Jehovah’s Witnesses international “Deaf ministry” as directed by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, Inc., is no small feat because there are over 200 distinct sign languages in the world. It’s their “Deaf ministry” in the United States and the United Kingdom that this article focuses on. Both countries share the English language, but each country’s sign language is markedly different although the recruiting method is basically the same.

Just as Watch Tower translators around the world look to the English version of book, article, or scripture in their work, the sign language that most of the Society’s sign language teams around the world look to for guidance is American Sign Language (ASL).

Investigation has revealed that this religious organization has not spared any expense to get their message out to the Deaf, although, overall, hearing members directly bear most of the costs. The Watch Tower Corporation provides low cost DVDs filmed at their headquarters that feature expert volunteer sign language translators signing the Bible and Watch Tower literature. But expensive electronic systems are installed in places where Witnesses congregate to help the Deaf understand the beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses with equipment costs paid for by local Witnesses. Moreover, scouring the cities and countryside looking for Deaf persons and conducting personal Bible studies is done by Witness translators at their own expense.

The charitable attitude of the Witnesses to aid the Deaf to learn the fundamentals about God is commendable at a time when it is estimated “…that only 1 percent of American Deaf children will attend church as adults and less than 7 percent will ever have the gospel presented to them in a way they can understand.” Christianity Today, January 5, 2011, Do You Hear What I Hear? by Jeremy Weber.

But what are the ramifications of accepting the sign language religious message delivered by Jehovah’s Witnesses? That is the other part of the “mixed bag” that will be discussed later.

In Accra, Ghana, on Dec. 7, 2009, the Witnesses provided interpreters for 470 Deaf attendees at a convention where nearly 50,000 people came from Ghana, Europe and other African countries. On September 30, 2000, Watchtower’s information site announced the completion of a building in Brooklyn, NY, “the first of its kind in the United States, a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses built from the ground up with the needs of the Deaf community in mind.” All services were provided in American Sign Language. Sermons were given by ministers fluent in American Sign Language, many of whom were Deaf themselves. Under construction was another sign language Kingdom Hall in Washington, D.C. that would join 68 other American Sign Language congregations and Bible study groups in the United States. On July 9, 2010, the newspaper, The Press-Enterprise, in Norco, California, reported that hundreds of Deaf Jehovah’s Witnesses were in the area to attend a convention where about 1,500 people were expected. The article stated that there were 145 American Sign Language congregations in the United States. In addition, the press article pointed out that due to the “growing turnout in Norco,” the Witnesses would have a similar conference in the Bay Area. On August 2, 2010, a press release from Jehovah’s Witnesses Official Media Web Site announced that in Russia on July 16th, “more than 3,000 Deaf people from all corners of the country (there are 137 congregations in Russia that consist solely of Deaf persons and interpreters) attended a special meeting and learned that they will get their own Bible in Russian Sign Language.” Further, “All in attendance received, free of charge, three new DVDs containing video recordings of those two Gospels [Matthew and John] Jehovah’s Witnesses Official Media Website, August 2, 2010, Deaf in Russia to get their own Bible.

On August 8, 2010, in Denton, Texas, the Denton Record Chronicle reporting on a Witness Deaf convention in the area that drew around 1,000 said: “The first convention for the Deaf was hosted in the early 1990s in New Jersey. Then came conventions on both coasts, with others following in Michigan and Texas. Barbara Anderson Uncensored: Eyewitness To Deceit Book.

Barbara Anderson was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses from 1954 through 1997. She worked at Watchtower’s headquarters in Brooklyn, NY, from 1982 to 1992 where during her last four years there, she researched the movement’s official history (published in 1993) and did research as well as wrote a number of articles for their Awake! magazine. They brought to Him one who was Deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him. Philistine Cemetery May Solve Biblical Mystery

Ancient philistine cemetery in Israel could solve one of the Bible’s biggest mysteries in the history of mankind.

ASHKELON, Israel -- The Independent News: One of the Bible’s deepest and most important mysteries may be about to be solved.

Archaeologists appear to have found a cemetery belonging to the Philistines for the first time ever, along with the remains of 200 people who were buried there. And together they might help shed light on one the Bible’s most mysterious people.

The scientists have said that the members of the Biblical nation didn’t appear to be “philistines” finding the people buried alongside jewellery and perfumed oil. They will now conduct further tests that could shed yet more light on the maligned people. Those discoveries might be enough to make us rethink today’s use of the word philistine, which tends to refer to uncultured people who don’t know enough about the arts.

"The Philistines have had some bad press, and this will dispel a lot of myths," said Lawrence Stager, an architect who has led the expedition that found the cemetery since 1985. "The Bible's Buried Secrets" from the KPBS.org TV show.

Until now, most of our understanding of the Philistines came from the things that they have left behind. But now for the first time we have found their remains.

"After decades of studying what Philistines left behind, we have finally come face to face with the people themselves," said Daniel M. Master, professor of archaeology at Wheaton College and one of the leaders of the excavation. "With this discovery we are close to unlocking the secrets of their origins."

The discovery was finally unveiled Sunday at the close of a 30-year excavation by the Leon Levy Expedition, a team of archaeologists from Harvard University, Boston College, Wheaton College in Illinois and Troy University in Alabama.

The archaeologists kept the discovery a secret for three years until the end of their dig because of a unique hazard of archaeology in modern-day Israel: they did not want to attract ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters, Mr Master said.

"We had to bite our tongues for a long time," he said.

In the past, the ultra-Orthodox have staged demonstrations at excavations where human remains are found, arguing that the remains could be Jewish and that disturbing them would violate a religious prohibition.

Mr Stager's team dug down about 3 metres (10 feet) to uncover the cemetery, which they found to have been used centuries later as a Roman vineyard.

On hands and knees, workers brushed away layers of dusty earth to reveal the brittle white bones of entire Philistine skeletons reposed as they were three millennia ago.

Decorated juglets believed to have contained perfumed oil were found in graves. Some bodies were still wearing bracelets and earrings. Others had weapons.

The archeologists also discovered some cremations, which the team say were rare and expensive for the period, and some larger jugs contained the bones of infants.

"The cosmopolitan life here is so much more elegant and worldly and connected with other parts of the eastern Mediterranean," Stager said, adding that this was in contrast to the more modest village lifestyle of the Israelites who lived in the hills to the east.

Archaeologists and biblical scholars have long believed the Philistines came from the Aegean region, based on pottery found in excavations of Philistine sites.

But scholars have debated where exactly in the Aegean region the Philistines came from: Mainland Greece, the islands of Crete or Cyprus, or even Anatolia, in modern-day Turkey.

The bones might hold the answers, said archaeologist Yosef (Yossi) Garfinkel, an Israeli expert on the period who did not participate in the dig. He called the cemetery find "a very significant discovery indeed."

The excavation of the cemetery has also shed light on Philistine burial practices.

The Philistines buried their dead with perfume bottles, placed near the face. Near the legs were jars that likely held oil, wine or food. In some cases, archaeologists found the dead were buried wearing necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even toe rings. Some were buried with their weapons.

"This is how Philistines treated their dead, and it's the code book to decoding everything," said archaeologist Adam Aja, a participant in the dig.

Finds from the cemetery went on display Sunday in an Israel Museum exhibition held at the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem.

Elderly Deaf Couple Had Been Dead Inside Home

Deaf News: An elderly couple had been dead inside their Ohio home for weeks before police found them last Thursday.

MADISONVILLE, OH -- A couple had been dead inside their Madisonville home for weeks before authorities discovered their bodies Thursday, according to Cincinnati Police.

Spokesperson Tiffaney Hardy said the couple accidentally left their vehicle running in the garage on Bramble Avenue, near Edith Avenue. Both were Deaf and likely didn’t hear the engine, Hardy said.

Initial reports indicate they died as a result of asphyxiation from the fumes.

The bodies were discovered when someone went to check on the couple after not hearing from them for several weeks.

"They are frequent church goers and had not been seen by other church members as well as community members became concerned about not having seen them," family friend James Jawarek told FOX19 NOW.

Jawarek identified the couple as Wayne Flammer and Joan Flammer.

The family of the victims gathered around the home and were in shock that this could happen. Jawarek described the couple as good Christians.

"Very friendly," Jawarek said. "They got along with people."

It’s Why Deaf People Don’t Report To Police

When it comes to domestic abuse and sexual assault reporting, Deaf women are underserved by police in the United States.

NEW YORK CITY -- International Business Times: The abuse started with a few insults. When Wendy, a Deaf woman, met her college boyfriend, he was popular and attractive, so she put up with the harsh way he spoke to her. Then he gave her a black eye.

“I thought it was normal, and that that was love; that it was just a part of when you care about somebody,” Wendy, 38, who didn’t want to be identified by her real name because she has yet to go public with her story, said through a sign language interpreter. “Then the insults became a little bit physical, and then a cycle began.”

The cycle included her boyfriend holding her hostage in locked rooms after arguments, once almost forcing her to go to the bathroom in a bucket because she couldn’t leave. He beat her up on her 27th birthday, but she didn’t report it at least partly out of fear no one would believe her. She tells the story of a fellow Deaf friend who was abused by a significant other, and when police came to investigate, they didn’t believe the Deaf friend was abused.

“It’s why Deaf people don’t report to police,” Wendy, a Deaf community advocate in the central New York area, said. “It’s always ‘they won’t believe me.’ ”

Deaf women experience sexual and domestic abuse at much higher rates than women who hear, but are unlikely to report it. A new initiative announced last week from the Vera Institute of Justice, a New York City-based nonprofit, and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime aims to change that by training police officers to facilitate communication with Deaf victims, such as teaching them how to find legitimate sign language interpreters. Activists say many law enforcement officials don’t know the best way to communicate with Deaf victims, discouraging the victims from reporting abuse.

“Now, they don’t have equal access to get the help they need,” Erin Esposito, a Deaf woman and executive director of the Rochester, New York-based Advocacy Services for Abused Deaf Victims, said of Deaf victims. “The goal is to create an atmosphere where Deaf people can feel confident to go into a police station and get help.”

The Translating Justice Initiative is a three-year program, funded with a $1 million grant from the U.S. Justice Department that will go toward virtual and in-person training sessions of police officers, prosecutors and court administrators to help them better communicate with the Deaf, as well as the hard of hearing and those with limited English proficiency. The training is intended to enable police agencies to look at their policies regarding Deaf victims, revamp them to better facilitate communication and show officers how to better use resources already out there to help the Deaf, said Susan Shah, one of the co-leaders of the initiative.

Officers will be instructed in telephonic interpretation services, finding interpreters in the community and ways to avoid outdated technology, Shah said. Another major part of the training is teaching police to reach out to the Deaf community so Deaf victims of domestic and sexual abuse can feel more comfortable coming forward.

There is no cookie-cutter training for every police agency as every one has different levels of how well they interact with Deaf people, Esposito said. While there have been localized efforts to fund programs for Deaf victims, this is one of the only national initiatives providing this type of training, activists said.

No one event spawned the project, which has been in development with the Justice Department and other agencies, such as Advocacy Services for Abused Deaf Victims and the National Center for Victims of Crime. The Office for Victims of Crime said in a statement that inroads had been made in recent years to serve victims who have disabilities or limited English proficiency, and that the program came about to bring together local efforts to help Deaf victims.... Deaf Church Treasurer Charged In Sexual Assault

Deaf News: Deaf church treasurer, sex offender, charged with molesting disabled churchgoer in Kansas.

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- A Deaf church treasurer, who is a convicted sex offender, is in jail after he was accused of molesting a church goer who has disabilities.

Rodney Sexton is charged with aggravated sexual battery. He is accused of molesting a 31-year-old man, who is Deaf and functions like an 8 year old.

Sexton made his first court appearance on Monday. A judge set his bond at $100,000 cash only.

Sexton is treasurer at Deaf Liberty Baptist Church in Overland Park, Kansas. It's unclear if his convictions from the mid-1980s for sex crimes were known.

Sexton is on the roster to teach sign language at Maple Woods Community College in January and he has apparently taught at the Metropolitan Community College in the past, according to online records.

Because of the Christmas holiday, KCTV5 could not reach community college representatives for comment.

The mother of the 31-year-old victim is heartbroken and angry. She wants to know whether church leaders knew about Sexton's background.

"I think people knew," the mother said. "This should never happen to another family."

In the mid-1980s, Sexton faced six felony sex charges involving a child. He was convicted on two counts and served time in a Kansas prison. He is not listed on the Kansas Sex Offender Registry because his convictions occurred before 1994.

He was released from prison in 1989 and released from probation four years later.

The victim's mother said her son loves his church and trusted Sexton. She said Sexton pressured her son to keep the molestation secret.

"This shouldn't happen to anybody sitting in a church or at school. This needs to be stopped," the mother told KCTV5. "My boy deserves to be protected."

People with special needs are four times more likely to be abused because they often don't realize they are being abused or they cannot articulate about the abuse.

Deaf Christian Woman Gang Raped By Muslims

Deaf christian woman brutally gang raped, racially abused by Muslims.

KASUR, Pakistan -- Three Muslim men broke into the home of a Deaf christian woman in a village in the district of Kasur, Pakistan, and took turns raping her while the men of the family were at work.

The incident occurred in the Ganda Singh Wala village in the Kasur district of Punjab, according to the Pakistan Christian Post.

The woman reportedly screamed for mercy while being raped, but no one came to her assistance. Relatives of the woman have retained the services of christian lawyer Sardar Mushtaq Gill, who runs an advocacy group offering free legal assistance to Pakistani Christians and other minorities who are victims of abuse and religious persecution.

The lawyer filed the first information report with the police and is trying to reconstruct the facts of the attack, though he admits that it is not easy to get a case like this prosecuted fairly in Pakistan. One suspect, Muhammad Umar, has been arrested while the other two attackers reportedly escaped, and Gill is not optimistic about seeing justice done.

“It’s very difficult to get a punishment for those responsible,” he told the Fides news agency. “Often in these cases the police take no action or, worse, side with the rapists.”

Gill also noted that cases of violence against christians and other religious minorities are far more frequent than is commonly known because of a system that turns a blind eye to religious persecution.

“Christian families or witnesses are pressured to withdraw complaints,” Gill added. “Violence against women and children of religious minorities, the weak and vulnerable, is widespread in Pakistan and is often carried out in silence. The cases and the stories do not come to light and when victims talk about it they are intimidated,” he said.

Islam is the official state religion in Pakistan, which has some of the most severe blasphemy laws in the world. Freedom of speech is greatly restricted and “defiling the Prophet Muhammad” carries a death sentence, while damaging the Qur’an is punishable by life imprisonment. “Insulting another’s religious feelings” can result in jail sentences up to ten years, but is applied only to those disparaging Islam...

Boycott Wells Fargo Ad 'Learning Sign Language'

Franklin Graham calls for Christian boycott of Wells Fargo for featuing lesbian moms, who learns American Sign Language their advertiser.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Rev. Franklin Graham is changing which bank his organizations will use because he objects to a lesbian couple and their Deaf daughter who appears in a Wells Fargo ad.

Graham is calling on Christians to boycott corporations that promote homosexuality, and says he will do his part by moving all of his ministries' money out of Wells Fargo.

Graham says he is not targeting companies that hire or serve gay and lesbian customers because that's a part of doing business. But he said he wants Christians to stop giving their money to businesses that use their advertising dollars to promote homosexuality. Graham is the CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse.

He says one way Christians can speak out is by not doing business with those who he says promote sin and stand against God's laws.

A spokesperson for Wells Fargo says the bank has proudly supported the LGBT community for a long time and the advertisement reflects the company's values.

The Charlotte Observer reports that accounts for Graham’s ministries could total in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Graham says he plans to publicize a list of companies that feature same-sex couples in their advertising.

A spokesman for North Carolina-based BB&T, a statewide LGBT rights group based in Raleigh said Graham is on the losing side of moral history.

What is an Atheist? An atheist is a person who does not believe that any gods exist. Upon seeing numerous frictions and conflicts between religious Christians and non-believers I felt the urge and desire to share my story, a testimony, to explain why I believe in God.

I also wanted to offer some insights into several topics with hope to explain why some people may not believe in God and why I do. And to offer some insights on why some people might have lost their faith in church, religions, God and the Bible. There are logical explanation for the trends that we're witnessing. And what I believe we could do about it.

Sewell explained why authority is so essential and why this Deaf preacher turned into an atheist. What went wrong in the very beginning of his journey to become a preacher? This is the age of entitlements. This society is full of people who think they are entitled to things that are sacred. Because of this we're turning into a dysfunctional society, which does not seem to know what to believe any more.

Deaf Pastor Who Turned Atheist Is 'Vengeful, Pathological Liar' Who Needs to 'Repent;' CNN Article Is 'Full of Lies,' Says Old Church.

Pastor of the Virtual Deaf Church, Justin Vollmar, says he is now an atheist.

After claiming in an explosive CNN article Monday that he began losing his faith in God after being overworked and underpaid at a church run by a tyrannical, golf-loving pastor who made $80,000 a year, Deaf pastor turned atheist, Justin Vollmar, is being dismissed as a "vengeful, pathological liar," who needs to "repent" of his sins by his old church.

"The word that he is spreading about myself and the church is not good and we are going to have to shun him until he is ready to apologize to us. But apparently he is choosing a worse road. I believe the devil is winning him," said Terry Michael Buchholz, senior pastor of the Hampshire View Baptist Deaf Church in Silver Spring, Maryland., where Vollmar worked for seven years.

Vollmar ran the Virtual Deaf Church online for four years before proclaiming in a YouTube video Friday that he is now an atheist, renouncing the virgin birth and the belief that Jesus is the Son of God who was raised from the dead, as well as the Bible being the word of God.

"There is no such thing as Holy Spirit. Word of God is NOT inspired God-breathed book. Church is completely men's invention. All I believe previously as a Christian has been turned upside," he said in complete renunciation of his faith.

"I am coming out of closet. I no longer believe in God. I am an Atheist now. This video explains my journey to doubt."

On Monday, he detailed his descent into atheism in a first-person account published by CNN. He charged that he began losing his faith in Christianity after an experience with an unnamed Christian senior pastor at a church in Silver Spring, Md.

Vollmar said he was made to work "for little pay" for seven years while the senior pastor pulled down a salary of $80,000 a year and lived a life of leisure.

"I was a pastor in Silver Spring, Maryland, working 60 hours a week for little pay. My senior pastor was a harsh taskmaster, scolding me and always pushing me to work harder. Meanwhile, he earned $80,000 a year and played golf two times a week. I lived in poverty and did not see my children much. I got burned out," wrote Vollmar.

"I resigned my position and was shunned by the church. My faith in God was severely shaken. I started to have doubts about the Bible's claims. I questioned whether God's love, which is supposed to reside inside Christians, was real," he said.

In Vollmar's work history on his Linkedin profile, he lists himself as a vlogger and community leader shows that he worked as an associate pastor at Hampshire View Baptist Deaf Church in Silver Spring, Md.
