Deaf American Learns Japanese Sign Language

Deaf American who uses ASL learns Japanese Sign Language.

A Deaf activist and Youtuber, Rikki Poynter, a Deaf American who uses American Sign Language (ASL) learns Japanese Sign Language (JSL), she would like to sharing and educating Deaf and Hearing people about Deaf Japanese culture.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Giving someone 'middle finger' in Japanese Sign Language doesn't mean what you think it does. The seemingly rude gesture is just a normal word when you put it into context but can you guess what it means? It might seem like a rude gesture to us but giving someone 'the finger' simply means 'brother' when you put it into the context of Japanese Sign Language.

However, while the middle finger might not actually mean something as crude as it does in American or English culture, many Japanese people are now more than aware of the double meaning after the gesture has emerged in films.

Check it out at This Is Not 'F**k You' In Japanese Sign Language.

“Ready to Be Heard” is the story of Amanda McDonough, who was diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of 4. As she grew older, her hearing steadily declined as she battled to hide her ongoing hearing loss from her family, friends, teachers, and the world. Despite facing unbelievable challenges, she succeeded in; getting straight A’s in school, having a successful child acting career, and leading a fairly “normal” life. But one day, during the most difficult part of her college career, she awoke to discover that her remaining hearing was completely gone. She had lost 100% of her hearing in both ears. All of a sudden, she was unable to communicate with the people around her. She did not know sign language, could no longer speak well, and could not lip read. She became isolated from the world and had to finally face her hearing loss, accept that she was deaf, and find a way to finish college without being able to hear. She found the strength to teach herself to talk well again, to lip-read, and to use sign language. As she was leaning new communication skills, she also graduated from college and set out on an emotional rollercoaster ride to discover who she was and who she wanted to become. Join her on her journey to find a balance between the hearing world she was raised in and the Deaf culture she now belonged to. This is a story about overcoming obstacles, finding yourself, and making your mark on the world... visit at http://readytobeheard.com.

The World's First Public Deaf School in France

Deaf History: The world's first public Deaf school: Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris.

After the death of Père Vanin in 1759, the Abbé de l'Épée was introduced to two Deaf girls who were in need of a new instructor.

The school began in 1760 and shortly after that was opened to the public and became the world's first free school for the Deaf. It was originally located in a house at 14 rue des Moulins, butte Saint-Roch, near the Louvre in Paris.

On July 29, 1791, the French legislature approved government funding for the school and it was renamed: "Institution Nationale des Sourds-Muets à Paris."

The Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris, has an incredible timeline that reveals the parallel history of Deaf and Hearing successes such as in establishing a school, obtaining a red badge--highest honor badge--while the other hearing people succeed in war, goes on in the same time-line.

It's an awesome idea. I think every Deaf school should do the same thing!
