This viral TikTok from a Deaf creator is moving hearing people to learn American Sign Language.
LOS ANGELES, California -- Deaf activist and TikToker, Chrissy Marshall's blog "The Essential Sign" shares experience on social media, she is raising awareness about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community and teaching hearing people sign language, one viral video at a time.
If you don't live with a disability, you may not appreciate how crucial and meaningful community and accessibility are - but one viral TikTok is demonstrating it perfectly.
Chrissy Marshall, a 19-year-old content creator in Los Angeles, was born hard of hearing and became profoundly Deaf in high school. Now, she makes content on YouTube and TikTok about her disability and American Sign Language.
One of those videos captures a "special" day she had recently. In the TikTok video, Marshall, looking happy and excited, recounts her day of encountering three people who signed to her in American Sign Language.
"The sun was shining, people were signing, and everything felt so fluid," Marshall told BuzzFeed News in an interview. "I thought I was being pranked or something, like cameras were going to pop out and ask about my day."
"The area has a big Deaf community," she added, "and I’m glad and inspired to see the impact it’s had on the greater community as a whole."
The video is making other people happy too, and it's encouraging them to learn American Sign Language.
"Oh my god. Today has been crazy," she says and signs in the video. "Today I went to three places and all three people signed."
She describes stopping at the bank, where a teller signed with her, then at Starbucks, where a Deaf barista signed, and then she grabbed a pretzel, where the worker also signed.
"Everyone signed! It was like a perfect world. It's like a utopia."
The TikTok was reuploaded to Twitter, where it went viral.
Marshall said her online platform has given her the opportunity to spread awareness about disability rights, American Sign Language, and deafness.
Her other videos cover what it's like to be Deaf. She also posts fun ones like American Sign Language versions of songs.
"I’m so glad it’s just more people I get the opportunity to educate and inspire to be part of the community," said Marshall. "I am a huge advocate for people learning American Sign Language, and I’m happy and grateful so many people were inspired to do so."

Deaf Student Teaching Lessons On Accessibility
Deaf cosmetologist student teaching lessons on accessibility at the Colorado community college.
CORTEZ, CO -- Scottsbluff Star Herald: Going back to school as a single parent with two kids is challenging for many.
For Amanda Schuster getting certified as a cosmetologist has had an additional layer of complexity because she is completely Deaf.
To get the most from her classes, she taught her instructor and others at the Southwest Colorado Community College how to accommodate her, helping to pave the way for other students that might follow her.
"I've never allowed my deafness to stop me," she said, through her interpreter Dawn Kern-Anderson.
Styling hair has always been one of Schuster's passions, but when she decided to go back to school to get certified it required some coordination with the college.
The college didn't have an interpreter on staff, so she got in touch with Kern-Anderson, her interpreter from high school to translate her classes. It's a service that the college pays for.
While Schuster can read lips, Kern-Anderson makes it much easier for her to keep up with her peers.
"It makes me feel like a normal person in the classroom," she said.
Schuster is Brenda Knapp's first Deaf student and the experience has taught her to slow down and avoid tangents in her lectures that might be hard to translate.
"You have to be very structured," Knapp said.
While Schuster appreciates help from Kern-Anderson, she has been in the hearing world her whole life and she doesn't need an interpreter all the time.
Her parents always pushed her to communicate in both English and American Sign Language after she lost her hearing at 14 months to spinal meningitis.
She attended Project Talk in California, which specializes in helping Deaf children learn to talk, and speech therapy through the San Juan Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
Growing up she also excelled in sports including tennis, cheer leading, volleyball and sharp-shooting. After high school, she attended two years college in California and majored in photography.
"I never let anything stop me, although people do try," she said.
Her long-term goal after she finishes classes in cosmetology and aesthetics is to open a salon and photography business.
But before she can take her state test to get certified, she has to complete 1,800 hours in class.
During all her time in school, she has noticed several ways the school can be more accessible and safe for Deaf students.
For example, after the school held an assembly on school safety following a college shooting in Oregon, she suggested the school install TVs and more lights as part of the alarm system. These could help make Deaf students aware of an emergency.
In addition, none of the other students are able to bring their phones into class. But Schuster can't be reached through a regular telephone during personal emergencies, so Knapp made an exception for her.
But rather than being given special treatment, Schuster would be prefer the school have video phones available so she could communicate not only with her family, but with school administrators on different campuses.
"I'm trying to improve the systems, not just for me but for everyone," she said.

Parents Of Deaf Children Encouraged To Learn Sign Language
Parents of Deaf children encouraged to learn sign language.
KENYA -- Parents of Deaf children need to learn sign language in order to communicate with their children.
This is the proposal by the undugu society of Kenya, who maintain that most Deaf children, especially those from poor backgrounds, live most of their formative years in silence because both their parents and the community at large cannot communicate with them.
The society also faulted the education system for not being accommodative enough to enable effective learning by Deaf children.

KENYA -- Parents of Deaf children need to learn sign language in order to communicate with their children.
To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Nor is self-evident in the pre-school education, access to sign language and a bilingual early intervention.
An example of this is the education in which the foundation for the further development opportunities and hard of hearing children is fixed. For the school, it is very important for children and young people that they are taught by teachers who are their sign language skills at a sufficiently high level. This can only ensure the fewest educational institutions so far unfortunately. Fact: Deaf children and young people are still not self-evident taught sign language.

Canadians who have hearing or speech problems will soon be able to send text messages to 911 services.
OTTAWA, Ontario -- Canadians who have hearing or speech problems will soon be able to send text messages to 911 services, other Canadians, however, must continue to communicate with 911 services over the phone, says Canada's telecommunications regulator.

Dispatcher Hailed Hero For Helping Deaf Woman's Mother
Dispatcher hailed hero for helping Deaf woman's mother through by VRS.
NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- A Clarksville woman is grateful to a 911 dispatcher who got help to her Deaf mother Monday night. Lisa Prichard lives in Clarksville and was home when her mother texted her that something was wrong.
Prichard was able to video call her mother Joy Gournaris, 68, at Gournaris' Antioch home. "She was confused, she didn't understand what was going on and was getting ready to pass out," Prichard said.
Prichard knew if she tried to drive to her mother's home from Clarksville it would take her an hour. She was also concerned because it appeared her mother was having a stroke and every second counted.
Prichard kept her mother on video phone and called 911 from her Clarksville home. Clarksville's 911 center transferred her to Nashville where 911 Dispatcher Lori Bentley took over the phone call.
"While, I'm communicating with sign language with my mother I was talking to the dispatcher," Prichard said. "I had to really be calm and think about what I was saying. I wanted to cry and scream, but I stayed calm for my mother."

Deaf Art Community - I'M POSSIBLE
Deaf Art Community Jogja group hip hop bisu tuli from Indonesia.
“In nature there’s no blemish but the mind, none can be called deformed but unkind” (William Shakespeare in Twelfth Night Act III Scene IV)
Never has God created imperfect people, or what-is-so-called ‘disabled’. People who call them as disabled are the most cruel people. God created people with the highest perfection and having the same right to develop their potentials to gain wealth.
Until these days, the lives of disabled people and Deaf people in Indonesia are still marginalized both structurally and culturally. There is injustice to get their rights for education, jobs, health, social, culture, law, access for information, and public facilities use. In other word, there is discrimination toward disabled people in the society. Attitudes towards disability are quite bad in Indonesia, and there is a lingering association of impairment with wrong-doing.
Most people are embarrassed about disability, and Deaf children are sometimes hidden away, especially in rural areas. Some of the Deaf people in the organisations we work with say their parents let them come to meetings in the hope that they will ‘become normal’ by forbidding them from using sign language. Faced with negative attitudes like this, Deaf children often grow up to have low self-esteem and little self-confidence.
Too many people are busy with their own importance; trying to get more money, chasing better carriers, and thinking to get higher positions, or even cheating for their own sakes as they have forgotten their surroundings that need their hands.
Through this paper, I would like to invite people to step into the proud of, emergent DEAF-WORLD and learn about its language, values, history, and concerns and to see a ‘real world’ surround us, but might have not been seen or heard by our very own eyes & ears to ‘open’ other people’s eyes to see a Deaf community that is considered as a minor-marginal-community in Indonesia as disabled people, while not many people realize that Deaf community is not disabled people but they see themselves as ‘language minority group’ who are fighting to get their right of sign language as their first mother tongue language.
Through our presentation, we will guide all of you to have a wonderful journey tour into the Deaf world in Indonesia, their Deaf culture, sign language, Deaf education and their life. We will have it through our interactive workshop, to give you an opportunity to experience a little of what the works is like for a Deaf person.
In everyday like, Deaf people try to overcome barriers to communication in an environment that is designed to meet needs of hearing people. We hope that this workshop will provide a valuable insight into the life of Deaf people.
By attending the workshop, you will gain a better understanding of how to communicate with deaf people (communication strategies), how to be Deaf like is, some basic Indonesian sign, how Deaf enjoy the music and culture art in theatre. Indonesia News video clip: Deaf Art Community Jogja.
