Deaf Student Gets Bullied at Mainstream School

Queensland school investigates allegations of bullying of Deaf student after video posted online in Australia.

BRISBANE, Australia -- A Queensland school is investigating accusations a Deaf student has been subjected to repeated bullying after a video purportedly showing an instance of the alleged abuse surfaced online.

The video, originally posted to social media site 9GAG, shows a group of students surrounding the schoolboy, stomping at him and throwing air punches at him.

The person who posted the video said the incident happened at Victoria Point State High School in Redland City, east of Brisbane, and claims their son is the victim.

"My Deaf son getting harassed at school by these a*******," the person said.

"I have been in contact with the school and yet nothing changes.

"My daughter took this video to show everyone what was happening on a daily basis."

The video has been circulated on other social media sites including Facebook and Reddit.

In a statement to 7NEWS.com.au, the Queensland education department said the school was aware of the video and does not tolerate bullying and violence.

"Victoria Point State High School is committed to providing a safe, respectful and disciplined learning environment," the statement read.

"Any situation that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students or others in the school community is treated extremely seriously and dealt with as a matter of priority.

Deaf people in VRChat talk about their life experiences and community.

Syrmor channel on YouTube shares the anime video in english subtitles of Deaf Awareness and educating about bullying by Hearing People.

Ray the anime girl in the beginning was born Deaf. Sio the anime girl that first appears at 3:06 became hard-of-hearing after the accident. She has diplacusis and tinnitus. Diplacusis makes it so that she hears double.

Sio will hear sounds at 2 different pitches simultaneously making it difficult to decipher what is being said. This makes some voices understandable and others not depending on the pitch of the voice. Tinnitus is a ringing in the ear that can be similar to the sensation of buzzing, hissing, chirping, or whistling.

Translating from American Sign Language into english isn't exactly 1:1 because of grammar structure. Certain lines were translated the way they were because of the context of the whole conversation. Big thanks to Quentin for helping me translate https://twitter.com/urquentin.

Deaf Disabled Man Brutally Attacked

Warning graphic content: Deaf Russian woman brutally beaten and tortured on Deaf physically handicapped outside while one records it.

MOSCOW, Russia -- Elya is a Deaf girl, 17 years old, attends mainstreaming school from Balashikha, a very inactive girl and tortures all people and beats for no reason, always lies and behaves like a spoiled brat. Nikita is also a Deaf boy, 16 years old, studying in school, there is a problem with his mother and he is in an orphanage, he is very weak and thin. What is the problem?

In that, Nikita's iPhone 6c broke and he took it for repairs, and suddenly Elya told him that she would give him an iPhone 8+, and that he give her 10 thousand ruble, but Nikita did not believe her, because he knows that she is lying brazenly and torturing. So, they met and he did not know that this would happen.

Let's go to Izmailovo Forest, and Elya started the problem, and tells him "where are my 10 thousand?" and he says he left and didn’t take it, because he has problems with his family, and Elya began to be rude to him and treat him terribly.

Elya, she is such a spoiled brat girl that you will start to communicate with her, and then once will start a problem, and the absurd speaks. Also, she steals phone numbers in stores, cuts herself, and beats anyone. So Nikita does not think that to sit in a colony is a terrible feeling. Let's get a lot of views so that the whole world sees and finds out that it’s a terrible feeling to do this to Deaf Russians.

Teens Assaulted Deaf Student, Filmed Incident

Atlanta teens face long suspension after assaulting hearing-impaired student at mainstream school.

ATLANTA, Georgia -- An Atlanta mother says a group of high school students who attacked her hearing-impaired daughter could be suspended from the school for one year or one semester.

Mother Kimberly Flournoy says her 18-year-old daughter Jacqueline was recently cold-clocked out of the blue on campus at Maynard Jackson High School.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

“He just turned around and slapped me. I was like, ‘OK, what just happened?’” Jacqueline Flournoy said.

Right before that, another student pulled the 18-year-old’s hair.

A third student recorded the attack, which happened Nov. 30, egging the other two students on.

"I think it was hate. They were just being spiteful and mean. They wanted to make a video about it and go viral,” Jacqueline Flournoy said.

Jacqueline Flournoy says the two brothers and a female student made vulgar comments about her relationship and her speech.

The 18-year-old, who is black, has a white boyfriend. She is also hearing-impaired.

Jacqueline’s mother posted the video on social media to raise awareness about bullying and to make sure the students are punished to the fullest extent.

The attackers were initially suspended for one day and forced to apologize.

"I want them expelled from school,” Kimberly Flournoy said.

The two brothers will face a tribunal Wednesday where they could be removed from the school for one year or one semester, according to the mother.

The girl who recorded the video could face cyber-bullying discipline, Kimberly Flournoy says.

Jacqueline Flournoy wants to turn the incident into something positive. She and her mother have created an anti-bullying campaign.

"It shouldn't be happening. If it is happening, you should speak up to somebody,” Jacqueline Flournoy said.

The 18-year-old says people have to learn to treat others with respect.

Kimberly Flournoy also has a message for the parents of kids who bully.

"Parents, [you] need to talk to your children. I mean, it's bad enough that adults treat each other like this, but for kids to do it, they're learning it from someone,” she said.

Atlanta Public Schools has not yet released a comment about the video.

Animated Short Film 'Deaf in a Hearing World'

The Inspiring Deaf Awareness Animated Short Film 'Deaf in a Hearing World' by StoryBooth.

StoryBooth shares inspirational real stories animated short film is about a young teenage Deaf girl, Jocelyn, 15, wearing cochlear implant, survivor by bullying at mainstreaming school in a hearing world. English subtitles version.

Related Short Film: Deaf Awareness: Alone In A Hearing World.

It's hard enough to go from middle school to high school, even harder when you are going to a brand new school, but imagine doing all of that and being deaf - the only deaf student in the school. That's what Jocelyn was going through when she entered 9th grade - alone in a big new school, without a friend, and feeling so out of place being a Deaf person in a hearing world.

Her cochlear implants American Sign Language helped her to hear, just a bit, but they also looked strange to the other kids. She didn't know anyone, had no friends there, and nobody seemed to care about her, or noticed that she was all alone. In fact, because she was Deaf, the other kids ignored her, or looked at her strangely and whispered to each other. This all made her feel even more alone, more different. She felt so isolated. Her deafness seemed to be holding her back and and stopped students from getting close to her in a way she should be just like any other kid.

Then, one day in poetry class, a boy sitting in front of her passed her a note. She had never gotten a note before. He asked her is she wanted a friend. She could hardly believe it, hardly trust it - but there he was, asking, sincere.

She said yes and, eventually, they became best friends! He spoke to her as if she wasn't Deaf, and that made her so happy. He made her feel like she belonged. He treated her just like any other hearing person. And they did what any other friends would do, went to the Mall, to Starbucks, and the library to study and draw. He began to experience a day though a deaf person's eyes.

Now they are always hanging out together. And he taught Jocelyn the true meaning of friendship, which was the greatest gift she had ever received. It changed her, brought her back to life, and for that, Jocelyn will always be thankful and grateful.

Bullies Dump Deaf Student's Backpack In Toilet

High school bullies dump Deaf students backpack in toilet has gained national attention in the United States.

OMAHA, Nebraska -- High school bullies in Omaha, Nebraska chose a Deaf student as their victim in a sickening incident that has gained national attention, KMTV reported.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The mean-spirited students dumped the contents of Alex Hernandez's backpack into a toilet at mainstreaming school.

Alex, a senior, had left his backpack on a chair while getting some food Wednesday in the cafeteria of Burke High School. When he returned, it was gone.

Alex told school administrators, but a search proved fruitless. However, when school security video was examined, two male students were seen walking off with his bag.

"Those students think it's okay to bully a Deaf student, but it's not. It's not okay to bully someone who is Disabled, Deaf or Hard of Hearing," Hernandez told KMTV. "Or anyone for that matter."

The backpack contained his tablet, a debit card, school supplies, a battery for his cochlear implant and his homework. It was the homework that really bothered him. The toilet dousing ruined his English project.

"I was very upset because I know I work really hard on my project and homework because I just want to make my mom to be happy and know that I did a good job on the homework," he told KMTV.

According to the station, school administrators told Alex's mother that the students who took the backpack were eventually identified and that one has been suspended. The pair claim they didn't know Alex was Deaf.

The incident remains under investigation. Meanwhile Alex's mother has pulled the boy out of Burke High so he can transfer to another high school.

Alex's sister and some of his friends set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to replace the ruined items. The goal was reached, and the account has since been closed. Source.

UPDATE: Students Involved in Burke High Incident Have Been Disciplined, District Says.

KETV: The Omaha Public School District released a statement Tuesday, saying the students involved in the incident have been disciplined. The district said, because of privacy laws, they would not identify the students, or provide specific details about the discipline. Here is the full text of the statement.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"We are aware of the situation involving theft of a student’s property that occurred last week at Burke High School.

Bullied Deaf Boy Forced To Leave School

Son James was mercilessly picked on in the playground because he has a hearing impairment at mainstreaming school.

DUNDEE, UK -- The Sunday Post: Chris said teachers did little to tackle the problem when James was subjected to name-calling by other pupils.

Eventually, Chris and wife Samantha were forced to take the step of removing him from the school due to the “lack of understanding from teachers”.

“People are ignorant – that’s not going to change,” said the former striker, who has tried to teach his son how to deal with the name-calling.

He said: “It is wrong for children to tease and bully but it happens through school and as much as we’d like it to, it will probably never be eradicated.

“I prepare James for this. What I couldn’t understand was the lack of understanding from his teachers at his previous school.

Related: Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access

“They did not know how to treat him because of his hearing aids.”

Following abuse at the hands of other children, Chris was forced to carefully explain to James that he was happy with him just the way he his.

“You find out who your friends are,” is the difficult advice he gave him.“Kids have to work things out for themselves,” he added.

Since placing James in another school, he has flourished and is now an accomplished hockey player, much to his dad’s delight.

Chris said: “Going to his new school totally transformed him as a person.

“He was depressed and lacked self-belief and it was because of the common sense and logical understanding of the teachers at his new school that he began to build his confidence.”

The now 14-year-old’s early life was beset by problems.

James was born prematurely at 28 weeks in September

2001 at The Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow, weighing just 3lb.

He was so tiny, Chris could hold him in the palm of his hand.

After weeks of specialist care, he was eventually allowed to go home.

However, Samantha rushed James to the former Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow 10 days later when he fell seriously ill with a respiratory virus.

He was choking and having terrifying episodes where he would stop breathing.

She took him to hospital but while in the waiting room he stopped breathing again.

He was rushed to a side room where doctors resuscitated him. Medics said he could have died if he hadn’t got there when he did.

Chris, 43, said: “My wife had this feeling and she turned round and James was going blue.

“They rushed him into the hospital and he had gone. They got him back.

“He was in a long time. They resuscitated him. He was a tiny baby. It was the most worrying thing that has ever happened.

“Had we lived any further away we might not have got there in time. Another minute and he might not have been here. We were told that.”

Doctors said James was suffering from RSV – a common virus with cold-like symptoms.

Healthy children tend to shrug it off, but it can be life-threatening for premature babies.

The star was in Spain at the time preparing for a crucial UEFA Cup tie with Valencia when Samantha called to say James was fighting for his life.

He immediately tried to get a flight home, but couldn’t.

In the end he chose not to go to the match but instead stayed at the hotel where Samantha could call to give him updates.

He flew home early next day and went to the intensive care ward where he and Samantha kept a bedside vigil.

The footballer said it was the most worrying time of his life.

“James was on life support. It was touch-and-go,” he revealed.

“You hope, you sit and pray and think about things.

Beauty Vlog 'You Look Disgusting' Goes Viral

A blogger started a conversation on beauty when her video showing comments about her looks with and without makeup went viral.

Three months ago, 'My Pale Skin' aka beauty blogger Em Ford began posting images of herself without makeup on social media. The following film contains real comments that were left on images of her face.

Over the past few months, Em Ford received thousands of messages from people all over the world who suffer or have suffered from acne, an insecurity or self confidence issues.

Em Ford wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men. One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we're so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing - You ARE beautiful.

You are beautiful - no matter how flawed you feel, no matter how upset you may about the way you look or how hard you find it to make friends, or be confident. Believe in yourself, and never let anyone tell you're not beautiful - not even yourself - Em Ford.

Anti-Bullying At Florida School For The Deaf

Florida School for the Deaf and Blind takes anti-bullying stand.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Florida -- Since the implementation of the Jeffrey Johnston "Stand up for All Students" Act, which was passed in 2008, all schools in the state are required to have anti-bullying policies in place.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine is just one district working to eliminate bullying. Students from elementary through high school are learning about the importance of being respectful, responsible and cooperative.

"She was teasing me like 'I didn't know the words, I didn't know the English language," said student Julia Kadzis.

"In my last school, I had no friends. No one would talk to me really," explains freshman Gracie Delong.

"I've had lots of experiences with bullying here and in the world, and I've tolerated it," said senior D.J. Snell.

Students at FSDB recall their own personal experiences with bullying. "They kept bullying me because I'm a Deaf person," Snell said.

"No one would talk to me really, no one would sit next to me at the lunch table," said Delong. "And the same group of girls would bully me because they didn't think I could see certain things." ... Read The Full Story.

Amanda Todd's Story: Struggling, Bullying, Suicide, Self Harm

Bullied teen leaves behind chilling YouTube video.

PORT COQUITLAM, British Columbia -- A teenager posted a heartbreaking video on YouTube chronicling years of bullying in school and online, cutting and humiliation up until she died this week.

Amanda Todd, 15, posted the video called "My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self harm" on Sept. 7 and was found dead in her home town of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, just over a month later.

"Hello, I've decided to tell you about my never ending story," the black and white video begins. Todd can only be seen from her nose down for most of the video, occasionally moving around so that her face is visible. She silently tells her story through a series of white cards with black marker writing on them.

She describes using webcam chats to meet and talk to new people online as a seventh grade student. She said that people told her she was "stunning, beautiful, perfect" and a man pressured her to flash her chest. One year later, she did... Read The Full Story.

I'm struggling to stay in this world, because everything just touches me so deeply. I'm not doing this for attention. I'm doing this to be an inspiration and to show that I can be strong. I did things to myself to make pain go away, because I'd rather hurt myself then someone else. Haters are haters but please don't hate, although im sure I'll get them. I hope I can show you guys that everyone has a story, and everyones future will be bright one day, you just gotta pull through. I'm still here aren't I?

RIP Amanda Todd - November 27, 1996- October 10, 2012 'My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self harm' by Amanda Todd.

Deaf Girl's Bullying In Mainstream School

What it's like a life struggle being Deaf in the mainstream school.

Jazzy tells a story, her speaking, her heart, poured out. If you are Deaf, Hearing Impaired, or just don't understand, here is what she said...

Jazzy The Blondie was born with a hearing impairment. She was Deaf completly till the age of 6 because her parents got the hearing devices. But since she first stepped in elementary school, there was never a day someone would push her down, call her names, not talk to her, and mostly, never a day that her own school teacher would respect Jazzy.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

In the mainstream school, Jazzy was stupid, and was dumb. She would get best up at school because when She say "what, I can't hear you.." they would take that as sarcasm. She got referrals, suspensions, and got kicked out of school for things she haven't done. She was accused of "smoking in the bathroom" in my 4th grade year. She was "accused of beating up 3 girls in the back of school" when She didn't even know how to fight, and in field trips the principal was always picking her up and taking her to detention because she would get into fights, but they would pick up the ones who fought with her.

She was always in trouble for standing for herself. The school principal abused her, and even had her hold back a year in school for no reason whatsoever, almost fired her mom from her job and she left her last day of school with a concussion and four stab wounds on her back from those tacks that pin papers with on the wall because of this girl that would always fight with her. She only had her friend in those years. but she was worse than her, she commit suicide at the age of thirteen she was eleven, She call the cops on it cause.

The sad thing is she couldn't even attend the funeral, the parents had her buried in Arizona. She became suicidal, cut, drank smoked, but she joined martial arts later. and she is still in martial arts now to this day.

In 6th grade, she started having friends. People knew not to mess with her cause all this made stronger. and she always had to get in a fight. But she was so happy when she didn't lose her first real fight that gained the full respect.

She was wondered though, why people are so cruel still. Especially when someone has a disability they have to live with there whole life, and they laugh about it. Actions may be stronger than words, but no one said words didn't hurt as well. She is still hurt though. because its been since 6th grade that no ones bothered her until like two weeks ago, she cried her eyes out and just broke down, because this girl in her class would say "I m surprised you can hear the school bell."

If only she could put all those people in her shoes, and show them what its like to be like this, alone, rejected, hurt to judge what you don't understand. This is why she decide to give hugs. because in those times, nobody was there to give the one. No one deserves to live her life, a life without anyone beside them. She Love you guys and promise.

If you lived with a disability, a bad habit, a different sexual orientation, or an impairment, and you blame it for all your problems, and what you've been through in your past, don't. Thank god for it. why?

It makes you stronger than anyone else that consider thereselves "normal", and you being the "Abnormal, weird, strange" person. It makes you more confident than others, and more tougher through out life. Don't reflect the pain you went through on others, turn that pain into something greater, and give something to others, that you never had before like friendship, love, trust Jazzy.

Familiar Stories of the Mainstream School:

"Alone In A Hearing World" shows true to life scenarios of a young Deaf boy growing up in a hearing world. With family members who can't communicate and continuous misunderstandings by his teachers and coaches, he is forced to live in a world of isolation. However, when he pleas for his Mothers understanding and falls short, he ends up in the only place he seems to find acceptance.

Deaf Student Bullied at the AG Bell School

Deaf student bullied at the Alexander Graham Bell school in Chicago.

CHICAGO, Illinois -- A young Deaf boy says first he was bullied by some classmates and then a teacher allegedly joined in. The third-grader attends Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School in Chicago, where he says he’s been repeatedly hit and verbally abused by students.

One even allegedly threatened him using sign language. Earlier this year while at recess, Padilla says a boy hit him and tore his cochlear implant from his ear and head.

His mother, Christina Maldonado Padilla, says it was an act of both physical and emotional aggression.

“I think he’s fed up with it,” she says.

Christina says the alleged bully threw her son’s $45,000 cochlear implant somewhere on the playground and then the school sent Jason Padilla home without it. In fact, he didn’t get it back until the next day. His mother says it was broken from sitting in the rain.

“When we put it back together it was wet, so it was not working,” she says. “Jason was Deaf for three days.”

Christina says school officials never called to tell her about the incident and she didn’t find out about it until he got off the school bus without his implant.

She says the alleged bully was only suspended from recess for a few days. Meanwhile, Jason Padilla no longer wants to go to school.

His mother called their alderman, and that’s when she believes her son’s third-grade teacher retaliated, allegedly flicking her finger at his implant, causing swelling to his ear and head.

“He’s very afraid. It’s an everyday thing that we had to tell him, ‘Tomorrow no school, OK, OK,’ so he wouldn’t cry and then in the morning, deal with the reality that he has to go,” Christina says.

She also is concerned about the school’s solution to all of his alleged problems.

A Chicago Public School spokesperson says he was moved him from his third-grade class to a multi-age, self-contained class of two fifth-graders and nine fourth-graders, making him the only third-grader in the bunch.

A CPS spokesperson says: “While this matter is still being investigated to determine exactly what happened, we have been and continue to work closely with the student and his family to ensure that all of the services and resources that he needs are provided.”
