Hearing People Questions Annoy Deaf People

Deaf people tell you which questions annoy them the most.

Sometimes people ask stupid questions when they don't fully understand something. But a new video about the most annoying questions people who are deaf or hearing impaired get asked is proving how surprisingly tone-deaf people can be (pun not intended).

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

In a nearly four-minute video by The Cut, the group reveals the most common questions they get asked, such as, "Can Deaf people drive?"

While this one is valid, since many find it confusing that it's legal for those who are hearing impaired to drive, but illegal for people to wear headphones behind the wheel, many of the other questions were pretty cringe-worthy, as they assumed people who are deaf aren't physically capable of doing regular things.

- Things Not To Say To A Deaf Person

"Do Deaf people actually have sex?" and "Can you read and write?" were some of the more bizarre inquiries, while one of the more offensive questions was whether they need a wheelchair.

"People ask me if I need a wheelchair, like when I'm at the airport," one man revealed in the video. "I'm like, hello, I'm standing right in front of you! I just can't hear."

- How Not To Be A Dick To Deaf People

Earlier this year, a woman from Scotland named Bea, who is also Deaf, shared a similar video of herself revealing the stupid questions she gets asked. In the clip, which was posted by BBC The Social, she proved that her body -- and the bodies of all other people who are deaf or hearing impaired -- are perfectly functional, by brilliantly responding to the question, "How do Deaf people have babies?"

- Deaf People Teach Hearing People Bad Words

"My ear's not telling my womb to stop making babies. Just 'cause my ears [are] not working doesn't mean I can defy the laws of biology," she said snarkily.

A Short Film About A Deaf Dancer

Chris Fonseca: "Dance is not an option, It's who I am" - A short film about a Deaf dancer.

LONDON, United Kingdom -- In collaboration with Smirnoff as part of their ‘We’re Open’ campaign, UK producer Donae’o recently teamed up with Deaf dancer Chris Fonseca and dance crew Plague for the video for his track ‘Mami No Like’, which drops next week.

As a precursor to that, it’s worth watching this short film about Chris’ processes as a Deaf dancer, as well as some of the issues he’s had to overcome to get to where he is today.

Chris’s aim is to teach members of the Deaf community that there are ways to enjoy music beyond just hearing it. As well as featuring in this video, he has teamed up with Smirnoff to host a Deaf dance workshop every last Friday of the month at Huskies dance studios.

Check out the official music video for Donae'o - 'Mami No Like'

Deaf Dancer: Oh Wonder - Lose It

Deaf Dancer: Oh Wonder, Lose It - The Shaheem’s Story.

Feeling the power of music is just as important as hearing it. What moved you most about Shaheem’s story? Shaheem Sanchez lost his hearing at the age of four. He taught himself to dance by feeling the vibrations of the music. Vibrations from noise in the outside world confuse his perception of the music. This is his process to show that Deaf people can do anything, because anything is possible.

"Deaf Dancer": Behind The Scenes With Shaheem Sanchez.

Who is Shaheem? Following in his father’s footsteps, Shaheem Sanchez, aka DeafDancerShaheem, started dancing at age 11, despite losing his hearing at age four. Though his father passed before he was born, his family told him stories about his father’s dance skills and he thought, why not give dance a shot? Dance has become a very important part of his life.

He loves to feel the music, go with the flow, and feel the peace that comes from dance. By feeling the beat and reading the body language of his collaborators, Shaheem is able to connect to the music and express himself. It is important to him to show that Deaf people can do anything, because anything is possible. Fun Fact: Shaheem passed down his love of dance to his little brother Kida The Great.

Ted Evans - In Search Of The Deaf World

"In Search of the Deaf World" Promo by Ted Evans.

LONDON, United Kingdom -- Deaf filmmaking, Ted Evans - a british freelance director, editor and general all round filmmaker based in London, U.K.

Ted Evans having recently visited Malaysia where he met numerous Deaf people from all kinds of backgrounds; He have since fantasied about travelling all over the world, meeting a wide range of unique Deaf people who have a story to tell. During this search the process would also reveal the sub-story of the filmmaker's' journey, as they search for the Deaf people and where they live.

Deaf people are not recorded and they are hidden from view. Deaf History was recorded by a very limited few yet there are so many fascinating stories and characters to unearth.

Having such films would both educate mainstream society on several authentic aspects of Deaf Culture and at the same time serve to inspire Deaf people who do not know how other Deaf people like them, live in countries across the world.

Using the footage his shot in Malaysia, He have put together a promo teaser to give the viewer a sense of style and the type of visuals they'd be keen to incorporate into the films. This is not a real programme or docmentary series.

Filmed by Ted Evans (5DMK2 footage shot mainly by Becky Bailey and a few shots here and there from Brian Duffy)

Ted Evans' statement on the website:

"This is simply something we could do if we had the funding and networks set up. I hope people see this and want to see more because it proves that there would be an audience for such films.

I don't know when I can finish this pilot. Firstly I have no budget, secondly there will be some major translation challenges to overcome and this takes time and money something I am very short on. If you wish to help you can donate some money via the Tip-Jar below this film.

A big thanks must go out to my friends at silentSHOUT who helped set up a lot of what you see in this clip. They pretty much produced this episode and I appreciate all the time and work they put into our visit.

I didn't want the footage to sit on a shelf somewhere so I quickly cut this. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could travel to countries all over the world, finding unique deaf people in all kinds of environments. We already know that some stories would be incredibly sad and difficult, but there will also be inspiring ones and stories that will fascinate everyone. Until then just imagine what we could do!"

#FakeInterpreter - Rights For Deaf Children

Education rights for Deaf children, a feature of the #FakeInterpreter.

LONDON -- The #fakeinterpreter incident during Nelson Mandela's memorial teaches us an important thing - if you can't sign, don't pretend you can.

However, there is a large number of incompetent communication support workers "interpreting" for Deaf children in mainstreaming schools of the United Kingdom.

Deaf children are born with the same basic capacities for learning and language as all children; they can and should reach their full potential with appropriate, visual, quality educational programmes and support - it is their human rights!

Deaf Not Dumb - Official Video

"Deaf Not Dumb" video in a 'rap-style' using sign language.

Deaf Not Dumb is a creative video piece performed in a 'rap-style' using sign language that focuses on the key issues that matter most to the group.

They cover issues relating to communication, learning to deal with Deaf people and how they want to be seen by wider society. Their aim is to educate all people and declare that being Deaf does not mean they are dumb.

The video is highly animated with graphical text that visualises the hand signs and acts as subtitles for hearing people. So the video is not squarely aimed at a Deaf audience but to everyone.

This video acts as part of a campaign to promote and celebrate Deaf Culture. Find more information on https://deafnotdumb.com.
