Deaf Awareness: Jenn Chia was Deaf for a day. This is what happened..
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- This video is one that is incredibly close to Jenn Chia heart. Being Deaf for a day has made Jenn more aware of the world around her. It has opened up her mind to a new worldview. Video with English Subtitles.
Before this, Jenn have always deemed the Deaf as, for lack of a better word, incapable of many everyday activities. Yes, she was that stupid and uninitiated.
After this “experiment,” albeit only for a day, she learnt that apart from hearing, the Deaf can do anything a hearing person can... and more.
Without her sense of hearing, she found herself paying more attention when communicating with other people. She became more attentive to signs, cues, and nuances that could indicate what the other person is talking about.
In the making of this video, she realised how much taken words and communication for granted; and how a genuine smile could light up a room, transcending language and senses.
Thank you so much Grab Malaysia for giving her this opportunity to experience something so invaluable.
She want to thank the team as well for supporting her and realising this mini documentary with Jenn Chia. To know more about how you can support the initiative as well, visit website: https://grb.to/GFGSoimjenn.

WATCH [CC] - The touching story about one of the strongest Deaf friendships ever witnessed.
A travel blogger Drew Binsky posted on YouTube channel Daily Travel Vids, share the journey experience, meets foreign Deaf women for the first time.
In non-video making life, Drew Binsky said "This is a very touching story about one of the strongest friendships I've ever witnessed -- between a girl named Amni and a girl named Chia Wei, who come from the amazing country of Malaysia."
"Amni was born with about a 60% hearing loss, but Chia Wei didn't know it until the girls were 21 years old, when Amni had gone almost completely Deaf. As a linguistics major, Chia Wei was already learning Sign Language before she knew that Amni was Deaf and the rest is history. This video as much as enjoyed meeting these girls and hearing their story in real life." Drew Binsky said.

Starbucks Opening Café Staffed By Deaf Baristas
A Starbucks store in Malaysia has become the first in the world coffee chain to focus on providing employment opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing customers.
KUALA LUMPUR -- Seattle Times: A Starbucks store in Malaysia has become the first in the global coffee chain to focus on providing employment opportunities for those who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing customers.
The store in Kuala Lumpur, which opened Wednesday, results from a partnership between Starbucks Malaysia and The Society of Interpreters for the Deaf, the company said.
The society provided Starbucks with two sign-language interpreters during hiring, training and coaching for Deaf employees, and to teach sign language to hearing employees, according to a Starbucks news release.
The store employs 10 Deaf employees and three hearing ones, including the store manager.
“This is an underrepresented community in Malaysia,” a Starbucks spokeswoman said. “Over the years, the team has worked with local organizations to hire Deaf partners [employees] and we wanted to celebrate and recognize the contributions of Deaf workers and people of all disabilities.”
Customers place their orders by filling out a menu ticket that they hand to the baristas. The baristas then key in the orders on a dual-screen system where customers can see if their order is correct. The order number is displayed on a large screen above the pickup counter when it’s ready.
The store also has a Starbucks Card kiosk where customers can check their card balances and reward-program points.
Starbucks currently has no plans to replicate this model beyond the Malaysia store, the spokeswoman said.

Ted Evans - In Search Of The Deaf World
"In Search of the Deaf World" Promo by Ted Evans.
LONDON, United Kingdom -- Deaf filmmaking, Ted Evans - a british freelance director, editor and general all round filmmaker based in London, U.K.
Ted Evans having recently visited Malaysia where he met numerous Deaf people from all kinds of backgrounds; He have since fantasied about travelling all over the world, meeting a wide range of unique Deaf people who have a story to tell. During this search the process would also reveal the sub-story of the filmmaker's' journey, as they search for the Deaf people and where they live.
Deaf people are not recorded and they are hidden from view. Deaf History was recorded by a very limited few yet there are so many fascinating stories and characters to unearth.
Having such films would both educate mainstream society on several authentic aspects of Deaf Culture and at the same time serve to inspire Deaf people who do not know how other Deaf people like them, live in countries across the world.
Using the footage his shot in Malaysia, He have put together a promo teaser to give the viewer a sense of style and the type of visuals they'd be keen to incorporate into the films. This is not a real programme or docmentary series.
Filmed by Ted Evans (5DMK2 footage shot mainly by Becky Bailey and a few shots here and there from Brian Duffy)

Ted Evans' statement on the website:
"This is simply something we could do if we had the funding and networks set up. I hope people see this and want to see more because it proves that there would be an audience for such films.
I don't know when I can finish this pilot. Firstly I have no budget, secondly there will be some major translation challenges to overcome and this takes time and money something I am very short on. If you wish to help you can donate some money via the Tip-Jar below this film.
A big thanks must go out to my friends at silentSHOUT who helped set up a lot of what you see in this clip. They pretty much produced this episode and I appreciate all the time and work they put into our visit.
I didn't want the footage to sit on a shelf somewhere so I quickly cut this. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could travel to countries all over the world, finding unique deaf people in all kinds of environments. We already know that some stories would be incredibly sad and difficult, but there will also be inspiring ones and stories that will fascinate everyone. Until then just imagine what we could do!"
