Deaf Romance Short Film 'Noise'

A Deaf woman forms a bond with a stranger, forcing them to communicate without language.

Omeleto release a romance short film “Noise” presenting Sophie stands by herself staring at the ocean. Lost in her own world and thoughts - as well as being Deaf - she is oblivious at first to the stranger who begins to share her spot on the pier, trying to photograph the local scene.

Eventually they strike up a conversation via hand gestures and facial expressions, and Sophie and Bemo spend the afternoon together, forming an unlikely bond that flourishes despite their lack of shared language. But that growing bond and attraction is challenged in its own way, and what seems like a straightforward romance becomes a meditation on attraction, love and the vivid, fleeting nature of it all.

Writer-director Michael Aloyan's short romance traces the beginning of an attraction, beginning with the requisite "meet cute" and proceeding until what's traditionally regarded as the next step. Charming, simply but beautifully shot and well-performed, watching two different individuals find common ground and then attraction is lovely, especially when the storytelling highlights how their lack of shared language seemingly makes space for a more intimate, vulnerable connection.

There isn't much dialogue in the film, but strong sound design offers a glimpse of what's it like to be in Sophie's head, experiencing music as rhythmic thumps and exploring a subjectivity that is rich in sensation, even if she can't hear sound. Sharing some of that with Bemo forms one of the most evocative and heart-warming moments in the film, and it's easy to see why they become so taken with one another.

Actress T.J. Carpio plays Sophie's hearing impairment lightly, but traces her growing openness to Bemo with great responsiveness and emotional honesty. Actor Shvan Aladdin plays off her well as Bemo, essaying a role notable for its warmth and kindness, and the two's connection flourishes, even if they don't seem to have much shared ground yet.

As Sophie and Bemo develop other ways to share their selves and lives outside of spoken conversation, the film seems to function as a romantic montage leading to a high point of consummation, gracefully threading through their growing intimacy in a series of beautifully etched vignettes. But in a subtle but clever set of twists, the storytelling upends those narrative expectations, making what seems like a straightforward romance into something unexpectedly meditative and even melancholy.

Without giving too much away, "Noise" seems to question just what the origin of attraction is, what role and importance common ground -- whether it's through shared language or other values -- plays in love and what do we gain or give up when rushing into romance. This narrative turn is gently accomplished without melodrama, but it's enough that when the would-be couple come back together, the emotional tenor of the story is markedly different from the beginning. It's not unlike real life, perhaps, when the beautiful "castle in the sky" created by two people's mutual romantic fantasy and momentum reveals itself as the fragile edifice it is -- and the couple must decide what's really holding it up, and whether that's enough to sustain it.

Short Film: Are You Lost In The World Like Me?

Moby's Grim's smartphone addiction - Steve Cutts' animation highlights The Void Pacific Choir's "Are You Lost In The World Like Me?"

Moby and the Void Pacific Choir paint a grim portrait of the smartphone-obsessed masses in the video for "Are You Lost In The World Like Me?" featuring old school Max Fleischer-inspired animation courtesy of Steve Cutts.

In the video for the "These Systems Are Failing" cut, mindless cellphone-addicted junkies post selfies, send emojis, hunt for Pikachu or swipe right through human interactions, completely oblivious to the reality around them.

"A few years ago I saw Steve Cutts' ‘Man’ video and was amazed and blown away," Moby said of the video in a statement. "I did some internet sleuthing and found his e-mail address and humbly asked him to make a video for me. And, lucky me, he agreed. The video he made for 'Are You Lost in the World Like Me?' is without question one of the best videos that's ever been made for one of my songs."

Cutts added, "For me the video is about our increasing dependence on technology and about human interaction today, or a certain lack of it. It focuses on the way tech is changing us - how we have become desensitized."

VICE News: Deaf Culture 'Signs of Change'

Deaf Culture: VICE News Tonight on HBO - Full Segment.

VICE: Today, more than 40 percent of American children born Deaf receive cochlear implants. The technology effectively restores hearing by bypassing the ear and delivering audio information directly to the brain. The vast majority of Deaf children who are implanted develop hearing and speaking skills comparable to their hearing peers, thus allowing them the option to “mainstream” into normal schools in the United States.

Deaf education in the U.S. has gone through many phases. American Sign Language (ASL) is currently the dominant mode of instruction in Deaf schools, but there have been periods where ASL was banned and students were forced to speak and lip-read, an ineffective approach known as Oralism. ASL has now gained legitimacy and been shown to include the deep grammar and syntax found in spoken languages. It is also the wellspring of Deaf Culture, a proud community wary of historical attempts to assimilate them into a hearing world.

As more parents opt for cochlear implants, VICE News explores their impact on the medical condition that gave rise to a cultural identity.

Deaf History THAT - "Who Was Melville Ballard"

A short film from NAD in the Deaf History THAT: "Who Was Melville Ballard" with Linsay Darnall, Jr.

SILVER SPRING, Maryland -- The National Association of the Deaf is excited to release the new video series, Deaf History That! In this brief episode, Linsay Darnall, Jr. introduces Melville Ballard and shares some interesting facts about him.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Video description and transcript:

A man sits on an antique sofa, in front of a window. A small transparent NAD logo appears on bottom right.

LINSAY: There are many interesting Deaf people and among them, I’d like to tell you about one person in particular -- Melville Ballard. He was born in Maine and since he was Deaf, there were no known educational institution for Deaf children nearby. When he was eleven years old, he was informed that there was a Deaf school in Hartford. He enrolled and after nine years, Ballard completed his education. The school asked him to become a teacher there. The Columbia Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Washington, D.C. asked him to teach there, Ballard accepted the offer and soon afterwards, the college for the Deaf was established. He decided to enroll there and after two years, he graduated. Afterwards, he went back to teaching and did so for over fifty years! While he was teaching, Ballard along with a few others, founded a newspaper for Deaf people. The paper was called The Silent World. Ballard was actually one of the participants at that conference in Milan, Italy in 1880. Oh, here's another interesting fact about Ballard -- Congressman James Garfield, who later became the President of the U.S., corresponded with the French Emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte III, who communicated in French. The Congressman needed somebody to help him with the translation so he used Ballard, who was fluent in English, French, and Latin, to help with the translations. With Ballard's help, Garfield was able maintain his communications with the French Emperor. So, that is what I wanted to share with you today.

SILVER SPRING, Maryland -- The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is excited to release the new video series, Deaf History That! In this brief episode, learn what were one of our favorite pastimes. Here's Linsay Darnall, Jr. shares about the New England Gallaudet Association of the Deaf. #deafhistoryTHAT.

Video description and transcript:

A man stands in front of an off-white wall and an old model ship on top of an old bookcase. A small transparent NAD logo appears on bottom right.

LINSAY: Deaf people were faced with a dilemma that had raised concerns among them. It was generally known that Deaf people, upon the graduation from school, would acquire jobs and live at their respective places. However, the idea of Deaf people living far apart from their friends could have a negative impact on their intelligence. They needed to gather and discuss solutions. So in 1853, Deaf people in New England congregated in Vermont and decided to establish an organization. Subsequently, in 1854, Thomas Brown, who was in charge in developing the constitution for the newly formed group, and others gathered for a meeting in Henniker, New Hampshire. The meeting lasted for several days which formed the constitution and the name of the new organization the New England Gallaudet Association of the Deaf, the NEGAD. The purpose of the organization was to promote the intellectual growth among the Deaf people who lived in various places and to become a model for other states to follow. Eventually, other states had established their own state association which prompted the eventual establishment of the National Association of the Deaf, the NAD. All of that began with a group of people who were posed with a question that led to the national organization that made it possible for all Deaf to advance.

Video description and transcript:

A man sits at an old typewriter, the American flag is behind him. He types for a bit and then makes eye contact with the viewer.

LINSAY: Reading newspapers is one of the pastimes that Deaf people loved to do. The first official publication from the Deaf community was the American Annals for the Deaf that was widely circulated. Deaf people could follow what was happening in Deaf communities across the nation. Eventually, different schools for the Deaf would start their own paper; these papers shared opinions, discussions and stories. That prompted many Deaf people living in different areas to develop a sense of mutual cooperation which led up to the establishment of the National Association of the Deaf. These papers included entertaining stories, articles that started discussions on the issues that affected the schools of thought of the day, poems, and general news. A Deaf person in one place probably would read about the person they were familiar with in other area of America and so forth. The papers has greatly influenced the individuals within the Deaf community develop a sense of deep bond with each other.

Linsay goes back to typing.
