Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Faces Congress

WATCH [CC] - United States lawmakers demand changes at Facebook after data breaches, why you keep using Facebook, even if you hate it.

WASHINGTON -- Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg called his billion users "dumb fucks" for trusting him with their data, giving up privacy.

Facebook is desperately trying to mend its damaged reputation following the continued fallout of a massive data scandal.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Alongside London-based elections consultancy Cambridge Analytica, the social media giant is at the center of an ongoing dispute over the alleged harvesting and use of personal data. The allegations have heightened concerns over whether such data was then used to try and influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the Brexit vote.

Ahead of Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's appearance on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, CNBC takes a look at exactly how the tech behemoth ended up in the midst of a media firestorm... Read more at Facebook-Cambridge Analytica: A timeline of the data hijacking scandal.

Vox: What happened with Cambridge Analytica highlights this perfectly.

Before many people join a network, it may not be so useful. But the more people join, the more useful it becomes. That’s the network effect. Facebook is a step beyond that - it’s the network effect on steroids.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

This is what makes facebook so great - it knows everything about you! - and what makes facebook so awful - IT KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU. And while its network of 2.13 billion monthly users doesn’t pay any money to use the core service, Facebook makes plenty of money - millions daily - (buy providing advertisers access to that user data). And everyone on the site agreed to this when they signed up.

How to see if Cambridge Analytica got your Facebook information: Facebook is now alerting users if their data was improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica. If your worried if your private data, including your public Facebook profile were shared, you can check easily. HERE's HOW.

How ASL Innovators Brings Music To The Deaf

A growing number of ASL interpreters are bringing visuals to a hearing-centric musical world.

Amber Galloway Gallego is one of a growing number of American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters who specialize in the performing arts. If you frequent music festivals and concerts, you might see her -- or an interpreter like her -- grooving to the music, mirroring the emotions and physicality of the artists onstage, interpreting their imaginative lyrics for concert-goers who rely on visual accommodations. She’s interpreted for more than 400 artists at this point, and has a special knack for interpreting hip-hop acts.

You might have seen this viral video floating around of her signing alongside Kendrick Lamar’s live performance at Lollapalooza. For the hearing audience, watching Amber is captivating and fascinating; for the Deaf community, it’s vital.

In the video above, Amber breaks apart the challenges of interpreting a hearing-centric music world into a visual one and explains some clever ways she has visualized some rather complex lyrics.

Donald Trump's Refugee Ban, Explained

Vox explains why Donald Trump's refugee ban in the US.

WASHINGTON, DC -- On Friday, President Donald J. Trump overhauled US refugee policy - laying the groundwork for a fundamental shift in how the US allows people to enter the country.

Trump signed an executive order Friday afternoon that bans all immigrants and visa holders from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US for 90 days, and opens the door to more country-based bans in future.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

It also bans all refugee admissions for 120 days - and bans Syrian refugees indefinitely. It slashes the US’s refugee quota for 2017 to less than half of the level set by President Obama, directs the US to prioritize “religious minorities” for the remaining slots, and bars all refugees from countries that aren’t specifically approved by the US government.

And it tasks the federal government with coming up with a new process to screen everyone hoping to immigrate to the US, one that requires each individual immigrant to prove she or he would be a “positively contributing member of society.”

Legal challenges to the order have already begun, and the Trump Administration and Department of Homeland Security have already begun scaling back the order's gigantic scope to allow Green Card holders from the 7 countries into the US.

America’s Creepy Clown Craze, Explained

Clown sighting pranks have happened since the 1980s - but never quite like this in America.

The professional clowning community has a serious image problem in America. In recent weeks, stories of so-called “creepy clowns” and “killer clowns” have been popping up all over local newscasts across the country and disseminated through social media. While parents and educators express concern for the safety of children, the ones in real danger may be the clowns themselves.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

In 2016, anyone who dares to leave the house dressed as a clown may become the victim of a vigilante or even an angry mob. Vox attempts to sort through the madness in an informative seven-minute mini-documentary called “America’s Creepy Clown Craze, Explained.” Produced and narrated by Christophe Haubursin, the video not only explores the current wave of clown-related pranks but also the longstanding historical roots behind the current, widespread anti-clown sentiments.

Some may assume that the public’s fear of clowns, or coulrophobia, began with John Wayne Gacy, the Illinois serial killer who performed at charity events and children’s parties in the guise of “Pogo The Clown.” But Haubursin traces the problem back to the 19th century, when a man named Joseph Grimaldi was “the most popular entertainer in England.” Grimaldi’s costuming and makeup set the precedent for modern day clowns, but his private life was marred by depression and alcoholism. Writer Charles Dickens immortalized Grimaldi’s private struggles, first by editing his memoirs, then by including a “disturbed clown character” based on Grimaldi in his 1837 novel The Pickwick Papers. That changed the public’s perception of clowns in general.

Today, there are few positive clown role models in popular culture. The two jesters best known to the public are Batman’s murderous nemesis, Joker, and The Simpsons’ “morally, financially, and physically bankrupt” Krusty The Clown. It’s gotten so bad for clowns out there that some are being arrested for “disorderly conduct” simply for wearing their work clothes in public places. Organizations like the World Clown Association may try to redeem the art form, but the damage may be irreparable.

Gallaudet How Architecture Changes For The Deaf

WATCH [CC] - Curbed's feature on DeafSpace at Gallaudet University campus for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and staff.

WASHINGTON -- We live in a world made for people who hear. But what would our cities looks like if they were designed for the Deaf? DeafSpace is an emerging approach to design and architecture that is informed by the unique sensory experience of those who don't hear. In conjunction with Curbed's feature on DeafSpace, we visited Gallaudet University to see what DeafSpace looks like in action:

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

People who hear might not realize what role sound plays in everyday life. If you want a passerby's attention, you shout his name. If a professor needs to explain a math problem, it's not a problem to talk while writing concepts on the board.

But people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing depend on different senses to navigate everything from social interactions to academics. The concept of DeafSpace uses that experience to inform the design of environments.

Gallaudet University - a school located in Washington, DC, and the world’s only institution of higher education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is in the process of modifying the historic university’s campus to create a more inclusive environment for the Deaf student body.

Hansel Bauman, the architect behind DeafSpace, has redesigned parts of Gallaudet's campus around five basic principles: space and proximity, sensory reach, mobility and proximity, light and color, and acoustics. DeafSpace is the project that has grown up around Bauman's work and is quickly gaining recognition both inside and outside deaf communities.

On our recent visit to the campus we sat down with Derrick Behm, a former student who now works in the Office of Campus Design and Planning. He walked us through some of the background of the DeafSpace project while also giving us a demonstration of how these concepts play out in action, which you can see in the video above.

For a more in-depth look into the history, traditions, and design elements driving DeafSpace, read Amanda Hurley's feature about DeafSpace on our sister site Curbed.
