Deaf traveler, Calvin Young of 'Seek The World' apologizes for Blackface.
'Seek the World', a co-founder Calvin Young's accountability apology for Blackface controversy on Facebook platform in the ASL and Deaf community.
"I am here to hold myself accountable for my wrongful action that I made back in 2011. I want to apologize deeply about that. I posted a picture of myself wearing 'blackface' on my personal profile and then I commented about how I would be a 'black uncle' (referring to Uncle Tom) under that picture. As of right now, I have taken down the picture permanently from my personal profile.
In this video, I shared the history about Blackface and Uncle Tom, and I explained why it is wrong and offensive to the people of color community.
It is important that we all hold ourselves accountable for any action we make. Do not sweep anything under the rug. We all always have accountability for our own actions regardless if it is in the past. I encourage us all to be open with each other and have a dialogue about topics related to Social Justice.
Having a dialogue with open mind and open heart is how we all grow together."
Calvin Young's settlement shows on Facebook.
However, an openly Gay Ricky Taylor aka Ridor9th is well-known as one of the most controversial blogger in the ASL and Deaf community, share thoughts on Calvin Young's ridiculous blackface. This vlog is about the vlog produced by Calvin founded his show, Seek the World sponsored by SorensonVRS.
Ricky Taylor's comment for Calvin Young's recent apology vlog about his action in 2011 (blackface) is not acceptable and is inexcusable in the light of his background. Shame on you, Calvin. You knew better than that in the first place.
Calvin Young's apology is pretentious in attempts to save his face.
This is it - You've reached the place that perhaps the only Deaf Gay man that knew almost ... everything about your lives. Enjoy the ride. Cheers, R-

KFC Employees Mocking Deaf Couple
Deaf couple claims they were mistreated by employees at KFC.
BYRAM, MS -- A Byram woman is looking for answers after she said her mother was made fun of for being Deaf by employees at the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Byram. She said her mother and other people with disabilities shouldn't have to choose where they can go eat or be mistreated while they are there.
Bobbie Cole said she and her husband went to the KFC off Siwell Road in Byram Wednesday night. Because she's Deaf, she said they usually go inside, but the door was locked.
Cole said she attempted to order her food at the drive-thru window.
"I said excuse me I can't understand you, I'm Deaf can you move your hand so I can read your lips," said Cole. "She still stays like this."
She said them something happened, that has never happened to her before.
"Then she walks away to the boy that was cooking, he had flour all over him," Cole said. "They both were laughing. I said, 'hey, hey.' She turned around. She said, 'what?' I said, 'are y'all making fun of us?"
"It makes me upset, hurt. You don't make fun of other people who are handicapped or deaf. I can't respect that."
Cole's daughter, Donna Curtis, took to social media to express her concerns.
"No one deserves that, no one," said Curtis. "I don't care who you are, what disability you have or anything, you do not deserve to have your feelings hurt."
We reached out to KFC. In a statement, a spokesperson told us:
"We are conducting a thorough investigation of this incident. The franchisee’s director of operations is reaching out to Ms. Curtis regarding this matter. We believe in a culture of respect for all people and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind."

Deaf Footy Fans Claims AFL Discrimination
Deaf footy fans claims Australian Football League discrimination.
MELBOURNE -- The Age: The email came from a woman in Adelaide. "You moron, are you stupid? Are you paying for the interpreter or is the taxpayer paying for it? There are bigger issues in the world then a f--king interpreter".
Ramas McRae smiles, and shrugs his broad shoulders.
The Deaf community advocate has become the target of abusive messages after his public push to get the Australian Football League to provide Auslan (Australian sign language) translation at the Grand Final.
But when you're born with a disability, you learn to grow a thick skin, the Hawthorn fan says, signing to me through an interpreter, Mark Quinn.
A Hawthorn fan, McRae asked the league to provide a translator for the entertainment and ceremonies during the Grand Final this year, including the anthem. But the AFL refused, saying the closed caption system on TV was appropriate.
So McRae has lodged a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, claiming the AFL have discriminated against him on the basis of his disability, and also launched a change.org petition. He is supported by a range of groups, including Deaf Australia and Deaf Victoria.
With the AFL promoting awareness of the women's league, and LGBTI recognition through its Pride game, McRae wants it to extend this inclusion to Deaf people (at the cost of a few hundred dollars).
"The Deaf community, and Deaf football fans, have the right to be a visible part of this huge sporting event," McRae says. "As citizens, we also have the right to see the national anthem in our preferred language."
Closed captions often have a 30-second to one-minute time lag on them, and require a screen, which means people who are at the game will not be able to see them, he says. Auslan is a language with its own syntax and grammar, which is quite different to English.
Internationally, particularly in the United States, sign language is commonly used at sporting events, including at the grand finals of the National Football League and National Basketball Association.
"For Deaf Americans it's very normal. People are often quite surprised internationally that Australia lags so far behind."
Some sporting codes are keen on the idea. Melbourne Racing Club's head of racing, Jake Norton, contacted McRae after he heard about his request. The club would like to introduce interpreters at major race meets, he said.
The AFL believes an on-ground interpreter would not be seen by the crowd, because of the distance from the seating to the arena, a spokesman said in a statement.
And because the broadcast coverage moves around the crowd and arena – and rarely focuses on the announcer – an interpreter would not often be seen, he said.
Having an interpreter shown in a separate box in one corner of the television screen would still be difficult to see clearly, and would impact on the wider broadcast, he said.
The words of the anthem could be displayed on LED signage during the pre-game period, and the AFL is discussing this possibility, he said.

Deaf Woman Sues NYPD For Wrongly Arrested
Deaf News: Deaf woman denied interpreter by cops who arrested her after car accident sues city and NYPD.
NEW YORK CITY -- A Deaf woman was mocked and wrongly arrested by New York City Police Department cops after a minor car accident - all because they refused to get an interpreter to hear her side of the story, a new Manhattan federal lawsuit alleges.
Tanya Ingram's alleged ordeal began around 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 26, 2013, when she and another car collided at the intersection of Second Ave. and E. 120th Street.
The other driver got out of her car and rushed toward Ingram, apparently angry and shouting, the suit claims.
Ingram felt threatened by the other driver’s behavior so she "picked up a small metal pipe that she had in her car and exited the car, gesturing to (the other driver) to back away with her free hand. At no time did Ms. Ingram swing the pipe, nor did she ever attempt to strike (the other driver)," the suit states.
The cops who arrived on the scene some 45 minutes later spent considerable time speaking with the other driver in the accident, the suit says.
They refused to provide Ingram with the means to communicate, however - though she repeatedly pointed to her ear and shook her head to show her hearing impairment, she says.
One of the responding officers asked Ingram for her keys and opened the trunk. He then made several gestures to indicate a pipe, and she retrieved it from the car.
As the officers mulled about the scene of the accident, an EMT dispatched to the intersection approached Ingram. She explained that she was Deaf through gestures, and he gave her a piece of paper and pen so that she could speak with him. The officer who had opened her trunk was 10 feet away.
"You did not understand me. That's not right. I know she's lying to you. How can I tell you my story? I want my rights. Call interpreter," the note stated.
Ingram, 51, tried to show him the note, and while he glanced at it, the cops "expressed visible annoyance" and ignored her.
She then saw several officers speaking with each other and they "appeared to be mocking her use of gestures."
When the cops moved to arrest her, Ingram had no idea what was happening and became "extremely frightened and utterly bewildered as to the reason for her arrest began crying and repeatedly tried to audibly shout, 'Why?,'" her lawyers maintain.
Ingram was ultimately detained for 24 hours and never received an interpreter as required by law, she alleges.
She had been charged with four misdemeanors menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, harassment, and resisting arrest but all charges were dropped in July 2013, the suit contends.
Ingram is seeking unspecified damages.
Asked about the lawsuit, a city Law Department spokesman said that: "The complaint will be reviewed."
Ingram’s lawsuit is one of several recent false arrest claims in which Deaf individuals allege they were denied an interpreter.
Also Thursday, Susan Herman, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Collaborative Policing, said the department is hosting an outreach event for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing this March at the former police academy building on E. 20th Street.
At the event, they hope to distribute visor plaques for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing so they can better communicate with police officers, she said.
These plaques would say that the driver is Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and the driver's preferred method of communication, as well as various symbols and words, to explain things such as why an officer has stopped the driver.
Deaf and hard-of-hearing drivers will also be able to indicate whether they're having a medical emergency, Herman says.
The NYPD will soon launch a pilot program in three precincts to increase access to in-person and tablet-based American Sign Language translation. The department also worked with the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community to create a roll call training video, she told The News. SOURCE

Deaf customer who is upset with McDonald's over treatment in Nebraska.
COLUMBUS, NEB -- A clash between a customer and the company: the video captured at a Columbus, Nebraska drive-through went viral recently.
Just two hours into the New Year, Jonathan Ramos arrived at the McDonald's drive-through window. His frustration in trying to place an order is evident in the use of his car horn, something, he himself, doesn't hear. It struck a nerve with one of the employees.

Video captured an employee’s response: "You can leave or I'm going to call police. Do you get that one?"
Ramos has been in Columbus for less than a year and has ordered at the McDonald’s before. He’s Deaf. Chicken pox took his hearing when he was a little boy. He doesn't read lips.
After exchanging texts and emails, WOWT 6 News met with Ramos outside the restaurant. We used a legal pad to write down any follow-up questions and answers during the interview.
He said he wanted to order a #9 - 3 or 5 piece Chicken Selects. He explained he usually types the information on his phone and then shows the order to the employee.
Because of his disability, he felt the workers were ignoring him by leaving the window.
After this exchange, Ramos said the employees need a serious lesson in dealing with hearing- impaired customers.
The owners of this McDonald's told WOWT it was a matter of misunderstanding and miscommunication. They said that earlier in the video when workers left the window on New Year's Day, they weren't discriminating against Jonathan, but getting a pen and paper to get the order.
From Jonathan Ramos' cellphone video, workers wrote this note: "You need to leave or we will call the police."
Employees did call police, saying that he refused to move forward in the drive through.
The owners tell WOWT 6 News that his minute-long video is only part of the story; that their own driver-though security cameras paint a different picture of Ramos disrupting a busy drive-through by honking his horn for nine minutes before turning his own video recorder on. Ramos disputes that account.
When asked if he thought it was all a misunderstanding, Ramos shrugged his shoulders. Ramos went on to explain that there’s no excuse for how he was treated. He plans to sue for discrimination.
I, Jonathan, am he declared sue to McDonald's Columbus, Nebraska.
For the restaurant's part, owners admit tempers flared but that neither side communicated well. They said Deaf customers usually bypass the speaker and go straight to the window to hand them a piece of paper with the order.
After the incident, the McDonald’s now keeps a pad and pen near the drive-through window in order to better communicate with the Deaf community.
Ramos hopes he's opened some eyes for every worker when it comes to dealing with those with a disability. He wishes more drive-through restaurants would add cameras near the ordering speaker so the Deaf community could easier communicate with the employees.
The McDonald's owners in Columbus say Jonathan Ramos is welcome at the restaurant any time.

Drive-Thru McDonalds Discrimination Deaf Driver
Declared lawsuit for discrimination of Deaf driver going through a drive thru at a McDonald's in Nebraska.
COLUMBUS, NE -- Here is the video with hardcoded subtitles with what is being heard for the Deaf people to understand what is being said. Hearing people are welcome to verify or correct what is being shown.
This is a video captured by Jonathan Ramos as he made a drive through at a McDonalds located in Columbus, Nebraska during January 2nd. He is Deaf and wanted to make an order.
Normally Deaf people would drive past the speakers straight to the window then hand over a written note or display the order off the screen of a smartphone. The cashier would put in the order for the next window to deliver the order.
Jonathan says that prior to the recording, he displayed his order on his phone to the window then begun the recording after this person has not returned to the window after a while. He has stated that there were problems between him and that particular McDonald since last June.
After the end of the video, a police officer appeared and issued a ticket to Jonathan and warned him that he is not to be allowed to return to McDonald or be cited for trespassing.
In a way, it is a discrimination because Jonathan is being singled out as someone who is Deaf. It does appear in this video that the employees were being extremely rude to a Deaf person by yelling at him while being aware that the driver is deaf.
I, Jonathan, am he declared sue to McDonald's Columbus, Nebraska.
If it is proven that Jonathan has been disruptive (as not shown in the video) before the recording begun, then he is at fault and is treated as someone who is being disruptive to a private property and it was within the location's rights to refuse service and have the police to escort this person away.

Taco Bell Complains About Deaf Customers
Taco Bell employee inadvertently leaves his drive thru microphone on and is captured complaining about Deaf customers.
According to the videographer from Springfield, Illinois - They left the microphone on and not only was he be (sic) insensitive to Deaf people he also was using foul language.
The Taco Bell staff did nothing when confronted and of coarse (sic) they screwed up our order. Taco Bell is obviously discriminating and failing to serve for Deaf customers as well. Note: no captioning, only audio.
Taco Bell is an American chain of fast-food restaurants, they serve a variety of Tex-Mex foods including tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, other specialty items, and a variety of "value menu" items. However, Taco Bell is failing to serve for Deaf customers which cannot to communaute through the microphone by drive-thru.

Deaf Father Shot By Racist Neighbor
A Father was called 'Deaf and Dumb' before being shot by other father in the neighborhood of Florida.
JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- The victim in a neighborhood shooting, a Deaf man, said the shooter mocked his disability before firing the gun. The victim is recovering after his neighbor shot him Sunday evening, police said.
The man's wife said she was watching from her window when everything unfolded. She said her husband got shot and fell on the ground. Surveillance video recorded screams in the Hunter's Way Apartments Sunday evening.
"I mean, instantly everybody was in panic mode," said Richard Royal. Royal was one of of the neighbors who rushed in to help 50-year old Allen Zogleman after a bullet grazed his head. His cameras captured the moments leading up to the shooting. "I don't think no one expected he was going to pull a gun out," said Royal.
It started with some sort of incident between Zogelman's and the suspect's children arguing. When Zogleman tried to explain he's Deaf, he was shot. Neighbors say the bloody sight unfolded in front of dozens of children. One of those kids was Zogleman's 4-year-old daughter.
Zogleman and his wife are both Deaf.
Action News' Brittany Jones went to talk to them and exchanged notes. His wife said the suspect's son struck her daughter in the head with a pole, and Zogleman yelled to her through their apartment window and went downstairs to talk to the boy's dad. She said that then, the man got into her husband's face, yelling. She said the suspect said her husband was "deaf and dumb," then shot him and left.
The neighbor's surveillance video shows a white car speeding off right after the shooting happened, but no one has seen the suspect since.
Actions News obtained photos of Zogleman's injuries. "Somebody like that shouldn't be loose on the streets. To pull a gun that fast and shoot somebody an unarmed man; an unarmed Deaf man," said Royal... Read The Full Story.

Winnipeg Most Racist City In Canada: Maclean's
Welcome to Winnipeg, where Canada's racism problem is at its worst.
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Maclean's magazine has labelled Winnipeg the most racist city in Canada.
How the death of Tina Fontaine has finally forced it to face its festering race problem, by associate editor Nancy Macdonald published the magazine, "Welcome to Winnipeg, Canada: Where Canada's racism problem is at its worst" into public and the Canadians and Winnipeggers find out quite shocked that Winnipeg is Canada's most racist city.
The Aboriginal community of Deaf and Hard of Hearing does feel the same manner as aboriginal people as well. There appears "Deaf" on the article which Tina Fountine's former boyfriend, who is Deaf, quote: "Her boyfriend was Deaf; the pair communicated by texting." Maclean's.
Winnipeg's racism problem is at its worst - Nancy Macdonald:
“Oh Goddd how long are aboriginal people going to use what happened as a crutch to suck more money out of Canadians?” Winnipeg teacher Brad Badiuk wrote on Facebook last month. “They have contributed NOTHING to the development of Canada. Just standing with their hand out. Get to work, tear the treaties and shut the FK up already. Why am I on the hook for their cultural support?”
Another day in Winnipeg, another hateful screed against the city’s growing indigenous population. This one from a teacher (now on paid administrative leave) at Kelvin High School, long considered among the city’s progressive schools - alma mater to just about every Winipegger of note, from Marshall McLuhan to Izzy Asper, Fred Penner and Neil Young.
Badiuk’s comments came to light the day Rinelle Harper - the shy 16-year-old indigenous girl left for dead in the city’s Assiniboine River after a brutal sexual assault - spoke publicly for the first time after her recovery. She called for an inquiry to help explain why so many indigenous girls and women are being murdered in Winnipeg, and elsewhere in Canada.
Badiuk’s comments came while the city was still reeling from the murder of Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old child from the Sagkeeng First Nation who was wrapped in plastic and tossed into the Red River after being sexually exploited in the city’s core.
They came after Nunavummiuq musician Tanya Tagaq, last year’s Polaris Music Prize winner, who complained that while out to lunch in downtown Winnipeg where she was performing with the city’s ballet this fall, “a man started following me calling me a ‘sexy little Indian’ and asking to fuck.”
They came the very week an inquest issued its findings in the death of Brian Sinclair, an indigenous 45-year-old who died from an entirely treatable infection after being ignored for 34 hours in a city ER.
They came in the wake of a civic election dominated by race relations after a racist rant by a frontrunner’s wife went viral: “I’m really tired of getting harassed by the drunken native guys” downtown, Gord Steeves’s wife, Lori, wrote on Facebook. “We all donate enough money to keep their sorry asses on welfare, so shut the fuck up and don’t ask me for another handout!” The former city councillor and long-serving, centrist politician didn’t bother apologizing. He lost, but not because of this.
For decades, the friendly Prairie city has been known for its smiling, lefty premiers, pacifist, Mennonite writers and a love affair with the Jets. Licence plates here bear the tag “Friendly Manitoba.” But events of last fall served to expose a darker reality. The Manitoba capital is deeply divided along ethnic lines. It manifestly does not provide equal opportunity for Aboriginals. And it is quickly becoming known for the subhuman treatment of its First Nations citizens, who suffer daily indignities and appalling violence. Winnipeg is arguably becoming Canada’s most racist city...

Deaf Customers Sue Starbucks Over Mocking
Deaf News: Starbucks employees allegedly laughed at speech of hearing impaired customers in New York City.
NEW YORK CITY -- Twelve Deaf Starbucks customers in New York City have filed a lawsuit against the Seattle-based coffee company, claiming discrimination. Starbucks employees allegedly mocked the customers multiple times over the course of several years, and once called the police on a monthly meeting of Deaf people.
"Cruel Employees" at two different Manhattan Starbucks mocked Deaf customers and refused to serve them, a stunning new lawsuit says.
"They were ridiculed, laughed at and told they had to leave Starbucks," said lawyer Eric Baum, who's suing on behalf of a dozen Deaf customers.
Jamie Riley, a spokeswoman for the mega-popular coffee chain, said they were aware of the allegations and were investigating them. "Discrimination of any kind is unacceptable at Starbucks," she said.
The suit says one incident took place at a Starbucks at 424 Park Ave. South in August 2012, when customer Alan Roth said a barista laughed when he placed his order, telling him he "sounded funny."
She "asked him to continually repeat himself as she laughed harder each time," and she was soon laughing "hysterically," the suit says.
When Roth demanded to speak to a manager, the employee started screaming obscenities at him and had to be restrained by other Starbucks staff, the suit says. Another employee told Roth to leave and never come back, the suit says.
Roth said he had "never before been so blatantly and maliciously been discriminated against."
The suit says Deaf customers also were forced to leave and had the cops called on them another time at the 13-25 Astor Place location, which had been chosen as the monthly gathering spot for an informal "Deaf Chat Coffee" social group...

Aussie Teen Dodges Jail For Bashing Deaf Man
Western Australia teen dodges jail for bashing Deaf Asian man.
PERTH, Australia -- A teenager has dodged a jail term after pleading guilty to bashing a Deaf man at a Perth train station, but he will face imprisonment if he offends again in the next year, a judge has warned.
Joshua William Bignell, 18, bashed Seow Oh, 28, fracturing his eye socket, in the eastern Perth suburb of Carlisle in June last year.
Bignell bashed and kicked Mr Oh from behind as he was walking to his car parked at the station. Bignell was originally charged with assault occasioning bodily harm but the charge was later upgraded to grievous bodily harm.
On Monday, in the District Court of Western Australia Judge Phillip Eaton handed Bignell a pre-sentence order, subject to three reviews over the next 12 months. Judge Eaton decided not to imprison Bignell immediately because he was young, had a troubled childhood and mental health problems and was "now in a stable situation".
If Bignell committed an offence in the next 12 months, it was likely he'd be sentenced to an immediate term of imprisonment, Judge Eaton warned. "You can just about bank on that," he said.
"If you're going well, I'll allow the order to continue. "If things are falling apart, then I won't hesitate to bring it to an end. "If you fail, Mr Bignell, then the consequences will be grim."
Judge Eaton said the maximum penalty for the offence was 10 years' imprisonment, meaning Bignell was "in the big league" after "fairly relentless offending" in recent years... Read The Full Story.

Sign language that African Americans use is different from that of Whites.
WASHINGTON, DC -- Carolyn McCaskill remembers exactly when she discovered that she couldn’t understand white people. It was 1968, she was 15 years old, and she and nine other Deaf black students had just enrolled in an integrated school for the Deaf in Talledega, Ala.
When the teacher got up to address the class, Angela McCaskill was lost. “I was dumbfounded,” McCaskill recalls through an interpreter. “I was like, ‘What in the world is going on?’ ”
The teacher’s quicksilver hand movements looked little like the sign language McCaskill had grown up using at home with her two Deaf siblings and had practiced at the Alabama School for the Negro Deaf and Blind, just a few miles away. It wasn’t a simple matter of people at the new school using unfamiliar vocabularly; they made hand movements for everyday words that looked foreign to McCaskill and her fellow black students.
So, McCaskill says, “I put my signs aside.” She learned entirely new signs for such common nouns as “shoe” and “school.” She began to communicate words such as “why” and “don’t know” with one hand instead of two as she and her black friends had always done. She copied the white students who lowered their hands to make the signs for “what for” and “know” closer to their chins than to their foreheads. And she imitated the way white students mouthed words at the same time as they made manual signs for them... Read The Full Story on Washington Post.

Deaf Black Teens Beaten By Cops During Stop
Deaf black students say they were manhandled by police.
BELLEVILLE, New Jersey -- The East Coast's Stop and Frisk law allowed New Jersey cops to stop a group of deaf black teenagers and harass them. A group of deaf men, on summer vacation from a Trenton trade school for the hearing-impaired, said they were stopped and manhandled by cops in New Jersey.
20 year old Isiah Isaac used “sign language” to tell the story to PIX 11 through his mother and brother. “It was six cars that surrounded them,” Isaac’s mother, Frances, said—as she followed his sign language in the family living room. “He said all the cop cars came over and blocked them in.”
17 year old Domonique Isaac - Isiah’s brother - said he was the only one of six, young men in the car who could hear. The driver, he said, was Deaf - and got out of the car to fetch his l icense from a bag in the trunk. Isaac said, “The passenger (in the front) tried to get out and explain to the officer that he’s Deaf.
The driver ended up on the other side of the car and they slammed him in the passenger’s seat. When he slammed him in, that’s when I tried telling him, ‘He’s Deaf, he’s DEAF.’” ... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Victim of Bullying at Three Different Schools
Experience with "bullying" at three different mainstream schools.
When he was young student and went three different mainstreaming schools. The mainstreaming students were bullying at him and cause his life become trouble, of course, his grade got bad too.
Mother decided and sent him to Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at Staunton, VA. Through 6 years he'd suffered from bullying by the VSDB staff.
Until He decided to transfer to Model Secondary School for the Deaf from VSDB for a good reason that need to keep away from them. He recommend to the parent of a Deaf child... Deaf schools is a better environment socialzing with the students than mainstreaming school.
Familiar Stories of the Mainstream School:
"Alone In A Hearing World" shows true to life scenarios of a young Deaf boy growing up in a hearing world. With family members who can't communicate and continuous misunderstandings by his teachers and coaches, he is forced to live in a world of isolation. However, when he pleas for his Mothers understanding and falls short, he ends up in the only place he seems to find acceptance.
"Alone In The Mainstream" (best seller book for the teachers) - A Deaf women remembers public schools - Gina A. Oliva in which a book is a part of education for hearing parents to understanding with Deaf children in the mainstream schools.
