Deaf TikToker Uses App To Raise Awareness

This viral TikTok from a Deaf creator is moving hearing people to learn American Sign Language.

LOS ANGELES, California -- Deaf activist and TikToker, Chrissy Marshall's blog "The Essential Sign" shares experience on social media, she is raising awareness about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community and teaching hearing people sign language, one viral video at a time.

If you don't live with a disability, you may not appreciate how crucial and meaningful community and accessibility are - but one viral TikTok is demonstrating it perfectly.

Chrissy Marshall, a 19-year-old content creator in Los Angeles, was born hard of hearing and became profoundly Deaf in high school. Now, she makes content on YouTube and TikTok about her disability and American Sign Language.

One of those videos captures a "special" day she had recently. In the TikTok video, Marshall, looking happy and excited, recounts her day of encountering three people who signed to her in American Sign Language.

"The sun was shining, people were signing, and everything felt so fluid," Marshall told BuzzFeed News in an interview. "I thought I was being pranked or something, like cameras were going to pop out and ask about my day."

"The area has a big Deaf community," she added, "and I’m glad and inspired to see the impact it’s had on the greater community as a whole."

The video is making other people happy too, and it's encouraging them to learn American Sign Language.

"Oh my god. Today has been crazy," she says and signs in the video. "Today I went to three places and all three people signed."

She describes stopping at the bank, where a teller signed with her, then at Starbucks, where a Deaf barista signed, and then she grabbed a pretzel, where the worker also signed.

"Everyone signed! It was like a perfect world. It's like a utopia."

The TikTok was reuploaded to Twitter, where it went viral.

Marshall said her online platform has given her the opportunity to spread awareness about disability rights, American Sign Language, and deafness.

Her other videos cover what it's like to be Deaf. She also posts fun ones like American Sign Language versions of songs.

"I’m so glad it’s just more people I get the opportunity to educate and inspire to be part of the community," said Marshall. "I am a huge advocate for people learning American Sign Language, and I’m happy and grateful so many people were inspired to do so."

BURBANK, California -- When Glenda and Raphi Savitz of Newton, Massachusetts, discovered their daughter Samantha was born Deaf, they started learning American Sign Language (ASL) so they could communicate with her. Little did they know, all of their neighbors signed up for ASL classes, too.

Nyle DiMarco Reads To Deaf Kids In Video Clip

Dancing With the Stars champ Nyle DiMarco reads to Deaf kids in 'adorable' video clip from Twitter.

FREDERICK, MD -- People Magazine: On Friday, the Deaf model who won America's Next Top Model cycle 22 in 2015 and the most recent season of Dancing With the Stars earlier this year took to Twitter to share a heartwarming video.

The clip shows Nyle DiMarco, 26, signing with two young kids and asking them to name the colors in a picture book.

In his own words, the result is quite simply "adorable."

Earlier this year, the showstopper told PEOPLE he "never wanted to hear."

"That's never existed in my life," he said. "I'm happy!"

The model and actor was born in New Jersey and raised in Frederick, Maryland, by his single mom and he's just one of more than 25 Deaf people in his family: His twin brother, his older brother, his parents, grandparents and great-grandparent are all Deaf.

"Growing up, I was always involved in the Deaf community," said the star, who recently established the Nyle DiMarco Foundation which advocates that parents teach their Deaf children American Sign Language even if they plan on getting their child a cochlear implant or hearing aid.

"I started to realize that there are a lot of people who are unaware of Deaf Culture, and I've been given a great platform to reframe the Deaf community," he told PEOPLE. "I want to use my celebrity for good."

WATCH: 'DWTS' Peta Murgatroyd talks overcoming challenges with partner Nyle DiMarco: 'I've never trained with a Deaf person before'

LOS ANGELES -- Entertainment Tonight spoke with both the dancing pro and her Dancing with the Stars partner at the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday, where Peta Murgatroyd admitted that working with Nyle DiMarco is a very different experience for her.

"I've never trained with a Deaf person before, so it's a whole new ball game for me," she said. "Being a teacher, I have to really find out different teaching methods to be able to overcome this, and so far we're going really well."

One person who doesn't seem nervous at all is the America's Next Top Model winner. In fact, DiMarco is excited about how quickly he's learning to dance.

"Actually, my dancing feet are pretty good," he told ET via his interpreter on the orange carpet. "I'm pretty surprised and pretty impressed, because I've never danced before. I also have a great teacher!"

"It's not exactly what I expected," the 26-year-old model added. "I thought that I would struggle a lot and it would be frustrating, but actually, it's going really well."

The dancing duo revealed that they will have to cha cha "straight out of the gate," and the ballroom pro says their take on it is "fast, sexy, fun, high energy!"

ET also caught up with the pair on Wednesday at Planet Hollywood in New York City, where DiMarco revealed Murgatroyd has already helped him boost his confidence on the dance floor.

"The first day that we met, right before she came in, of course I've never danced ever. So that's what I was nervous about," he shared. "I didn't want to look bad on the first day of rehearsals. Now I'm not nervous at all. All thanks to her."

Murgatroyd echoed his statements, praising DiMarco for his hard work and dedication in rehearsals.

"He's doing amazingly well. Part [of that] is just his amazing work ethic," she gushed. "He literally doesn't sit down. Usually people will sit down every five minutes, but he works constantly throughout the four hours that we have."

"He's just so visually aware," she added. "Probably doubly as visually aware as anyone else because he doesn't have hearing. He picks up the steps very quickly, and its very surprising. At first I was really nervous, too. I didn't know how it was going to go. I wanted to be clear, I wanted to make sure that I could be the best teacher possible."

If the pair does win season 22, it will be the second time Murgatroyd has won DWTS. She and NFL star Donald Driver took home the mirror ball trophy during season 14.

DiMarco is joined in the competition by an all-star cast that includes Jodie Sweetin, Mischa Barton, Ginger Zee and Super Bowl 50 MVP, Von Miller.

Miller is paired with pro Witney Carson, who ET also caught up with at the KCAs. The newylwed dished on how the NFL pro was shaping up in the ballroom.

"He's picking up things so quick. He's great on choreography. He's an amazing student," she gushed. "I love that because I get to boss a big football player around... Read more on ET.

Deaf Mom Teaches Hearing Son ASL

A Deaf mother, Jasmine Garcia-Freeland's son, River is currently 22 months old and is a Children of Deaf Adults, often known by the acronym "CODA", is a person who was raised by Deaf parents. He started learning American Sign Language (ASL) since he was about 6 months old. ASL is his first language and it has been an amazing experience teaching him ASL.

This video showed the same flashcards under playskool brand that I used last year and now River knows all vocabularies in both spoken language and ASL.

'ANTM' Contestant Nyle DiMarco's ASL Phrases

While it’s easy to brush off America's Next Top Model in its 22nd cycle, there’s one very hunky reason to still watch: Nyle DiMarco.

In fact, this cycle has been fun to watch as the guys an addition to the competition in cycle 20 have been bringing the drama, as well as the sex appeal.

Nyle DiMarco is one the show’s leading contestants, standing at 6’2” with piercing blue eyes and washboard abs. He also happens to be Deaf, which Tyra Banks and others initially thought of as a possible hindrance.

But over the course of the competition, the 26-year-old model has shown that it’s actually a benefit. DiMarco tells ET that reading body language comes naturally to him, helping him understand how to pose with his body.

The cycle 22 breakout sat down with ET to talk about embracing fame.

He can also shut out all the unending fights that take place in the house each week. “Fortunately, I'm Deaf, so I don't have to hear all of their drama,” says DiMarco, staying above the fray that often comes back to Banks’ Ty-Overs. “I just want to say that you all are complaining about hair, hair, hair. Am I complaining about my deafness? No, I am not.”

When it comes to his best assets, Banks and fellow judge (and PR maven) Kelly Cutrone have taken notice of his abs and waist, often asking him to remove his shirt during panel. Internet Slang Meets American Sign Language

How do you sign "new" words? The Deaf community works as a network, collectively brainstorming new sign language term over the web, until dominant emerge.

Hope and Fears: As language evolves, the powers that regulate language tend to shift. Just look at the Oxford English Dictionary, who added terms like “duck face,” “lolcat,” and “hawt” to their prestigious lexicon this past December. For the English-speaking world, these additions are anywhere from ridiculous to annoying but at the end of the day, the terms are accepted and agreed upon.

But how do these new, internet-laden turns of phrase enter the sign language community? Was there a way of expressing “selfie” in ASL, was there a sign for “photobomb?” Our simplistic question turned into a larger conversation about the nature of communication.

We turned to Bill Vicars, the president and owner of an organization called Lifeprint, a company who educates through “technology-enhanced delivery of ASL Instruction, excursion-based instruction (trips to amusement parks), and extended-immersion-based program coordination (intense two-week residencies).”

Vicars himself is Deaf/HH, which means he is hard of hearing and culturally Deaf as he has immersed himself in the Deaf community. “In addition to my co workers, the majority of my friends are Deaf… my wife is Deaf,” Vicars explains. (Capitalizing ‘Deaf’ refers to the Deaf community, as noted by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries, in Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture (1988), “We use the lowercase deaf when referring to the audiological condition of not hearing, and the uppercase Deaf when referring to a particular group of deaf people who share a language - American Sign Language and a culture.”

NEW YORK CITY -- Imagine trying to learn biology without ever using the word “organism.” Or studying to become a botanist when the only way of referring to photosynthesis is to spell the word out, letter by painstaking letter.

For Deaf students, this game of scientific password has long been the daily classroom and laboratory experience. Words like “organism” and “photosynthesis” to say nothing of more obscure and harder-to-spell terms have no single widely accepted equivalent in sign language. This means that Deaf students and their teachers and interpreters must improvise, making it that much harder for the students to excel in science and pursue careers in it.

“Often times, it would involve a lot of finger-spelling and a lot of improvisation,” said Matthew Schwerin, a physicist with the Food and Drug Administration who is Deaf, of his years in school. “For the majority of scientific terms,” Mr. Schwerin and his interpreter for the day would “try to find a correct sign for the term, and if nothing was pre-existing, we would come up with a sign that was agreeable with both parties.” ...
