Sign 'ILY' Pins Support For The Women's March

These pins support human rights just in time for the Women's March in the United States and across the globe.

WASHINGTON, DC -- With thousands of pins, a couple from Michigan are hoping to bring a little love, compassion and support to America in time for the Women's March in Washington, D.C.

Kate Lind, 32, and Nate Stevens, 30, are behind Pincause -- a $5 pin they designed with artist Penelope Dullaghan that features the American Sign Language (ASL) sign for "I love you." Their goal is to raise $200,000 by giving $2 of each sale to the ACLU and Planned Parenthood ($1 to each organization).

Since launching after Christmas, they've sold more than 7,500 pins and raised more than $15,000 for the causes. With only a week and a half until Inauguration Day and the march, the pair is pushing for a last-minute rush of orders to get to rally-goers in time.

In a conversation with Mashable Tuesday from their 500-square-foot Ann Arbor, MI apartment, which is overflowing with pin orders, Lind and Stevens said they wanted to show support for women's issues and and civil liberties.

"Something about the symbol and design is so evocative," Stevens said about the pin. "It starts conversations."

And that's what they want. When Michigan went "red" in November, the two realized they needed to understand more about their Donald Trump-voting neighbors.

The pins, Stevens said, "create more of a loving way to start conversation," rather than throwing around hate and anger.

Campaign and election pins are nothing new, but the couple wanted to design something that connected people and "something that anyone can wear no matter where they are in the country."

Lind said she wanted to create something with a colorful hand from the start. An artist friend came up with a fist, which Lind said felt not quite right. "We've seen a lot of hate spewed in every direction," but she believes "compassion and love will bring people together."

She remembered learning ASL in middle school and how perfectly succinct and effective the "I love you" sign was.

They decided to go with that symbol, and even though they weren't directly connected to the Deaf community, they've received touching feedback from people with Deaf relatives. "We have more of a connection to that community now," Stevens said.

Just a few weeks later, momentum is picking up and more people are posting pictures wearing the pins, including many shots of mothers and daughters flashing the "I love you" sign.

"It's cool to be raising money through beauty and love," Stevens said.

Start looking out for the pins -- the couple hopes they'll be worn at the main march and at rallies all over the country. They said the pins are about creating a community.

Deaf Teacher Discriminated at Alberta School

Edmonton Public Schools must pay $15,000 for discriminating against an Alberta School for the Deaf teacher who is Deaf, a recent Alberta Human Rights tribunal decision says.

EDMONTON, AB -- Edmonton Journal: The school district breached human rights law in its dealings with teacher Gail Lidkea when her new service dog prompted them to move her to a small, isolated classroom and limit the dog’s movement around the school, human rights tribunal chairman William Johnson ruled last month.

Lidkea, who has profound hearing loss, had been teaching for 17 years when, in 2009, she became eligible for a service dog from the Lions Foundation of Canada, the ruling said. During training in Ontario, she discovered her new Labrador/golden-retriever cross, Widget, was supposed to stay with her most of the time and should not be left alone for more than three hours.

When her co-workers at the Grade 1-12 school found out Widget would come to the building daily, some raised concerns about their allergies and the possibility medically sensitive students in Lidkea’s class might be affected.

On the advice of a district administrator, the school’s principal put Lidkea on paid leave for three weeks while the school decided how to accommodate the dog and people sensitive to its dander.

“I was very anxious because I didn’t understand what was going on,” Lidkea testified at a human rights hearing. “I was upset. I was hurt and disappointed because I was hoping for a smooth transition, which wasn’t happening.”

The principal and district’s then-director of staff relations, meanwhile, were questioning Lidkea’s need for the service dog, according to emails exchanges submitted as exhibits to the commission.

Then-principal Sandra Mason wrote to her superior that although Lidkea’s dog was for safety and security, the school was purposefully designed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and staff.

“Am I, as the principal, going to be ‘set up’ for every other staff member to want to explore the same thing? (This may be a stretch but it is a concern for me and I can see this becoming an issue),” Mason wrote.

Without consulting Lidkea, the district assigned the teacher new classes in two small rooms in a remote part of the building. In an email to the principal, Lidkea said she was “heartbroken about losing the students I am so close to.”

The teacher was told to leave her dog in her classroom when she went to school events or made photocopies in the office. One time, she and her dog were told to stand in the doorway during a staff meeting to keep the dog away from an allergic co-worker.

“I feel alienated from my colleagues and the students. I feel anxious and uncertain when it becomes necessary to go to other locations in the building and I must leave Widget behind … I can’t help feel, however, that a certain amount of over-reaction is happening,” Lidkea wrote in a January 2010 letter to the school.

Lidkea continued to teach for two years in rooms she described as cramped, inappropriate for students with behavioural issues and full of safety hazards for students, Widget and herself. The isolation continued nearly two years after the school had ruled out allergies as a concern.

What happened after 2012 is unclear from the document. Lidkea could not be reached for comment.

The human rights tribunal chair said the school district could have found a more appropriate space for Lidkea to work, and failed to properly assess the health effects of the dog on other staff and students in the school.

Edmonton Public Schools did not provide a response to questions by Thursday evening.

Lidkea’s lawyer said he has not received any notice of appeal from the school district.

Johnson’s Oct. 14 ruling awarded Lidkea $15,000, plus interest from December 2009, for “mental anguish, injury to dignity and injury to self-respect.”

Saskatchewan Needs More ASL Interpreters

Deaf News: The Deaf Canadian community feels marginalized in Saskatchewan, says human rights report.

REGINA, SK -- The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission is pushing for more sign language interpreters in the province. The commission has just released a report identifying some of the barriers faced by the Deaf community.

Chief Commissioner David Arnot said people in the north suffer from a serious lack of access to services.

"There are seven trained and certified interpreters in Saskatchewan, as compared to Manitoba that has 70," he said. "So I think that is clearly an area that needs to improve."

The report also calls for universal screening of newborns and linking diagnosis with appropriate treatment.

Arnot said the commission is helping the Deaf community to meet with policy makers to address these issues. He said he believes there is the political will to make changes.

Ontario Deaf Schools Staff Layoffs

The layoff of 56 full-time staff from Ontario’s Provincial Schools will hurt the province’s most vulnerable students with disabilities and severely impact the families’ rights to accessible education.

TORONTO, Ontario -- Vulnerable students in Provincial Schools to suffer from layoffs. The Ministry is moving this work to contingent part-time workers, and away from support workers who have over 20 years’ experience and who have made significant impacts in the lives of parents and students with disabilities, Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU President.

The layoff of 56 full-time staff from Ontario’s Provincial Schools will hurt the province’s most vulnerable students with disabilities and severely impact the families’ rights to accessible education. Ontario government reduces full-time workers who teach students with disabilities.

Warren (Smokey) Thomas, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) said that the these students, who are Blind, Deaf, Deaf-Blind and learning disabled deserve far better from the Ministry of Education.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia -- According certain beliefs in Cambodia, any disabilities is the result of a bad karma due to bad actions in a previous life.

The NGO Aide et Action runs a project which aims at changing people's behaviours, mentalities and integrate Deaf and Blind children into society. Through education, Aide et Action fights against exclusion and discrimination.

In Cambodia, the percentage of the population living with disabilities is one of the highest in the world. At least 650,000 Cambodians live with a disability, and the exact count may be as high as 1.4 million.

The incidence of disability is also expected to increase in the future. Despite the fact that many Cambodians have at least one disability, the country does not have adequate legal provisions to protect the human rights of people with disabilities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Question 6 Maryland’s marriage equality initiative took center stage in front of Gallaudet University in D.C. Thursday as dozens of protesters gathered in support of Dr. Angela McCaskill, the university’s chief diversity officer.

Chanting, “You don’t need permission to sign a petition,” members of the faith community held signs and marched near the Gallaudet main gate.

The university placed McCaskill on administrative leave after it found that she signed a petition to put the Question 6 referendum on Maryland’s November ballot. ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Dr. Angela McCaskill speaks out on bullying by Gallaudet University president. So far, the best argument for protecting marriage may be sitting in the President's office of Gallaudet University. There, voters got a unique view of the real-life persecution that awaits anyone who opposes Maryland's same-sex marriage. Last week, when Gallaudet's Dr. Angela McCaskill was outed for signing a Petition in favor of a public vote on marriage, she was exiled from the University she called home for 23 years. Now, instead of sitting in her office helping students, she's meeting with attorneys, trying to come to grips with President T. Alan Hurwitz's decision to banish her from campus. Calling McCaskill's actions "inappropriate," Hurwitz is putting a face on the intolerance that FRC and other marriage advocates have warned about for years.

By all reports, his ruthlessness is already taking its toll. According to her pastor, Rev. Dr. Lee Washington, Dr. McCaskill and her family have been the targets of threats and intimidation ever since the story broke. "As her church family, we stand firmly by her side and welcome all persons of good faith regardless of their ideological views to denounce these actions of cowardice and bullying." Even the The Washington Post warns that Gallaudet's overreaction could seriously "undermine" the effort to redefine marriage. "The surest way to repel voters--and to vitiate the marriage movement's broader goals and values--would be to say, or even seem to say, 'Agree with us or else.'"

Unfortunately, that's always been the underlying, totalitarian message of the homosexual movement. The only difference here is that Maryland voters have been warned: public dissent will not be tolerated. Not surprisingly, liberals are racing to cover up Gallaudet's mess, insisting that they believe in free speech as much as the next guy. Tell that to the wedding cake bakers, the T-shirt makers, the bed and breakfast owners, the military chaplains, the high school teachers, the restaurant owners, the photographers, the churches, the Massachusetts parents, and others who were fired, sued, harassed, fined, and suspended. Like Angela, their biggest crime was having an opinion contrary to the radical Left--something one former FRCer knows a lot about.

When Teresa Wagner left Family Research Council, she had plenty of offers to join university faculties and teach law. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Wagner joined the staff as a part-time associate director of its legal writing program. She also applied to be a full-time teacher at the law school, but her application was mysterious denied. It wasn't for lack of experience, since Teresa was the most qualified candidate. Nor was it for lack of legal expertise, since the person offered the position "had never practiced law, had no legal publications, and had no prior successful teaching experience." Teresa will try to prove as much in federal court, where her appeal kicks off today. Although people have sued for discrimination in hiring decisions, experts say Teresa's case is the first of its kind. Unlike other plaintiffs, she has evidence. Like Angela McCaskill, Teresa Wagner belongs at the University. Until then, both women are giving students a serious education in political bias. PORTLAND, Oregon -- Portland police release video of an ASL interpreter Occupy Portland protester injured during camp eviction. Justin James Bridges, a local musician and American Sign Language translator for Occupy Portland, was allegedly assaulted by the police during the camp clean out on Sunday afternoon.

Many Portlanders know Bridges well, as he performs at hemp festivals, freedom rallies and has been a fixture at Occupy Portland since the beginning. His story does not jive with that of the Portland Police Bureau news release.
