HOLLYWOOD -- The YouTube series of star-studded cemeteries produced by Arthur Dark are becoming must-see tombstone tourism.

It was almost like Arthur Dark was born for this.

He’s got the voice, the passion, video editing chops, research skills, the look - and the vocabulary that lends to entertaining (and respectful) YouTube tours of notable graveyards around Los Angeles and the country.

"The curtain is drawn, the credits have rolled -- Still the stars burn ever brightly."

Filmmaker Arthur Dark and composer Giusppe Vasapolli take you on a journey of remembrance in their Famous Grave Tour videos.

Amassing over 100,000 subscribers since it’s debut in 2017, Dark’s Hollywood Graveyard channel is one of the most popular series of its type online.

We had a chance to ask him about our local cemeteries, the diversity of sizes and styles of celebrity gravestones, and what’s the deal with unmarked graves.

What got you interested in documenting graveyards on YouTube?

It was a combination of many things: combined interests in entertainment, Hollywood history and a dash of the macabre.

Initially, I just found visiting famous graves myself fascinating, being able to connect with and pay my respects to individuals whose work I knew and loved. And in connecting with individuals I already knew, I would be introduced to new ones along the way, introduced to them, and their work - movies, TV shows, music, writings, etc., opening me up to an as-of-yet untapped mine of entertainment. I was delving much deeper into the history of Hollywood and entertainment, and in doing so, broadening my own horizons, so to speak.

These were experiences I was sure others would enjoy, and appreciate, but it’s not always easy (or possible) to find famous graves. So I sought to find ways to make tombstone tourism more accessible, make it less intimidating, easier to find the graves of these notable individuals, or if not possible to visit them in person, allow audiences to visit them “virtually” through video tours. CRTC Launches Canada Video Relay Service

Deaf News: CRTC press releases "Video Relay Service: A new communications era in Canada."

OTTAWA - GATINEAU -- Today on September, 28, 2016 the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) joins the Canadian Administrator of the Video Relay Service (VRS) to launch this service during an event at the Museum of History, in the National Capital Region, along with the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities.

The launch of the VRS opens a new communications era in Canada that will simplify communications between Canadians who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Speech Impaired and other Canadians, and vice versa.

This made-for-Canada service enhances the ability of Canadian’s whose first language is American Sign Language (ASL) or Langue des Signes Québécoise (LSQ) to participate fully in Canada’s communication system, and in Canadian society more broadly.

In October 2013, the CRTC held one of the most accessible public hearings in its history, during which Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and Speech-Impaired Canadians spoke about how video relay service would make an important difference in their lives - as seen on this video in ASL with closed captions.

Quick Facts - It is estimated that there will be some 20,000 users of the Video Relay Service.

There is no charge to use the Video Relay Service. However, the service requires high-speed Internet access and an Internet-enabled device (e.g. a computer, smartphone, or tablet) that supports videoconferencing.

People who want to use the service can contact SRV Canada VRS to register.

The administrator, who is independent of the CRTC, manages the Video Relay Service and ensures its proper operation.

Gallaudet Presidential Inauguration Celebration

Gallaudet University celebrates the first Deaf woman to serve as its president in the United States history.

WASHINGTON, DC -- USA Today: About two weeks after she arrived on the campus of Gallaudet University last January, Roberta Cordano learned how the place works: The blizzard known as “Snowzilla” hit, knocking out power to much of the campus.

Cordano, the school’s incoming president, invited 13 families to stay in her on-campus house overnight, where the next morning they produced a huge communal meal. When students realized that a school-issued emergency message didn’t include an American Sign Language (ASL) version, they produced one themselves, complete with captions.

“They really set the gold standard for establishing bilingual communication,” Cordano said. “There is no other place that I have experienced that would just delve into something, take care of things, figure it out.”

On Friday, Cordano’s appointment becomes official as Gallaudet, the world's only liberal arts university for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, inaugurates her as its first Deaf female president.

The move follows decades of political upheaval at the school, where over the past 30 years students have fought to give Deaf educators and students more control.

Established during the Lincoln administration in 1864, Gallaudet didn’t get its first Deaf president until the Reagan administration, 124 years later, in 1988 and only after raucous protests closed down the campus. The “Deaf President Now” protests, stretching over eight days, forced Gallaudet's board to name its first Deaf president, I. King Jordan, who served for 18 years.

In 2006, more protests erupted after the board named Provost Jane Fernandes to replace Jordan. As in 1988, students blocked the main gates of the campus, and “Deaf President Now” morphed into “Better President Now.” Though all three finalists in 2006 were Deaf, students feared that Fernandes might not be their strongest advocate. Some wanted a candidate who had grown up Deaf and relied solely on ASL - Fernandes had learned to sign when she was young and could communicate well by speaking or by signing, The Washington Post reported at the time. The board eventually named Robert Davila to replace Jordan.

The power struggles are actually the natural result of the linguistic issues the Deaf community has experienced for more than a century, Cordano said.

“It took 100 years here in the (United) States until American Sign Language was recognized as a language, just like English, having its own grammatical structure, its own rules, all the linguistic markers you would find in any other language,” she said. “What’s fascinating is that it took 100 years for us to change the perspective from, ‘Oh, it’s just a bunch of gestures,’ to actually seeing it’s a legitimate language.”

From there, she said, it was a short step to political activism and a push for self-determination. Understanding Deaf Culture, she said, made outsiders realize that Deaf people have something worth protecting: “If you have a language, then surely there must be a culture - there must be literature. And of course we realized the Deaf community has culture and literature and storytelling. And from there that’s been followed by the civil rights movement.” ... Read More at USA Today.

LINSAY: There are many interesting Deaf people and among them, I’d like to tell you about one person in particular -- Melville Ballard. He was born in Maine and since he was Deaf, there were no known educational institution for Deaf children nearby. When he was eleven years old, he was informed that there was a Deaf school in Hartford. He enrolled and after nine years, Ballard completed his education. The school asked him to become a teacher there. The Columbia Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Washington, D.C. asked him to teach there, Ballard accepted the offer and soon afterwards, the college for the Deaf was established. He decided to enroll there and after two years, he graduated. Afterwards, he went back to teaching and did so for over fifty years! While he was teaching, Ballard along with a few others, founded a newspaper for Deaf people. The paper was called The Silent World. Ballard was actually one of the participants at that conference in Milan, Italy in 1880. Oh, here's another interesting fact about Ballard -- Congressman James Garfield, who later became the President of the U.S., corresponded with the French Emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte III, who communicated in French. The Congressman needed somebody to help him with the translation so he used Ballard, who was fluent in English, French, and Latin, to help with the translations. With Ballard's help, Garfield was able maintain his communications with the French Emperor. So, that is what I wanted to share with you today.

LINSAY: Deaf people were faced with a dilemma that had raised concerns among them. It was generally known that Deaf people, upon the graduation from school, would acquire jobs and live at their respective places. However, the idea of Deaf people living far apart from their friends could have a negative impact on their intelligence. They needed to gather and discuss solutions. So in 1853, Deaf people in New England congregated in Vermont and decided to establish an organization. Subsequently, in 1854, Thomas Brown, who was in charge in developing the constitution for the newly formed group, and others gathered for a meeting in Henniker, New Hampshire. The meeting lasted for several days which formed the constitution and the name of the new organization the New England Gallaudet Association of the Deaf, the NEGAD. The purpose of the organization was to promote the intellectual growth among the Deaf people who lived in various places and to become a model for other states to follow. Eventually, other states had established their own state association which prompted the eventual establishment of the National Association of the Deaf, the NAD. All of that began with a group of people who were posed with a question that led to the national organization that made it possible for all Deaf to advance.

A Short Film About A Deaf Dancer

Chris Fonseca: "Dance is not an option, It's who I am" - A short film about a Deaf dancer.

LONDON, United Kingdom -- In collaboration with Smirnoff as part of their ‘We’re Open’ campaign, UK producer Donae’o recently teamed up with Deaf dancer Chris Fonseca and dance crew Plague for the video for his track ‘Mami No Like’, which drops next week.

As a precursor to that, it’s worth watching this short film about Chris’ processes as a Deaf dancer, as well as some of the issues he’s had to overcome to get to where he is today.

Chris’s aim is to teach members of the Deaf community that there are ways to enjoy music beyond just hearing it. As well as featuring in this video, he has teamed up with Smirnoff to host a Deaf dance workshop every last Friday of the month at Huskies dance studios.

A man sits at an old typewriter, the American flag is behind him. He types for a bit and then makes eye contact with the viewer.

LINSAY: Reading newspapers is one of the pastimes that Deaf people loved to do. The first official publication from the Deaf community was the American Annals for the Deaf that was widely circulated. Deaf people could follow what was happening in Deaf communities across the nation. Eventually, different schools for the Deaf would start their own paper; these papers shared opinions, discussions and stories. That prompted many Deaf people living in different areas to develop a sense of mutual cooperation which led up to the establishment of the National Association of the Deaf. These papers included entertaining stories, articles that started discussions on the issues that affected the schools of thought of the day, poems, and general news. A Deaf person in one place probably would read about the person they were familiar with in other area of America and so forth. The papers has greatly influenced the individuals within the Deaf community develop a sense of deep bond with each other.

Supreme Court Bar Welcomes Deaf Attorneys

WATCH [CC] - Deaf News: Chief Justice of the United States welcomes Deaf Lawyers into Supreme Court Bar.

WASHINGTON DC -- The Wall Street Journal: 12 Deaf and Hard of Hearing attorneys just made U.S. history. For the first time, Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday used a language other than English in the formal ceremony admitting attorneys to the Supreme Court Bar: American Sign Language.

A dozen lawyers from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bar Association took the oath of admission promising to conduct themselves “uprightly and according to the law” which the chief justice oversees before an argument session.

After their sponsor, John Stanton, a Justice Department attorney and member of the association, moved their admission, Chief Justice Roberts gave the traditional response in sign language: “Your motion is now granted.” He then repeated the phrase in English.

A Supreme Court spokeswoman, Kathy Arberg, said the chief justice learned to sign the phrase specifically for Tuesday’s ceremony.

“We are truly honored to be admitted to the Supreme Court Bar,” the association’s president, Anat Maytal, a litigation associate at Baker Hostetler, said in a statement. “Our admission sets a precedent that will hopefully encourage others with disabilities to pursue a legal career and view the legal profession as being open to diverse backgrounds.” SOURCE

Dubai Skyscraper Luxury Hotel Engulfed By Fire

WATCH [CC] - 63-story luxury hotel 'The Address Downtown Dubai' on fire near world's tallest building in New Year's Eve at Dubai.

DUBAI, UAE -- A huge fire engulfed a Dubai skyscraper on Thursday just hours before New Year's celebrations with a number of explosions heard in and around the building.

Firefighters battled a massive blaze that engulfed a luxury hotel in Dubai Thursday night while a spectacular New Year’s fireworks display lit up the night sky nearby.

Orange tentacles of flames engulfed a large section of the high-end The Address Downtown Hotel soon after the blaze began around 9:30 p.m. (12:30 p.m. ET). Hours later, dark plumes of smoke billowed from the building as the fire still appeared to be searing several stories.

Witnesses said they heard explosions as the fire raged. A source told CNN the fire broke out in a residence on the building’s 20th floor when the curtains caught on fire.

Jaqueline Hurtado, a CNN en Español correspondent, said she was at a restaurant in the area when she heard an explosion, “like a loud pop,” and thought the fireworks display may have started early.

Then she and others noticed flames at the hotel, and were soon evacuated from the area.

“That fire was big. The fire was just going so fast,” she said. “It just started burning real quick.”

At least 16 people were injured, the Dubai government’s media office said Thursday night on Twitter.

But the highly anticipated New Year’s Eve festivities in the United Arab Emirates’ most populous city including what was billed as one of the world’s largest fireworks displays went ahead as planned. Cheering crowds of onlookers watched as bursts of color filled the sky.

Just a few blocks away, the scene was dramatically different.

At the Address hotel, which describes itself as “the premier five-star hotel” in Dubai, flames appeared to be devouring growing portions of the high-rise, even as government officials said the blaze was largely contained.

Deaf & Blind Get Behind The Wheel

LODZ, Poland -- Motor-racing is not for the faint-hearted. But when you are Deaf and Blind, it takes on a different dimension.

All 19 drivers who took part in this unusual race on the tarmac of the Lodz Airport in central Poland earlier this month were hearing and visually impaired.

But like Helen Keller - the American author, activist and lecturer who was the first Deaf and Blind person to graduate from college - they are pushing the envelope of their disabilities.

Mateusz Kotnowski of Poland's Deaf and Blind Aid Society explained: “Of 19 participants, 12 had never driven a car before, while seven used to drive before they became disabled.

“Some are completely Deaf and Blind. Those who can still see or hear a little wear masks and helmets to ensure an equal playing field for all,” he said.

Each participant had to complete two timed laps of the circuit while under the watchful eye of a co-driver. First, though, they had two days of training to get a feel for the steering wheel.

Deaf Male Model - Introducing Nyle DiMarco

WATCH [ASL/CC] - America's Next Top Model's first ever Deaf contestant on why he refuses to let his disability hold him back.

LOS ANGELES -- A model who is set to become the first ever Deaf person to compete in hit reality series America's Next Top Model has revealed why he refuses to let his disability stop him from reaching the top of the fashion industry.

Nyle DiMarco, 25, is set to feature on the upcoming 22nd season of the hit CW series, which was created by supermodel Tyra Banks. But while some might believe he is at a disadvantage when compared with his co-stars, the Washington-based model insists that his disability actually makes him all the more unique.

'I strongly believe that being Deaf gives me a huge advantage because of my native language, American Sign Language' Nyle revealed to Washington Life.

'ASL requires the use of facial expressions and body language expressions. With the rules of ASL immersed into my soul, it helps to bring out stories when I'm modeling for a photo, and makes for an interesting character when I'm acting.'

And, perhaps unsurprisingly, the fact that Nyle is Deaf certainly isn't the first thing that people notice about the budding model, who was contacted by the producers of America's Next Top Model after they saw him guest-starring in hit sitcom ‘Switched at Birth’.

'The show found me through my accounts on social media and models.com, which is where I showcase my work,' Nyle explained.

'Honestly, America's Next Top Model wasn’t something that I had ever really thought about doing before but when I spoke with casting, I thought, “why not!” The rest is history.'

While Nyle is unable to reveal how the show, which he has been busy filming for a number of weeks now, has been going, he hopes that his appearance in the series, no matter how far he ends up going, will help to inspire other Deaf people to pursue their dreams... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Basketball Player Heads To Nationals

8-year-old basketball star Zeke Ortiz says being Deaf has no limits.

FREDERICK, MD -- Ask 8-year-old Zeke Ortiz what he wants to be when he grows up, and he'll answer without hesitation - a pro basketball player.

Zeke has been playing since he was a 2-year-old, but he decided earlier this year it was time to step up his game. That meant leaving his YMCA league to join a more competitive team - the Playmakers.

"The team I'm with now is a challenge," Zeke said. "It's tough for me." But it wasn't the skill set or the level of competition that was the biggest hurdle in making the change for Zeke. It was the fact that none of his new teammates knew how to sign.

Zeke, his 10-year-old brother Zion, their parents, grandparents and nine cousins are all Deaf - and this was Zeke's first time playing a sport with hearing teammates.

"He's lucky that he was born into a family of Deaf people and to have Deaf parents, so he'd had full access to communication since birth," his mom, Jennifer Yost Ortiz, said.

Zeke, who attends a Deaf school, had always been able to communicate with his family and peers. When he joined the Playmakers, his parents say that for the first time, he felt lost.

"Everybody was talking," Zeke said. "I didn't know what they were saying or what to do. Nobody was interpreting for me."

"At the very beginning, the first practice, Zeke kept looking at me saying, 'I don't understand,' Ortiz said. "And we said, 'It's okay, just watch.'"

Without an interpreter, it was like a guessing game. Zeke couldn't do the little things, like hear a whistle blow or a call being made.

A Deaf teenager enters a specialized boarding school where, to survive, he becomes part of a wild organization the tribe. His love for one of the concubines will unwillingly lead him to break all the unwritten rules within the Tribe's hierarchy.

'The Tribe' documentary film is a 2014 Ukrainian drama film directed by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy. The film is set in a boarding school for Deaf children, where a new arrival is drawn into an institutional system of organised crime, involving robbery and prostitution. He crosses a dangerous line when he falls for one of the girls to whom he's assigned as pimp. The film is entirely in Ukrainian Sign Language with no subtitles.

It won the Nespresso Grand Prize, as well as the France 4 Visionary Award and the Gan Foundation Support for Distribution Award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival's International Critics' Week section.
