Super Bowl LIII Deaf National Anthem Signer

This sign language performance was cut from the Super Bowl broadcast. It’s now been viewed online more than 1 million times.

ATLANTA, Georgia -- Super Bowl LIII - Mercedes-Benz Stadium: The rousing patriotic songs “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” performed before Sunday’s Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, Georgia were cheered by the pumped-up crowd in the stadium and seen in homes around the world.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

But what the television audience did not see was another performance happening right next to the singers on the field - D.C. resident Aarron Loggins doing a theatrical, and quickly viral, sign-language interpretation of the songs.

A video of his performance, posted by the National Association of the Deaf on Facebook, has been viewed more than 1 million times and shared by more than 23,000 people. Many of them gushed over Loggins, who is Deaf.

Loggins, 34 - a dancer, performer and graduate of Gallaudet University - was selected to do an American Sign Language performance of the two songs by the National Football League and the National Association of the Deaf. His performance included sweeping gestures and rhythmic swaying as Gladys Knight belted out “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the sister duo Chloe X Halle gave a soulful, harmonized rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

Some people on social media were not happy that Loggins’s act was cut out of prime time. He was shown for a flash at the end of “America the Beautiful.”

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Loggins, who was named Mister Deaf International in 2014, said he was proud of how he performed.

He said that although he is Deaf, he was able to synchronize his performance with the singers by using an interpreter who gave him cues about whether the singers drew out certain words in the songs. He also said there was a rehearsal with the singers that helped him prepare.

“I rehearsed and came fully prepared to give my best rendition using all of my theatrical and emotional skills,” Loggins said in an email interview with The Washington Post.

He added: “I am grateful that my delivery has done honor to ASL and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.”

Loggins called the experience of performing at the Super Bowl “amazing," and said that he hopes that the Super Bowl sign-language performances next year will be seen more fully on television, not only in the stadium and on social media.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

“The community has shown that they want to see ASL,” he said. “Hopefully, future broadcasts will show more of the ASL performance.”

CBS did not respond to several emails and a phone call requesting comment on the broadcast.

Loggins, who is originally from Illinois, said he is the only Deaf person in his family. He started to sign when he was 3 and said he learned to face adversity at an early age. When he was a child, he was told he would never be able to hold a job because he can’t hear. Now, in addition to being a performer, he is an advocate for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

“I take all such negativity and work hard to change it into positivity by proving myself and proving those naysayers wrong,” he said. “My motto is ‘Believe in yourself,’ which I have used as a mantra in my activism with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children to encourage them to have ambitious goals and strive for them.”

Deaf Immigrant Awarded $250K Settlement

Deaf Man receives $250K settlement after being jailed with no access to interpreter in Virginia.

ARLINGTON, Virginia -- NBC4 Washington: A Deaf man will receive a $250,000 settlement from the Arlington County Sheriff's Office after it failed to provide a sign language interpreter for him while he was jailed, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.

The man, Abreham Zemedagegehu, has said he spent part of his six-week stay at the Arlington County Detention Facility in 2014 unaware of the charges against him. The Justice Department launched an investigation into Zemedagegehu's claim last year.

NBC News covered a story about Abreham Zemedagegehu and his experience in jail without an interpreter.

"I felt like I was losing my mind," Zemedagegehu said through an interpreter in an interview at his lawyer's office. "I thought Virginia would give me an interpreter and they said no. That's why I felt lost."

Zemedagegehu also said the jail failed provide a communications device to help him communicate with his lawyer and performed medical procedures on him without explaining them or getting his consent.

A native of Ethiopia, he can communicate in American Sign Language but is largely unable to communicate in written English.

Zemedagegehu sued the sheriff's office in federal court, saying his treatment failed to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Among the concerns raised in his lawsuit was the jail's reliance on teletypewriter devices to allow Deaf inmates to communicate with people outside the jail. The sheriff's office has defended its use of the TTY machine, but Zemedagegehu's lawsuit said the device is useless for someone who can't read English and obsolete because videophones are now used predominantly in the Deaf community.

Zemedagegehu's ordeal began Feb. 2, 2014, when he was arrested after being accused of stealing another man's iPad. He said he pleaded guilty to the charge because a plea bargain offered him a sentence of time served. Later, though, the man who accused him of the theft said he'd found the device and rescinded his accusation.

Under the settlement, the sheriff's office will pay $250,000 to Zemedagegehu, and must take steps to comply with the ADA. This includes appointing an ADA coordinator, providing ADA training to its staff, and ensuring that auxiliary aids and services are provided. The Justice Department said the sheriff's office has taken several steps to improve its ADA compliance even before finalizing the settlement agreement.

"People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing must be able to communicate clearly with law enforcement officials," said Tracy Doherty-McCormick, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, in a statement Friday. "Through this settlement agreement, the Arlington County Sheriff has taken important steps to ensure that the operations of the Arlington County Detention Facility are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act."

DGM and NAD - Partners For Deaf Rights

Deaf Grassroots Movement and National Association of the Deaf as the partners for Deaf Rights in the United States.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Get outside and find a street corner on October 20th! Fight for our rights for access, education, and employment. Last week, the Deaf Grassroots Movement (DGM) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) met via videoconference.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

We talked about how we can work together, build a relationship between DGM and NAD, and identify our plans for the future. The primary focus of our discussion was about October 20th. On that day, in 85 cities across America, people will stand at a street corner with signages to bring attention to three important issues for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community: access, education, and employment.

Howard - DGM and the NAD work together and support each other. Allow me to explain how. The NAD has always met with the federal government to discuss various issues including education, employment, and access. While such discussions are productive, sometimes we get nowhere. Thanks to DGM’s movement and making noise about our needs, the federal government reached out the NAD recognizing the their actions. This helps the NAD continue the dialogue we want to have with the federal government. I am very appreciative of the work DGM has done to support the rights of deaf and hard of hearing people.

So, October 20th is a very important day! You can get involved by looking for the DGM Facebook page in your state, and find out details about October 20th. You can join for an hour, a few hours, or all day! Your time contributed to this movement will have an impact across the country! This movement will occur every now and then, not just October 20th, so we can remain visible and bring attention to the community including the politicians. We want them to know that we are still here!

Deaf History THAT - "Who Was Melville Ballard"

A short film from NAD in the Deaf History THAT: "Who Was Melville Ballard" with Linsay Darnall, Jr.

SILVER SPRING, Maryland -- The National Association of the Deaf is excited to release the new video series, Deaf History That! In this brief episode, Linsay Darnall, Jr. introduces Melville Ballard and shares some interesting facts about him.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Video description and transcript:

A man sits on an antique sofa, in front of a window. A small transparent NAD logo appears on bottom right.

LINSAY: There are many interesting Deaf people and among them, I’d like to tell you about one person in particular -- Melville Ballard. He was born in Maine and since he was Deaf, there were no known educational institution for Deaf children nearby. When he was eleven years old, he was informed that there was a Deaf school in Hartford. He enrolled and after nine years, Ballard completed his education. The school asked him to become a teacher there. The Columbia Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Washington, D.C. asked him to teach there, Ballard accepted the offer and soon afterwards, the college for the Deaf was established. He decided to enroll there and after two years, he graduated. Afterwards, he went back to teaching and did so for over fifty years! While he was teaching, Ballard along with a few others, founded a newspaper for Deaf people. The paper was called The Silent World. Ballard was actually one of the participants at that conference in Milan, Italy in 1880. Oh, here's another interesting fact about Ballard -- Congressman James Garfield, who later became the President of the U.S., corresponded with the French Emperor Louis Napoleon Bonaparte III, who communicated in French. The Congressman needed somebody to help him with the translation so he used Ballard, who was fluent in English, French, and Latin, to help with the translations. With Ballard's help, Garfield was able maintain his communications with the French Emperor. So, that is what I wanted to share with you today.

Deaf Movie Fans Sues Celebration! Cinemas

Deaf News: Celebration! Cinemas sued for failing to accommodate Deaf, Hard of Hearing in Michigan.

BENTON HARBOR, MI -- West Michigan movie fans who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing are suing Celebration! Cinemas for discrimination, alleging their Benton Harbor theater fails to provide widely available captioning accommodations.

Graham Forsey, 23, a St. Joseph resident who is Deaf, alongside the National Association of the Deaf filed a lawsuit Monday against Loeks Theatres, Inc., also known as Celebration! Cinemas. Forsey says he asked the Benton Harbor theater multiple times in writing to provide captioning and Celebration! Cinemas failed to accommodate, according to the lawsuit.

Read the full lawsuit here.

“It’s about access," said Mary Vargas, an attorney representing the plaintiffs. "It’s about Mr. Forsey and members of the National Association of the Deaf being able to go to the movies.”

A non-profit representing more than 137,000 Michiganders who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the NAD is suing Celebration! Cinemas with Forsey stating this failure to provide captioning technology violates a basic civil right as specified under the Americans with Disabilities Act among other laws. Meanwhile, Forsey says he is forced to drive about an hour to another movie theater which accommodates him.

Celebration! Cinemas responded to FOX 17 Monday and confirmed their Benton Harbor theater does not have any captioning accommodations, releasing this statement:

"We’re fully aware of the issues surrounding this complaint and new technologies will help resolve it very soon.

The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) has been working actively with advocacy groups to clarify updated standards for supporting the Deaf community. These standards are currently being reviewed by the Department of Justice, and we expect a ruling from them in the very near future.

Celebration! Cinema is committed to continuing to improve services for all of our guests, and we are looking forward to the approval of these standards so we can continue to invest in closed captioning technology. Currently, we have assisted listening devices in all locations and closed captioning in our Grand Rapids and Lansing, MI markets. Benton Harbor and other locations will receive captioning equipment in the coming months upon the adoption of the new standards.

Technological solutions for visually and hearing impaired guests are evolving at a rapid rate. We look forward to working collaboratively with NATO and advocacy groups both locally and nationally on this topic.

Steve VanWagoner, VP of Marketing & Public Relations, Celebration! Cinema"

Closed captioning technology is readily available at other movie theaters. It ranges from open captioning an entire audience would see, to captioning glasses, or individual devices that fit onto a theater seat.

"It's frustrating because it’s been so many years since this was a legal requirement for theaters," said Vargas. "There are roughly 137,000 people in the state of Michigan who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and guess what? They’re just like everybody else. They like to go to the movies.”

Deaf History THAT - "Before The NAD"

A short film from NAD - Deaf History THAT "Before The NAD"

SILVER SPRING, Maryland -- The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is excited to release the new video series, Deaf History That! In this brief episode, learn what were one of our favorite pastimes. Here's Linsay Darnall, Jr. shares about the New England Gallaudet Association of the Deaf. #deafhistoryTHAT.

Video description and transcript:

A man stands in front of an off-white wall and an old model ship on top of an old bookcase. A small transparent NAD logo appears on bottom right.

LINSAY: Deaf people were faced with a dilemma that had raised concerns among them. It was generally known that Deaf people, upon the graduation from school, would acquire jobs and live at their respective places. However, the idea of Deaf people living far apart from their friends could have a negative impact on their intelligence. They needed to gather and discuss solutions. So in 1853, Deaf people in New England congregated in Vermont and decided to establish an organization. Subsequently, in 1854, Thomas Brown, who was in charge in developing the constitution for the newly formed group, and others gathered for a meeting in Henniker, New Hampshire. The meeting lasted for several days which formed the constitution and the name of the new organization the New England Gallaudet Association of the Deaf, the NEGAD. The purpose of the organization was to promote the intellectual growth among the Deaf people who lived in various places and to become a model for other states to follow. Eventually, other states had established their own state association which prompted the eventual establishment of the National Association of the Deaf, the NAD. All of that began with a group of people who were posed with a question that led to the national organization that made it possible for all Deaf to advance.

A man sits at an old typewriter, the American flag is behind him. He types for a bit and then makes eye contact with the viewer.

LINSAY: Reading newspapers is one of the pastimes that Deaf people loved to do. The first official publication from the Deaf community was the American Annals for the Deaf that was widely circulated. Deaf people could follow what was happening in Deaf communities across the nation. Eventually, different schools for the Deaf would start their own paper; these papers shared opinions, discussions and stories. That prompted many Deaf people living in different areas to develop a sense of mutual cooperation which led up to the establishment of the National Association of the Deaf. These papers included entertaining stories, articles that started discussions on the issues that affected the schools of thought of the day, poems, and general news. A Deaf person in one place probably would read about the person they were familiar with in other area of America and so forth. The papers has greatly influenced the individuals within the Deaf community develop a sense of deep bond with each other.

Linsay goes back to typing.

NAD Applauds Deaf Grassroots Movement Efforts

WATCH [CC] - NAD CEO Howard A. Rosenblum applauds Deaf Grassroots Movement for their successful efforts on May 4, 2016.

SILVER SPRING, MD -- The video begins with Howard A. Rosenblum in the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Headquarters' lobby, regards to the Deaf Grassroots Movement's efforts in the Deaf community in all 50 states of the United States, Rosenblum would like to share with you.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Transcript: Howard: Hello! I’d like to talk about the Deaf Grassroots Movement (DGM). The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) recognizes the extraordinary achievements of DGM in setting up rallies in the capitals of nearly all 50 states, each with many deaf people attending and showing the strength of the deaf community! The NAD congratulates, applauds, and thanks DGM for tremendously raising awareness of Deaf Culture, deaf people, ASL, and all the rights and needs of ours that are not being met now. DGM has powerfully raised this awareness on the state level, and the NAD expresses its deep appreciation for DGM’s work.

I remember in September 2015 when DGM hosted a national rally in the Nation’s Capitol in Washington, DC. The NAD observed the online discussion of DGM’s national rally, which was new and interesting. The NAD respected the independence and autonomy of DGM. When DGM invited me to present on behalf of the NAD, we gladly accepted this honor to join and support the national DGM rally. It was wonderful to see deaf people from all over the country come together for the national DGM rally, which included great testimony from various people on the challenges and barriers that deaf people continue to face every day in this country.

DGM successfully did it again in nearly all 50 states! NAD representatives were in attendance at some state DGM rallies providing their support while respecting DGM’s independent leadership role for the rallies.

We look forward to more successes from DGM, and hope that we can work together as partners – DGM and NAD – as we advocate for equality for all deaf people in employment, education, election access, and all parts of life. We want equality in everything for deaf people, no more inequality! The NAD thanks DGM for all of its important successes. Thank you!

WASHINGTON DC -- Deaf Advocates, Gallaudet University and the National Association of the Deaf SLAMS Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) posted letter on their website to Washington Post.

The Washington Post published an article "A ‘Dancing With the Stars’ contestant is vying for a White House Correspondents’ Dinner invite" about Nyle DiMarco's The ASL App, an app that teaches conversational in American Sign Language.

DiMarco comes from a Deaf family and American Sign Language is his native language. He is a spokesperson for Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids - LEAD-K. Read transcript at Deaf Progressivism - A.G. Bell Associaiton Is The Bully.

Jason Tozier: Alexander Graham Bell thinks that he has more influence in America folklore than Santa Claus. It is painful to watch the various periods of hate as they unfold and take shape. It is indicative of a change in the world of hate when bigots begin to form mergers between themselves and change their policies to match the power. NAD and Deaf Parents Sues Tennessee Hospital

WATCH [CC] - Lawsuit: The National Association of the Deaf suing Tennessee hospital didn't meet Deaf parents' needs.

JOHNSON CITY, TN -- ABC NEWS: A Deaf couple says a Tennessee hospital discriminated against them by failing to provide a qualified sign language interpreter while their 21-year-old daughter was dying of cancer.

Chris and Donna Cantrell's federal lawsuit against Mountain States Health Alliance in Johnson City was filed Wednesday by Disability Rights Tennessee and the National Association of the Deaf.

The organizations say the Johnson City Medical Center refused to provide qualified sign language interpreters to allow the couple from Wise, Virginia, to participate in their daughter's care during the six months before Sydnei Cantrell died on May 19.

"(The couple) watched their daughter suffer from serious health conditions ... without ever receiving a full explanation of what was happening to their daughter," the lawsuit said. "(Donna) Cantrell saw her daughter burst into tears but had no idea why she was crying. Because her daughter was too upset to explain, (she) did not learn that her daughter was dying until much later."

The hospital provided a person to facilitate communications on fewer than five occasions, but the person was not qualified to act as an interpreter and didn't sign clearly enough, the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit asks a judge to order Mountain States to develop a nondiscrimination policy requiring the provision of qualified sign language interpreters, and to train medical staff on compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuit also asks for unspecified compensatory damages and attorneys' fees.

Mountain States spokeswoman Teresa Hicks declined to comment, citing patient confidentiality requirements.

Deaf Advocates Responds On Police Brutality

The National Association of the Deaf CEO Howard A. Rosenblum discusses police brutality towards Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

National Association of the Deaf CEO Howard A. Rosenblum in a video description and transcript: I'd like to discuss a serious situation that recently happened in Florida. Due to a miscommunication between the police officers, the Deaf man involved died. This is a terrible situation. We need to make sure that does not happen again.

What happened in Florida isn't the only time that happened, it has happened all over in the United States of America, within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community as well. Similar situations including Deaf and Hard of Hearing people and police officers has happened in Seattle, Washington, Texas, California, Illinois, Michigan, Oklahoma, and most recently in Florida.

There's many more situations that have happened in other places that I haven't mentioned. This is terrible. Some have died or have been badly hurt because of miscommunication with police officers... this is not acceptable and it must stop.

Some police officers are not aware and do not respect Deaf and Hard of Hearing communication needs. When a police officer approaches an individual, they assume that person is hearing and take action if the person does not respond. Instead, what should happen is police officers analyzing the situation first and figure out if the person is Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and from there they should respect their communication needs to resolve the situation.

Regarding the situation in Florida, the NAD President Chris Wagner is from Florida and is working with the police and other leaders to determine how to improve the situation and prevent such instances from ever happening again.

The NAD has also worked with others in different states when similar situations have happened in the past. Again, this is not acceptable and it must stop. We have since realized we need to deal with the US Government on a national level in order to remedy the many situations across the US, specifically with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Attorney General. We need to work with them to set the standard protocol for the Police Department. Police officers must realize that in all situations the persons they encounter might be Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and respect the communication needs.

This is important for the safety of the police, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, and everyone else. Many of you have contacted the NAD expressing concerns about this important issue. The Board of Directors and the NAD staff all agree that this is important for the safety and protection of all individuals involved. I want to thank you for contacting us and please know we are working hard on this issue. Thank you for your time.

Deaf Lottery - Scam Awareness

The blog covers about the Scam Awareness. More victims possible in Deaf Lottery cases, be aware and protect yourself from the scammers.

On Your Side Alert - Fake Lottery Email Targets Deaf and Hard of Hearing:

Criminals are now targeting the Hearing Impaired. A viewer contacted 12 On Your Side after she was fooled into believing she'd hit the jackpot.

You've probably never heard of the United States Deaf Lottery and it's for good reason: it doesn't exist. But that's not stopping cyber crooks. An email claiming to be from the phony organization is showing up in local inboxes. The viewer, who admittedly fell for this, was too embarrassed to talk on camera but didn't want anyone else to be fooled and called 12 On Your Side to spread the word.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Ron Lanier, Director of the Virginia Department for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, said, "To me it is like, how dare they. But we all know there are people out there like this. But usually when I see something like that, I immediately delete it."

Like with most of these email deceptions, these criminals are phishing for information. Our viewer was told her Deaf friend had recently won $550,000 and she was a winner too. The catch was that to collect, she had to give up loads of personal information including her banking details. "It is someone trying to get something from you and you will get nothing in return," Lanier said...

Hundreds More Possible Victims in Deaf Lottery Scam Investigation:

Police say they're looking at hundreds more potential victims in a Deaf Lottery scam investigation. A detective for Westerville P.D. says he first thought there were about 300 victims in a scam involving a fake Deaf Awareness Lottery. Now, he believes there could be 1200 people all over the country. A woman who lives in a Westerville Deaf community is accused of helping the scammers by communicating with elderly Deaf women across the country.

A woman who knows the Deaf community well agrees with police that trust played a big role. If the person that was telling somebody they were Deaf and they were talking to a Deaf absolutely they would trust them, said Joan Marie Johnston. Johnston was married to a Deaf man for more than 50 years and about 60% of her friends are Deaf. The person who pulled this other lady in I don't know who it is but shame on them, said Johnston.

Deaf Lottery Case: Resident faces charges in Deaf community scam:

A Westerville woman who is Deaf faces charges of theft from an elderly person for her role in a scam that reportedly preyed upon other members of the Deaf community.

Elaine Katz, 76, is accused of being a part of a nationwide scam that involved her calling other Deaf senior citizens to convince them to wire money as part of a fake "Deaf Awareness Lottery" scheme. Katz's Westerville residence was searched and she was taken into custody and booked in February, though she was never jailed.

On July 23, Katz pled not guilty to theft from an elderly person in Franklin County Municipal Court, and her hearing is set for Sept. 22. The case is largely based on one victim in Florida. But authorities say that Katz may have contacted up to 1,200 other victims via a video phone, a common form of communication in the Deaf community.

Authorities said they were unable to confirm how many other cases of fraud may be involved due to logistical difficulties and time constraints. Katz lives in Westerville's Columbus Colony Elderly Care, a facility off South Sunbury Road owned and operated by the Ohio School of the Deaf Alumni Association. Columbus Colony focuses on care for Deaf and Blind seniors.

Ted Smith, a Westerville Division of Police detective who handles fraud cases, had been tracking the Katz case since January, and helped lead the way on the case. He said that Katz's own deafness and age made the case difficult to handle...

The "Deaf Lottery" From Australia, Is This a Fake or Real?:

Here's a perfect example - it's hard to believe that some of the sources found a website called "The Deaf Lottery Australia" - www.TheDeafLottery.au.com, is this a scam website? You decide...mostly Deaf people don't felling into the scammers.

Scam Alert - Protect Yourself From National Association of the Deaf:

A message from National Association of the Deaf (NAD) - Have you received a message from a “Deaf Charity” or a “Deaf Lottery” that said you won money? Did the message mention the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)? Beware. The NAD does not participate in “Deaf Charity” or “Deaf Lottery” programs.

Scam, cheat, fraud, trick, and swindle. For example, you may receive a message from a “Deaf Charity” or “Deaf Lottery” saying you won money. They may ask for more information about you. They may say you must pay money before you can get your lottery money. They may try to make you feel foolish for not sending your money to get more money. Other people may send you a message claiming they won lottery money, and now you can win. This is a scam. Sample Scam Message.

Please warning people not to reply to the bogus emails. If you think you're a victim, contact your bank right away. You can also report the email to Internet Crime Complaint Center - IC3.gov.

Be aware, educate, and protect yourself. Share this blog to your loved ones and friends about the scam awareness: Deaf Lottery - Scam Awareness.

Now is sending them some stood it doesn't have meaning that there I don't know what this means of the sign language interpreter.

So together we watched one of Nelson Mandela's grandchildren deliver. You can see even wonders if a rocking horse was mentioned in the podium because the interpreter the for one. Many people that hope that that be plenty of singing and dancing to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela they weren't really ready for all those long speeches at the ceremony. But the biggest headache now for the South African government which organized the event is to explain how this man got the job.

Fortunately from local TV it's clear that to interpret his a completely different page. An extraordinary case of lost in translation.

For more on this I'm joined now by the president of the National Association of the Deaf Chris Wagner was talking with as via an interpreter. What was the signer do weighing that make people think he was a fake... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Advocates Sues U of M Over Stadium Design

National Association of the Deaf sues University of Maryland for failing to provide closed captioning at sports games.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Aberdeen Patch: A lawsuit filed in September by the National Association of the Deaf against the University of Maryland for its lack of amenities for Deaf fans at sporting events is just one of many such efforts to ensure hearing-impaired sports enthusiasts can enjoy themselves at stadiums.

Association CEO Howard A. Rosenblum said his organization has successfully sued other athletic organizations over the same issue, including the Washington Redskins, Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky.

The association successfully sued the Washington Redskins in 2011. According to lawsuit documents, the Redskins were required to “provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing fans equal access to the aural information broadcast over the stadium bowl public address system at FedEx Field.”

The University of Maryland lawsuit details complaints brought to the association by Sean Markel and Joseph Innes, two Deaf sports patrons who regularly attend Terrapin sporting events at Comcast Center and Byrd Stadium. Markel and Innes filed another complaint against the university on Oct. 16.

“This is an action to enforce the rights of individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and to ensure full and equal access to the defendant University of Maryland, College Park’s football and basketball games and other programs, services and activities taking place at defendants’ venues and on the University of Maryland athletic department website,” reads the official complaint filed by the association on behalf of Markel and Innes.

Maryland Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications Brian Ullman released a statement in response to the first complaint saying the university is committed to making sure Terrapin fans with disabilities can enjoy the school’s sporting events. He said the team already offers closed captioning through a special website that can be displayed on smart phones and tablets...
