Family and friends seek justice after Deaf father shot and killed in West Phoenix.

PHOENIX -- Family and friends are asking for justice after a father and member of the Deaf community was shot and killed outside of a Phoenix apartment complex.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

It happened Monday morning near 59th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Family members say 23-year-old Gary Herrera stepped outside for a cigarette break when a car with two men inside pulled up.

Police say a friend heard a gunshot and the car fled. Herrera was taken to an area hospital but died shortly after.

"He was an amazing father," said Angelica Sanchez, who has a 3-year-old son with Herrera.

"Hurt, shocked, I have no words," Jill Quiyo, who says she helped raise Herrera, said.

Loved ones held a car wash on Saturday to raise money for funeral funds.

They're asking for whoever is responsible to come forward and turn themselves into police.

"Whoever has seen something, you know what happened," Quiyo said. "Please speak about it. Please. We need justice for Gary."

Phoenix police say they're looking for an older model four door sedan with faded red paint and two African American men.

They're offering a reward of up to $1,000. If you have information, please call the Phoenix Police Deparmtent or Silent Witness by calling: 480-WITNESS.

Kevin Hall: The First Deaf Player on the PGA Tour

Deaf Sport News: Kevin Hall - PGA Tour’s First Deaf Golfer Prepares For Genesis Open in California.

LOS ANGELES -- CBS2: An extraordinary African-American golfer who is taking the course at the Genesis Open at the Riviera Country Club this week is beating the odds in more ways than one.

Kevin Hall cannot hear his iron hitting the golf ball because he lost his hearing at age 2 1/2. An avid golfer since the age of 9, he has never let his inability to hear get in the way of his golf game.

“Life steps on you sometimes, but life gives you strawberries,” Hall told CBS2 Monday.

“A lot of things in golf, you have to overcome the fear, overcome the obstacles, same thing in life.”

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The first Deaf player on the PGA Tour, Hall is this year’s recipient of the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption, an award given to one outstanding minority golfer. Sifford was the first African-American to play on the PGA Tour. He won the Genesis Open in 1969.

“It’s an honor,” Hall said. “Awesome. A lot of history on this course, Tiger and so many golfers.”

Hall met Tiger Woods in 1999.

“He gave me a little tip how to drive that ball further, and after I hit that ball, he said ’Wow, I’ll see you on tour someday,’” Hall said. “I’m here!”

Hall’s mother Jackie is cheering him on every step of the way.

“I am in awe every time Kevin steps on the course,” Jackie Hall said. “I’m in awe of everything that Kevin does because he does not allow that hearing loss to stop him. He was raised and taught by his dad and I that the sky is the limit. The only limitations you have is what you put on yourself.”

Hall will tee it up against some of the best golfers in the world when the Genesis Open begins Thursday.

Walmart Store Trashed By Mob Of Teenagers

The raw footage of hundreds mob teenagers stormed into and trashed a supermarket Walmart over the weekend in Georgia.

MACON, GA -- Led by a teenage boy throwing gang signs, a mob of vandals descended on a Walmart store in Macon, Georgia early Sunday and trashed the business in a reported attempt to “see how much damage they could cause,” police allege.

During the 1:45 AM ransacking of the Walmart in Macon, rioters pulled a patron from an electric wheelchair and dragged him to the floor, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office report.

A Walmart surveillance camera recorded the vandals racing through store aisles.

Investigators say that a “crowd of 40-50 individuals consisting of black males and females” were led into the store by Kharron Green, 17, who can be seen on surveillance video “presenting gang signs in the air with his hands.”

For about a minute, Green & gangs ran through store aisles “destroying merchandise and vandalizing the property,” cops reported. Upon arriving at the trashed Walmart, a deputy noted that one aisle was “destroyed and coated with broken merchandise” and that the “length of the store from front to rear was lined with items which had been shattered, destroyed, turned over and thrown about.”

Green was arrested at the scene. A Walmart employee interviewed by cops said that he spoke with Green in the store’s parking lot and that the teen “stated that this was a planned event, and that they had planned to see how much damage they could cause.”

A Walmart manager estimated the value of damaged merchandise at $2000.

While Green refused to identify any of his fellow marauders, he told cops that the group “had all come from a party.” Charged with criminal street gang activity, inciting to riot, and criminal damage to property, Green is locked up in the county jail in lieu of $11,200 bond.

Deaf Man is Convicted of Murdering Girlfriend

Deaf Harlem man convicted of fatally stabbing girlfriend 38 times.

NEW YORK CITY -- It took a Manhattan jury less than two hours Friday to convict a Deaf Harlem man of murder for stabbing his Deaf girlfriend 38 times then stuffing her corpse into the bottom of a 55 gallon drum.

After a gruesome month-long trial, jurors deliberated for an hour and half before finding Bismark Lithgow, 26, guilty of killing Francis Pellerano Feb 28 of 2013.

The barrel where the body his girlfriend was found.

Lithgow became increasingly controlling after Pellerano moved into his Harlem apartment he shared with his grandmother, and accused her of cheating, prosecutor Ryan Hayward argued at trial.

As revenge for the perceived betrayal, Lithgow viciously butchered the petite brunette, wrapped her tiny body into a sheet then stuffed it into the bottom of the blue drum.

Pellerano’s corpse festered in his room for two days until his grandmother discovered the drum’s sickening contents.

The defense conceded that Lithgow committed the heinous crime but argued he was in a state of extreme emotional disturbance caused by a frigid mother and brain damage from a childhood illness.

He’s expected to be sentenced April 1st and faces up to life in prison...

Black American Sign Language and American Sign Language Are Different Languages

Sign language that African Americans use is different from that of Whites.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Carolyn McCaskill remembers exactly when she discovered that she couldn’t understand white people. It was 1968, she was 15 years old, and she and nine other Deaf black students had just enrolled in an integrated school for the Deaf in Talledega, Ala.

When the teacher got up to address the class, Angela McCaskill was lost. “I was dumbfounded,” McCaskill recalls through an interpreter. “I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’ ”

The teacher’s quicksilver hand movements looked little like the sign language McCaskill had grown up using at home with her two Deaf siblings and had practiced at the Alabama School for the Negro Deaf and Blind, just a few miles away. It wasn’t a simple matter of people at the new school using unfamiliar vocabularly; they made hand movements for everyday words that looked foreign to McCaskill and her fellow black students.

So, McCaskill says, “I put my signs aside.” She learned entirely new signs for such common nouns as “shoe” and “school.” She began to communicate words such as “why” and “don’t know” with one hand instead of two as she and her black friends had always done. She copied the white students who lowered their hands to make the signs for “what for” and “know” closer to their chins than to their foreheads. And she imitated the way white students mouthed words at the same time as they made manual signs for them... Read The Full Story on Washington Post.

Deaf Black Teens Beaten By Cops During Stop

Deaf black students say they were manhandled by police.

BELLEVILLE, New Jersey -- The East Coast's Stop and Frisk law allowed New Jersey cops to stop a group of deaf black teenagers and harass them. A group of deaf men, on summer vacation from a Trenton trade school for the hearing-impaired, said they were stopped and manhandled by cops in New Jersey.

20 year old Isiah Isaac used “sign language” to tell the story to PIX 11 through his mother and brother. “It was six cars that surrounded them,” Isaac’s mother, Frances, said—as she followed his sign language in the family living room. “He said all the cop cars came over and blocked them in.”

17 year old Domonique Isaac - Isiah’s brother - said he was the only one of six, young men in the car who could hear. The driver, he said, was Deaf - and got out of the car to fetch his l icense from a bag in the trunk. Isaac said, “The passenger (in the front) tried to get out and explain to the officer that he’s Deaf.

The driver ended up on the other side of the car and they slammed him in the passenger’s seat. When he slammed him in, that’s when I tried telling him, ‘He’s Deaf, he’s DEAF.’” ... Read The Full Story.
