ASL performer Christine Sun Kim slams Fox Sports for omitting portion of her sign language anthem at Super Bowl LIV.

MIAMI -- "Why have a sign language performance that is not accessible to anyone who would like to see it?" Christine Sun Kim wrote in an impassioned op-ed.

Christine Sun Kim is speaking out after feeling snubbed during her American Sign Language (ASL) performance of the National Anthem and “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl LIV on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

In an opinion piece published by The New York Times on Monday, the 40-year-old performer, known professionally as Ms. Kim, shared an impassioned message about the discrimination she felt directed her way on game day.

“As a child of immigrants, a grandchild of refugees, a Deaf women of color, an artist and a mother, I was proud to perform the national anthem and ‘America the Beautiful’ in American Sign Language at the opening of the Super Bowl on Sunday,” she wrote.

“On what was supposed to be a ‘bonus feed’ dedicated to my full performance on the Fox Sports website, the cameras cut away to show close-ups of the players roughly midway through each song,” she wrote.

“Why have a sign language performance that is not accessible to anyone who would like to see it? It’s 2020,” she continued.

Fox Sports did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

Marlee Matlin, an actress who is Deaf and “has signed the anthem at three Super Bowls (in 1993, 2007 and 2016),” rallied behind Kim by sharing a video of her own on Twitter during the game.

“I thought the same. I was looking forward to watching that signing. Very disappointing!” one person responded. “Yes! I was disappointed they didn’t show her beautiful work throughout the whole song,” another added.

“You are a tireless advocate for equity [sic] and I applaud you for calling them out on this!!!!” a third person wrote.

One Twitter user called for action to be taken, writing: “Let’s take this one step further by recommending them that the ASL signer should be side by side with the other performer.”

Throughout Kim’s emotional op-ed, she expressed the hurt she felt following her performance.

“Being Deaf in America has always been political, and I needed to process some internal conflict before accepting,” she wrote. “I knew that some musical artists had refused opportunities to perform at the game last year in support of Colin Kaepernick. The ASL performance of ‘America The Beautiful’ & ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ live before the Super Bowl from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida -- While Demi Lovato earned high praise for her national anthem rendition at Super Bowl LIV Sunday, some eyes were elsewhere, as Deaf artist, Christine Sun Kim gave us a passionate American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation of the song at Hard Rock Stadium.

Christine Sun Kim performed both “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” during the broadcast of the 100th annual Super Bowl.

She not only demonstrated the words in ASL, but did an interpretive dance along with it before the San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs championship game kicked off. Many Twitter users commented on how entertaining and charismatic the performance was.

Demi Lovato did an amazing job singing the National Anthem for the super bowl. Wish they would show the ASL interpreter the whole time though.

Sun Kim’s drawings have been featured at the 79th Whitney Biennial, and many of her pieces demonstrate what life is like living with deafness. Her performance was part of the NFL’s collaboration with the National Association of the Deaf.

The 39-year-old Berlin-based American artist told Artnews News she was “a bit stunned” to even be considered as a Super Bowl performer, but decided to accept because “representation matters a great deal to me, and I hope that seeing a Deaf person signing the anthem will bring attention to various issues that plague our community.” Video credit: NADVlogs on https://youtube.com/nadvlogs.

For Deaf Tennis Player, Sound Is No Barrier

Lee Duck-hee, 18, of South Korea, is ranked 143rd in the world in a sport in which hearing the ball is considered crucial.

ASAN, South Korea -- To improve its chances in the boys’ team tennis event at the National Sports Festival here, Mapo High School in Seoul brought in a ringer from Jecheon, two hours southeast of the capital. His name was Lee Duck-hee, and he had first caught the coach’s eye when he was in elementary school.

Mapo High’s players pressed against the fence beside along the dusty hardcourts and chanted in support while Lee, 18, crushed forehand winners past his bespectacled opponent in the final. The 6-1, 6-1 win took little time - no surprise, as Lee is the best teenage player in South Korea, and a professional ranked 143rd in the world.

“Seeing the level of skill, power and returning is totally different than high school level,” said Jeong Yeong-sok, his doubles partner at the tournament.

Lee is exceptional among professionals, too. He is Deaf, and no Deaf player in the sport’s history has reached these heights. In tennis, simply seeing the ball is believed to be insufficient. Hearing the ball, top players say, enables faster reactions - a crucial advantage in a sport where powerful serves and groundstrokes mean that every tiny fraction of a second matters.

“There are so many different spins in tennis, and I can hear a lot of them coming off someone’s racket because I know what they all sound like,” said Katie Mancebo, a college tennis coach and volunteer coach for the United States Deaf tennis team. “But a Deaf player doesn’t know that sound, so they have to focus more on what the other person is doing, how they’re making contact, and what the ball looks like as it’s coming over the net.”

Joo Hyun-sang, the tennis coach at Mapo High School, said he was skeptical of Lee’s potential at first.

“When I met him the first time, I had certain doubts that being deaf would prevent him from being a great player,” he said. “But I grew confident from watching him develop and improve. I was very confident he could do it.”

Though already the second-highest-ranked player of professionals 18 and under, Lee has not fully broken through. He has yet to play a main-draw match at an ATP tournament or a Grand Slam, though he reached the final of a Challenger event, the level below the ATP World Tour, for the first time in September in Taiwan, and has made two semifinals since... How Christine Sun Kim, Deaf Sound Artist, Hears Everything.

Christine Sun Kim’s work is an expression of the spaces between sound and silence the many dimensions that are overlooked simply because no one can hear them.

For artist Christine Sun Kim, sound has many personalities. The Master of Fine Arts-holding TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) fellow, who has exhibited at Museum of Modern Art, held residencies at the Whitney Museum and most recently was guest artist at the MIT Media Lab, is challenging conventional ideas about sound through her art.

On a sleepy Sunday in Moabit, Berlin, I meet Kim, a petite 34-year-old with dyed blond hair tightly pulled back. Deaf since she was born, Kim exudes an energy that belies her silence, greeting me with a hug and kiss, before darting into the kitchen to make tea. We sit down and Skype to communicate, but there’s no need for video.

For the past seven years, Kim has lived between New York City and Berlin. But it was not until 2008, during an arts residency in gritty Berlin, that she began to consider sound as her next medium.

“I noticed how sound art was a thing and became intrigued about the concept. I am always drawn to conceptual art and the ideas behind a piece or installation,” she said.

“For me, sound had always been an idea an intangible space that separated me from others so I was curious about how art could transcend sound and vice versa.”

Korean CODA Sings For Parents Goes Viral

This is such a heartbreaking and emotional story, a son of Deaf parents with cancer sings emotional song on the Korean Talent Show.

SEOUL, South Korea -- Superstar K: 슈퍼스타 is a South Korean television talent show series. When asked by the judges of Superstar K6 for his reason behind auditioning, contestant Kim Jung Hoon is a Child of Deaf Adults, often known by the acronym "CODA", is a person who was raised by Deaf parents, Kim could hardly hold back tears as he revealed a heartbreaking story about his family.

“Both of my parents are Deaf,” Kim said in his pre-audition interview. He added that both of his parents lost their hearing during early childhood and currently have cancer: his mother suffering from thyroid cancer and his father from colorectal cancer.

“It felt like the world was falling apart,” he said. Despite their disabilities, Kim’s Deaf parents came to the audition to show full support for their son.

“When we see our son, even though we can’t hear him sing, we believe that he can succeed,” Kim’s father said through sign language. His wife agreed, saying that they believe in their son whether he sings well or poorly.

Once Kim took the stage, he proved that he could sing not only beautifully but also with powerful emotion. His rendition of Lee Sun-hee’s “Fate” moved some of the judges to tears.

The Korean Starbucks Barista, It’s all in the Signs.

SEOUL, South Korea -- Deaf Korean Starbucks barista, it’s all in the signs. Although a Starbucks branch in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul, was bustling with coffee lovers at around noon on Monday, employees worked in silence.

Most baristas at Starbucks franchises receive orders from the cashiers verbally, with shouts of machiatto, mochachino and latte echoing throughout the store.

But Hwang Jin, a 33-year-old Deaf barista, receives her orders via hand gestures. Employees give a thumbs-up to signal an Americano and make a “G” sign to confirm it’s a grande.

“When making foam with milk, those who are hearing-impaired rely on the sensation in their hand when frothing the milk instead of the sound,” barista instructor Sung Jeong-min said. “They are more sensitive to the vibrations of the milk steamer and produce a smoother taste in the coffee.”

What started out as a PR stunt to salvage his reputation turns into a serious bid for the National Championships. Acclaimed Korean director Kang Woo-seok’s first film based on a true story, 'GLove,' tells the story of a baseball team whose members are all hearing-impaired.

Kim Sang-nam (Jeong Jae-yeong), a hot-tempered former professional baseball player, is sent to the countryside to coach a team of hearing-impaired players in order to avoid media coverage of his recent involvement in an assault case.

At first, Kim has a difficult time imagining how he can teach baseball to a group of boys who can’t hear, but as he spends time with them he starts to believe that they can play the game.

Motivated, Kim decides to help them prepare for the nationals. But things don’t go the way Kim plans and their difficulties communicating with one another exacerbates the situation.

Korean Sex Crime Movie Highlights Nation’s Anger

Four teachers and administrators jailed for sexual abusing at Deaf school.

SEOUL, South Korea -- In 2006, Teachers were convicted of raping or sexually molesting at least eight students, ages 7 to 22 at a South Korean School for the Deaf.

Due to the country's lenient sentencing for sexual abuse, only two of the four officials served jail time. The case received limited attention at the time, but a new film based on the story has helped to fuel the nation's growing outrage in South Korea.

The New York Times reports that Dogani or The Crucible, which was released about a month ago, has now been seen by 4.4 million people, or nearly one in 10 South Koreans.

The case could have been largely forgotten if it wasn't for a newspaper intern who blogged about the trial. After one official at the Inhwa School for the hearing impaired was sentenced to only a year in jail for raping a 13-year-old girl, a Deaf man sitting in the courtroom screamed and tried desperately to express his anger through sign langage.

Lee Ji-won wrote, "It was clear that the man was shouting, ‘This is wrong! This is wrong!"' The blog inspired author Gong Ji-young to write a novel about the crimes committed at the school, and now the film based on the book has brought the story to an even larger audience.

As The Economist puts it, the response to the film has been "nothing short of earth-shaking." The film has inspired South Koreans to express their anger over a legal system that routinely allows those convicted of sex crimes to walk free.

Six people were indicted in the Inhwa case, and two of the perpetrators went to jail for less than a year. Another two were given a suspended sentence, and the others were acquitted because the statute of limitations on sex crimes had passed.

'Silenced' Official Trailer 2011 - Based on true story about the sexual assaults at Deaf school in South Korea.

SEOUL, South Korea -- In 2005 a shocking set of sexual abuse cases happened at South Korean School for the Deaf for girls. The teachers involved received relatively light sentences that maybe about to change.

SILENCED, based on a novel details the drama that went during that horrific time in perhaps one of the most controversial films of the year. As of the time of writing, the entire nation is in an uproar, that at the very least, reveals in stark detail the power of film. The film has also been at number one for weeks.

Based off the novel 'Dokani' - The Crucible tells the story of an art teacher whom begins teaching at a Deaf school. When he begins teaching there, he is dreaded by the uncomfortable atmosphere and fears there is more to the school than meets the eye, and there is. He, and a human rights activist, crack down on the school and their unfair dealings, and soon descovers that there is a man whom sexually assaults the little girls there. Movie was proposed by leading actor Gong Yoo, whom fell in love with the book during his time in the milirary, and felt the book needed to be adapted into film. This also marks Gong Yoo's 1st role outside of romantic comedies, which he was type-casted with.
