Officer Arrested For Breaking Into Gallaudet

A Prince George's County police officer accused of breaking into an office building at Gallaudet University has been arrested and suspended.

WASHINGTON DC -- An off-duty Prince George’s County, Maryland, police officer has been suspended after his arrest in D.C. on charges of misdemeanor burglary and destruction of property.

Robert Grimes, 28, of Northeast D.C., is a three-year veteran of Prince George's County Police Department.

He was off-duty in the early morning hours of Nov. 24 when Gallaudet University campus police said they found him in a campus building, bloody and shirtless, with injuries to his hands, right shoulder and stomach.

Officers said Grimes was highly intoxicated and told campus police that he did not know what happened or how he got there.

Court charging documents said that Grimes entered the campus building by breaking a first-floor window and police found a bloody shirt in a second-floor bathroom.

Grimes is accused of destroying property including a plastic globe, flags, a door and two windows.

At his Tuesday arraignment at D.C. Superior Court, Grimes entered a not guilty plea and was released from custody.

He is due back in court on Dec. 30.

Prince George’s County police launched an internal affairs investigation of the incident.

Lost River Vacations 'Deaf-Centric' Campground

Deaf entrepreneurs 'Lost River Vacations' offers the chance to stay at brand new tiny house resort on 22 acres of property in West Virginia.

WASHINGTON DC -- An opportunity to stay at a brand new, purpose-built, eco-friendly tiny house near the tranquil Lost River State Park is just one reward being offered by on Kickstarter. Backers that support the campaign can get hold of Lost River hats, shirts, mugs, limited edition photographs and prints, a five-night stay at Lost River Vacations, customized benches, the right to name a trail, and more.

Lost River Vacations and their campaign have already been presented in the Washington Post. The Kickstarter campaign will feature artwork from Deaf artists, designers and a Deaf-owned printing company. Funds that are raised in the campaign will go towards Lost River Vacations' campground, a Deaf-owned, built and operated campground for tired, nerve-shaken people seeking a secluded getaway deep in the hills of West Virginia.

Lost River Vacations owners Jane Jonas, Shawn Harrington, and Andrew St. Cyr want to add amenities to the resort to make it even more special for those that choose to stay there for a one-of-a-kind experience. Plans are in place to add a disc golf course, hot tub, and espresso trailer, as well as other accessories like a fire pit, outdoor lighting and furniture, deck and picnic table.

Viewing Lost River Vacations' tiny house Photos - WTOP.

The Lost River Vacations retreat in West Virginia is set on 23 acres of land just two miles from the Lost River State Park, making it perfect for those in need of a quiet escape surrounded by nature. More than a dozen Deaf-owned businesses have already contributed to the project, making it a wonderful example of the Deaf ecosystem working together for a common aim.

Already installed at the resort are a road and parking lot, electrical connections, a drilled well, septic, and a tiny house, which is almost ready for rentals. The customized house was built entirely by Shawn Harrington, co-owner of NSH Properties as well as co-owner of Lost River Vacations, and a team of talented, Deaf craftsmen. They plan to build more dwellings when funds are available, including different sized accommodations, from tiny houses to log cabins to treehouses. Approval is already in place for three more tiny houses.

When the resort is ready, Lost River Vacations aims to provide a cooperative membership and feature special closed weekends for the members, as well as provide general rentals to the public.

They would eventually like to fund projects such as non-profit camps for Deaf children. In the longer term, they envision purchasing a second plot of land to create retreats and facilities for Deaf non-profit organizations to contribute to the project, get involved, or find out more about the Kickstarter campaign, visit the link here: https://kickstarter.com/projects/lostriver/lost-river-vacations.

WASHINGTON DC -- Deaf Advocates, Gallaudet University and the National Association of the Deaf SLAMS Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) posted letter on their website to Washington Post.

The Washington Post published an article "A ‘Dancing With the Stars’ contestant is vying for a White House Correspondents’ Dinner invite" about Nyle DiMarco's The ASL App, an app that teaches conversational in American Sign Language.

DiMarco comes from a Deaf family and American Sign Language is his native language. He is a spokesperson for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids - LEAD-K. He is a signer and creative collaborator on an app that teaches conversational American Sign Language (ASL) for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing child.

However, the AG Bell's via internet letter about Nyle DiMarco regarding The ASL App on Washington Post. Therefore, Thousand of ASL-user individuals consistently find disgusting and sparked a chorus of outrage after AG Bell's an article "Dispelling Myths About Deafness" on their website.

Deaf, CODA, or ASL-users describe the AG Bell's 'History Repeats Itself'.

Barb DiGi's blog and vlog depicts the vlog review from 2007 - 2011 showing how AG Bell Association has engaged in bullying actions against the signing Deaf people. Recently, there is an appalling wave of reaction by the Deaf community in regards to AG Bell's response to Washington Post's "The Reliable Source" who accuses Nyle DiMarco dispelling the myths about deafness. Read transcript at Deaf Progressivism - A.G. Bell Associaiton Is The Bully.

Jason Tozier: Alexander Graham Bell thinks that he has more influence in America folklore than Santa Claus. It is painful to watch the various periods of hate as they unfold and take shape. It is indicative of a change in the world of hate when bigots begin to form mergers between themselves and change their policies to match the power. Alexander Graham Bell’s Name: Hate Speech with Spin Wheel.

Deaf blogging has reacted to an article from the CEO of AG Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Meredith Sugar's letter about Nyle DiMarco:

UPDATE: The AG Bell Association published a statement responding to numerous letters from the Deaf Community on their website:
AG Bell responds ASL Community about Nyle DiMarco.

The AG Bell promotes American Sign Language is wrong, dishonesty, misleading parents and #LiesAGBellToldMyParents. Although it is history but today the practice, the principle and the philosophy still discriminate against sign language which Alexander Graham Bell is the father of Audism.

The Alexander Graham Bell Association's 'history repeats itself':

Deaf and Hard of Hearing survivors of the Alexander Graham Bell Association.

AG Bell Donors: All of you who have donated or supported Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to stop doing more than harms to the Deaf children by stop sending donations to AG Bell, because of your donations, AG Bell continues to lie to thousands of the people such as parents of Deaf children in particular so to brain-wash the parents into harms their child and stripping down their own rights by putting cochlear implants or hearing aids.

Here is the organizations, groups, individuals and businesses that donates to AG Bell: AGB 2014 Annual Report and 2015 AG Bell Symposium.

Deaf Canadian's Gallaudet Dream

Winnipeg family faces $200K bill to send Deaf son to the US university.

WINNIPEG -- Manitoba family appeals to province to help fund Deaf students to go to only Deaf university in world.

A Manitoba family is calling on the provincial government to better fund schooling for Deaf students after they incurred thousands of dollars of debt for just one year of university for their son.

Last year, 18-year-old Cody Zimmer left his home in Winnipeg to attend Gallaudet University in Washington D.C., the world's only university exclusively for Deaf students.

"My vision of what it might be like was completely obliterated  - it was so much more than what I expected," said Cody. "I made so many friends so quickly. I was involved in sports and soccer. It was just such a quick year because it was so exciting. It felt like a blink and it was done."

But his education came with a hefty price tag. One year of undergraduate study cost his family $56,000 (including tuition, dorm fees and health insurance.)

And financial assistance was limited; Cody's application and appeal to have the full cost covered were denied by the province. Instead, he got about $10,000.

"They would support him in going [to Gallaudet], however, they'll only pay at the level of what tuition would be at the University of Manitoba," said Rick Zimmer, Cody's father.

The province used to fund the cost of Deaf students attending Gallaudet completely, but they've since reduced the amount of money students can apply for and instead encourage them to go to a Manitoba school and use interpreters.

Officials with the Manitoba government said the province runs a $1.9-million-a-year program called marketAbilities, "that provides the same amount of funding to a student pursuing training out of province as would be available to the student if they chose to study in Manitoba. Courses that have no equivalent in Manitoba may be fully funded."... CBC News with Closed Captioning.

Why fundraising campaign? - April 14, 1997 Cody Zimmer was born and from that moment I knew he was bound for greatness. You see Cody is Deaf and he comes from a long line of Deaf family members and I knew from the moment we found out he was Deaf that he was going to change the world.

Cody and his family have spent countless hours advocating for basic human rights that Deaf people are denied. It is now time for Cody to pursue his dream of going to university. Cody wanted to go to a university where everyone shares his culture and language. Unfortunately there is only one university in the world that provides this opporunity That university is Gallaudet and it is located in Washington D.C. Gallaudet Boot Man For Seeking Underage Girls

Deaf News: Gallaudet University boot man seeking 100 underage girls sex distributed door-to-door for marriage and sex.

WASHINGTON -- Gallaudet University has removed from campus a man seeking 100 underage girls to marry and to make his concubines, officials said.

The hearing man was last seen Sunday going door-to-door in University Park, distributing leaflets that also espoused racist views. Police chased him out of the town near University of Maryland, saying he needed a permit to distribute the flier.

It appears the same man has visited Gallaudet, the D.C. school for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in Northeast D.C.

“Last week, a man carrying the same letter was seen on the Gallaudet University campus and was subsequently asked to leave and prohibited from returning,” said Theodore Baran, Director of Gallaudet University Department of Public Safety, in a released statement.

The man has no known connection to the university, he said.

The man, who is from Grand Rapids, Mich., has claimed to be Deaf and used index cards to communicate with town police and residents in University Park. One witness described him as “a gentlemen with a terrible message.” His identity has not been released because he has not been charged with a crime...

Gallaudet Football The Nation's First University For The Deaf

The storied football team of Gallaudet, the nation's first university for the Deaf. Football team's joy shines during one amazing season.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Next spring marks the 150-year anniversary of a school called Gallaudet University, which became the first university in the country to focus on the Deaf.

Today, the school has more than 2,000 students. They also have a dominant and undefeated team on the football field.

When Coach Chuck Goldstein came to Gallaudet from his high school coaching job, he had a lot to learn.

Every member of the Bison football team is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, so he had to learn to sign language, and find other ways to communicate with his players.

"I've not used a whistle in five years," Goldstein said. "Our players can't hear whistles."

Gallaudet, the nation's first university for the Deaf, has a long and storied football program. The Bison invented the huddle, thought up by a quarterback in the 1890s as way to keep other players from seeing what they signed.

But the school, famous for its contribution to the game, wasn't particularly good at playing it.

Senior quarterback Todd Bonheyo said: "I think the hardest part of this season is actually believing that's real. Based on previous seasons, we've never had this type of luck or this type of winning streak. We always come up as a losing team and now we're the winning team."

This year, Gallaudet is 9-0, and in the running for the school's first men's NCAA Division Three championship.

The team only has 54 players, half the size of most in its division, but between the white lines, it only takes 11.

Senior Adham Talaat is a 6-foot-6-inch, 270-pound defensive end. He might also be the first Gallaudet player in history to make it to the NFL...

Food Market Becomes Hub For Deaf Community

VOA's Michael Lipin reports on the key elements that help to draw many Deaf customers to Union Market.

WASHINGTON -- A year-old food market in a Washington, D.C., neighborhood has become a unique hub of shopping and dining for the city's Deaf community.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

One feature that draws many Deaf and Hard of Hearing customers to Union Market is the ability to communicate with staff members like Thadeus Suggs. The 23-year-old lunchtime food vendor from Seattle interacts with them easily because he is fluent in American Sign Language.

Suggs, who also is Deaf, began working at the historic market weeks after it opened in September 2012, following a major renovation.

Since then, Suggs has been on leave from his undergraduate studies across the street at Gallaudet University - the only university in the world specifically designed to accommodate Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

With the help of Gallaudet interpreter Carolyn Ressler, Suggs explained what he likes about his job.

"One nice thing is it is so close to Gallaudet, which by the way is the 'Deaf Mecca'," he said. "And with that, we are providing services to the Gallaudet community as well as the community at large... Read The Full Story.

Gallaudet: Alleged Assault High School Students

Gallaudet University: Police probe sex assault involving 2 Gallaudet high school students during school trip.

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Anne Arundel County police are investigating an alleged assault involving two students from Gallaudet University’s secondary school during a school trip to Annapolis.

Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said Tuesday that police are conducting a criminal investigation into the alleged incident on a bus in the county on Saturday morning. He says police were notified Sunday night.

University spokeswoman Kaitlin Luna says the students are enrolled in the school’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf, a program for high school age students at the university’s Washington, D.C., campus.

Deaf President Now: News Footage Perspective

WATCH [ASL/CC] - News footage perspective in 1987 at northeast campus of Gallaudet University.

WASHINGTON -- On August 24, 1987, Gallaudet's 6th president, Dr. Jerry Lee, announced that he would be leaving the presidency of Gallaudet University.

It prompted new (or rekindled) discussion among the Deaf community that it is time for Gallaudet to have a Deaf president leading the one and only Deaf university in the world. The search committee narrowed down from 67 applicants to 3 finalists: Dr. Harvey Corson (Deaf), Dr. Elizabeth Zinser (hearing), and Dr. I. King Jordan (Deaf).

On March 6, 1988, it was expected that the board would announce the new 7th president in the field house at 8:30 pm. Instead of making a formal announcement, the audience was told that "a news release had been hastily distributed two hours earlier" revealing that Dr. Elizabeth Zinser has been selected as first 7th president of Gallaudet University.

The reaction to the news was "met with shock, anger, disbelief, and, in some cases, tears" because every effort were made to the Gallaudet Board of Trustees with strong urgency that it is time for Gallaudet to have a Deaf president to lead the university. Upon the selection of Dr. Zinser, the birth of the now well-known Deaf President Now (DPN) protest officially began.

‘Switched at Birth’ Episode 1.6 Million Viewers

Gallaudet University uses all-sign language episode of ‘Switched at Birth’ to air new commercial.

WASHINGTON -- Gallaudet University is taking advantage of a special episode of ABC Family’s ‘Switched at Birth’ Monday night, as a commercial for the university will air during an episode of the show that is told entirely in American Sign Language and based on real-life events that happened at the school itself.

The all-sign language technique for the episode is a first for a scripted series on mainstream television, according to the network, which will air Gallaudet’s commercial twice during the hour. The episode takes place on the 25th anniversary of the Deaf President Now movement at Gallaudet in March 1988, when students and faculty protested after the university instated a hearing president over two Deaf candidates.

Switched at Birth,’ which wraps up the first half of its second season next week, follows the chaos that takes place when two high school girls find out they were sent home with the wrong families as babies in the hospital. One of the daughters is Deaf, resulting as a driving plot force in the series. The show, which debuted in June 2011 to more than 3 million viewers, has attracted around 1.7 million people per episode this season.

In Monday’s episode at 8 p.m., the fictional Carlton School for the Deaf is on the brink of closing, so the students protest, inspired by the real-life circumstances at Gallaudet in the 80s. The whole hour will be in sign language, with accompanying subtitles... Read The Full Story.

On ABC Family, an Episode in Sign Language - Nytimes.com: On Monday night, ABC Family did something that no commercial television outlet in the United States had ever done: it broadcast an entire episode of a show in sign language, with closed captioning turned on by default.

Advocates for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing cheered the move, and they wondered: would viewers tune in specifically for the almost-silent episode of the series, ‘Switched at Birth,’ one of ABC Family’s most popular? Or would viewers turn it off, potentially perturbed by the lack of audio? There was a normal musical score, and a scene at the beginning of the episode with audible dialogue, but the rest of the dialogue was in sign language.

Broadly speaking, neither outcome came true. The show’s overnight Nielsen ratings were down, but only slightly. Most fans of the show stayed with it 1.6 million, according to the overnight ratings. The series this season has averaged 1.7 million viewers.

In the show’s target demographic, women 12 to 34, 748,000 viewers tuned in, down just a little bit from the season average of 777,000. About a quarter of those viewers usually record the show and watch it later, so the final ratings won’t come in for a while.

“Switched at Birth” features several Deaf or hard-of-hearing characters, so every episode incorporates sign language in some way. But Monday’s episode went further... Read The Full Story.

Technology Helps Deaf Students At Gallaudet

Technology helps special education students' at Gallaudet University.

WASHINGTON -- Gallaudet University in Washington is the world's only university with programs designed for Deaf students and those who are hard-of-hearing. But hearing disorders do not keep students from learning because of the university's heavy use of technology.

Students use interactive technologies in and out of the classroom, technologies such as webcam interactions on Skype. More than 90 percent of Gallaudet's classes use some form of online communication. Professor Gene Mirus says technology is important in the learning process. "So there are, you know, televisions and webcams and things like that. Students are able to record themselves doing projects in sign language, and do that at home. We use a lot of computer technologies, and webcams and things like that."

Sonam Jain, a student from Sri Lanka, says his years at Gallaudet have offered experiences different from his childhood. "Sri Lanka has states. And they don't have one standardized sign language. So, in the United States, for example, there are signs for almost everything that you would ever want to talk about.

In Sri Lanka, there isn't. And so there are many things you find it very difficult to talk about in Sri Lanka." Another student says Gallaudet has helped him with his communication skills, especially with ASL - American Sign Language.

"When I grew up, I was signing in a way that was more English-like. Here at Gallaudet, I sign more like I sign in ASL - more visual and the communication is much easier, and the social life is wonderful here." That increased ability to communicate helps many students. "A lot of networking and reaching out to people and I've learned from - I've had role models that I've learned from here.

They provide workshops, there are a lot of sporting activities, intramural events that I've been involved with." "Most students increase their self-confidence, and improve their communication abilities and they leave Gallaudet ready to face the world." I'm Jeri Watson.

25th Anniversary of 'Deaf President Now'

Gallaudet University marks 25th anniversary of 'Deaf President Now' protests in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Gallaudet University is marking the 25th anniversary of the “Deaf President Now” (DPN) protests. The grassroots effort was launched by students in 1988, generating national and international headlines and resulting in the university’s first Deaf president.

When the Board of Trustees selected the only hearing candidate as Gallaudet University’s next president 25 years ago, students organized a week of protests, chanting “Deaf president now.”

“I can remember when we were looking for a Deaf president I actually made a comment that I hope we see a Deaf president in my lifetime. So I think that gives you an example of how far away it seemed to me,” says Fred Weiner.

Since 1988, three Deaf men have served as president of the university. This week, they gathered to reflect on the so-called DPN movement’s anniversary.

“Expectations were very high, very, very high,” says Dr. I. King Jordan, Gallaudet’s first Deaf president. “But there were also expectations that I couldn’t succeed.

People told me to my face that we doubt you can succeed as president.” Most students attending the reunion were not even alive in 1988... Read The Full Story.
