LONDON, UK -- ComingSoon: Director Rob Savage discusses his innovative new apocalyptic short horror film Dawn of the Deaf. Fresh off a triumphant, head-turning premiere at Fantastic Fest, the spectacularly inventive, gorgeously executed Dawn of the Deaf logline.

“When a strange sound wipes out the Hearing population, a small group of Deaf people must band together to survive” threatens to go ultra-viral via upcoming screenings at BFI London Film Festival, London Fright Fest, Sitges Film Festival, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, Uppsala International Short Film Festival, Fantasia International Film Festival and several others.

“Our aim was to create a genre film that would connect Deaf and hearing audiences in an engaging, thrilling way,” director Rob Savage tells ComingSoon.net of his apocalyptic horror short made with a cast drawn from the London Deaf community. “Rather than retread the same narratives usually seen when dealing with disability, we wanted to create a tense story in which the characters’ ‘disability’ becomes their ultimate advantage over the hearing population.”

Life and Deaf - BBC4 Documentary

BBC4 Documentary 'Life and Deaf' An immersive, experiential film in BSL about the Deaf world, with its unique humour and culture.

LONDON, UK -- An immersive, experiential film about the Deaf world, with its unique humour and culture - a world which most of us rarely encounter. The film is in British Sign Language. There is no score, no commentary, and none of the conventions of normal film-making.

The film follows some of the key characters who frequent St John's Deaf Club in north London as they face life's twists and turns and challenges.

The Costis are a big Deaf family. Tina Costi and her football-mad husband Marios are expecting a baby. For generations in Marios's family, boys are always born Deaf and girls are always born hearing. Will this new Costi baby break with tradition?

Like the Costis, Abigail also comes from a big Deaf family. She has just turned 30 and is about to make one of the biggest decisions of her life. She is considering undergoing surgery to have a cochlear implant fitted to help her deteriorating hearing, and also to better connect with her hearing friends. Abigail wants to be part of both worlds. But it's a controversial decision for her family, who proudly trace their Deaf Heritage back eight generations. How will this affect her relationship with both her family and the wider Deaf community?

At the heart of St John's Deaf Club is its football team. The rivalry between Deaf football teams is intense. Marios's brother Memnos is captain of the team. He eats, sleeps and breathes football. Passionate to the point of obsession, can he inspire his team to win the English Deaf Cup for the second time in a row?

Deaf News: Why Facebook has become so important to the sign language community in the United Kingdom.

LONDON -- Sign Language users once had to meet at local Deaf clubs to have conversations and share their views. Now, video on social media means things have changed, says Deaf journalist Charlie Swinbourne.

There was a time when sign language users had to go to a local club to shoot the breeze, share advice or have any kind of conversation. It's not as if you could just pick up the phone for a chat. Deaf clubs were a real community hub full of friends, families, board games and a barman.

In recent years, though, social media sites have started to replace the Deaf club, with Facebook leading the way. Videos on newsfeed pages can be viewed for long periods and groups are easy to set up and join.

Last year, the importance of Facebook as an outlet for the sign language community was acknowledged at a high level when the Scottish Parliament set up a group on the site to gain supporting evidence for the groundbreaking British Sign Language (Scotland) Bill, which was passed in September, and aims to promote usage of the language.

When social media first became popular, the novelty for a sign language user was that they could appear just the same as anyone else via text. Many Deaf people enjoyed being able to communicate more easily with their network of hearing colleagues, old school friends or family members for the first time...

Hearing People Should Sign For Themselves

WATCH: A psychologist is calling for signing to be available as a ‘foreign language’ option for hearing children.

LONDON, UK -- Dr Jim Cromwell said that learning British Sign Language (BSL) would benefit all students’ education and make life easier for Deaf people, bringing ‘extraordinary’ benefits for those without hearing.

In an ‘ideal world’ BSL would form part of the National Curriculum and be a compulsory element in mainstream schools, he added.

“Bilingualism gives a huge advantage in terms of thinking skills,” said Dr Cromwell, a clinical psychologist at Exeter Deaf Academy.

Having a wider population of people with BSL would make life easier those without hearing, he said. More than 900,000 people in the UK are severely or profoundly Deaf, according to the charity, Action on Hearing Loss.

Dr Cromwell also believes that those of the country’s 45,000 Deaf children who are taught in mainstream schools are not receiving the education they deserve.

“There is not the right support for them,” he said.

“They are being helped by teaching assistants with Level 2 BSL – that’s less than an O Level.

“Schools are getting away with that. There is the attitude of ‘they (Deaf children) are not doing well, but they are disabled, aren’t they?’

“Relying on education through spoken (rather than signed) lessons is like trying to learn maths A Level in Russian. Lip reading is 40 per cent guess work.”

Dr Cromwell, who has BSL at Level 4 – equivalent to degree standard – is believed to be the only clinical psychologist on the staff of a UK specialist school.

While a Deaf child ‘can do everything except hear’ many came to the Exeter school with attachment disorder, language delay, and behavioural problems because of a lack of access to BSL.

“They fall behind in primary school and are regarded as ‘problem students’,” he said. “Not all of our students are like that by any means, but we get those.”

Linguistic deprivation was one of the consequences of deafness that often began in the home as 90 per cent of children who were born Deaf had Hearing parents.

“Some (parents) will have never met a Deaf person, have no BSL and struggle to know what to do,” he said.

Their children were then learning BSL from a parent who was also learning the signing language. That might lead to learning deals that could give rise to behavioural problems, said Dr Cromwell.

Further problems might arise at schools without teachers qualified in BSL at a high level.

Part of the problem was that BSL was seen by many as a ‘pidgin’ form of English, instead of a language that was ‘heir to a rich cultural landscape’.

Widespread learning and use of BSL would help address many of those problems leading to an extraordinary increase in the well-being of Deaf children, said Dr Cromwell.
