The funeral dancing pallbearers are one of the unique tradition went viral, the pallbearers are at the centre of a global internet sensation.

Let's find out the history and origin of the Dancing Pallbearers also known as Dancing Coffin and the Coffin Dance.

The Ghanaian dancing pallbearers are led by Benjamin Aidoo, who started the group as a regular pallbearer service. Families are increasingly paying for their services to send their loved ones off in style. The dancing pallbearers first rose to prominence in 2017 when they were featured in a BBC News report.

Though the group initially gained worldwide attention though a BBC feature story in 2017, the footage became part of an Internet meme in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. BBC Africa's Sulley Lansah met up with the leader of the troupe to get his reaction to his new-found fame.

In April 2020, the group became the subject of a darkly comedic internet meme when videos of people suffering various mishaps, followed by clips of the pallbearers dancing with coffins implicitly the victims of the preceding clips, were widely uploaded to Reddit, YouTube and TikTok.

Many uses of this meme are commonly associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which was ongoing when the meme became popular on social media.

Disturbing 'Momo Challenge' Hoax Spreads

Disturbing and creepy, the ‘Momo Challenge’ isn’t a viral danger to children online, but it sure is viral.

People across the world are spreading awareness about 'Momo Challenge'.

If you’re a parent of a young child, chances are that someone on Facebook has sent you an alarming post about the “Momo challenge,” a game illustrated by a disturbing photograph of a woman, in which participants are blackmailed into completing increasingly dangerous tasks.

Maybe that post says that Momo is the latest “trend.”

Momo was perfectly tuned to set off alarms in the mind of any parent: There’s something online that you don’t know about, and it’s about to kill or traumatize your child. Just one problem: There’s little evidence to confirm that the Momo challenge is real. Although multiple deaths are often attributed to the challenge in warnings about it, none has been confirmed.

The panic over Momo followed a familiar pattern established by other supposedly viral “challenges” - the condom challenge and Tide pod challenge, for example that caused a lot of hand-wringing but few, if any, documented injuries.

Nonverbal Boy Is Best Friends With His Deaf Dog

WATCH: 6-year-old nonverbal boy is best friends with his 3-year-old adopted Ellie the Deaf dog hit the Internet.

ORLANDO, FL -- A non-verbal 6-year-old in Florida and a Deaf dog have become the best of friends.

Connor Guillet was adopted by Brandi Guillet when he was just 4 weeks old, and although he was born addicted to drugs and her family knew he would have special needs, they proceeded.

“He needed a family and we wanted a family -- it was a match made in heaven," Brandi told insideEdition.com. "I always say he is our wish come true."

When Brandi went to an event for Boxer dogs who needed homes a few weeks ago, she met 3-year-old Ellie, who is Deaf, and decided to take her home.

“We never thought about Deaf Dogs until her,” Brandi said. “When Jon, who works at the rescue, showed me that Ellie responds to sign I had a lightbulb go off immediately.”

Connor communicates through sign language and as soon as the two met Brandi says she let Connor go up to her and touch and kiss her.

"To think that Connor can sign to her and actually communicate with her made my heart melt. We met her... that was it," Brandi said.

The two have been inseparable since.

They family was initially only planning on fostering Ellie but after her and Connor hit it off, they decided to adopt her.

“Boxers are known to be great with kids but there is something definitely special about Ellie,” Brandi said. “When Connor has tantrums she will stand over him as if to comfort him. When he is upset he will immediately go to her for comfort. It warms my heart like nothing else. He has a true friend in Ellie”

Mysterious Ancient 'Pyramid' Found In Antarctica

Google Earth images of Antarctica have revealed what look like pyramids, lost civilisations to aliens?

Heavy com share an article: Tonight, Ancient Aliens’ premiere episode for the new season is scheduled to be about “Pyramids of Antarctica.” But are there really any pyramids in this snowy, icy world? Unfortunately, rumors that circulated several years ago were later debunked. Will Ancient Aliens add any new information to the mix?

Here’s what you need to know.

Several years ago, the Internet was filled with stories about explorers who found pyramids in Antarctica. The most frequently repeated story was tracked down as originating from a website called Voice of Russia, later renamed Sputnik News. You can read one of the first stories, from 2013, here.

According to the rumors, a team of European and American scientists had found three ancient pyramids, two which were 16 kilometers inland and one near the coast. But the details in the stories were always very sparse. Websites included pictures, such as this article, and a link to an article on ScienceRay, which purportedly included photos, was often posted (which no longer works.) The story traveled across the Internet, but it wasn’t verifiable. The names of the explorers weren’t shared and more details were never available.

Back in 2012, a discussion about the articles appeared on a Google message board here, where one poster noticed something interesting. He said the story had circulated for a very long time, but someone had recently “republished” the story with three images. He noted that the sources of the images, which appeared with the story, were not of pyramids in Antarctica. One photo was from International Mountain Guides and one was from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. The third, according to another submitter, may have been of the Schatz Ridge near Sentinel Range.

Some theorize that the photos used are likely of “glacial horns,” such as the Matterhorn which is on the border between Switzerland and Italy in Europe.

Those who want to believe in the pyramid theory point to the idea that Antarctica may not have always been covered in ice. They sometimes mention the ancient Piri Reis map and the theory that it shows the coastline without ice. The Piri Reis map is a world map made in 1513 based on military intelligence from the Ottoman admiral Piri Reis. About 1/3 of the map still survives. Some claim that it shows prehistoric exploration of Antarctica, along with notes that the climate was warm. But other experts dispute this claim and say that it either depicts a South American coast in that region or is just a guess and not based on genuine knowledge. Bad Archaeology addressed the idea of ancient civilizations in Antarctica back in 2007.

Most scientists disagree with the idea that Antarctica has pyramids or lost civilizations. But you’ll likely still find romantics who point to the Piri Reis map and other findings and insist that what is deemed impossible might not be.

The sinister skull image of Hurricane Matthew spooks the Internet.

WASHINGTON -- Hurricane Matthew is a monster storm. Now it has a monster image to match. A sinister image of Hurricane Matthew, resembling a human skull, has lit up the Internet. The creepy satellite photo was posted Tuesday by Weather Channel senior meteorologist Stu Ostro as the hurricane made landfall in Haiti.

The image shows the hurricane through an infrared camera lens. It's been tweaked to show the storm in apocalyptic colors that accentuate the hurricane's eye and make its teeth look like the comic book character Ghost Rider or the Grinch, some Twitter users suggested.

It's creepy, but in a nutshell, CNN meteorologist Judson Jones explains that "basically, scientists use color tables to identify the strongest part of the storm."

In the viral Twitter post, gray, black and red were chosen. Paul Meyer, an atmospheric scientist at NASA's Earth Science Office, told CNN that the skull's "teeth" are cold convective clouds.

CRTC Launches Canada Video Relay Service

Deaf News: CRTC press releases "Video Relay Service: A new communications era in Canada."

OTTAWA - GATINEAU -- Today on September, 28, 2016 the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) joins the Canadian Administrator of the Video Relay Service (VRS) to launch this service during an event at the Museum of History, in the National Capital Region, along with the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities.

The launch of the VRS opens a new communications era in Canada that will simplify communications between Canadians who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Speech Impaired and other Canadians, and vice versa.

This made-for-Canada service enhances the ability of Canadian’s whose first language is American Sign Language (ASL) or Langue des Signes Québécoise (LSQ) to participate fully in Canada’s communication system, and in Canadian society more broadly.

In October 2013, the CRTC held one of the most accessible public hearings in its history, during which Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and Speech-Impaired Canadians spoke about how video relay service would make an important difference in their lives - as seen on this video in ASL with closed captions.

Quick Facts - It is estimated that there will be some 20,000 users of the Video Relay Service.

There is no charge to use the Video Relay Service. However, the service requires high-speed Internet access and an Internet-enabled device (e.g. a computer, smartphone, or tablet) that supports videoconferencing.

People who want to use the service can contact SRV Canada VRS to register.

The administrator, who is independent of the CRTC, manages the Video Relay Service and ensures its proper operation.

Comcast Data Caps Make Life For Deaf Difficult

Deaf News: Comcast's data usage caps may be a hindrance to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

PHILADELPHIA -- It’s hard to find a Comcast Internet customer who doesn’t loathe the idea of the company’s forthcoming data usage limits, but usage caps may prove particularly painful to one group: the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Comcast’s data usage caps for its Internet customers will expand to eight more cities Tuesday. The caps limit users to 300GB of data monthly, with the alternative of facing fines or paying a steeper rate to get unlimited access.

And unlimited access is especially crucial for many in the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community who use Video Relay Service, or VRS, to conduct phone calls. The calls are facilitated using a sign language interpreter on the other end - and that requires an Internet video feed.

“It’s really important to the Deaf community because it provides visual communication,” said Dan Hoffman, the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies program coordinator for Utah Valley University.

VRS does not use that much data - 5-10 megabits per second, according to Sorenson VRS, one of the leading VRS companies - but that adds up when you're also using your connection for normal browsing.

“Hearing people can call using their phones any time they want to…they don’t have any cap like that,” said Hoffman, who is Deaf and also a Comcast customer.

For Hoffman and others in the Deaf community, equal access means that if hearing people can communicate without time limits using telephones, that the Deaf community ought to be able to also. He said rather than pay Comcast's steeper rates for unlimited use, many Deaf people would simply transfer services if a cap were in place.

The Federal Communications Commission does have protections in place to ensure the adequate provision of telecommunications services to the Deaf community, but from a cursory read, it is unclear if capping VRS use is an Americans with Disabilities Act violation. The communications agency was not able to comment on the story.

“I Love You” is one sign expressed in American Sign Language (ASL) and it has moved into the mainstream with wider universal understanding and acceptance among those who sign and those who do not (yet). Up until now, the best folks can do to recreate it by symbol is _\,,/ and that really doesn't do the meaning justice.

The "I Love You" sign is an informal way of expressing a number of positive emotions, ranging from general esteem and admiration to love for the recipient of the sign. Of course, the “I Love You” handshape emoji would be available in all skin tones.

Internet Slang Meets American Sign Language

How do you sign "new" words? The Deaf community works as a network, collectively brainstorming new sign language term over the web, until dominant emerge.

Hope and Fears: As language evolves, the powers that regulate language tend to shift. Just look at the Oxford English Dictionary, who added terms like “duck face,” “lolcat,” and “hawt” to their prestigious lexicon this past December. For the English-speaking world, these additions are anywhere from ridiculous to annoying but at the end of the day, the terms are accepted and agreed upon.

But how do these new, internet-laden turns of phrase enter the sign language community? Was there a way of expressing “selfie” in ASL, was there a sign for “photobomb?” Our simplistic question turned into a larger conversation about the nature of communication.

We turned to Bill Vicars, the president and owner of an organization called Lifeprint, a company who educates through “technology-enhanced delivery of ASL Instruction, excursion-based instruction (trips to amusement parks), and extended-immersion-based program coordination (intense two-week residencies).”

Vicars himself is Deaf/HH, which means he is hard of hearing and culturally Deaf as he has immersed himself in the Deaf community. “In addition to my co workers, the majority of my friends are Deaf… my wife is Deaf,” Vicars explains. (Capitalizing ‘Deaf’ refers to the Deaf community, as noted by Carol Padden and Tom Humphries, in Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture (1988), “We use the lowercase deaf when referring to the audiological condition of not hearing, and the uppercase Deaf when referring to a particular group of deaf people who share a language - American Sign Language and a culture.”

CRTC Approves Video Relay Service In Canada

CRTC announces the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people across Canada will have access to new video relay service.

OTTAWA, Ontario -- The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission CRTC announced on April 22, 2014, that video relay services (VRS) will now be available in Canada for Deaf people who communicate in American Sign Language ASL and Langue des signes québécoise LSQ.

Video relay services enable callers to use the services of a sign language interpreter through the Internet. The interpreter interprets spoken English into sign for the deaf caller, and voices into English the signs of the Deaf caller.

“Many Canadians who are Deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired learn American Sign Language or Langue des signes québécoise early in life," Peter Menzies, Vice-Chairman of Telecommunications, and Chairman of the hearing panel.

"In many cases, neither English nor French is their first language. Video relay service will make it possible for them to communicate in sign language with ease, whether it’s to make a doctor’s appointment, speak to a friend or make any other type of call. At the same time, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that this service is introduced in an efficient manner and as quickly as possible.”

Users will require their own high-speed Internet service and a device connected to the Internet such as a smartphone, tablet, computer, or videophone. Additional services such as call display and voicemail will be billed at rates similar to those charged by other service providers.

An independent administrator will be created to supervise the implementation and provision of video relay services and ensure that the views of users are taken into account during the decision-making process. The CRTC will review the video relay service three years after it has been launched to determine whether the service is efficiently meeting the needs of Canadians.

The CRTC is requiring that VRS become available to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing or speech impaired as early as the fall of 2015. The VRS service is offered at no charge, but users must sign up to use it.
