Deaf Church: Ex-Atheists Who Became Christians

WATCH [ASL/CC] - Ex-Atheists who became Christians in ASL by Deaf pastor who turned atheist.

A video producer by Justin Vollmar also known as Virtual Deaf Church, a pastor who turned atheist sharing the ASL storytelling.

Some Christians claimed that they used to be Atheists. I want to dispute this claim and examine it critically. I propose that they never were really Atheists in the first place. The word "Atheist," were misunderstood or misinterpreted. I will explain in this short video in American Sign Language and subtitled in English.

Justin Vollmar posted the video and sharing on DeafVIDEO.TV social networking website for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. The comments are mixing of the positives and negatives/bashing has reacted to a video showing on DeafVIDEO.TV/#Comments.

The Human Right To Language For Deaf Children

Rethinking LRE: The Human Right To Language for Deaf Children.

Rethinking Language-Rich Environment by Brenda J. Falgier. The video bases its dicussion on "The Human Right to Language" by Mr. Siegel.

Gallaudet University Press has published, "The Human Right To Language," by NDEP's founder and director, Lawrence M. Siegel who created the Statement of Principle in which he argued that the educational delivery system in America must be "communication-driven" for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, proposes in his new book that current special education law violates the 1st and 14th Amendment rights of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

Brenda Falgier's discussion is based on Lawrence M. Siegel argument regarding the First Amendment in safeguarding the human right to language for Deaf children.

Through Deaf Eyes - Documentary Film

The 90 minute production for PBS: History "Through Deaf Eyes" will take a look at Deaf culture from the 19th century to the present in the States.

Through Deaf Eyes is a two-hour HDTV documentary for PBS exploring nearly 200 years of Deaf life in America. The film presents the shared experiences of American history family life, education, work, and community connections from the perspective of Deaf citizens.

Interviews include community leaders, historians, and Deaf Americans with diverse views on language use, technology and identity. Bringing a Deaf cinematic lens to the film are six artistic works by Deaf media artists and filmmakers.

Poignant, sometimes humorous, these films draw on the media artists' own lives and are woven throughout the documentary. But the core of the film remains the larger story of Deaf life in America - a story of conflicts, prejudice and affirmation that reaches the heart of what it means to be human.

Through Deaf Eyes does not approach the topic of deaf history from the perspective of sentimentality or overcoming, nor does it deny the physical reality of being deaf.

The documentary takes a straight-forward look at life for people who are part of the cultural-linguistic group who use American Sign Language and often define themselves as "Deaf" with a capital, and cultural, "D" and deaf people who, for a variety of reasons, do not identify with the Deaf cultural community.

The history often shows that intersections between deaf and Deaf people are many and that oppression and discrimination are common experiences. Source

The Father of Cochlear Implant Dies at 89

The Father of Neurotology (Cochlear Implant) Dies at 89.

LOS ANGELES, California -- Dr. William F. House dies at 89; championed cochlear implant. Dr. William F. House also developed a successful surgery for an ear disease that had prevented astronaut Alan Shepard from returning to space.

William F. House, D.D.S., M.D. Documentary Film Part 1 to 4:

Dr. William F. House, a dentist turned ear specialist who 50 years ago defied the medical establishment and many advocates for the hearing impaired to champion an implantable device, now widely accepted, that made everyday sounds audible to the profoundly Deaf, has died. He was 89.

House, who led the venerable House Ear Institute in Los Angeles during much of the 1980s, died Friday of metastatic melanoma at his home in Aurora, Oregon, said his daughter, Karen House.

An innovator who seemed to relish bucking convention, House was responsible for a number of major medical advances, helping to pioneer microsurgery techniques and a new approach to removing acoustic tumors. He also developed a successful surgery for an ear disease that had prevented astronaut Alan Shepard from returning to space.

But House was best known for his early and vigorous advocacy of the cochlear implant, an electronic device that stimulated the auditory nerve and helped the user recognize sounds.

He began to develop the device in the late 1950s after hearing of successful experiments by two European scientists. After publishing his initial results in 1961, he encountered heavy criticism from physicians who said the device was crude and could damage the ear. Representatives of the Deaf community also were opposed, arguing that Deaf people did not need to hear to be considered normal.

But House persevered and in 1984, 25 years after he first implanted a device in a patient, won crucial validation. That year the Food and Drug Administration approved the House cochlear implant for use in Deaf adults, calling it the first device to replace a human sense organ.

Today, more than 200,000 people around the world have cochlear implants, according to the FDA. Read The Full Story.

Dr. House is called "the Father of Neurotology" - the treatment of inner ear disorders. His surgical treatment for Meniere's disease enabled astronaut Alan Shepard to fly to the moon. His great achievement was the first cochlear implant, allowing the deaf to hear. "Dr. House ... has developed more new concepts in otology than almost any other single person in history..." [American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation 1995 Distinguished Award for Contributions in Clinical Otology]

Dr. House's book is The Struggles of a Medical Innovator - Cochlear Implants and Other Ear Surgeries.

Deaf Awareness: 'I Sign and I Live' Short Film

This short film is related to cochlear implants and suppression of American Sign Language.

Click on the image above to watch the 32-minute film with subtitles.

If you watch this short film, then you guys should open your eyes and understand in 'I Sign and I Live' by Aidan Mack. The 32-minute film about a Deaf teacher and her Deaf niece. This film is related to cochlear implants and suppression of American Sign Language.

The 32-minutes dramatic film, I Sign and I Live, is about Daisy, a Deaf teacher who faces prejudices and sterotypes in society at large. She faces a battle of wills in her own family with her sister over the matter the upbringing of her niece Dawn. Her hearing sister Kay makes decision to have her Deaf daughter, Dawn, fitted with cochlear implant. Daisy is appalled at the decision. It amounts to Kay rejecting Dawn's Deaf identity. Her sister is under the false impression that having any amount of hearing, no matter how limited and no matter the risk involved in obtaining it, is better than being Deaf and is better than experiencing life as a visual being.

Kay has always been prejudiced against Deaf people, though she was able to hide her prejudice until her decision to have Daisy implanted. Daisy is an educated professional and is hurt to discover Kay's ignorance. Kay is less educated and does not work outside the home. She doesn't believe that Deaf people can succeed professionally, even though she was witnessed Daisy's success and her accomplishments.

Daisy's niece is removed from her signing classroom and placed in an oral, auditory-oriented class. She is not allowed to sign with anyone. Dawn is not allowed to interact with Daisy at all. The story of the battle between Daisy and her sister ends with a tragic conclusion. Kay, along with the larger society, tries to suppress the use of sign language, but Deaf people like Daisy continue fighting on to sign - and live.
