Deaf Son Locked In Chains For Decade

Deaf Chinese son has been chained and locked up in a stone house for decade by his own mother.

DENGFENG, China -- 'I had no choice': Mum admits locking up Deaf son for decade as police discover man in chains, mum Yue Rong said her son Wang Zhiqiang, now 41, was born unable to hear or speak and as the years went on, his mental disorders got worse.

Heartbreaking footage shows a Deaf man sat in chains after his own mother locked him inside a stone hut for more than 10 years.

Wang Zhiqiang, now 41, was born unable to hear or speak, his mum Yue Rong, 77, revealed.

But as a child he still showed signs of intellect, so his family sent him to a special needs boarding school.

Only his time there proved to be a traumatic experience after he was severely bullied.

As a result Wang Zhiqiang, who lives in Xuanhua in Dengfeng City in Henan, China, developed psychological issues.

And as his poverty-stricken family could not afford to seek help and treatment Zhiqiang's mental disorders got worse.

His mother said: "He wasn't able to go to school any more, and his condition worsened while staying at home.

"It reached a point where he was attacking other villagers."

Yue explained when her husband passed away she found it difficult to cope which is why she resorted to chaining up her son.

She added: "When his father was still alive, he was able to take care of him, but when his dad passed away 12 years ago, I couldn't handle him on my own."

"I had no choice but to chain him up and lock him in the room. It's been more than 10 years."

Zhiqiang's sister, Wang Shufen, cries every time she sees her brother in the animal-like state.

Footage of their most recent meeting shows her sobbing as she inspects the marks on her brother's arms made by the wrought-iron shackles.

Now in her 50s, Shufen said: "I wish it were me chained up and that my brother were free instead.

"You never saw the times, while he was still lucid, when he begged my family to let him out."

Deaf Sister Locked In Closet For Seven Years

Woman kept Deaf sister locked in closet for seven years while stealing benefits.

CORUNNA, Michigan -- Candy Lawson, 46, was gave her adoptive sister Diana Churchill little food, water or clothing during her seven-year ordeal in the tiny 4ft by 8ft space. She was freed in 2015 when she was discovered at the house in Corunna, by construction worker, Robert Lamar, while he carried out works on the house.

Lawson was meant to be caring for her sister following their mother’s death 10 years ago, but instead subjected her to years of abuse. The prosecutor said: ‘I think the easy answer for us is we think the motive was the benefits she was getting, the social security money that she was getting.

‘It’s too bad that somebody can be on the radar with the SOS Administration that there is no protocol in place for actual face-to-face follow up, to figure out whether or not this person is alive and well, and actually getting the benefit of their funds.

‘In this case, obviously the system let this woman down.’

Diana’s brother, who had the same cognitive and physical impairments as her, died at the age of 33 weighing just 60lbs.

Police are now investigating whether she was also responsible for his death but no charges have been brought.

Lawson claimed that the closet was a room and the reason she locked her in was to prevent her from walking off in the night.

She also said that she hadn’t deprived her of food and was free to walk around the house.

However she was malnourished and so dirty that her skin reacted badly when nurses used soap to try and clean her.

Diana is now being cared for by the state and is doing much better according to Wnem.

Speaking about the case, Mr Lamar who found her said: ‘Horrible really. It was disgusting how she left her sister. Someone that doesn’t care about another human’s life.’ She will be sentenced on October 27.

Deaf Woman Loses Legal Battle To Be Juror

Deaf woman loses High Court bid to serve on jury in Australia, claims “a smack in the face” for the Deaf community.

BRISBANE, AU -- The Independent: The High Court in Australia has ruled to deny a woman the chance to become the country’s first Deaf jury member, a decision she later described as “a smack in the face” for the Deaf community.

In 2012, a registrar told Gaye Lyons from Queensland she should be excused from jury duty as a sign language interpreter could not be sworn into the conference room, according to state law.

The 69-year-old can lip read but needs an interpreter to communicate, and decided to take her case against the Queensland government to the High Court.

The court decided to uphold state law and said the presence of an interpreter in a deliberation room would cause “an incurable irregularity” which could affect the outcome of a case, resulting in the dismissal of Ms Lyons’ appeal.

Queensland attorney general Yvette D’Ath said the confidentiality of jury deliberations and the right to a fair trial were “among the most fundamental tenets of Australia’s justice system”, according to AP Australia.

"We're the same as everybody else, we're human, we have kids, we go to work, we drive cars, we pay mortgages - I was just fuming because I could not have equal access to this," Ms Lyons told reporters outside court.

"Why should the powers that be decide what's right for me, why should they decide what I can and can't do? It just made me livid, I was seething about the whole thing.”

Ms Lyons has repeatedly cited her detailed interest in the law and said jury duty was “something I really wanted to take part in”.

"After five years of struggle, just fighting for access for the Australian Deaf community, it felt like a slap in the face.”

"For them [the High Court] to say that interpreters could not relay information accurately, that was the living end, that was the last straw for me. Deaf people should not be treated differently. The High Court does not see that,” she added.

In 2011, a Deaf woman served on an inquest jury in the United Kingdom after several legal challenges found Deaf people can fully comprehend courtroom discourse and jury deliberations through interpreters.

Exemptions for Deaf people carrying out jury service in criminal trials were removed in Ireland and the UK after legal challenges during the 2000s. In the United States, they have been serving on juries since 1979.

New Zealand is another country where sign language interpreters are employed by courts to help Deaf jurors contribute to trials.

Audism Free America Video Letter To AG Bell

American Sign Language Version - Audism Free America Video Letter to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf.

WASHINGTON DC -- Audism Free America (AFA) share a video letter to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf (AG Bell) in American Sign Language with all of you. Recently, there is an appalling wave of reaction by the Deaf community in regards to AG Bell's response to Washington Post's "The Reliable Source" who accuses Nyle DiMarco dispelling the myths about deafness.

Dear President Meredith K Sugar,

We, Audism Free America, are writing in response to your response to the Washington Post article regarding Mr. Nyle DiMarco, in which you stated; "It is our hope to dispel the myths about deafness.” It has become apparent that by now you have most likely seen the many letters from members of the Deaf community, and as well as from academic researchers who have revealed the truth about your misinformation showing that Deaf children, from both Deaf and Hearing families, have clearly thrived when exposed to American Sign Language early in life.

This is not the first time that the AG Bell Association has imposed misinformation and worked to assert to the general public reinforcing the attitudes of audism and linguicism. In 2009, we presented to your former President Graham, along with other AG Bell representatives, a list of demands at a sit down face to face meeting. These demands were taken to your Board and rejected. The demands stated that:

1. the AG Bell Association and Academy cease and desist from denying Deaf infants, children, and their families the right to a natural and fully accessible language.

2. the AG Bell Association cease and desist from misinforming the public and the media about ASL and Deaf people. The AG Bell Association has not retracted its letter to Pepsi objecting to the commercial featuring ASL in a positive light and continually paints Deaf ASL users as unsuccessful and dependent.

3. the AG Bell Association cease and desist its incestuous relationship with cochlear implant manufacturers and join the AFA in calling for an independent and impartial study of the physical, psychological, and social impact of cochlear implants on infants, children and adolescents.

The second item listed can now be amended to demand that the AG Bell Association, additionally, retract your statements concerning the response to Mr. Nyle DiMarco in the Washington Post.

If you are truly concerned about dispelling myths, you may wish to focus on your founder. A.G. Bell, the man, through publicized reports was an eugenicist, xenophobe, and audist along with recent reports that he was also a thief and plagiarist (see D. Baynton, H. Lane, and S. Shulman, as well as Bell’s own writings).

Your Association should be held accountable for the many Deaf children and their families who have been deprived of an accessible language in their early years which have resulted in negative impacts psychologically, educationally, and economically, (see Humphries, et al., 2012 and Penicaud, et al, 2013).

As a Deaf grassroots organization, we are informing you that your organization, made up of primarily Hearing people, has NO right to misrepresent Deaf people in the media and NO right to actively promote the denial of human and linguistic rights of Deaf children.

We, Deaf community members, our families and allies are proud to have Mr. Nyle DiMarco as a role model and advocate for our future generations of Deaf children. If you need further evidence that there is a thriving Deaf community who will ensure that Deaf children will CONTINUE TO BE DEAF, please see the social media campaigns #whyIsign and #iamdeaf.

Finally, this letter is to inform you that AFA will now host another rally at your annual conference in Denver, Colorado. Please let us know if YOU would like to meet with US prior to the conference in order to retract your letters and issue a formal apology. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Let Freedom Roll,

Jason Tozier: Alexander Graham Bell thinks that he has more influence in America folklore than Santa Claus. It is painful to watch the various periods of hate as they unfold and take shape. It is indicative of a change in the world of hate when bigots begin to form mergers between themselves and change their policies to match the power. Bullied Deaf Boy Forced To Leave School

Son James was mercilessly picked on in the playground because he has a hearing impairment at mainstreaming school.

DUNDEE, UK -- The Sunday Post: Chris said teachers did little to tackle the problem when James was subjected to name-calling by other pupils.

Eventually, Chris and wife Samantha were forced to take the step of removing him from the school due to the “lack of understanding from teachers”.

“People are ignorant – that’s not going to change,” said the former striker, who has tried to teach his son how to deal with the name-calling.

He said: “It is wrong for children to tease and bully but it happens through school and as much as we’d like it to, it will probably never be eradicated.

“I prepare James for this. What I couldn’t understand was the lack of understanding from his teachers at his previous school.

“They did not know how to treat him because of his hearing aids.”

Following abuse at the hands of other children, Chris was forced to carefully explain to James that he was happy with him just the way he his.

“You find out who your friends are,” is the difficult advice he gave him.“Kids have to work things out for themselves,” he added.

Since placing James in another school, he has flourished and is now an accomplished hockey player, much to his dad’s delight.

Chris said: “Going to his new school totally transformed him as a person.

“He was depressed and lacked self-belief and it was because of the common sense and logical understanding of the teachers at his new school that he began to build his confidence.”

The now 14-year-old’s early life was beset by problems.

James was born prematurely at 28 weeks in September

2001 at The Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow, weighing just 3lb.

He was so tiny, Chris could hold him in the palm of his hand.

After weeks of specialist care, he was eventually allowed to go home.

However, Samantha rushed James to the former Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow 10 days later when he fell seriously ill with a respiratory virus.

He was choking and having terrifying episodes where he would stop breathing.

She took him to hospital but while in the waiting room he stopped breathing again.

He was rushed to a side room where doctors resuscitated him. Medics said he could have died if he hadn’t got there when he did.

Chris, 43, said: “My wife had this feeling and she turned round and James was going blue.

“They rushed him into the hospital and he had gone. They got him back.

“He was in a long time. They resuscitated him. He was a tiny baby. It was the most worrying thing that has ever happened.

“Had we lived any further away we might not have got there in time. Another minute and he might not have been here. We were told that.”

Doctors said James was suffering from RSV – a common virus with cold-like symptoms.

Healthy children tend to shrug it off, but it can be life-threatening for premature babies.

The star was in Spain at the time preparing for a crucial UEFA Cup tie with Valencia when Samantha called to say James was fighting for his life.

He immediately tried to get a flight home, but couldn’t.

In the end he chose not to go to the match but instead stayed at the hotel where Samantha could call to give him updates.

He flew home early next day and went to the intensive care ward where he and Samantha kept a bedside vigil.

The footballer said it was the most worrying time of his life.

“James was on life support. It was touch-and-go,” he revealed.

“You hope, you sit and pray and think about things.

Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access

According to the researchers, the cascading impact of hearing loss on access to school communication.

Fragmented Hearing, Effort, Listening, Comprehension, Fatigue and Pace of Learning. Hearing Loss is invisible. Someone observing a student with hearing loss may believe that he or she has an attention problem or a learning disability as hearing loss can also impact perceiving, language processing, processing speed, memory and attention. Unlike ADHD or LD, learning issues caused by hearing loss are not due to a disorder (an issue with brain processes). Instead the learning issues are secondary to delays because the child has incomplete access to speech occurring around him or her, especially soft speech or completely understanding someone talking from a distance further than 3-6 feet.

Fragmented Hearing: Our educational system is based on the assumption that students in the classroom will perceive, and therefore understand, all of what the teacher is saying. When much information received in school is fragmented because of hearing loss, learning consequences are likely. Even with the latest hearing technology, normal hearing ability is not restored by hearing devices. Even aided thresholds of 20 dB HL will cause soft speech, high pitch speech sounds and unemphasized brief words to be undetected or too quiet to process.

It is not unusual for children with hearing loss to have a 20% ‘listening gap’ as compared to class peers who may miss only 5% of information 1. The image shows a story about Fran the frog who has a sore throat. As you can see, comprehending the meaning of the story is impacted when 20% of the information missing. Even if a child is able to perform well in a quiet setting using hearing devices, a classroom setting is typically noisy, with fast-paced peer-to-peer conversations and teachers that move about the classroom, causing significant listening challenges. These conditions typically result in barriers to access.

Increased Effort: Effort refers to the exertion of physical or mental power. Listening effort refers to the attention necessary to understand speech. Ease of listening is the perceive difficulty of the listening situation by the listener. Even low noise in the environment will interact with the fragmented hearing to interfere with their speech understanding. Children with hearing loss work harder than their peers to listen leaving fewer cognitive resources to understand speech in the classroom as compared to class peers.

CSS Movies presents "Alone In A Hearing World" shows true to life scenarios of a young Deaf boy growing up in a hearing world. With family members who can't communicate and continuous misunderstandings by his teachers and coaches, he is forced to live in a world of isolation. However, when he pleas for his Mothers understanding and falls short, he ends up in the only place he seems to find acceptance.

It has been assumed that speechreading will help children to compensate for what is missed due to fragmented hearing. Research results make it clear that speechreading (lipreading) help children to compensate for what was missed...read more: http://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/pdf.

Finland School Fined In Deaf Discrimination Case

Deaf News: Helsinki Design School fined in Deaf discrimination case.

HELSINKI -- The Helsinki District Court has slapped a fine 1,200-euro on the head of a private Helsinki Design School for retracting its offer of a place to a Deaf applicant. The court found the institution and its principal guilty of discrimination but the defendants say they are considering an appeal.

Back in 2014, privately-run Helsinki Design School turned away design student Oskari Salomaa, citing insufficient resources to provide interpreter services. The institution had previously accepted Salomaa for the year-long program, but retracted the place when it learned of his special needs.

On Monday, the Helsinki District Court ruled that the school had violated non-discrimination laws in refusing Salomaa the opportunity to study.

The court imposed a fine of 1,280 euros on the school CEO and also called on the institution and its chief executive to compensate Salomaa to the tune of 8,000 euros. The defendants are also required to settle Salomaa’s legal expenses, which amounted to nearly 8,500 euros.

Salomaa said that he was pleased with the outcome.

"This means that sign language users have a right to be part of Finnish society. I won’t appeal the decision," Salomaa said after the ruling.

Lawyer for the defendants, Jaana Juutilainen said that she was disappointed with the court’s decision.

"It’s very likely that we will see fit to take the case to the Court of Appeal," Juutilainen remarked. Read The Full Story

Teachers of Iowa School for the Deaf Face Firing

Deaf News: Exclusive interview with Deaf teachers of Iowa School For The Deaf face firing: NBC report.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA -- Teachers with a combined 40 years’ experience have been suspended and could be fired at the Iowa School for the Deaf. The teachers are shocked and question the motive and timing of the personnel action.

Despite a bad report card on their teaching techniques, Tina Murdoch and Tricia Tighe say they never failed their Deaf students.

"Both of us put our heart and our soul into that school. We both were there on Sunday nights," said Murdoch. Though Iowa School for the Deaf Renewed their contracts last summer, both teachers received termination notices about four months later.

Tighe said, 'I'm really upset. They gave me a contract I don't know why they're firing me.”

Tighe taught four special education students and Murdoch had a class of Deaf fifth graders both teachers received similar letters recommending termination.

The letters contain a laundry list of at least two dozen reasons why administrators feel the teachers have short comings in the classroom; among the reasons school administrators cited failure to use methods to monitor student learning, failure to demonstrate competence in content and failure to enhance academic performance.

"After 25 years they're saying I'm not meeting teaching standards that I was meeting before. It does not make any sense," said Murdoch.

Tighe’s mid semester suspension also caused elementary aged special education students to be moved into the high school. That concerns the 7-year-old’s grandmother Kitty Eisenhauer.

"She has a new teacher, a new building a new environment and she's in the with high schoolers, I don't really care for that," said Eisenhauer.

A regents spokesman tells Six On Your Side the second grade class is in the high school, but they’re in their own room with no high school students except for a well supervised 45 minute period.

They are constantly supervised and safety is of primary concern, but Kitty says moving class after removing the teacher affects a special needs seven year old. She said, "Yes I have questions about why. Were there problems because I felt they were both great teachers."

The regents who oversee Iowa School for the Deaf won't comment on personnel matters. But two teachers can't suspend their feelings and say the recommend firings are a bad sign for the Deaf students they taught.

Deaf Self Portrait: This Machine Is A Human

Deaf Canadian activist, Landon Krentz on being Deaf: This machine is a human - Self-portrait to raise awareness about a life with CI.

Landon Krentz is a Vancouver-based arts and events management professional and Deaf-queer individual. He has created a series of social media self-portraits to raise awareness of issue that Deaf people face. This is the second self-portrait in his series.

Are we programmed to behave robotically in social environments?

The cochlear implant (or CI) received its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1990 and it has been controversial for over two decades. This machine had a significant impact on Deaf culture due to the perception of hearing people trying to force it on the community. The greater the force, the more some Deaf community members want to flip a table. For them, the CI is nothing but a computer inside a human body.

In this image, this person is the embodiment of a betrayal of the Deaf world, though Deaf culture remains a part of him.

His experience of Deafness is like a porcupine: when there are social dangers, a quill pricks him for every awkward encounter.

Every day, he is reminded of his interaction with Audisms and ensures that they’re comfortable with him, even though a large percentage of the hearing world will avoid Deaf people due to communication barriers.

He is often caught “checking out” of a conversation and, like a machine, nodding with a pseudo smile.

This bionic human experiences stigma and judgment from both Deaf people and the hearing world because he belongs to neither.

Though his Deaf identity is invisible, he has a choice: to hide or to reveal his beautiful self.

The CI may be a machine and technology will never be perfect. The gap between both worlds the Deaf and hearing worlds are great. It is up to you to decide to proceed with an open mind towards acceptance of all auditory binaries and spectrums.

Being Deaf Person Is Weirder Than You Thought

Society has traditionally treated Deaf people like garbage, 1 of the top 5 reasons life as a Deaf person is weirder than you thought.

There are over 500,000 Deaf people in the United States, but the only time we hear about Deaf Culture is when someone is making up sign language at presidential funerals, rioting, or teaching kids on Sesame Street.

As a result, the average person has no idea what being Deaf involves, and therefore life can get downright weird for anyone who can't hear like the rest of you. Well, I'm a sign language interpreter and an American Sign Language (ASL) graduate, and I'll try to give you a glimpse of how strange things can get...

#1. Society Has Traditionally Treated Deaf People Like Garbage.

For much of our history, society just didn't know what to do with Deaf people. In the B.C. era, the law of the Talmud denied Deaf people the right to own land, while St. Augustine in the early A.D.s made deafness a straight-up sin. It wasn't until the 1960s that interpreting for Deaf people was even a profession.

Before then, Deaf people relied on the help of family, teachers of Deaf people (like Helen Keller's Deaf-Blind teacher Anne Sullivan), and the occasional clergyman that learned some signs. If you didn't live in an area with a thriving Deaf community, you might as well be cut off from the world entirely.

Educators didn't have a problem with Deaf people until the 1880 Conference of Milan. A bunch of hearing people and one token Deaf guy got together in Italy to figure out just how Deaf people ought to be educated. You can sum up their conclusion as "Fuck sign language, just try real hard to speak." Even today, many Deaf people remember having their hands tied and wrists slapped to stop them from trying to sign.

This, as you can imagine, made life a lot more difficult for Deaf people and their families. From many (god-awful) parents' standpoint, it was easier to ship them off to a different country or just put them in an institution. To make matters worse, around the same time, Alexander Graham Bell was running amok.

The same guy who invented the telephone was actually an inventor/douchebag on par with Thomas Edison. And, like the douchiest bags of his day, Bell was really into the eugenics movement (Hitler found his work inspirational).

He spent his life pushing legislation that would force Deaf people to undergo surgery to make sure they couldn't have children together and make a "Deaf Race." Fearing this day, Bell pushed for the abolition of sign language because it brought Deaf people together. (Oddly enough, Bell's own mother and wife were Deaf. So yeah, probably some awkward holidays for that family.)

This should help explain why Deaf people are wary of anyone who claims to be able to "fix" them. Big-D Deaf people often oppose cochlear implants, and it isn't because they're anti-technology.

It's because they have a distinct culture that people have tried to wipe out. It's not easy feeling like you're doing a pretty damned good job of getting by in life, only to hear a whole group of people look at you and scream, "We have to stop any more unspeakable horrors like this from existing!"... TORONTO -- This special discusses the movement for a Deaf Superintendent in Ontario, Canada - George Postlethwait, our Board President, made several comments on the latest community concerns related to the Provincial Schools Branch - Superintendent selection process - #PSBsuperintendent2015.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

George Postlethwait is the President of the Ontario Association of the Deaf. This issue is regarding the hiring of the new Superintendent of the Provincial Schools Branch, although at this point in time we are unsure of where they are in the interview process.

Postlethwait want to share with you that the Ontario Association of the Deaf is in full support of Rose Etheridge's advocacy efforts for the next incumbent of the Superintendent to be a Deaf individual. Rose is the mother of two Deaf children. We fully endorse the work she has done to engage the community thus far.

Led by Rose Etheridge, a Deaf mother of Deaf children. She's saying now is the time for a #‎Deaf president. She's saying there has been no #‎DeafSuperintendent in Canada for the entire country's history.

[Clarification: PSB = Provincial School Branch, not Board.]

One by one, Canadians are mobilizing to demand a Deaf president and end audism for once and for all. There is no alternative. And we have much to learn from their fight against oppression.

Rose Etheridge on twitter: "Thank YOU to Deaf teachers and Canadian communities for supporting #‎DeafSuperintendent" ... she tweeted.
