‘Piglet’ The Deaf Blind Pink Puppy

Deaf, Blind and pink puppy named ‘Piglet’ inspires with his resilience.

WESTPORT, Connecticut -- Piglet, the Deaf Blind pink puppy was rescued from a hoarding situation in Georgia, USA along with his mother and 3 litter mates. He is a Dachshund and Chihuahua mix, and the product of two dapple colored parents. Dapple to dapple breeding results in a 25% chance of each puppy being “double dapple”. This double dapple color pattern is linked to congenital ear and eye defects that may result in partially or completely Deaf/Blind puppies.

NBC News: Veterinarian Melissa Shapiro rescued Piglet when he was just one pound and never gave up on him. Piglet became a viral sensation as she documented the tiny dog’s milestones on social media. A third-grade teacher saw the posts and felt so inspired that she invited Piglet to show her students the importance of perseverance.

Deaf/Blind Teen Brutally Beaten By TSA Agents

TSA sued for brutal beating Deaf, partially blind teen girl recovering from brain surgery at Memphis Airport.

MEMPHIS, TN -- A teen just released from brain surgery was beaten by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents inside the Memphis International Airport last year, a recent lawsuit alleges.

The TSA is listed as a defendant in a suit accusing them of injuring a mentally disabled teen after she was unable to understand or comply with orders at a security checkpoint.

Newly surfaced photos show the aftermath of the June 30, 2015 incident, in which agents roughed up 19-year-old Hannah Cohen leaving her bloodied and bruised.

“They wanted to do further scanning; she was reluctant. She didn’t understand what they were about to do,” her mother Shirley Cohen told WREG.

The lawsuit claims before Hannah had brain tumor surgery at St. Jude’s hospital, she already had “a physical and mental impairment that substantially limit one or more of her life activities.”

“More particularly,” the lawsuit continues, “Hannah has damage from radiation and removal of a brain tumor that substantially limits her ability to speak, walk, stand, see, hear, care for herself, learn and work, think, concentrate, and interact with others.”

“This substantial limitation is obvious upon sight and was obvious” on the day of the incident, the lawsuit filed in US District Court states.

“She’s trying to get away from them,” Hannah’s mother described, “but in the next instant, one of them had her down on the ground and hit her head on the floor. And I looked and there’s blood everywhere.”

All the while Shirley was kept from being able to help her daughter, causing her “extreme emotional injury as she watched the personnel assault her daughter,” according to court documents obtained by Infowars.

The Memphis International Airport Police Department is also included as a defendant in the suit for “arresting her for no cause.”

“Hannah was arrested, booked and on the night she should have been celebrating the end of her treatment, she was locked up in Jail East,” reports WREG.

“Here we were with nowhere to go, not even a toothbrush, our bags had gone to Chattanooga,” Shirley said.

TSA did not comment on the case, but referred travelers with special accommodations to call their TSA Cares hotline. The Cohens’ are asking for $100,000 in damages.

Deaf-Blind Families For The Cogswell-Macy Act

Deaf-Blind families for the Cogswell-Macy Act - H.R. 3535.

WASHINGTON D.C. -- On September 17, 2015, a comprehensive BILL to reform the education of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind or Visually Impaired, and Deaf-Blind students was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill was sponsored by Congressman Matt Cartwright (D- PA 17th), with original co-sponsors David McKinley (R-WV 1st), Mark Takano (D-CA 41st), Tony Cardenas (D-CA 29th), Kathy Castor (D-FL 14th), Alan Grayson (D-FL 9th), Michael Honda (D-CA 17th), Jared Huffman (D-CA 2nd), and Tim Ryan (D-OH 13th). H.R. 3535, the Alice Cogswell and Anne Sullivan Macy Act, will amend the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to address the unique needs of these populations. This is truly a historic event, and we should be proud of our efforts to make this happen in the United States.

However, there still is much work to be done. The bill needs to gain the sponsorship of many more House members, and it needs to be introduced in the Senate. Please take a few moments to contact your Congressional members to ask them to sponsor this bill. It is easy to contact them through their web site, and you can use the sample letters. Be sure to tailor them to your particular situation. Cogswell-Macy Act information can be found at http://ceasd.org/child-first/alice-cogswell and http://www.afb.org/info/get-connected/take-action/12

Thanks for all you do to support Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, Visually Impaired, and Deaf-Blind children in the United States.

Deaf-Blind Housing Project In Winnipeg, Canada

Deaf-Blind housing project will be first of its kind in Manitoba, Canada.

WINNIPEG -- 10 suites at Gas Station Arts Centre redevelopment will be designed for Deaf-Blind people. Winnipeg will soon be one of the first cities in Canada to have specialized housing designed for people who are both Deaf and Blind.

Bonnie Heath, executive director of the Resource Centre for Manitobans who are Deaf-Blind, has put down payments on 10 suites in the residential portion of the new Gas Station Arts Centre, which is slated for the corner of River Avenue and Osborne Street.

Watch The Original CBC News With Subtitles

"We're very excited," Heath said, adding that the need for this kind of housing is great.

"The Deaf-Blind individuals that I'm in contact with in their own homes right now feel isolated and unsafe."

She added, "You have a combination of you can't see and you can't hear; you don't know who's coming into your place. You don't know, for example, one of my Deaf-Blind friends said she wouldn't even know the toilet was running over until the water was at her ankles in the dining room."

Heath works with dozens of Manitobans who are Deaf-Blind - people with a combination of no vision or low vision and hearing that rely on interpreters to communicate.

The apartments will not only bring members of the Deaf-Blind community under one roof, the apartments will be designed with them and for them for safer and easier living, said Heath.

"Sharp edges, you know, things that we take for granted when we can see, getting around corners - those types of things will be avoided."

Winnipeg-based architect Steve Cohlmeyer, whose resume includes The Forks, will tackle the project, which he acknowledges will be a first for him.

"At the level of problem-solving, I think it's really exciting - and exciting because there's a whole service aspect and a kind of integration of a whole group I was unaware of when I first got the call," he said.

Some of the features Cohlmeyer is considering is a tactile approach to design - for example, surfaces that will distinguish between rooms.

"For people who have no sight and zero hearing, we'll certainly want to explore the kinds of things you can help feel your way through a space," he said, adding that for people with partial sight, high-contrast spaces may be important.

"Exaggerated colour difference or dark and light contrast will be a helpful thing to have," he said. "So you can see where a door cabinet is against a light floor as opposed to all-white cabinets and all-white floors."

In the coming months, Cohlmeyer will visit Deaf-Blind clients to "watch how they live" to source his design solutions. He said he is also travelling to Toronto and the United States to visit existing Deaf-Blind housing to learn what works well and what doesn't.

"Even when you're well-acquainted with an environment you can still bump into things, so we want to be watching and learning as much as we can about how we facilitate movement and operation of equipment within the unit itself and how they can move again between the unit and even elevators and an outdoor terrace."

Deaf-Blind Woman Surfer Rides California Waves

The incredible moment a Deaf-Blind woman learns to surfing at the beach in California, 'I'm not afraid to get in the water, try something new'

SAN DIEGO, CA -- A 27-year-old Deaf-Blind woman decided to challenge herself this weekend when she learned to surf in San Diego, California.

Haben Girma, who was born Blind and Deaf and is now a disability rights attorney, took to the waves on Saturday at Swami's Beach with help from a surf instructor.

'One of the biggest barriers facing people with disabilities are negative attitudes, people assuming that someone who's blind can't do something, or assuming that someone that uses a wheelchair can't do something, but anything's possible,' Girma, from Berkeley, told CBS 8.

So Girma, the first Blind and Deaf Harvard Law School graduate, has decided to keep challenging herself.

'I've decided to explore the question, 'Can I learn to surf?',' Girma said.

Girma was named a White House Champion of Change and has given a TEDx talk on disability advocacy and public-service lawyers.

Her surf instructor, coach Matt Allen of the Maui Surf Academy, was worried about communication, but they persevered and used physical queues to get their timing in sync.

'It's obviously going to be tough to communicate as well as we normally can,' he told CBS 8. 'There's nothing i'd rather do than help someone's dreams come true.'

Helen Keller's Beloved Climbing Tree Cut Down

Deaf News: Cut down a popular 200-year-old oak tree at the Alabama childhood home of Helen Keller.

TUSCUMBIA, AL -- Section by section, the sprawling water oak plummeted Monday onto the grounds of Ivy Green at the hands of a whirring chainsaw.

Sue Pilkilton, executive director of Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller, watched the tree’s presence in the front yard dwindle.

“Isn’t that the saddest thing?” Pilkilton lamented. “We have tried for years to save that tree.”

Having stood for more than 200 years, the tree had particular significance in Keller’s young life. She enjoyed climbing it as a child, and once became stranded there in the midst of a storm until her teacher, Anne Sullivan, came to her rescue, Pilkilton said.

“Miss Sullivan had to climb up there and get her,” she said.

Members of the board that oversees the historic tourist attraction had no alternative but to order the tree removed. A look inside its trunk revealed why. It was hollowed from years of decay and insect infestation.

In July, part of the tree fell during a storm that packed an EF1 tornado...

Deaf-Blind Man Pushed Onto Rail Tracks

A pair of thugs who pushed a blind and Deaf man and his brother on to train tracks in a 'horrifying assault' at a busy station have both been jailed.

Daniel Webster, 23, and Niall Martin, 24 pushed a 31-year-old, off the platform at Chelmsford station in Essex, then threw his brother Joseph down after him as he tried to intervene.

Martin admitted ABH on the brother and was given a nine-month sentence but he has been freed already after he spent five months in custody, making him eligible for parole. Webster was jailed for 22 months after pleading guilty to GBH and ABH against both brothers.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard that the victim was attacked by Webster and Martin late at night on February 20 this year after the pair came over to ask him about train times.

A row broke out, and Webster launched his attack on the victim, who was described in court as 'profoundly Deaf' and is registered blind.

CCTV footage from the station shows a second man trying to come to the aid of his vulnerable brother, only for both of them to be thrown on to the tracks. As the pair scramble back to the platform edge and attempt to climb back to safety, Martin and Webster punch them both in the head, leaving them stranded. Network rail staff were forced to put a block on all trains coming through the station over fears that the pair could have been killed.

Jailing the pair yesterday Judge David Turner QC said it had been a 'disgraceful episode' and labelled their actions 'manifestly dangerous'. He said: 'This is exactly the sort of thing that terrifies members of the travelling public late at night.'

Speaking afterwards, Detective Constable Alan Reed of British Transport Police said: 'This is one of the most appalling incidents I have investigated. 'Webster and Martin showed a savage disregard for their victims, and one of the brothers is still suffering from the injuries sustained to his foot.

'It is no exaggeration to say the brothers could have been killed after being thrown onto the tracks. 'I would like to pay tribute to the victims, who have shown great dignity following what was a terrifying ordeal for them 'I hope the sentence will provide them with some sense of closure, although in truth, the impact this has had on both of them is likely to remain with them for the rest of their lives.'

The court heard that the victim spent six weeks on crutches and was off work for six months. He now walks with a limp and has been told the foot injury may take two years to heal and may need further surgery.

Federal Bans Housing For Deaf Seniors

The U.S. Federal government builds housing bans for Deaf seniors.

TEMPE, Arizona -- The United States government has three important functions. Collecting taxpayer money, building housing for Deaf seniors and making housing for Deaf seniors illegal.

his is a true story of how the government fulfilled two of its main functions at the same time by building and banning housing for Deaf seniors.

Arizona is defying a federal order to eliminate apartments for Deaf seniors at a housing complex built specifically for the Deaf.

A 2005 federal study found that the U.S. had virtually no affordable housing for the Deaf. So the federal government helped build Apache ASL Trails, a 75-unit apartment building in Tempe, Arizona., designed specifically for the Deaf. Ninety-percent of the units are currently occupied by Deaf and Deaf-Blind seniors.

But now, the federal The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says Apache ASL Trails violates civil rights law because it shows a preference for the hearing-impaired.

HUD is threatening to pull all federal housing aid to Arizona unless it limits the number of hearing-impaired residents to 18 people.

However, when HUD approved and helped fund the project in 2008, it did so knowing that the property was specifically “designed for seniors who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind.”... Read The Fully Story.

$5.75 Million Settlement Awarded to Deaf and Blind Students Sexually Assaulted by Gang at Hawaii Public School.

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- A young girl is forced to perform oral sex on an older boy while he films her with his cell phone camera and students at their school look on, another young girl becomes pregnant after she is raped by a male student at her school, a young boy is sodomized in the bathroom by an older student, but school administrators don’t penalized the perpetrator, another child is sexually assaulted by five boys on campus, and nothing is done to stop them or punish after the fact.

These are not scenarios from an NBC’s Law and Order: Special Victims Unit episode, they are actual events that parents say took place at the Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind, the state’s only public school for children with these disabilities.

For more than a decade, some of the school’s administrators and students covered up a terrible secret young children between 12 and 16 years old were being terrorized - robbed, raped, sodomized and even gang raped on campus and on the school buses – not by employees, but by other children. There are just 80 children enrolled in the school, which is located on the edge of Waikiki, Hawaii’s main tourism hub, and just across the street from the Honolulu Zoo.

One student heading a gang calling themselves the “Ringleaders” orchestrated the attacks, and students were ordered to participate as attackers or retaliated against.

Helen Keller Sunglasses Commercial

Helen Keller Sunglasses under fire for misleading and copyrights.

A Chinese company has grabbed international headlines by naming a line of sunglasses after Deaf-Blind activist Helen Keller.

Is it a smart thing to try and profit off of someone else’s tragedy? One company seems to think so. A Chinese fashion firm, Xiamen Jinzhi, has named a line of its sunglasses Helen Keller.

This is no marketing mistake, or lost in translation. A spokesman for the company, Chen Wenjing, told the Wall Street Journal, they were well aware Keller was blind, but saw merchandising value in her “philanthropist spirit.”

It appears Helen Keller is a famous figure Chinese children learn about in school, according to the article. But maybe the fashion company’s marketing team didn’t pay attention when the course was taught.

On the company’s Helen Keller sunglasses website, someone seems to have picked up a reference about Helen Keller from Wikipedia, “Helen Keller: She was the first Deaf-Blind person... Read The Full Story.
