Albania TV Show Interview With Deaf Model

Rudina: Maria Taragjini represented Albania in Miss & Mister Deaf 2019.

TIRANA, Albania -- A beautiful and gorgeous 21-year-old Maria Taragjini is a Deaf woman with different abilities who does not speak or listen. But that has not stopped her from pursuing her dream. Maria represented Albania in the Miss and Mister Deaf 2019 competition that took place in Italy, ranking 5th.

Maria was invited today on the show "Rudina" on TV Klan to tell us more about this beautiful experience. Accompanied by her friend Loretta, who helps us communicate in sign language, Maria is currently a sophomore at the University of the Arts in the Department of Sculpture and Painting.

She has been living away from her family since coming to Tirana at the age of five to study at the school for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. While her family still lives in Kodovjat village of Gramsh.

Representing Albania was a dream come true and ranking in fifth place was a great achievement, even though it says competition was strong.

“I competed with 5 outfits; in a red dress, in a black dress, in something fashionable, in bathing suits and in a red dress. The race was strong, lots of beautiful girls, lots of competition. I did not find it difficult, I felt safe after being helped by people in the field. Fulfilled the dream I had when I was little, I learned how to walk in the backyard, to be beautiful. Fulfilling the dream is something very big."

Marias says she likes to change her appearance often. “I like myself more blonde than brunettes. I love the change of appearance. My hair was blue. I really want to explore with myself."

Prejudice is another aspect Marian has often associated with throughout her life. In this beauty contest, messages were given that these young people would not be seen with a different eye. And this is what Mary seeks to say. Maria's message is, "Don't prejudge, but help, we're like you."

Sean Markel, the chairperson for the Deaf Grassroots Movement Rally on March 8th, 2018. We will be marching from Gallaudet University starting at 1030am all the way to here, at the United States Capitol, there will be a platform, with microphones and ASL interpreters. There will be chairs provided for the rally attendees as well.

As of today, Markel have put together a total of 14 presenters including 3 Senators, he will give information on their names, their positions, pictures for those who will be here to speak, and they will be speaking for up to 10 minutes each. You may ask, what's the rally for? We are Deaf and we are coming here to show the legislators that we exist, to raise awareness about the struggles we face on a daily basis in our lives, such as communication accessibility, education, and jobs, employment.

He have spoken with several legislators, the U.S. Capitol Police, and we have discussed the rally. Now, there are rules for the rally, you can bring signs, but you cannot have wood sticks for the signs, its illegal, be proud, be friendly, enjoy the occasion so we can show our Deaf spirit.

Just walk, stay calm, be courteous when you're here at U.S. Capitol, the legislators are willing to listen to your message, it's really important that we educate them, for years and years, the Deaf community has been complaining about a lot of things and it's time that we come and let them know.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has been working hard for years too, we need to show gratitude and thank them for their advocacy on our behalf. They have accomplished in some improvements, but for other issues, it continues to be a struggle and this is why we must all come together and rally.

The Senators and Representatives will listen, in the long term it will be good for us, to raise issues such as defending our rights, stop oppressive tactics, and remove misconceptions about Deaf people.

DGM and NAD are working together on legislative training on March 7th, NAD will be providing the training and Gallaudet University will give us a meeting room. He is working on getting State Associations and DGM State Representatives to come, up to 100 people, the training will be all day and then the next day on March 8th on Thursday, after the program at the rally, about 2 hours, the State Associations and DGM State Representatives will go see their Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Capitol.

Those who are interested to attend the legislative training, please let Wesley Arey know. For those who are in State Associations, please contact NAD President, Melissa Draganac-Hawk. In the long term, the Senators and Representatives will appreciate our initiative to raise awareness about our issues, especially in Communication Accessibility, Education, and Employment. Please save the date, come to support the root cause of the Rally, US, the Deaf Americans! See you all there on March 8, 2018.

We're still facing inequality access of opportunities as hearing people does. We will not fight as individuals. We will fight as a team to make a change.

Theater Cancels Until Deaf Actor Found For Role

Troupe seeks to collaborate with the Iowa Deaf community to create authentic portrayals.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Gazette: The Deaf Community has spoken, and Theatre Cedar Rapids has listened.

The community theater is postponing its production of “Tribes,” after two weeks of rehearsals and protests over casting hearing actors in the roles of two Deaf characters.

In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Leslie Charipar, the theater’s artistic director said: “In light of conversation among and feedback from the Deaf community and after a great deal of conversation and soul-searching with TCR staff, Tribes director David Schneider, and the cast of Tribes, TCR has decided to postpone our production of Tribes until we can gain the support of the Deaf community and collaborate with them in finding Deaf actors to play the Deaf roles as well as ensure that we are portraying the Deaf experience in an authentic and respectful way.”

New production dates haven’t been chosen yet.

“It might be possible that it’s next year,” said Casey Prince, TCR’s executive director. “What we’re most excited about is quickly getting people plugged into the production.”

TCR will contact ticketholders; information also is posted on the theater’s website.

Those options could include workshops to promote education and understanding between the Hearing and Deaf communities, from sign language and culture to theater studies.

“This postponement is our sincere and earnest way to meet our mission of serving the entire community and specifically to do right by the Deaf community as we share their stories in an authentic and collaborative way,” Charipar said.

The message spread on social media as swiftly as the protests posted the past two weeks.

“WOW! Thank you, TCR for listening to the Deaf community,” wrote Carly Armour of Iowa City, who helped initiate the early discussions on Facebook and spoke passionately - using American Sign Language and her voice - during a public forum Tuesday afternoon in Cedar Rapids. “This decision will not only bridge the gap between the theater and Deaf communities but also create a STRONG partnership for years to come. Thank you to our community - Deaf and Hearing allies - for coming together to make this change!”

“We will work together to help and heal,” wrote Robert Vizzini of Cedar Rapids, chairman of the Cedar Rapids Association of the Deaf, reiterating what he said at the forum.

Prince, who attended that event, made good on his promise to take their comments back to his team, continuing a discussion already underway at the theater.

“We’ll regroup,” he said, “(and) get feedback from those who want to participate going forward.”

The cast’s reaction was “very emotional,” he said. “They were very invested in the piece for their own personal reasons. The story, the material really resonated with them. In light of the public nature of this conversation that’s been playing out, they connected with each other over a short two weeks in a way that some casts never do over multiple months. I’m certainly sad for those who are sad, but I’m very happy that they found each other and grew through the material with the limited time that they did.”

“I hope this proves to you that we were listening and silently observing,” cast member Mindy Oberreuter said via Facebook, where much of the controversy played out. “I truly hope both sides can move forward in collaboration. The very heart of theater is telling a story, and we want to tell it honestly and correctly. We all love theater that is why we are a part of this group. ... I wish you all could have seen our rehearsal on Monday night. I don’t know if the universe was telling us something, but it was beautiful. We rehearsed the second act and if you are familiar with the show’s end, you know how emotional and raw it is. It ends with love and tears and hugs.”

Deaf Actors Plays 'Fiddler on the Roof'

WATCH [CC] - Lyric Theatre's "Fiddler on the Roof" Incorporates American Sign Language, Deaf and Hearing Actors.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Over half a century after its premiere on Broadway, the songs of Fiddler on the Roof are known around the world. From joyous “If I Were a Rich Man” to haunting “Sunrise, Sunset,” the musical focuses on the story of a Jewish milkman and his family’s troubles in rural Russia at the turn of the 20th century.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

While the show certainly has its lighthearted moments, Fiddler on the Roof is, at its core, about the importance of family and tradition and the tensions surrounding them.

That is something Michael Baron could relate to when he took on directing duties for Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma’s production of the musical, which runs July 26-30 at Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N. Walker Ave.

“As a Jewish musical theater director, Fiddler on the Roof has always been high on my bucket list of shows to direct,” Baron said. “It’s a show I’ve seen countless times and whose music has been played at almost every Jewish wedding and bar mitzvah I’ve attended, including my own.”

That notability can be seen as both a benefit and a detriment. At this point, Fiddler on the Roof is essentially synonymous with musical theater.

Between being one of the most-performed high school musicals and having multiple Broadway productions and a film adaptation, Fiddler has become difficult to ignore.

For this reason, audiences have likely seen it in one form or another, making it continuously harder to make the material fresh again.

But in an interesting twist, Lyric Theatre’s version incorporates American Sign Language and two Deaf actors portray love-struck characters Hodel and Perchik.

Two interpreters will be incorporated onstage to fully communicate to Deaf viewers.

New opportunities: Baron planned on utilizing the performers after discussing it with a friend, Deaf actor Christopher Tester.

After brainstorming how it might be possible and what Lyric would need to provide to make it happen, Baron said it seemed like a wonderful opportunity to showcase an underrepresented community.

“Our goal is to create a new village for Fiddler that is accessible to both hearing and Deaf patrons,” he said. “I hope this collaboration reveals new insights by bringing hearing and Deaf actors to the Lyric stage for the first time.”

And it certainly helps when performers are as passionate and talented as Sandra Mae Frank.

“I didn’t want to be an actress at first because it’s already tough enough to be an actor alone, but to be a Deaf actress?” she said. “I just did it anyway by taking the risk and moving forward with theater because I eat, breathe and dream it. It’s my life. It’s who I am.”

Frank, who became Deaf due to an unknown cause at the age of 3, doesn’t want to work in theater simply because it’s her passion.

She also wants to use it as a tool for educating others.

“Everyone has their own struggles in their own ways, but for me, as a Deaf actress, I also have to be an advocate and teach others about my culture,” she said.

Frank uses ASL as her main form of communication, which comes with its own set of challenges.

“It gets hard once in a while being vulnerable and bringing my culture to the public, but it’s also very beautiful letting my culture be a part of the story,” she said. “And depending on what the context is about, it brings more depth to a story by adding a different perspective from a Deaf character than how it’d usually be done if performed by a hearing actor.”

Frank certainly thinks the addition of ASL to the story of Fiddler on the Roof makes perfect sense.

In the musical, Hodel is the intelligent and free-spirited 17-year-old daughter of main character Tevye.

Over the course of the story, she falls in love with Perchik, a scholar and Bolshevik revolutionary who is exiled to Siberia.

“I love that Hodel and Perchik are Deaf, and it makes total sense,” Frank said. “Hodel resisted Perchik at first because of tradition, but to me, adding the deafness to the character gives it more purpose. She’s so hesitant, but she sees this handsome, deaf stranger, and it stirs up these feelings.”

Elaborate plans: With only two weeks from the beginning of rehearsals to opening night, Lyric Theatre hopes to put on one of the biggest and most ambitious productions of Fiddler on the Roof.

Its actors and production staff have certainly put in the work. Baron notes the planning for the show started nearly a year in advance, coordinating everything from casting across the nation to meetings with the choreographer and music director.

“The process to create this show has many facets,” he said. “From collaborating with scenic, costume, lighting, props and sound designers to create a wholly original production based on Jewish folk art built here in Oklahoma, consulting experts like Rabbi Vered Harris of Temple B’nai Israel, and so much more.”

But even with flashy musical numbers and elaborate sets, Frank and Baron agree the heart of the show lies in the more restrained and emotional moments.

“Fiddler is about the sometimes difficult balance between tradition, religion and family, which is always something audiences can relate to,” Baron said. “The fact that it uses such moving music that evokes emotion from the actors and audience makes it a special evening of theater always worth revisiting.”

Frank echoed that sentiment and said she hopes audiences leave the show filled with a new appreciation for the musical.

“I hope they feel a sense of joy and that no matter where you are in life or what defines you, family is where your home is and where you’ll find love,” she said.

Deaflympics Begin In Samsun Despite Turkey's Failed Military Coup Attempt

WATCH: World Deaf Championships begin in Samsun despite Turkey's failed military coup attempt: ICSD President Valery Rukhledev says.

SAMSUN, TURKEY -- The 2016 World Deaf Championships are going ahead as planned at Samsun’s Batıpark despite the recent failed military coup in Turkey.

The week-long Championships, which are due to conclude on Sunday (July 24), are serving as preparation for the 2017 Deaflympics in the Turkish city.

They begun just three days after members of Turkish Armed Forces unsuccessfully attempted to seize control of several key places in cities such as Ankara and Istanbul.

It ended after forces loyal to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan maintained social order within 48 hours.

The Government says 312 people were killed in the coup, including 145 civilians, 60 police, three soldiers and 104 plotters.

International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) President Valery Rukhledev, who attended the Opening Ceremony of the World Deaf Championships, described the military coup as "deeply shocking".

"ICSD strongly condemns it as barbaric and cowardly act," he said.

"This is not only attack on the Government of Turkey, on humanity but on all humanitarian and Olympic values.

"ICSD stands united with the Turkish people and people from around the globe.

"Our thoughts and prayers with the families of those who have been killed and wounded.

"This is a heartbreaking situation."

Rukhledev was joined at the Opening Ceremony by Turkey's Minister of Youth and Sports Akif Çağatay Kılıç, who led the "365 days countdown ceremony" for next year’s Deaflympics, scheduled to be held from July 18 to 30.

Kılıç started the countdown signboard at the Republic Square via live broadcast.

"We are happy to host you all," he said.

"I don’t doubt that Samsun will organise two excellent events.

"We will reunite next year for the 2017 Deaflympics."

The World Deaf Championships are made up of five sports including beach volleyball, judo, karate, table tennis and taekwondo.

As part of their visit, team delegations were given detailed information about sport complexes and ongoing operations for next year’s Deaflympics.

"Deaflympics 2017 in Samsun will be our common success," added Rukhledev.

Deaf Drag Queen Dazzles DeafNation World Expo

Deaf drag queen dazzles the audiences of DeafNation World Expo in the sin city of Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, NV -- KTNV Channel 13: When you come to Las Vegas, when you dance on the Strip, the music is almost all you hear.

One performer takes to the stage in high heels and a tiara hearing absolutely nothing. Jolene is a drag queen who lives in Las Vegas. She is also fully Deaf. She may not speak, but she is not quiet.

"A lot of people can't believe that a Deaf person can do it," said Jolene, through an American Sign Language interpreter.

She's been doing drag for three years and has never met another Deaf drag queen. This may not be the job that pays the bills, but she loves signing songs and apparently crowds love it too.

"Oh yeah, people are really surprised, people are really shocked. People announce that I'm Deaf and it shows; people clap like this they say yay!" said Jolene.

When she's performing, she follows a screen and feels the vibrations of the music with the help of a hearing aid.

Even though she's one of many performers in Las Vegas for the Deaf Nation World Expo she stands out, and a few inches taller, than the rest.

You can catch one of her weekend shows at Charlie's Las Vegas on Arville Street.

Deaf Foam Festival “Will Be Too Noisy” UK Police:

Deaf News: Fears that three-day Deaf Festival “will be too noisy” at Eggington, United Kingdom, claims the UK police.

EGGINGTON, UK -- Police are objecting to a licence for a three-day festival likely to attract at least 500 Deaf people from across the United Kingdom because they fear the event will be too noisy.

The England Deaf Party wants The Deaf Foam Festival to take place on July 8-10 at Stockwell Farm, Leighton Road, Eggington, with entertainment running through until 4am. Despite not yet having a licence its website says certain ticket types are sold out or nearly sold out.

Beds Police licensing officer PC Liam Mitchell has told Central Beds Council that the event’s website and social media pages made reference to ‘Live Music, All Night Long’. “This is despite regulated entertainment not being requested on the application,” he said.

“Such music is likely to result in a repeat of the noise nuisance seen by the residents of Eggington during the event in 2014 [The Illusive Fest].”

He pointed out that the Illusive Fest at the same site attacted around 1,500 people, resulted in multiple arrests for drug offences, assault, criminal damage and a serious road traffic collision. Villagers from Eggington also complained of excessive noise.

Pc Mitchell said: “The previous festival at the site in question in 2014 demonstrated the impact on crime, disorder, public safety and nuisance that a well-planned event at this location generated.”

He described the planning for the Deaf Foam Festival as “worrying limited”. He added: “On speaking to the applicant via email, no public safety risk assessments appear to be in place. A review of the organiser’s website, Twitter, and Facebook pages raise further concerns about how the event is being managed...
