The Super Bowl may be over, but we're just now getting to our favorite football event of the year: the NFL Bad Lip Reading.

The Bad Lip Reading YouTube channel excels at making it seem like real people are saying the darndest things, and the channel has been uploading NFL Bad Lip Readings since 2013.

This year's montage gives us New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady saying, "I hate cats. Why they gotta pee in the little tub?" And if that alone doesn't sell you, you can also watch a referee say, "Your face is a face I've been avoiding for seven years. If I have to look back at it, I'll break down for sure."

Thankfully, coaches and fans are not immune from the Bad Lip Reading treatment. And don't worry, there are plenty of highlights of Super Bowl champ Patrick Mahomes, even if they're not the kind we're used to seeing him in.

Deaf Mascot Makes The Crowds Cheer

How a Deaf high school mascot moves the crowd to his beat.

PORTLAND, Maine -- On the court, the Portland High School Bulldogs are reigning state champions. But, during most games this season, the crowd often finds its inspiration from freshman Kamron King, the team’s Deaf mascot.

On the court, the Portland High School Bulldogs are reigning Maine state basketball champions. But, during most games this season, the crowd often finds it inspiration from what's happening on the sidelines.

Freshman Kamron King is the team's mascot and "sixth man." Dressed in an over-sized gray Bulldog outfit, King often runs the sidelines getting the crowd into a frenzy. He's also Deaf and can't hear any of it.

"Being a mascot is kind of a very cool job to do for the school and I kinda love it," King told NBC News.

Deaf from birth, the 15-year-old student has mastered sign language and how to lip read and speak. He says he uses his eyes and his energy to get the crowd fired up. To compensate for what he cannot hear, he observes the movements of those in the bleachers, getting a feel for the emotion of the moment. "I try to get the crowd louder [so] that they know I am supporting them," said King.

At home, he's affectionately known as "Kam the Ham." His parents, though, were initially wary of the idea of their hearing impaired son -- who like many deaf children struggled with balance -- taking on the mascot role.

"I thought, good Lord, he's gonna put this thing on and be out in front of a hundred people and trip and fall over," said Michael King, Kamron's father.

Those concerns proved to be misplaced. Kamron has thrived this season and made a little history as well, becoming Portland High School's first ever Deaf mascot.

"He brings up all the spirit," said a team cheerleader. "He makes everyone happy and it just makes the entire experience better."

Kamron's achievements behind the mask have also served as an inspiration to other Deaf young people, says John Jones, director of instruction at the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

"I think he's setting a great example for other students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing who may be reluctant to try new things," Jones told NBC News.

For Kamron, though, his disability is "no big deal." He says he usually is more concerned with staying cool in the furry costume.

VICE: Today, more than 40 percent of American children born Deaf receive cochlear implants. The technology effectively restores hearing by bypassing the ear and delivering audio information directly to the brain. The vast majority of Deaf children who are implanted develop hearing and speaking skills comparable to their hearing peers, thus allowing them the option to “mainstream” into normal schools in the United States.

Deaf education in the U.S. has gone through many phases. American Sign Language (ASL) is currently the dominant mode of instruction in Deaf schools, but there have been periods where ASL was banned and students were forced to speak and lip-read, an ineffective approach known as Oralism. ASL has now gained legitimacy and been shown to include the deep grammar and syntax found in spoken languages. It is also the wellspring of Deaf Culture, a proud community wary of historical attempts to assimilate them into a hearing world.

As more parents opt for cochlear implants, VICE News explores their impact on the medical condition that gave rise to a cultural identity.

His mother, determined to keep him in the hearing community, worked with him an hour a day for four years as part of an intensive regime of speech therapy. Sometimes it took him 10 minutes to learn a single word. He didn't start to catch up to his peers until eight years later.

But today at 54, Steyger is a prominent auditory neuroscientist. At Oregon Health & Science University, he's part of a team of researchers who are studying the auditory system in hopes of helping others who can't hear.

The 10 faculty members in OHSU's Oregon Hearing Research Center are considered trailblazers among their peers.

"I look at their program as a very unique one in the world because of the breadth and the depth of their auditory science and the high quality of the science that's done there," said Jennifer Stone, an auditory neuroscientist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The center also stands out in another way: It has five professors with hearing loss. Few other auditory research departments have even one scientist with a hearing disability. None has as many as OHSU, experts say.

Their varied biomedical backgrounds allow them to study every aspect of the auditory system, and their personal experiences inform their research.

"They've all got pretty high profiles and are covering lots of different bases," said Jonathan Ashmore, a leading auditory neuroscientist based at University College London in Britain.

Their work has helped make the center, dating to 1967, one of the biggest nationwide. About a dozen other universities have hearing research centers with at least three faculty members. Only about five have 10 or more. OHSU's department of otolaryngology - an ear, nose and throat specialty - is No. 2 in funding from the National Institutes of Health, at $10 million a year, right behind Johns Hopkins University.

For the scientists, it's not been easy. Their hearing loss has complicated their lives. They struggled to follow their teachers and professors, keep up in graduate school and complete their post-doctoral training. They had difficulty taking notes. They suffered from a sense of isolation and found it tough to make friends.

But they found a home at the Oregon Hearing Research Center. They're not alone in their disability, and they have a personal motivation to succeed. Finland School Fined In Deaf Discrimination Case

Deaf News: Helsinki Design School fined in Deaf discrimination case.

HELSINKI -- The Helsinki District Court has slapped a fine 1,200-euro on the head of a private Helsinki Design School for retracting its offer of a place to a Deaf applicant. The court found the institution and its principal guilty of discrimination but the defendants say they are considering an appeal.

Back in 2014, privately-run Helsinki Design School turned away design student Oskari Salomaa, citing insufficient resources to provide interpreter services. The institution had previously accepted Salomaa for the year-long program, but retracted the place when it learned of his special needs.

On Monday, the Helsinki District Court ruled that the school had violated non-discrimination laws in refusing Salomaa the opportunity to study.

The court imposed a fine of 1,280 euros on the school CEO and also called on the institution and its chief executive to compensate Salomaa to the tune of 8,000 euros. The defendants are also required to settle Salomaa’s legal expenses, which amounted to nearly 8,500 euros.

Salomaa said that he was pleased with the outcome.

"This means that sign language users have a right to be part of Finnish society. I won’t appeal the decision," Salomaa said after the ruling.

Lawyer for the defendants, Jaana Juutilainen said that she was disappointed with the court’s decision.

"It’s very likely that we will see fit to take the case to the Court of Appeal," Juutilainen remarked. Read The Full Story

Student Uses Hearing Loss To Motivate Others

Deaf News: A Scott County college student who was born Deaf is achieving things others thought were impossible.

KNOXVILLE, TN -- After two surgeries that allowed her to hear and speak, for the first time she is hoping all of her accomplishments will show people hearing loss doesn’t have to hold anyone back.

WATE 6 On Your Side spoke with the student and her mom about the hearing implants that changed her life.

Before she had implant surgery, she tried to use hearing aids because if we could get benefit from that then would’ve been wonderful but unfortunately the hearing aids just didn’t work for her,” said Melissa Roberts Cheyenne’s Mother.

18-year-old Cheyenne Roberts received her first cochlear implant from Advance Bionics at just 15-months-old, and her second when she was 12. Afterwards, she had to learn how to hear and speak for the very first time.

“I was a cheerleader and I was able to hear everybody else cheer and hear what was going on at the game so cochlear implants just really helped me,” said Cheyenne Roberts... Read The Full Story.
