How ASL Innovators Brings Music To The Deaf

A growing number of ASL interpreters are bringing visuals to a hearing-centric musical world.

Amber Galloway Gallego is one of a growing number of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters who specialize in the performing arts. If you frequent music festivals and concerts, you might see her -- or an interpreter like her -- grooving to the music, mirroring the emotions and physicality of the artists onstage, interpreting their imaginative lyrics for concert-goers who rely on visual accommodations. She’s interpreted for more than 400 artists at this point, and has a special knack for interpreting hip-hop acts.

You might have seen this viral video floating around of her signing alongside Kendrick Lamar’s live performance at Lollapalooza. For the hearing audience, watching Amber is captivating and fascinating; for the Deaf community, it’s vital.

In the video above, Amber breaks apart the challenges of interpreting a hearing-centric music world into a visual one and explains some clever ways she has visualized some rather complex lyrics.

She also has her own YouTube channel, https://youtube.com/1stopforasl

Deaf Couples Wedding ASL Song 'Chicken Fried'

WATCH [CC] - Song 'Chicken Fried' in American Sign Language for Deaf couples wedding video going viral on social media in Deaf community.

American Sign Language entertainer, Brian Guendling would like to congratulate Alejandro and Nicole on a beautiful wedding. Guendling was the guest entertainers for the night as performed a 3 song performance. Just because Alejandro and Nicole are Deaf, he believe they can enjoy music just like everybody else in a very entertaining way. He met with the family before the wedding and the bride mentioned how it was a country themed wedding.

Most of you know, Brian Guendling was born and raised in San Diego his whole life so he had to go out and buy his first pair of cowboy boots and a country hat, and couples picked the songs they wanted him to perform. He would like to thank Rob Rowland And Blue Lens Productions for another fantastic video with subtitles.

Guendling have teamed up with his Deaf friend by the name of DC Davis. DC was born and raised in Waco, Texas. He turned Deaf at the age of 2 due to high fever that burst both eardrums. He’s known sign language all his life and loves sports. He comes from a family that was involved with music especially in church. He started signing songs in his church when he was younger and its been his favorite thing to do since then.

DC memorizes music a little differently than most people do. He feels the beat and reads the lyrics off a paper over and over. Just because he’s Deaf, he still can enjoy music just like everybody else. He moved to Austin in 1999 with his family where he was a 3 sport athlete at Texas School for the Deaf. He played basketball, football, and ran track.

They want to show their audiences that the Deaf and Hearing cultures can work together. As you all know, The last sign language video, Guendling posted was 6 months ago. In the last 6 months he received a lot of messages from people asking if he was still continuing the sign language. Guendling felt like if he wanted to continue this passion of his needed to get his fluency up and get a lot more educated.

Guendling ever took was his senior year of high school which was 4 years ago. All the sign language he learned was from associating himself around Deaf Culture and hanging out with many of his Deaf friends. So he decided it was time to take it to the next level.

Guendling acquired many Deaf friends to sit down and help him with his fluency. After 4 months he had learned a lot. But, Guendling decided he needed to meet with a professional. He decided to move back to San Diego for 5 weeks where he met with a very highly professional American Sign Language coach by the name of Rebecca Coleman.

Rebecca has been teaching ASL for more then 10 years and absolutely changed his signing game. Video 3 will be posted next week!! Stay tuned! Thanks!

This Is How You Make An All Deaf Music Video

WATCH [CC] - They may not be able to hear, but Deaf people still take great pleasure from music.

The Daily Beast - As Justin Jones entered a Rockaway-bound subway train on Tuesday night, there was an unusually vibrant scene: as a speaker blared the heavy beats to one of summer’s catchiest pop songs, a group of teens and young adults danced, laughed and sang--or rather, signed--their hearts out.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

This enthusiastic group wasn’t disrupting the daily commutes of New York residents to raise money. The actors, who were mostly Deaf, were helping a young girl become comfortable with who she was.

A camera panned each of their faces. The director yelled, “Cut!”

Justin was standing on the platform of a once-abandoned station in Downtown Brooklyn that had been converted into the New York Transit Museum in 1976 while simultaneously offering a filming location for Hollywood blockbusters.

On Tuesday, the 1960s-era car served as the set for the Deaf Professional Arts Network’s (D-PAN) as a visit to the set of the Deaf Professional Arts Network’s latest music video shows.

The cast of Spring Awakening, which is returning to Broadway with the help of Deaf West Theater--who produce their shows in American Sign Language (ASL) translated the lyrics of Walk the Moon’s “Different Colors” for viewers who have lost the ability to hear.

“Deaf people feel music. They just don’t get the whole experience,” Joel Martin, the co-founder of D-PAN, told The Daily Beast. “What we are doing is turning it into something that is accessible... Read The Full Story.
