to meet the parents, his mother, May Hamlin and father, Derrick Coleman, Sr. "You feel that uncertainty, that fear as a fear as a parent, you know, that, is my child going to be OK," said Coleman, Sr.. His mother told Whitaker that Coleman was “definitely teased, he was bullied” and kids would call him “four-ears."
“My mom always said people who make fun of you and are trying bring you down - they're already down. They're trying to bring you to their level,” said Coleman.
These days Coleman wears a skullcap to keep his hearing aids in place under his helmet, but as a kid, he had to improvise... Read The Full Story:

SMU Ads Targeting Deaf Students
Discover how Ginny's SMU experience encouraged her to start up a social enterprise for the Deaf.
Ginny Ong Jing Yun is undergraduate in Bachelor of Science (Information Systems Management) and Started up a social enterprise for the Deaf. "I thought that nobody would understand what I was saying. Over the years, Singapore Management University (SMU) slowly gave me a lot of tips on how to participate effectively. I learnt how to be more outspoken, more confident of myself.
Two years ago I set up this social enterprise it's called iDeaf-Connect. My aim is to use this company to create Deaf awareness. Also, we wanted to have a business to provide jobs for the Deaf. We aim to use this place as a training hub.
I will go out and meet my clients. I will give talks and I will share with them how they can work with the Deaf better. The broad-based curriculum at SMU gave me a lot of knowledge. It helped me to understand better how companies run their business.
You have a lot of projects so you have to face a lot of deadlines. It motivates me to be quick, be creative, think out of the box to finish the project. So the same thing can apply to my company as well. To me, if not for the interactive style (of education) in SMU, I wouldn't be here talking to you today." Welcome to SMU.
