Officer Arrested For Breaking Into Gallaudet

A Prince George's County police officer accused of breaking into an office building at Gallaudet University has been arrested and suspended.

WASHINGTON DC -- An off-duty Prince George’s County, Maryland, police officer has been suspended after his arrest in D.C. on charges of misdemeanor burglary and destruction of property.

Robert Grimes, 28, of Northeast D.C., is a three-year veteran of Prince George's County Police Department.

He was off-duty in the early morning hours of Nov. 24 when Gallaudet University campus police said they found him in a campus building, bloody and shirtless, with injuries to his hands, right shoulder and stomach.

Officers said Grimes was highly intoxicated and told campus police that he did not know what happened or how he got there.

Court charging documents said that Grimes entered the campus building by breaking a first-floor window and police found a bloody shirt in a second-floor bathroom.

Grimes is accused of destroying property including a plastic globe, flags, a door and two windows.

At his Tuesday arraignment at D.C. Superior Court, Grimes entered a not guilty plea and was released from custody.

He is due back in court on Dec. 30.

Prince George’s County police launched an internal affairs investigation of the incident.

Deaf Male Model - Introducing Nyle DiMarco

WATCH [ASL/CC] - America's Next Top Model's first ever Deaf contestant on why he refuses to let his disability hold him back.

LOS ANGELES -- A model who is set to become the first ever Deaf person to compete in hit reality series America's Next Top Model has revealed why he refuses to let his disability stop him from reaching the top of the fashion industry.

Nyle DiMarco, 25, is set to feature on the upcoming 22nd season of the hit CW series, which was created by supermodel Tyra Banks. But while some might believe he is at a disadvantage when compared with his co-stars, the Washington-based model insists that his disability actually makes him all the more unique.

'I strongly believe that being Deaf gives me a huge advantage because of my native language, American Sign Language' Nyle revealed to Washington Life.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

'ASL requires the use of facial expressions and body language expressions. With the rules of ASL immersed into my soul, it helps to bring out stories when I'm modeling for a photo, and makes for an interesting character when I'm acting.'

And, perhaps unsurprisingly, the fact that Nyle is Deaf certainly isn't the first thing that people notice about the budding model, who was contacted by the producers of America's Next Top Model after they saw him guest-starring in hit sitcom ‘Switched at Birth’.

'The show found me through my accounts on social media and models.com, which is where I showcase my work,' Nyle explained.

'Honestly, America's Next Top Model wasn’t something that I had ever really thought about doing before but when I spoke with casting, I thought, “why not!” The rest is history.'

While Nyle is unable to reveal how the show, which he has been busy filming for a number of weeks now, has been going, he hopes that his appearance in the series, no matter how far he ends up going, will help to inspire other Deaf people to pursue their dreams... Read The Full Story.

Baltimore Riots: Erupts Into Violence, Chaos

Violence erupts in Baltimore after Freddie Gray's funeral.

BALTIMORE, Maryland -- #BaltimoreRiots, April 27, 2015 - A state of emergency has been declared and the National Guard activated after the US city of Baltimore, Maryland erupted in violence on Monday.

Maryland Governor, Lawrence Hogan declares state of emergency in Baltimore as protests grow violent. Hundreds of rioters looted shops and burned buildings following the funeral of a 25-year-old black man called Freddie Gray who died after he was injured in police custody.

At least 15 police officers were injured in direct confrontations with the gangs of black youths. Maryland Governor Lawrence Hogan announced the emergency measures including the imposition of a curfew beginning Tuesday night.

“I’ve not made this decision lightly. The National Guard represents a last resort in order to restore order. Look, people have the right to protest and express their frustration, but Baltimore city families deserve peace and safety in their communities.”

Gray’s death latest at the hands of police.

Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 when he fled from police in a high crime area. He was carrying a switchblade knife, and he was put inside a transport van to be taken to a police station.

At some point, Gray suffered a spinal injury that led to his death a week later. Two officers have been accused of failing to belt him into his seat securely and of not giving him timely medical attention.

Gray’s death has sparked days of street protests and raised tensions in Baltimore. His family however has condemned the violence.

The killing of several unarmed black men by white police officers in recent months and decisions by grand juries not to indict the officers have triggered large-scale protests across the United States. Watch on CNN - Captions.

Courtroom Sign Language Prohibited Raise Concerns

Maryland courtroom sign language restrictions raise concerns, only the official interpreters and trial participants are allowed to use ASL.

FREDERICK, MD -- A judge in the trial of a Deaf man is prohibiting signing among the audience, a move that has raised concerns among some in the Deaf community.

Clarence Taylor III, who is Deaf, is accused of inappropriately touching Maryland School for the Deaf students when he was a student life counselor and dormitory aide at the school's Columbia campus. MSD also has a campus in Frederick.

Judge William Tucker of Howard County Circuit Court prohibited signs and "facial gestures" among spectators at Taylor's trial, according to a report from Capital News Service.

Only the four official courtroom interpreters and trial participants communicating with them will be allowed to sign and gesture in the courtroom.

Some advocates for the Deaf took issue with the way the decision singled out American Sign Language.

Howard A. Rosenblum, CEO of the National Association of the Deaf, said in a statement that the NAD understands the need to preserve order in the courtroom, but any restriction on communication needs to be applied evenly in any language to all spectators.

"The judge's order in this case appears to impose restrictions solely on Deaf and Hard of Hearing spectators and is unacceptable," he said.

David Martin, an assistant professor who manages ASL studies at Frederick Community College, is an MSD alumnus and has been following the trial.

He said that it would be difficult for a Deaf person to avoid making gestures.

“From my perspective, you know, with a Deaf person, It's going to be a challenge for a Deaf person to have no expressions and no signing,” Martin said through an ASL interpreter.

Still, Martin said the judge's decision was fair as long as hearing people were subject to the same restrictions... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Advocates Sues U of M Over Stadium Design

National Association of the Deaf sues University of Maryland for failing to provide closed captioning at sports games.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Aberdeen Patch: A lawsuit filed in September by the National Association of the Deaf against the University of Maryland for its lack of amenities for Deaf fans at sporting events is just one of many such efforts to ensure hearing-impaired sports enthusiasts can enjoy themselves at stadiums.

Association CEO Howard A. Rosenblum said his organization has successfully sued other athletic organizations over the same issue, including the Washington Redskins, Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky.

The association successfully sued the Washington Redskins in 2011. According to lawsuit documents, the Redskins were required to “provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing fans equal access to the aural information broadcast over the stadium bowl public address system at FedEx Field.”

The University of Maryland lawsuit details complaints brought to the association by Sean Markel and Joseph Innes, two Deaf sports patrons who regularly attend Terrapin sporting events at Comcast Center and Byrd Stadium. Markel and Innes filed another complaint against the university on Oct. 16.

“This is an action to enforce the rights of individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and to ensure full and equal access to the defendant University of Maryland, College Park’s football and basketball games and other programs, services and activities taking place at defendants’ venues and on the University of Maryland athletic department website,” reads the official complaint filed by the association on behalf of Markel and Innes.

Maryland Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications Brian Ullman released a statement in response to the first complaint saying the university is committed to making sure Terrapin fans with disabilities can enjoy the school’s sporting events. He said the team already offers closed captioning through a special website that can be displayed on smart phones and tablets...

Gallaudet: Alleged Assault High School Students

Gallaudet University: Police probe sex assault involving 2 Gallaudet high school students during school trip.

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Anne Arundel County police are investigating an alleged assault involving two students from Gallaudet University’s secondary school during a school trip to Annapolis.

Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said Tuesday that police are conducting a criminal investigation into the alleged incident on a bus in the county on Saturday morning. He says police were notified Sunday night.

University spokeswoman Kaitlin Luna says the students are enrolled in the school’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf, a program for high school age students at the university’s Washington, D.C., campus.

She says the incident occurred during a chaperoned, school-sponsored trip, but referred questions about the incident to police... Read The Full Story.

Protesters For Dr. Angela McCaskill At Gallaudet

Deaf Protesters demand Gallaudet reinstates Dr. Angela McCaskill.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Question 6 Maryland’s marriage equality initiative took center stage in front of Gallaudet University in D.C. Thursday as dozens of protesters gathered in support of Dr. Angela McCaskill, the university’s chief diversity officer.

Chanting, “You don’t need permission to sign a petition,” members of the faith community held signs and marched near the Gallaudet main gate.

The university placed McCaskill on administrative leave after it found that she signed a petition to put the Question 6 referendum on Maryland’s November ballot. If successful, Question 6 would allow gay and lesbian couples equal rights under Maryland’s civil marriage laws. But the protesters say that the underlying premise of Question 6 equality and fairness is the reason why Dr. McCaskill should be reinstated... Read The Full Story.

ABC7 interview with Dr. Angela McCaskill on the broadcasting television.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Dr. Angela McCaskill speaks out about Gallaudet dust-up. In her first interview since controversy erupted at Gallaudet University, the school’s chief diversity officer who was placed on leave for signing a petition to put Maryland’s same-sex marriage law on the November ballot says she's not anti-gay and feels bullied.

Angela McCaskill sat down exclusively with ABC7’s Mike Conneen at her home in Upper Marlboro to respond to criticism for inking the petition.

“Signing that petition is a right that I have as a citizen of the state of Maryland. It simply means that I want to see this very sensitive issue put on the ballot as a referendum in the state of Maryland,” McCaskill said.

Her attorney, J. Wyndal Gordan, says McCaskill will not express her personal view on the matter. He says she will do that in the voting booth. Gordon says McCaskill “is considering all options, and not ruling out taking legal action,” hoping to get reinstated at Gallaudet... Read The Full Story.

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Dr. Angela McCaskill speaks out on bullying by Gallaudet University president. So far, the best argument for protecting marriage may be sitting in the President's office of Gallaudet University. There, voters got a unique view of the real-life persecution that awaits anyone who opposes Maryland's same-sex marriage. Last week, when Gallaudet's Dr. Angela McCaskill was outed for signing a Petition in favor of a public vote on marriage, she was exiled from the University she called home for 23 years. Now, instead of sitting in her office helping students, she's meeting with attorneys, trying to come to grips with President T. Alan Hurwitz's decision to banish her from campus. Calling McCaskill's actions "inappropriate," Hurwitz is putting a face on the intolerance that FRC and other marriage advocates have warned about for years.

By all reports, his ruthlessness is already taking its toll. According to her pastor, Rev. Dr. Lee Washington, Dr. McCaskill and her family have been the targets of threats and intimidation ever since the story broke. "As her church family, we stand firmly by her side and welcome all persons of good faith regardless of their ideological views to denounce these actions of cowardice and bullying." Even the The Washington Post warns that Gallaudet's overreaction could seriously "undermine" the effort to redefine marriage. "The surest way to repel voters--and to vitiate the marriage movement's broader goals and values--would be to say, or even seem to say, 'Agree with us or else.'"

Unfortunately, that's always been the underlying, totalitarian message of the homosexual movement. The only difference here is that Maryland voters have been warned: public dissent will not be tolerated. Not surprisingly, liberals are racing to cover up Gallaudet's mess, insisting that they believe in free speech as much as the next guy. Tell that to the wedding cake bakers, the T-shirt makers, the bed and breakfast owners, the military chaplains, the high school teachers, the restaurant owners, the photographers, the churches, the Massachusetts parents, and others who were fired, sued, harassed, fined, and suspended. Like Angela, their biggest crime was having an opinion contrary to the radical Left--something one former FRCer knows a lot about.

When Teresa Wagner left Family Research Council, she had plenty of offers to join university faculties and teach law. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Wagner joined the staff as a part-time associate director of its legal writing program. She also applied to be a full-time teacher at the law school, but her application was mysterious denied. It wasn't for lack of experience, since Teresa was the most qualified candidate. Nor was it for lack of legal expertise, since the person offered the position "had never practiced law, had no legal publications, and had no prior successful teaching experience." It was because of her work in the pro-family movement. As seen on article Lawsuit Pits Political Activism Against Campus Diversity.

Teresa will try to prove as much in federal court, where her appeal kicks off today. Although people have sued for discrimination in hiring decisions, experts say Teresa's case is the first of its kind. Unlike other plaintiffs, she has evidence. Like Angela McCaskill, Teresa Wagner belongs at the University. Until then, both women are giving students a serious education in political bias. ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Gallaudet Official's Lawyer Speaks About Petition. An attorney for Gallaudet University's chief diversity officer who has been placed on leave for signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law on the ballot says she only signed it so the issue could be decided by the democratic process.

Gallaudet Worker: ‘Pro-Democracy,’ Not Anti-Gay.

The Washington Post - Dr. Angela McCaskill addresses a news conference about being put on leave from her job after signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law on the ballot for voters to decide. She is asking to be reinstated to her position.

Gallaudet University’s embattled chief diversity officer said she wasn’t taking an anti-gay stance when she signed a Petition advocating for Maryland's same-sex marriage law to be put to a vote. Instead, Angela McCaskill says she was joining 200,000 others in standing up for the rights of voters to make decisions at the ballot box.

“I thought it was important that as a citizen of the state of Maryland I could exercise my right to participate in the political process. I am pro-democracy,” McCaskill explained at a news conference Tuesday in Annapolis, speaking out for the first time since the university’s president placed her on administrative leave last week after it became public that she had signed the petition... Gallaudet University Put Dr. Angela McCaskill For Opposing Gay

Gallaudet put Dr. Angela McCaskill for opposing gay, question 6 doesn't.

ANNAPOLIS Maryland -- Dr. Angela McCaskill has worked on the campus of an American college for the Deaf and hard of hearing for over 20 years. If the marketplace of ideas and freedom of expression is not prized in that environment, how can we ever expect it to survive elsewhere if same-sex marriage activists prevail?

Gallaudet University is catching a fair bit of criticism after the federally-chartered college placed Dr. Angela McCaskill, its chief diversity officer, on paid leave. The decision was made after it came to officials’ attention that the administrator reportedly supported a controversial referendum that challenges Maryland’s same-sex marriage law.

Now, in an unlikely fit of agreement, both conservatives who agree with McCaskill’s stance and gay rights groups who oppose her views are coming to the academic’s defense... Read The Full Story.
