'The Simpsons' Reveals Springfield's Location

D'Oh! Springfield's location is impossible to determine, and the show is deliberately evasive on the subject, providing contradictory clues and information about its location. We found a real-life 'The Simpsons'

SPRINGFIELD, USA -- The television show The Simpsons is set in a town generically named "Springfield", without indicating a state. Creator Matt Groening has suggested in interviews that he chose the name because of its ubiquity; the show's intentionally contradictory information about the location of the town prevents matching the fictional Springfield to a real one.

Springfield is a fictional town in the American animated sitcom The Simpsons, which serves as its main setting. A mid-sized town in an undetermined state of the United States, Springfield acts as a complete universe in which characters can explore the issues faced by modern society.

The geography of the town and its surroundings are flexible, changing to address whatever an episode's plot calls for. Springfield is intended to represent "anytown, USA" and not be a specific real town, although the producers acknowledge basing the town on numerous locations.

Springfield is a famously common place-name in the English-speaking world, especially in the United States. According to the U.S. Geological Survey there are currently 33 populated places named Springfield in 25 U.S. states throughout the United States, including five in Wisconsin; additionally, there are at least 36 Springfield Townships, including 11 in Ohio. Database studies reveal that there are several more common U.S. place-names than Springfield, including Fairview and Midway. Because of the many contradictory statements regarding Springfield, it is impossible for the town to exist in a specific state.

Springfield's geography is varied, including forests, meadows, mountain ranges, a desert, a gorge, a glacier, beaches, badlands, canyons, swamps, a harbor, waterholes, and waterways; a very varied city indeed. Major named geographical features include Springfield Gorge, Springfield National Forest, the volcanic Mt. Springfield, the West Springfield Desert "three times the size of Texas!", the Springfield Badlands also known as the Alkali Flats, the gigantic Murderhorn Mountain, Springfield Glacier, Mt. Useful National Park, Springfield Mesa, Springfield Monument Park, and Springfield National Park.

In The Simpsons Movie, Ned Flanders tells Bart that the state where Springfield is located is bordered by the states of Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky of which only Ohio and Kentucky are real neighboring states, Nevada and Maine being at opposite sides of the United States.

The city's unknown and unknowable geography is a recurring joke in the series, it the "riddle wrapped in an enigma that is Springfield's location", but Lisa Simpson states that "it's a bit of a mystery, yes. But if you look at the clues, you can figure it out." Episodes frequently make fun of the fact that Springfield's state is unidentifiable by adding further conflicting descriptions, obscuring onscreen map representations, and interrupting conversational references.

Although it’s been the butt of many jokes throughout the series, one big question has always remained in the Simpsons. We finally found Simpsons' Springfield.

He said, "I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. To promote The Simpsons Movie, various actual towns and cities across the U.S. called Springfield competed to hold the premiere. The 2012 episode "Beware My Cheating Bart" played upon the unidentifiability of the state in its opening chalkboard gag, which stated that "The true location of Springfield is in any state but yours". Springfield was titled "America's Worst City", and the town "America's Crud Bucket". Everyone will think it's their Springfield.

'Simpsons' Theme Park to Open With a Real-Life in Universal Orlando Resort:

A Simpsons Theme Park to open with a real-life Krusty Burger, Moe's Tavern, and more, this is big than California, Universal Studios announced that it will be expanding the area around The Simpsons Ride at its Universal Orlando Resort in Florida into a full-on Springfield replica this Summer. This means aside from the rides, it will feature actual restaurants and foods straight from The Simpsons.

Visitors will be able to get "Krusty-certified meat sandwiches" from a Krusty Burger, doughnuts from Lard Lad and beer at the Duff Brewery which was brewed exclusively for the theme park.

Deaf Scientists Probe Hearing Loss Treatments

Team of Deaf scientists probe hearing loss treatments in Oregon.

PORTLAND, Oregon -- WISN Milwaukee: When Peter Steyger learned to speak, he had to wear hearing aids. At 14 months, he was struck with meningitis. The powerful antibiotic that saved his life largely stripped him of hearing.

His mother, determined to keep him in the hearing community, worked with him an hour a day for four years as part of an intensive regime of speech therapy. Sometimes it took him 10 minutes to learn a single word. He didn't start to catch up to his peers until eight years later.

But today at 54, Steyger is a prominent auditory neuroscientist. At Oregon Health & Science University, he's part of a team of researchers who are studying the auditory system in hopes of helping others who can't hear.

The 10 faculty members in OHSU's Oregon Hearing Research Center are considered trailblazers among their peers.

"I look at their program as a very unique one in the world because of the breadth and the depth of their auditory science and the high quality of the science that's done there," said Jennifer Stone, an auditory neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The center also stands out in another way: It has five professors with hearing loss. Few other auditory research departments have even one scientist with a hearing disability. None has as many as OHSU, experts say.

Their varied biomedical backgrounds allow them to study every aspect of the auditory system, and their personal experiences inform their research.

"They've all got pretty high profiles and are covering lots of different bases," said Jonathan Ashmore, a leading auditory neuroscientist based at University College London in Britain.

Their work has helped make the center, dating to 1967, one of the biggest nationwide. About a dozen other universities have hearing research centers with at least three faculty members. Only about five have 10 or more. OHSU's department of otolaryngology - an ear, nose and throat specialty - is No. 2 in funding from the National Institutes of Health, at $10 million a year, right behind Johns Hopkins University.

For the scientists, it's not been easy. Their hearing loss has complicated their lives. They struggled to follow their teachers and professors, keep up in graduate school and complete their post-doctoral training. They had difficulty taking notes. They suffered from a sense of isolation and found it tough to make friends.

But they found a home at the Oregon Hearing Research Center. They're not alone in their disability, and they have a personal motivation to succeed. Oregon's Snow Camp For Youth Deaf Students

Youth snow camp held for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, instructors communicate with campers by American Sign Language.

BEND, Oregon -- People who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing have to navigate a world of sound, where the primary means of communication is spoken language. But or one week a year, that all changes.

This weekend at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon Adaptive Sports hosted a snow camp. This was the third annual camp held just for teenagers and young adults who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Although the ski and snowboarding skill levels vary between volunteers, they do all have one thing in common. They are all fluent in American Sign Language.

With the help of an interpreter, we talked to some of those taking part in this special program. Will Roach is a volunteer instructor and one of the people behind the idea.

"We thought about all the Deaf students who are isolated, and we thought, 'Why not get them all together, and we could have instructors who are Deaf, so they could have direct communication?'"Roach said.

For the participants, communication makes all the difference.

"Well, Will was teaching me, and it's really nice to talk to other Deaf people here. That's really the best part," said one of the campers.

Officer coordinator and instructor Cara Frank knows how important this camp is first0hand. She was born Deaf.

"It really has a special place in my heart," she said. "Just having another role model that you can relate to growing up, it's really key. And that's what this camp is about."

Everyone we talked to said they will absolutely be back next year.

Oregon Association of the Deaf has a variety of other programs. Their goal is to provide outdoor recreation experiences to people with physical and cognitive disabilities. More information can be found at oregonadaptivesports.org.

"The Doctors" Shines a spotlight on dogs for the Deaf, Oct 5th, 2012.

A Southern Oregon non-profit showed a national TV audience just how much it is making a difference in people's lives today. This as Central Point's Dogs for the Deaf was invited to be a special guest on NBC's syndicated show, "The Doctors."

NBC5's Laura Cavanaugh reports. The Rogue Valley's own Carrie Brooks took center stage in front of a national television audience Thursday on the set of NBC's "The Doctors." The certified dog trainer demonstrated how highly trained dogs, like Bonsai, help work sounds for those with hearing loss.

University Students Educated Of The Audism

Audism - Understanding its meaning and implications in the Deaf community.

EUGENE, Oregon -- You've heard of sexism, racism, anti-Semitism... How about audism? Audism is discrimination based on the ability or inability to hear. Students met members of the local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.

Johanna Larson, University of Oregon, American Sign Language Instructor, moderated a screening of the documentary film, Audism Unveiled, and a panel discussion hosting members of our local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.

The film and discussion facilitated an examination of the rich and complex identities of Deaf Culture through "real life experiences from Deaf people of varied social, racial, and educational backgrounds-showing how audism does lasting and harmful damage." The event also included live transcription for the signing impaired.

PORTLAND, Oregon -- Portland police release video of an ASL interpreter Occupy Portland protester injured during camp eviction. Justin James Bridges, a local musician and American Sign Language translator for Occupy Portland, was allegedly assaulted by the police during the camp clean out on Sunday afternoon.

Many Portlanders know Bridges well, as he performs at hemp festivals, freedom rallies and has been a fixture at Occupy Portland since the beginning. His story does not jive with that of the Portland Police Bureau news release.
