Deaf Girl Sexually Assaulted On School Bus

Oregon mother claims her 10-year old, Deaf daughter sexually assaulted on school bus from Oregon School for the Deaf.

MEDFORD, Oregon -- “I just think it needs some light spread on this situation. A lot of these kids can’t verbalize what’s going on,” said Rachelle, the victim’s mother. A Medford mother says she’s fighting to keep her 10-year-old daughter safe after she came home from school last week traumatized.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

“Just kind of disbelief that this is the safest that my kid can be,” she said.

Rachelle says her daughter, who we’ll call Jane (which is not her real name) is Deaf. Twice a week, Jane and other special needs students go to the Oregon School for the Deaf in Salem. It was on that trip last Friday that Rachelle says her daughter was sexually assaulted.

“She told me that one of the high school boys on the bus pulled his pants and underwear down and put her on his lap. And she said that he had tried to grab her genital area,” Rachelle said.

Oregon State Police are now investigating.

The students on the bus are in the Medford School District, which declined to comment about the incident, but said it’s aware of the investigation.

“We entrust these people with our kids, you know, and these aren’t just any kids… these are kids with special needs and they cannot communicate,” Rachelle said.

The district says there is an adult monitor on the bus who supervises the children, but that monitor does not know how to communicate using sign language.

That’s a major problem for Rachelle.

“She’s non-verbal so when she’s on that bus the whole time there is no way for her to communicate with anyone other than the other kids,” she said.

Cincinnati, Ohio-based company, ‘First Student,’ is contracted by the Medford School District to operate the bus.

The company hasn’t returned multiple calls seeking comment.

Its website, however, says “students with special physical and emotional needs deserve the highest quality care, and we deliver exactly that through our rigorous training programs.”

Rachelle knows she can’t rewind the clock and protect her daughter, but going forward wants to ensure no one else has to go through this.

“I just want the kids to be safe, you know. I want parents to put their kids on the bus feeling like they’re going to be okay,” she said.

The criminal case is currently being investigated by Oregon State Police.

Although the bus is run by ‘First Student,’ the Medford School District tells us they are closely involved in making decisions with the company to ensure student safety. The district has since requested the company hire a monitor who speaks sign language, and that someone is placed at the back of the bus.

Albania TV Show Interview With Deaf Model

Rudina: Maria Taragjini represented Albania in Miss & Mister Deaf 2019.

TIRANA, Albania -- A beautiful and gorgeous 21-year-old Maria Taragjini is a Deaf woman with different abilities who does not speak or listen. But that has not stopped her from pursuing her dream. Maria represented Albania in the Miss and Mister Deaf 2019 competition that took place in Italy, ranking 5th.

Maria was invited today on the show "Rudina" on TV Klan to tell us more about this beautiful experience. Accompanied by her friend Loretta, who helps us communicate in sign language, Maria is currently a sophomore at the University of the Arts in the Department of Sculpture and Painting.

She has been living away from her family since coming to Tirana at the age of five to study at the school for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. While her family still lives in Kodovjat village of Gramsh.

Representing Albania was a dream come true and ranking in fifth place was a great achievement, even though it says competition was strong.

“I competed with 5 outfits; in a red dress, in a black dress, in something fashionable, in bathing suits and in a red dress. The race was strong, lots of beautiful girls, lots of competition. I did not find it difficult, I felt safe after being helped by people in the field. Fulfilled the dream I had when I was little, I learned how to walk in the backyard, to be beautiful. Fulfilling the dream is something very big."

Marias says she likes to change her appearance often. “I like myself more blonde than brunettes. I love the change of appearance. My hair was blue. I really want to explore with myself."

Prejudice is another aspect Marian has often associated with throughout her life. In this beauty contest, messages were given that these young people would not be seen with a different eye. And this is what Mary seeks to say. Maria's message is, "Don't prejudge, but help, we're like you."

SYDNEY -- Abbi Keating, from New South Wales, Australia, lost her hearing at two years old - something that baffled doctors as she also stopped talking.

Her mum, Amy, 31, was devastated but quickly ensured her daughter was fitted with hearing aids and later underwent an operation to have a cochlear implant fitted - an electronic device that replaces the function of the ear.

Abbi longed for a doll just like her and spent hours drawing hearing devices onto her dolls with pen.

Animated Short Film 'Deaf in a Hearing World'

The Inspiring Deaf Awareness Animated Short Film 'Deaf in a Hearing World' by StoryBooth.

StoryBooth shares inspirational real stories animated short film is about a young teenage Deaf girl, Jocelyn, 15, wearing cochlear implant, survivor by bullying at mainstreaming school in a hearing world. English subtitles version.

It's hard enough to go from middle school to high school, even harder when you are going to a brand new school, but imagine doing all of that and being deaf - the only deaf student in the school. That's what Jocelyn was going through when she entered 9th grade - alone in a big new school, without a friend, and feeling so out of place being a Deaf person in a hearing world.

Her cochlear implants American Sign Language helped her to hear, just a bit, but they also looked strange to the other kids. She didn't know anyone, had no friends there, and nobody seemed to care about her, or noticed that she was all alone. In fact, because she was Deaf, the other kids ignored her, or looked at her strangely and whispered to each other. This all made her feel even more alone, more different. She felt so isolated. Her deafness seemed to be holding her back and and stopped students from getting close to her in a way she should be just like any other kid.

Then, one day in poetry class, a boy sitting in front of her passed her a note. She had never gotten a note before. He asked her is she wanted a friend. She could hardly believe it, hardly trust it - but there he was, asking, sincere.

She said yes and, eventually, they became best friends! He spoke to her as if she wasn't Deaf, and that made her so happy. He made her feel like she belonged. He treated her just like any other hearing person. And they did what any other friends would do, went to the Mall, to Starbucks, and the library to study and draw. He began to experience a day though a deaf person's eyes.

Now they are always hanging out together. And he taught Jocelyn the true meaning of friendship, which was the greatest gift she had ever received. It changed her, brought her back to life, and for that, Jocelyn will always be thankful and grateful.

Deaf Girl's Costume For School Photo Goes Viral

3-year-old Deaf toddler becomes internet's hero with this epic class picture day outfit.

ROCKLIN, California -- When 3-year-old Kaylieann Steinbach picks out her school outfits every morning there are no mismatched socks, bright colored blouses or pajama-like pants.

Instead, the little girl sticks with her favorite theme: superheroes.

That’s why the preschooler’s parents weren’t surprised by their daughter’s outfit choice on picture day at her school, Merryhill Preschool in Rocklin, California.

For two straight weeks, the little girl had been running around in her bright blue velvet Superman dress and matching red cape. In fact, she wore it so much, her parents even had to sneak into her room to wash it while she was in the bath.

But they still got a good chuckle when they opened up their mail a few weeks later and saw her adorable ensemble -- superman figurine included.

Kaylieann’s dad, Alex Steinbach, posted the hilarious school picture to Reddit, and it received nearly 5,000 upvotes.

“As proud as any parents can be we do our best to support her with everything, including outfit choices,” Steinbach told CBS News. “We always let her dress herself and her choices show her personality well.”

Every day, Kaylieann makes sure everyone in her class gets a friendly “hello.”

They often try to guess which outfit she’s going to go with that day.

Her parents say it’s safe to assume it will be some version of a superhero costume.

“Since we’ve always let her choose her outfit we will continue to let her,” Steinbach said. “She loves expressing herself with her choices.”

Steinbach can’t wait to hang the photo, which perfectly sums up Kaylieann’s spunky personality, on the wall.

“She’s already smarter than all of us parents combined! She surprises us everyday and leaves us speechless and with tummy aches from laughing,” Steinbach said.

The Deaf Body in Public Space - NY Times

Deaf News: The Deaf Body in Public Space from New York Times.

NEW YORK CITY -- “It’s rude to point,” my friend told me from across the elementary-school cafeteria table. I grasped her words as I read them off her lips. She stared at my index finger, which I held raised in midair, gesturing toward a mutual classmate. “My mom said so.”

I was 6 or 7 years old, but I remember stopping with a jolt. Something inside me froze, too, went suddenly cold.

“I’m signing,” I said out loud. “That’s not rude.”

As the only Deaf student in my elementary school, I had already stumbled across the challenges of straddling two languages and two modes of communication. My family was hearing, but they still empowered me by using both English and sign language at home.

A sign language interpreter accompanied me throughout the day at school, and my teachers created a welcoming environment for me to learn, but finding a place to belong with kids my own age often felt more difficult. I tried to speak to them, and occasionally they reciprocated the effort by learning some basic signs. But usually I felt separate.

I went home that day and asked my mother about what my friend had said. “Don’t worry,” my mother said, “she doesn’t know the social rules are different with signing. You aren’t being rude.” With that, matter-of-fact as always, she brought the conversation to an end. But I still felt a lingering self-consciousness, entirely novel and difficult to shake.

This was perhaps the first time I realized that other people could see me as obtrusive, as taking up too much space, when I was simply communicating just as I was.

When I reflect on this memory two decades later, I recognize how my childhood friend, whom at the time I had found to be so accusatory, had really gaped at me with a sort of wonder. My signing challenged the rules of social conduct she’d absorbed from adults, and to her I must have seemed ignorant or radically rebellious, or perhaps both. But pointing was a truly fundamental act for me; it was how I expressed what my grown-up scholarly self would call relationality - the idea of being in the world in relation to others. Through sign language, a properly poised finger allowed me to say you and me and he and she and they. If I did not point, how could I make a human connection? ... Read More at New York Times.

Deaf Girl Teaches Deaf Puppy Sign Language

Deaf girl teaches puppy sign language in heartwarming video encouraging people to embrace being different.

LOS ANGELES, California -- Meet Julia and her four-legged best friend Walter.

Julia was born Deaf, and so was Walter - but the two don't mind being different. In fact, they embrace it, according to the Pasadena Humane Society and SCPCA.

A heartwarming video showcasing the special bond between Julia and her puppy was recently posted to the humane society's Facebook page. The video, produced with the help of 1620 Media, has received more than 246,000 views and hundreds of positive comments since it was shared last week.

In the video, Julia can be seen teaching Walter sign language, including sign commands for "sit," water" and "food."

"I love Walter," she says in sign language. "Walter is my best friend."

Walter first came to the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA last December, according to Jamie Holeman, community relations associate for the organization.

A Good Samaritan had found Walter and his littermates abandoned and brought them in, Holeman told ABC News today. Walter was only 6 weeks old when he was found, she said.

Once the resilient pup was old enough to be put up for adoption, the shelter posted a photo of Walter to its Facebook page, Holeman said. Julia and her mother saw Walter's photo on the page and immediately fell in love.

The love at first sight only grew stronger when Julia and her mother went to meet Walter in person.

"When I first held Julia, since she couldn’t really hear my voice she would smell my neck and when I first held Walter, he did almost the same exact thing," Julia's mother says in the video recently shared by the humane society.

"I remember just looking at him, and I just knew that he was meant to be ours," she adds. "They’re the same."

Holeman said she hoped that the video would remind people that "there's always someone out there for everyone."

Julia's family asked not to be identified by their last name.

Taylor Swift Meets Young Girl Who's Going Deaf

WATCH: Australian girl Jorja Hope's wildest dreams came true on Saturday night when she met her idol Taylor Swift.

SYDNEY - The 12-year-old, from Maitland in the Hunter region, lived out a fairy tale on the weekend after the local community came together to help her meet the pop music superstar.

It all started when Jorja found out she has a condition that causes progressive, inner-ear hearing loss and would one day go Deaf.

The first thing she said when she got the prognosis was: "I won't be able to hear Taylor Swift sing".

Her twin sister Chloe was upset by the news and wanted to do something special for her sister, so she launched the social media campaign #HelpJorjaMeetTaylorSwiftSydney.

It went viral and eventually radio station, Nova 96.9, stepped in to get Jorja a "meet and greet" with the pop star.

The moment came to fruition at Swift's 1989 concert at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night - and it was everything Jorja had hoped for.

"She was very, very amazing and very pretty," Jorja said.

"I didn't expect her to be as tall as she was."

The girls took the pop star a gift - Mortels Ugg Boots from Thornton.

"She was very excited," Jojra said.

After the photo opportunity the twins enjoyed prime seats as Swift performed in front of the 76,000 strong crowd.

"It was very, very fun, we danced all night," she said. Sydney Morning Herald‎

Deaf Girl Uses ASL To Communicate With Pet Dog

Deaf Albuquerque girl uses American Sign Language to communicate with pet dog.

ALBUQUERQUE -- A Deaf New Mexico girl is using sign language to communicate with her pet dog. “She does everything with him,” said Neeva’s mom Chelsea Goff. While Neeva, 4, eats, her dog Baxter cleans up her crumbs. When it’s time to go outside and play, he is by her side.

“He is just always with her. If she’s asleep in bed, we can guarantee that he is in her room with her,” said Goff. Neeva and Baxter aren’t your average pair.

“We found out right away after she was born that she didn’t have hearing,” said Goff. Neeva goes to the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe. She communicates using sign language. “So really that is our primary language with her, therefore it’s her primary language with our animals,” said Goff.

Goff went to Animal Humane of New Mexico in August to find a dog that could fit in with her family, particularly one that had enough patience to care for Neeva.

“They had some animals that they thought would fit with our family and sure enough Baxter was one of them,” she said. “It was kind of that love at first sight kind of thing, so we brought him home and things have been great.”

Neeva has taught Baxter how to sit, stay and even go using sign language. Goff said Baxter listens most of the time especially if there is a treat involved.

“To watch them interact and really have active communication is really spectacular to watch,” said Goff. She also said the constant communication between the two has helped Neeva with her signing.

“In the Deaf community you get a sign name and it is usually assigned to you by another Deaf community member, so Neeva gave Baxter his sign name,” she said. Goff said the pair’s relationship is a silent one, yet powerful. Neeva’s family got Baxter for free from Animal Humane after another family who fell in love with him at the shelter, but couldn’t have him paid for his adoption fee.

Alistair Campbell, from New Zealand, got the artwork done to show six-year-old daughter Charlotte that he supports her as she struggles with a condition that means she has profound hearing loss.

Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, Mr Campbell said he got the tattoo 'out of love' for his daughter, and to show her he could take a bit of pain on her behalf.

He told the paper that he has no other tattoos, and will now let his hair grow back to cover this one... Read The Full Story.
