Mob Beats Up Deaf Woman Over 'Kidnapping'
A four-month pregnant Deaf woman was beaten up by a mob over suspicion that she was a child lifter.
NEW DELHI, India -- A pregnant and Deaf woman was thrashed by a mob over suspicion of being a child-lifter in northeast Delhi, police said on Sunday, an incident which comes close on the heels of mob attacks over similar rumours in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
Several people have been injured in violence over the rumours in UP over the past week, forcing the state police to warn the public that it has decided to invoke the stringent National Security Act against rumour-mongers.
The four-month pregnant woman was beaten up by a mob in Harsh Vihar on August 27 over suspicion that she was a child lifter, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur said.
A resident of southeast Delhi's Tughlakabad, the woman was admitted to a hospital by her family and her condition is stated to be stable, according to police.

The DCP said a case has been registered at the Harsh Vihar police station under Indian Penal Code sections for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint.
"We have arrested two persons, Deepak (27) and B Shakuntala (52), residents of Mandoli," he said. He urged people not to pay heed to rumours of child abduction.
The woman's family alleged that her in-laws had banished her from their Faridabad home on August 18 and said she was missing since then.
"Somehow the woman reached Harsh Vihar and was staying on a footpath. Locals used to give her food but on August 27, they attacked her over allegations of child lifting," a police officer said.
The family approached the Delhi Police after seeing a video of the incident.

Judge Convicts Deaf Men For Girl's Rape
A Delhi court has convicted two hearing and speech impaired for offences which included committing unnatural sex on a five-year-old girl.
NEW DELHI, India -- Additional Sessions Judge Ashwani Kumar Sarpal held the duo guilty after finding that the duo had conspired with each other in kidnapping the minor for the purpose of illicit sexual intercourse. They also held that the victim was so young that she could not even save herself and resist the attackers.
The incident took place in 2012 when the girl and her family went to her maternal uncle Abdul Gaffar's house during Holi. On March 8, 2012 she went missing while playing outside the house. Following this, when Gaffar started looking for her at 5.45 am on that day, he found his niece with a person who ran away after seeing him.
When asked, the victim confided in her uncle that one of the accused, who was accompanied by another man, forcibly abducted her after closing her mouth. Thereafter she was given bites on her lips, cheeks and chest following which she was raped.
The victim became unconscious on the day of the incident and recorded her statement a day later.
One of the accused was arrested on March 9, 2012 and the 'Pajami' (lower) of the victim was recovered at his instance. Subsequently, the second accused was also apprehended on March 12, 2012.
The accused persons who recorded their statement through sign language stated that they being falsely implicated and were ignorant about the present case.
Appearing for the accused, their counsel contended that no witnesses were joined in the probe. However, the court quashed this argument and stated that non-joining of any public witness itself was not fatal to the prosecution's case because often the general public do not easily agree to join police proceedings for a number of reasons. These include going to police station or court, fear of accused, or to maintain good relations with the accused, and to avoid any confrontation with him.
"Public persons are ready to watch the 'Tamasha' at the spot by standing at some distance but do not become ready to co-operate with the police," the judge said.
The court added that the victim has already suffered lot of trauma and grievous injuries at the hand of the accused persons. Even if the victim had not complained to anyone when she was brought back to her house, it could not be said that she was lying.
"It cannot be expected from a child of five years of age who was subjected to various injuries and sexual assault to stop people on the way and make a complaint to passersby," the judge said in its order.
The court fixed September 12 as the date for arguments on the quantum of sentence.

Indian Restaurants Staffed By Deaf People
Mirchi & Mime and Chai Pe Charcha restaurants, Deaf waiters staff serve imaginative takes on classic Indian cuisine in Mumbai.
MUMBAI, India -- He will constantly look at your lips to figure out what you're saying, without saying a word in return.
Meanwhile, he will note your order down, with his colleagues mirroring his actions at other tables. This is the scene you will find at two restaurants in the city -- Mirchi and Mime, and Chai Pe Charcha -- which have employed only Deaf people as their service staff.
At the Powai-based Mirchi and Mime, which has 25 Deaf employees, a waiter's uniform reads, 'Sign Language is my super power, what's yours?'. With inscrutable countenance and swift-hand gestures, he would ensure that your order is placed correctly.

The year-old restaurant conducted an eight-week training programme before selecting these employees. "A lot of them had never taken up a single job in their lives. Their parents had accepted that they would remain jobless. But some others, interestingly, have been the sole earning members of their families," said Prashant Issar, the co-founder of Mirchi and Mime.
Issar, who has himself picked up sign language, added: "We were very certain that we had to capitalise on their abilities instead of focusing on their disabilities and our staff, as such, more dedicated than others. They do not have clutter in their minds."
Talking about her experience of working at the restaurant, Priyanka Singh said through sign language: "TV and movie celebrities appreciate us and salute us for the confidence with which we carry out our duties and bring them joy."
Meanwhile, at the quirky Chai Pe Charcha in Lower Parel -- a haven for tea lover -- there are not only board games kept on the tables with rustic yet colourful walls all around, but there is also a unique staff demographic to top it all. The restaurant has employed two Deaf people as members of its service staff.
Anil Kohli, who himself has had physical disabilities since birth, founded the restaurant only six months ago. He said: "I am blessed with a good family and finances, but not everyone else is. It is too easy to write a cheque for charity and feel good about it, but we're not empowering the unfortunate by doing the same and, instead, only making them more dependent."
People often get surprised when Joel Pereira, one of the employees, rings their bell to deliver food and hands over the bill without saying a word. He said: "People often look at me in shock. They must wonder how a Deaf man can deliver food. But once they gulp down that fact, they smile."

Teacher Slaps Deaf Toddler For Wanting Food
Deaf News: Teacher slaps toddler caused Deaf for wanting food in bother’s school in India.
AGRA, India -- A hungry two-and-a-half-year-old boy was allegedly slapped so hard by a teacher for asking for food at his older siblings' school during a mid-day meal service that he has lost his hearing. Doctors have confirmed that the minor has suffered "at least partial loss of hearing" after the incident which took place in Mansukh Pura, Bah, on Wednesday.
The boy, Rajat Singh, had on Wednesday gone to the government school where his three older siblings Rohini Singh, Radha Singh and Rohit Singh study. During the mid-day meal he sought food from teacher Raghuvir Raghuvir, who then slapped the minor as he was "not a part of the school".
"My son has lost his hearing ability in one ear," said Rajat's father Shyamvir Singh, "Rajat is yet to enrol in primary school but he wanted to attend class with his brother and sisters. He was hungry and asked for food, when Raghuvir slapped him hard on the face. The slap caused Rajat's ear to bleed. Later we found out from doctors that he had partially lost his hearing ability."
Rubbishing Shyamvir's claims, the accused teacher, Raghuvir, told TOI: "Shyamvir is not telling the truth. The child was normal till the end of school. The matter was sensationalized after the child reached home."
He said, "I did slap Rajat for wandering around the school ground alone, where stray dogs could have attacked and hurt him. The blame for that would have fallen on me for being negligent."
A written complaint has been received in the matter from Shyamvir Singh and police said they will take the appropriate course of action after conducting a thorough investigation.

New App Features For Deaf Uber Drivers
Uber just made it easy to be a Deaf drivers.
MUMBAI, India -- When Salman, an Uber driver in Mumbai, could not take calls from passengers, customers would cancel his ride. He would also have to text every rider to let them know that he’s Deaf, which caused delays when picking up his riders.
Uber just made life easier for him and several drivers across the world who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
An update to the taxi-hailing app, which was launched in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., has now gone live in India.
While there has been no official announcement on this yet, Uber has confirmed this development in India.
So, how does the app work?
Once a driver chooses to turn on the special features by flipping a switch inside the app, a light will flash when a new trip is requested in addition to the existing audio cue.
The passengers won't be able to call the driver as that option will be blocked. Riders who want to provide special pickup instructions, can only to do so via text.
The app also adds an extra screen for passengers to enter their destination alongside a note that lets them know their driver is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing.
“We hope these features help extend the earning opportunity that Uber presents to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community,” Ben Metcalfe, head of product innovation at Uber, wrote in his blog.
Miraj Vora, who took a ride with Salman, tweeted that he happy with his experience.
"I had a great ride with Salman. We spoke about his new life as a driver in Mumbai and it was a peaceful ride overall," he told HuffPost India.
Though the learning process is the same for all drivers, the trainers usually spend more time with them. "We are also planning to get professional aid for training," Uber spokesperson said.
“If I can do it, so can you.” Larry is Deaf and on a mission to follow his dreams. Find out how partnering with Uber made it possible for him to move to LA and support his family while starting a new career.
As reported by WHO, there are about 250-300 million Deaf people in the world, with 66 percent of them live in the underdeveloped nations, and India has the largest share.
A spokesperson from Uber said that not too many Deaf drivers have signed up for it yet.
But, this is just the beginning of the initiative and a much appreciated one.
