ASL Terp Rocks The Guinness World Record

American Sign Language interpreter keeping up with the fastest rapper ever deserves her own title.

CHICAGO, IL -- At 280 words per minute, Twista clocks in as the fastest rapper of all time, so when sign language interpreter, Amber Galloway Gallego was able to keep up, word for word, with the Chicago rapper at a recent concert, the Internet was more than impressed.

In a video clip that deservedly went viral, fans can watch Amber Galloway Gallego not only keep pace with Twista (whom FiveThirtyEight declared the fastest rapper of all time in 2014 based on speed and words per minute) but emphatically bring the heat with the dexterity of her signing skills.

This isn’t the first time that Galloway Gallego, a certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for nearly two decades and advocate for equal access, has gotten some major love online for her work as a sign language interpreter; her distinctive moves have shared the stage with artists like Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar, the latter’s concert giving her one of her most memorable viral moments when she captured the essence of his expletive-ridden verse on A$AP Rocky’s “F*ckin’ Problems” at Lollapalooza in 2013.

Twista's sign language interpreter hitting every single word he fires off on stage is 10/10 content. She needs a Guinness World Record as seen on pic.twitter.com/8GwEaA1Oza.

Daughter Signs Rock Lyrics To Deaf Dad

Canadian daughter signs song lyrics for her Deaf dad at rock concert goes viral on social media.

EDMONTON, Alberta -- A video of a teen daughter using American Sign Language to communicate the lyrics of a rock song to her dad has touched millions.

Karri Carberry, 19, signed the Three Days Grace song "Just Like You" to her father, Darrin Carberry, at the band's concert in Canada on Dec. 12. Carberry is Hearing, but her dad is Deaf, she told "Good Morning America."

"It was our first concert together," said Carberry of Edmonton, Alberta. "I feel absolutely shocked and amazed at all of the views and responses we have been getting! It’s an amazing feeling and we’re both very happy that everyone around the world is enjoying it so much."

As Carberry and her dad rocked out, fellow concertgoer Julianne Cragg captured the moment.

Cragg shared the video on Facebook, where it's been viewed 17 million times. Cragg told "GMA" that at first, she wasn't intentionally filming the father-daughter duo, but that she was glad she caught it on camera.

"I'm thrilled that it's made a few people happy," Cragg said.

Three Days Grace even commented on the video, writing on Facebook, "This is the coolest thing on the internet right now!!! so sweet."

American Sign Language Interpreter Poser

Unqualified ASL poser with criminal past dupes police at Seminole Heights killer news conference in Tampa, Florida.

TAMPA, Florida -- Tampa police spokesman Steve Hegarty says a lack of due diligence allowed a career criminal to take center stage as an American Sign Language interpreter last week during a hastily-called news conference where the police chief and mayor announced they had captured a suspect in the Seminole Heights murders.

Even worse, Hegarty says, is the sign language poser Derlyn Roberts blew the assignment with a gibberish-filled interpretation broadcast on live television.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

“My major concern is that she was representing our department and didn’t do a good job,” Hegarty said.

Hegarty says Roberts presented herself as an interpreter for the Deaf just before the news conference. In that hectic moment, he says he failed to ask the right questions to determine whether she was from Purple Communications which the city typically hires for sign language duties.

Rachelle Settambrino, who teaches sign language at the University of South Florida, says interpreter Roberts signed the following: “Fifty-one hours ago, zero 12 22 (indecipherable) murder three minutes in 14 weeks ago in old (indecipherable) murder four five 55,000 plea 10 arrest murder bush (indecipherable) three age 24.”

Another USF professor says it made her stomach turn.

“I was sick at the idea of all the other interpreters that could have been standing there and been signing the information clearly. What in the world was this person doing out there, waving her hands,” said Betti Bonni.

Roberts got out of state prison last year after serving years for organized fraud.

Efforts to reach her by 8 On Your Side were unsuccessful on Monday. Neighbors say she claims to have sign language skills, but it’s not clear that she has any ASL credentials.

American sign language interpreter becomes unexpected star at Hurricane Irma press conference in Florida.

MIAMI, Florida -- A sign language interpreter provided a few moments of levity as Floridians prepare for one of the worst storms in its history.

The emotive interpreter flailed his hands and jerked his face as Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave a briefing on Hurricane Irma on Saturday morning.

The man, dressed in a blue suit and a dark shirt, was seen at one point sticking his tongue out with his thumbs pointed upward. During other moments he made terrified faces as Scott warned of powerful winds and deadly storm surges.

Some Twitter users expressed guilty humor over the interpreter’s show-stealing moves.

Man incorrectly interprets sign language during Manatee County evacuation briefing at Hurricane Irma press conference in Florida.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- Watch the video of a man incorrectly interpreting a message from Florida evacuation officials in sign language has prompted harsh criticism from the Deaf community. Officials for the Manatee County Emergency Operations Center delivered an evacuation briefing to residents on Friday at 12 p.m. ET as a man standing next to the podium attempted to sign the message for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers, but misinterpreted officials' words.

Here's captions to show you what the "fake sign language interpreter" was actually signing.

Manatee County Marine Rescue Chief Joe Westerman confirmed to ABC News that Marshall Greene, a current lifeguard for the county, was the man who attempted to interpret Friday's briefing.

- Florida's ASL Interpreter Steals The Show

VisCom, a professional sign language interpreting service that serves southwest and central Florida, told ABC News that Manatee County is a regular vendor of theirs for a variety of services with the sheriff's department and the courts. However, VisCom owner Charlene McCarthy told ABC News that no one from Manatee County reached out to request an interpreter ahead of that Friday briefing.

Additionally, McCarthy said she called the Manatee County Emergency Management team to express her disappointment after watching the video, adding that her company was available to accommodate them up for future press conferences as early as the next morning, but said the office never followed up to book an official interpreter.

VisCom said the man in question is not fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), alleging that, "[He] definitely doesn't have the skill set to function in the role of an interpreter," McCarthy said.

The Daily Moth, a Deaf News agency that delivers videos using ASL, reported on the video, criticizing officials for not using a certified interpreter.

Alex Abenchuchan, The Daily Moth's Deaf Host, confirmed in his own report that Greene's interpretations were incorrect, writing in a response to the incident on Facebook that allegedly Greene only knows "some signs because of a Deaf Sibling."

The Manatee County Facebook page showed other press conferences after Friday's noon briefing that no longer included an interpreter.

Manatee County Emergency Operations did not immediately respond to ABC News's request for comment as they continue working on hurricane efforts. Greene did not respond to ABC News' request for comment.

In 2013, a "fake" sign language interpreter stood next to former President Barack Obama on stage during Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, later raising questions over Secret Service security concerns.

The South African government and the interpreter himself, Thamsanqa Jantjie, claimed he had a schizophrenic break down that caused him to see illusions during the event, impacting his attempted signing.

Deaf Japanese Tourist Denied Terp at Airport

Discrimination complaint filed after Deaf Japanese woman detained at Honolulu airport by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

HONOLULU, Hawaii -- An incident at the airport has the American Civil Liberties Union filing a discrimination complaint against a government agency.

The ACLU says a Deaf woman from Japan, who asked to remain anonymous, was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials on Jan. 31 shortly after landing in Honolulu, Hawaii.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The ACLU says during that time, she repeatedly asked for an American Sign Language interpreter, but was instead forced to communicate by reading lips and writing.

During her overnight detention, the ACLU says she was handcuffed with her hands behind her back, which took away her ability to communicate.

“I was so scared and felt alone,” she said. “For people with deafness, being cut off from our ways of communicating is terrifying. I have traveled a lot, but have never experienced anything like this at any airport ever. With this complaint, I just want to make sure that other Deaf people coming through Hawaii’s airports are treated with basic respect and dignity, and that disabilities are accommodated.”

“The minimum dignity that you can afford someone is just the ability for them to communicate with you, and instead of doing that, they just denied her that right,” said ACLU legal director Mateo Caballero. “The ACLU’s complaint demands a full investigation and the training of custom and border agents so that other Deaf individuals do not experience the same traumatic detention practices as our client did.”

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman released the following statement in response:

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has received the complaint and will address these accusations once our investigation is completed. CBP takes accusations of mistreatment against travelers with disabilities very seriously. CBP officers receive extensive training in disability awareness and treat all travelers with disabilities with dignity, respect and professionalism.”

ASL vlog covers on the ASL Terp fiasco of Amber Galloway Gallego.

The video producer by openly Deaf Gay Ricky Taylor aka Ridor9th, also known as one of the most controversial bloggers in the Deaf community.

This brief vlog focuses on the fiasco of Amber Galloway Gallego on why I said I found her to be annoying. It has nothing to do with jealousy or crab's theory. It has so much to do with Deaf disempowerment regarding previous vlog.

Deaf Woman Fights Miami Hospital For Terp

Deaf News: Deaf woman fights Miami Hospital for interpreter in Florida.

MIAMI, FL -- Next week, next month or maybe next year -- she does not know exactly when -- Cheylla Silva will need to visit her local hospital again. And when that happens, Silva, who is Deaf, doesn't want to struggle just to communicate with doctors and nurses as she has the last two dozen times.

Silva communicates in American Sign Language, and she says she has labored to convey and comprehend the most basic information at Baptist Hospital Miami because the hospital has refused to provide an interpreter.

Instead, she has been directed to a Video Remote Interpreting system or VRI for communication. But the remote video service crashes, the feed can be choppy and it's hard to see when she's lying in a hospital bed with tubes in her arms or when a medical team has crowded into her room.

"Why does everything have to be a struggle?" Silva, 34, asked through an interpreter. "I just want to be able to communicate like anybody else."

On Wednesday, Silva was in federal court in Miami to argue that Baptist Hospital's refusal to provide a live interpreter violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. She filed the case against Baptist in 2014 along with John Paul Jebian, a Miami man who also is Deaf. A U.S. District Court judge dismissed the case a year later but Silva and Jebian are appealing.

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division also weighed in on the case, filing a brief in support of Silva and Jebian's claims, and urging the federal appeals court to reverse the dismissal by U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams.

The appeal centers on whether the remote video service -- which allows an interpreter to translate via video screen -- provides equal access and effective communication for a deaf patient as required by the ADA, said Matthew Dietz, an attorney with the Disability Independence Group, a nonprofit advocate for the disabled representing Silva and Jebian.

Dietz argued that system may work in some hospital settings, such as one-on-one meeting with a nurse or doctor, but it is ineffective and inadequate in others, such as during an MRI or X-ray, or during child birth or group therapy sessions.

He said Baptist's refusal to dedicate a high-speed, wide bandwidth Internet connection for the service also means blurry and choppy images, and repeated disconnections.

Deaf patients, Dietz said, "deserve to know what's happening to them."

Deaf Interpreter Goes Viral On Social Media

Hurricane Matthew approaching South Carolina, Haley's sign language interpreter's flair gains attention of social media.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina -- For the last several days, standing inches away from South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley at her emergency briefings, you've likely seen Jason Hurdich.

He's the sign language interpreter who's just off to the side of the governor when she's speaking. Even though the New York native has only been in South Carolina for two months, it's his job is to make sure that everyone watching understands Hurricane Matthew's potential impact on South Carolina.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"A storm is very serious so I need to make sure that i am culturally matching what the Deaf community needs when they get their information," he said.

He's been interpreting for about 15 years. But as you're listening to the governor and watching Hurdich interpret for the Deaf community, he's watching Shonna McGee.

"I've worked with Jason for over 10 years and what I do in situations like this is I take the spoken information and I interpret it to him, and he clarifies and expands when necessary for the Deaf community to have clarity."

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Hurdich is Deaf, so in this situation, the interpreter has an interpreter. So he translates what McGee hears.

It's a unique situation which means critical information doesn't get lost in translation for the Deaf community.

"Having someone who is a native to your language, giving them the information in their language is always the best, especially in critical situations like a hurricane," McGee said.

"My goal is really to empower the Deaf community to really thrive and encourage them to do that and improve their quality of life," Hurdich said. "The South Carolina Deaf community really needs Deaf leaders and nationwide also."

Interpreting is not Hurdich's full time job. he currently works as a counselor for vocational rehab in Charleston.
