WATCH: Exclusive interview with director of 'Dawn of the Deaf' Rob Savage, talks the Deaf role in short horror film.
LONDON, UK -- ComingSoon: Director Rob Savage discusses his innovative new apocalyptic short horror film Dawn of the Deaf. Fresh off a triumphant, head-turning premiere at Fantastic Fest, the spectacularly inventive, gorgeously executed Dawn of the Deaf logline.
“When a strange sound wipes out the Hearing population, a small group of Deaf people must band together to survive” threatens to go ultra-viral via upcoming screenings at BFI London Film Festival, London Fright Fest, Sitges Film Festival, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, Uppsala International Short Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival and several others.
“Our aim was to create a genre film that would connect Deaf and hearing audiences in an engaging, thrilling way,” director Rob Savage tells ComingSoon.net of his apocalyptic horror short made with a cast drawn from the London Deaf community. “Rather than retread the same narratives usually seen when dealing with disability, we wanted to create a tense story in which the characters’ ‘disability’ becomes their ultimate advantage over the hearing population.”
Savage was gracious enough to speak with ComingSoon.net at length about the joys and challenges of leading that charge… Read More The Full Interview.

Deaf Rugby Highlights - Northern Marlins
WATCH [CC] - Interviews with the Northern Marlins Deaf Rugby Union.
AUCKLAND, NZ -- In this film, AttitudeLive meet Auckland's Deaf rugby team, the Marlins. We've followed the guys on and off the field and in the run up to the biggest game of the season. The Northern Marlins is a Deaf Rugby Football Club for the Deaf, founded in 1993. The team are based in Auckland, New Zealand. The colours are Blue and White with some red. Here's the Deaf rugby highlights.
We were formerly known as Northern Zone Deaf Rugby Football Union, but because of confusion between the New Zealand Deaf Rugby Football Union, both abbreviated to NZDRU, Northern Zone changed their name to Northern Marlins.
We compete in the Annual New Zealand Rugby Football Championship, which traditionally has been held during Easter Weekend. Other teams competing at the National Championships are Central Zone Deaf Rugby Football Union and the Southern Zone Deaf Rugby Football Union. There is a friendly rivalry between the three teams that spans many years.
The first of a 3 part series about the Marlins; a group of rugby mad Kiwi blokes who all happen to be Deaf.
Part 2 of a 3 part series. Leading into the biggest competition of the year, we get to know more about some of the players in the Marlins, Aucklands Deaf Rugby team; Opeti the family man, Talia the bodybuilder, Sailusi who wants a job and David who is a first-time dad.
The final installment of out 3 part series with Aucklands Deaf rugby side, the Marlins. We've followed the guys on and off the field, now we're at the biggest rugby game of the season: it's time to contest the coveted National Shield.
Keep the fans closer to the team and players.

Ever been disappointed that the shows on TV channels are always too dramatic and overhyped when they are showing India? Have you ever been curious about the true characteristics of India? Do you want to see the true part of India that anyone would see themselves as they travel through India? Do you have friends who wonder about all of what you have already seen as a traveler in India and will, finally, able to say, “That’s what I am talking about!”?

Nyle DiMarco Wants To Empower Others Who Are Deaf
Deaf News: 'Dancing with the Stars' winner wants to empower others who are Deaf in the United States and the world.
When Nyle DiMarco was asked to join season 22 of "Dancing with the Stars," he almost turned down the opportunity.
"I'd never danced in my whole entire life," DiMarco says. "If I failed in the first week that means millions of people would view Deaf people as people that can't dance."
But the Deaf model and actor decided to take on the challenge.
During a rehearsal, professional dance partner Peta Murgatroyd cranked the music up so DiMarco could feel the vibrations.
"When we danced, it really just threw me off," he says. "I told Peta I've always been Deaf. I'm not used to sound, so I think it's better if we dance without the sound. And after that we did better."
Not only did they do better, they won the competition on May 24.
"We ended on a good note," he says with a smile.
DiMarco was born in Queens, New York.
"We have over 25 Deaf individuals in my family," he explains. "It is genetic, but there's only 10% of Deaf people that actually come from Deaf families."
His twin brother Nico and older brother Neal are Deaf, as are his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.
"I really consider myself fortunate having that communication access," the 27-year-old says. "My whole family knows American Sign Language."
Because of that, growing up Deaf wasn't an issue. He credits his mom Donna for helping him integrate into the hearing world.
"My mom did a great job because ever since I was born she would put me into any type of sporting activity with hearing teams," he says. "My mom would often send me out to play with the neighbors, so I felt like I had the best of both worlds."
DiMarco went on to graduate with a degree in mathematics from Gallaudet University, a private university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Washington, D.C.
"In middle school, I had the best math teacher I've ever had, and he was Deaf...and I felt inspired by him," he recalls. "I knew from then on that I wanted to be a math teacher."
But his life took a different turn when Hollywood came calling.
The producers of the TV drama ‘Switched at Birth’ approached him on social media to play a Deaf character on the show.
Then "America's Next Top Model" producers invited him to audition for season 22, after discovering him on Instagram.
But being on the modeling reality show wasn't easy.
"I had to live with the models in one big house for two months, 24 hours a day. Only a few of them actually learned how to sign ... I couldn't really communicate with anybody and I felt isolated," he remembers. "I just remained optimistic and I was like, 'I'm gonna win this show.'"
And he did.
"I'm very visual and through those visual cues, I was able to absorb it really fast," he says.
The win led DiMarco to a modeling contract.
"All within one year, my life just completely flipped for the better."
Now he wants to put his celebrity to good use. He recently founded the Nyle DiMarco Foundation to help people in the Deaf community gain access to American Sign Language.
"There's 70 million Deaf people in this world and only 2% of them have access to education in sign language," he says. "We're talking about millions of Deaf kids without language, without education."
DiMarco wants to change that.
"What people don't realize is we have our own beautiful culture. To Deaf kids, they should always find the ability in a disability ... if you do then you will do great things in life."

ET News: 'DWTS' Nyle DiMarco & Peta Murgatroyd
WATCH: 'DWTS' Peta Murgatroyd talks overcoming challenges with partner Nyle DiMarco: 'I've never trained with a Deaf person before'
LOS ANGELES -- Entertainment Tonight spoke with both the dancing pro and her Dancing with the Stars partner at the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday, where Peta Murgatroyd admitted that working with Nyle DiMarco is a very different experience for her.
"I've never trained with a Deaf person before, so it's a whole new ball game for me," she said. "Being a teacher, I have to really find out different teaching methods to be able to overcome this, and so far we're going really well."
One person who doesn't seem nervous at all is the America's Next Top Model winner. In fact, DiMarco is excited about how quickly he's learning to dance.
"Actually, my dancing feet are pretty good," he told ET via his interpreter on the orange carpet. "I'm pretty surprised and pretty impressed, because I've never danced before. I also have a great teacher!"
"It's not exactly what I expected," the 26-year-old model added. "I thought that I would struggle a lot and it would be frustrating, but actually, it's going really well."
The dancing duo revealed that they will have to cha cha "straight out of the gate," and the ballroom pro says their take on it is "fast, sexy, fun, high energy!"
ET also caught up with the pair on Wednesday at Planet Hollywood in New York City, where DiMarco revealed Murgatroyd has already helped him boost his confidence on the dance floor.
"The first day that we met, right before she came in, of course I've never danced ever. So that's what I was nervous about," he shared. "I didn't want to look bad on the first day of rehearsals. Now I'm not nervous at all. All thanks to her."
Murgatroyd echoed his statements, praising DiMarco for his hard work and dedication in rehearsals.
"He's doing amazingly well. Part [of that] is just his amazing work ethic," she gushed. "He literally doesn't sit down. Usually people will sit down every five minutes, but he works constantly throughout the four hours that we have."
"He's just so visually aware," she added. "Probably doubly as visually aware as anyone else because he doesn't have hearing. He picks up the steps very quickly, and its very surprising. At first I was really nervous, too. I didn't know how it was going to go. I wanted to be clear, I wanted to make sure that I could be the best teacher possible."
If the pair does win season 22, it will be the second time Murgatroyd has won DWTS. She and NFL star Donald Driver took home the mirror ball trophy during season 14.
DiMarco is joined in the competition by an all-star cast that includes Jodie Sweetin, Mischa Barton, Ginger Zee and Super Bowl 50 MVP, Von Miller.
Miller is paired with pro Witney Carson, who ET also caught up with at the KCAs. The newylwed dished on how the NFL pro was shaping up in the ballroom.
"He's picking up things so quick. He's great on choreography. He's an amazing student," she gushed. "I love that because I get to boss a big football player around... Read more on ET.

WATCH [CC] - A contestant won't be able to hear music on 'Dancing with the Stars' on the ABC TV series recap.
LOS ANGELES -- Nyle DiMarco's Dancing with the Stars partner Peta Murgatroyd is learning American Sign Language, perhaps you know Nyle DiMarco. He's the latest winner of "America's Next Top Model," an actor and Deaf advocate. Now, Nyle is breaking more barriers.
Aside from making American Sign Language education steamier, he'll be the first fully Deaf male contestant on "Dancing With The Stars." DWTS season 22 debuts Monday, March 21 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
"I haven't danced at all growing up. So, we'll see what happens," DiMarco signed.
"How do you choreograph when he can't hear the music?" George Stephanopoulos asked.
"Honestly, it's more visual. It's more of a challenge for me this season, but it's a great one," Peta Murgatroyd answered. Good thing DiMarco is no stranger to challenges.
"Becoming the spokesperson for the Deaf community, and they need me. And it's a burden sometimes, but I'm willing to take that burden and change the world's perspective on Deaf people," DiMarco said.

Deaf Customer Upset With McDonalds Drive-Thru
Deaf customer who is upset with McDonald's over treatment in Nebraska.
COLUMBUS, NEB -- A clash between a customer and the company: the video captured at a Columbus, Nebraska drive-through went viral recently.
Just two hours into the New Year, Jonathan Ramos arrived at the McDonald's drive-through window. His frustration in trying to place an order is evident in the use of his car horn, something, he himself, doesn't hear. It struck a nerve with one of the employees.
Related: Drive-Thru McDonalds Discrimination Deaf Driver
Video captured an employee’s response: "You can leave or I'm going to call police. Do you get that one?"
Ramos has been in Columbus for less than a year and has ordered at the McDonald’s before. He’s Deaf. Chicken pox took his hearing when he was a little boy. He doesn't read lips.
After exchanging texts and emails, WOWT 6 News met with Ramos outside the restaurant. We used a legal pad to write down any follow-up questions and answers during the interview.
He said he wanted to order a #9 - 3 or 5 piece Chicken Selects. He explained he usually types the information on his phone and then shows the order to the employee.
Because of his disability, he felt the workers were ignoring him by leaving the window.
After this exchange, Ramos said the employees need a serious lesson in dealing with hearing- impaired customers.
The owners of this McDonald's told WOWT it was a matter of misunderstanding and miscommunication. They said that earlier in the video when workers left the window on New Year's Day, they weren't discriminating against Jonathan, but getting a pen and paper to get the order.
From Jonathan Ramos' cellphone video, workers wrote this note: "You need to leave or we will call the police."
Employees did call police, saying that he refused to move forward in the drive through.
The owners tell WOWT 6 News that his minute-long video is only part of the story; that their own driver-though security cameras paint a different picture of Ramos disrupting a busy drive-through by honking his horn for nine minutes before turning his own video recorder on. Ramos disputes that account.
When asked if he thought it was all a misunderstanding, Ramos shrugged his shoulders. Ramos went on to explain that there’s no excuse for how he was treated. He plans to sue for discrimination.
I, Jonathan, am he declared sue to McDonald's Columbus, Nebraska.
For the restaurant's part, owners admit tempers flared but that neither side communicated well. They said Deaf customers usually bypass the speaker and go straight to the window to hand them a piece of paper with the order.
After the incident, the McDonald’s now keeps a pad and pen near the drive-through window in order to better communicate with the Deaf community.
Ramos hopes he's opened some eyes for every worker when it comes to dealing with those with a disability. He wishes more drive-through restaurants would add cameras near the ordering speaker so the Deaf community could easier communicate with the employees.
The McDonald's owners in Columbus say Jonathan Ramos is welcome at the restaurant any time.

Deaf Waiter Sees 'World Of New Possibilities'
Deaf News: Although Noah Wimberly has proven himself to be a skillful waiter, he plans to retire soon from the food service industry.
LAFAYETTE, LA -- Read on to learn more about his drive and the next adventure on the horizon. Those who work closest with Noah Wimberly at Social Southern Table & Bar say that he is highly competitive, able to communicate better than most and has more personality in his little finger than most people have in their entire bodies.
Customers of the Lafayette restaurant request Wimberly as their server more than any other. They say it is Wimberly’s attentive service that impresses them. It is his smile they remember long after the meal. They call him brave, an inspiration.
Although Wimberly was born Deaf, he sees nothing brave about working hard to earn money, attend college and achieve independence. He’s just living his life the best way he knows how.
Jody Ferguson, a partner of Social Southern Table & Bar and the former franchise owner for Acadiana’s Casa Ole locations, remembers well when his manager of the Opelousas Casa Ole location suggested Wimberly, now 28, try his hand at waiting tables.
He told Ferguson that Wimberly, who was about 19 at the time, had worked every other position beginning as a busboy and dishwasher and working his way up to a line cook and even temporary head chef. He first worked at the Lafayette location of Casa Ole, then helped to open the Opelousas location.
“I’ve got to be honest,” Ferguson said. “I was very hesitant. I was very nervous. I didn’t want to set him up for failure. I was nervous in how he would handle it and how others would respond to him.”
But Wimberly’s manager, Armando Perry, didn’t give up.
“I just believe there is nothing that Noah can’t do,” Perry said. “He’s one of those people that once he’s got something in his mind, he’s going to accomplish it. I was just certain that he would just get out there and do well. Oddly enough, I had no doubt that he would be a great server.” ...

Growing Deaf-Owned Businesses In Austin
WATCH: Deaf News - In Austin a top city for Deaf-Owned businesses.
AUSTIN, Texas -- The number of Deaf-owned businesses in the country is growing, and Austin is leading the pack.
Convo, a Deaf-owned telecommunications provider, reports there are more than 200 Deaf-owned businesses in the country, and counting. In the Austin-area there are 30 Deaf-owned businesses.
One of them is Silent Automotive, an auto shop that provides services to both Deaf and Hearing customers. The owners pride themselves on integrity, honesty and quality of service.
“Sound is caused by vibrations, sound doesn’t come out of its own. So we go to the car and feel the vibrations,” said part-owner, Joel DeChristofaro. “We have to be hands on and find exactly where the sound is coming from. Does take a little more time I assume, but I feel it gives us a clearer picture of what happens with the car.” Danny Blalock first started the business back in 2008.
“Because of communication. A lot of my [Deaf] friends have had bad experiences at auto shops, they felt they were getting ripped off,” said Blalock. “Our goal for our business is to keep growing; we’d like to hire more mechanics, Deaf mechanics, to give them opportunity to grow their resume.”
Blalock says the Deaf community continues to grow in Austin, Texas and is becoming more friendly for the Deaf community.
