The police took Deaf protesters to the streets of India.

PUNE, India -- Deaf community in Maharashtra has had enough. Pradeep More General Secretary of State Level Association of the Deaf passionately voices the demands of the community.

Deaf individuals gathered outside the Disability Commissioner's office in Pune have decided they will not take no for an answer. It is high time, the government provides accessibilty and quality education to Deaf people.

The group has decided to march to the Mantralaya to meet the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, if their demands are not met.

The Pune Police on Monday resorted to lathi-charge to disperse a crowd of Deaf students who were staging a demonstration in Pune, resulting in 35 of the students getting injured in the incident. The cops also detained around 170 activists working for the Maharashtra Deaf Association but later released them.

Nearly 11,000 hearing-impaired youths from across Maharashtra had gathered outside the Social Welfare Commissionerate in Pune near the police commissioner’s office, pressing for their long-standing demands. Among other things, the students were demanding the right to quality education, prevention of fraudulent distribution of disability certificates to able-bodied individuals and provision of trained interpreters for deaf students, reports said.

The police action against the protesters, most of whom were students, was widely criticised by opposition political parties, with many slamming the BJP government for the state of affairs. Meanwhile, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the Pune police commissioner to submit a detailed report on the matter by Tuesday morning, as per reports.

The Pune Police had said that it had decided not to proceed with the FIR process against the protesters and hence no FIR was filed. On the other hand, the cops have reportedly claimed that around 7 to 8 policemen had also suffered injuries during the protest... Read More: Times Now News.

Ironically, the practice of teaching signs to hearing babies is booming due to practical, emotional, and cognitive benefits validated by research. Hundreds of thousands of hearing people are taking American Sign Language (ASL) classes in high school as well as college -- making ASL the third most-studied language, according to Modern Language Association. Many come out of the experience proclaiming how beautiful ASL is.

Even while ASL is beautified, Deafness is still perceived as something that needs to be fixed. This makes Deaf people seem unequal, abnormal, and even defective. Deaf people are perplexed by this, as they see themselves as equal, diverse, and an attribute to this world.

"TODAY WE ASK, WHEN CAN YOU SEE US THE SAME WAY DEAF SEE THEMSELVES?"

It is our hope that this message will raise awareness, and at the same time, encourage Americans to join the Deaf community in the ongoing fight for equality.

WASHINGTON DC -- Donald J. Trump had no American Sign Language interpreters at his Inauguration Day, according to this Liberal.

Saw a video from a Deaf man on Facebook saying there were no official ASL interpreters at the Inauguration. Nobody wasn’t there, but heard this from Deaf friends who were there. Anybody know if this is true?

The Deaf community wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t have interpreters, or maybe there's something fishy going on, is it a rigged or not, you decide.

Hillary Clinton's campaign were disappointment from the Republican swept to victory over Hillary in the ultimate triumph for a campaign that repeatedly shattered the conventions of politics a remarkable upset, that's mainly reasons. Deaf and Dying at the Ottawa Hospital

Deaf and dying: How a volunteer team brings palliative care comfort through communication in the capital of Canada.

OTTAWA -- The first experience Monica Elaine Campbell had with palliative care was helping a woman who had lost her ability to speak because of throat cancer.

Campbell, profoundly Deaf since birth, is an excellent lip reader and staff at an Ottawa Hospital asked if she could interpret the dying woman’s words. The woman had been communicating with paper and pen, but now was too weak even to do that.

“I was very hesitant. Then I thought, well, the least I could do is give it a try,” said Campbell, who is able to speak despite never having heard a word herself. “I put my hand on her right arm and said, ‘I’ve never done this before. I will try my best.”

Campbell leaned close as the woman mouthed her words. Campbell repeated it back and had the woman nod yes if she had understood correctly. She spent five hours with the woman, relaying messages between her and her family and the medical team. She was able to interpret about 85 per cent of what the woman told her.

“I came away a different person,” Campbell said. “I was very touched by the experience.”

The dying woman had not been Deaf, but the experience got Campbell thinking about the communication needs of people like herself: the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. A few years later, Campbell was asked to help a Deaf friend who was about to receive bad news about her cancer diagnosis.

“I didn’t know much about palliative care, but she was struggling with her terminal illness,” Campbell said. “I thought, my goodness, what if that was me? I thought, I should talk to my Deaf friends about death and dying and what our experiences have been.”

Those conversations led Campbell and her friend, sign language interpreter Christine Wilson, to start up the Ottawa Deaf Palliative Care Team, a group of volunteers that provide end-of-life care for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and their families. In 1999, she enrolled in palliative care courses at Algonquin College with two Deaf colleagues (the Deaf use a capital D to refer to the sub-culture of people who communicate with sign language; “Hard of Hearing” are those who have lost some or most of the hearing but can still use some speech, sometimes augmented with sign language; the “Deafened” or “Oral Deaf” have lost some or all of their hearing, but either learned to speak before their deafness or, like Campbell, learned to speak despite it... The Deaf Decry Discrimination In Employment

Profoundly Deaf people and Hearing Impaired persons are often the last to be hired and the first to be fired.

New Vision share an article by Cecilia Okoth: "We are often the last to be hired and the first to be fired, potential employers consider our disability over our qualifications and ability to deliver on jobs." The Deaf are concerned that the job market is not fair to them a move they say has worsened their predicament.

"We are often the last to be hired and the first to be fired. Potential employers consider our disability over our qualifications and ability to deliver on jobs," Ambrose Murangira, Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) executive director, said.

According to Murangira, the lack of a policy by public service ministry to promote employment for marginalized groups makes it worse for people living with disabilities (PWDs) to get and retain any form of employment.

"We have been relegated to working in Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) and in the informal sector because the chances of getting employed in the public service and mainstream organisations are very limited," he added.

Murangira, also a Deaf and Disability scholar was speaking at a press briefing that was attended by 20 representatives of Deaf graduates sponsored by UNAD at National Theatre early this week.

"This is double jeopardy for us because to study and graduate as a Deaf person means overcoming great odds only to be shunned by the job market," said Rogers Kadoma, one of the graduates.

According to the 2014 census, there are 1.083,456 Deaf persons in the country. However scanty information shows that around 1% are in formal employment.

Doreen Sandra Kauma the gender and vulnerable groups' coordinator at UNAD said without affirmative action, more employers will not feel a sense of obligation to employ the deaf and PWDs as a whole.

A recent Disability Rights Coalition report suggests that employees with disabilities should at all times not be less than 5% for private employers and 10% for the public service.

However the labour market in Uganda presents multiple hurdles for the deaf and PWDs to overcome if they are to be absorbed in the job market. These range from physical access, access to information about vacancies, and self-confidence of PWDs to seek out opportunities because of the unique challenges and what society perceives them as... Deaf Grassroots Movement protest draws small crowd, attention.

STAUNTON, Virginia -- Only a few people attended Thursday morning’s Deaf Equal Access Now rally, organized by the Deaf Grassroots Movement and Wesley Arey, a member of the Shenandoah Valley Club of the Deaf.

Arey wore a large, green bubble-sized costume with the words “Deaf Access Now” plastered across the back. He walked up and down Beverley Street handing out pamphlets to passersby.

Despite the small crowd, the rally drew attention through its bright green signs that lined the block from Lewis Street to North Central Avenue. Signs called for equal pay for Deaf people, access to American Sign Language for Deaf children, and equal access to jobs and services.

Arey got involved with the movement after seeing a video on Facebook that outlined the realities that Deaf people face on a day-to-day basis. The video went viral and Arey decided to help. Last year, he helped campaign for a rally held in Washington, D.C.

“Over one thousand people showed up to the rally. It went on for two days,” Arey said in an email. “There were speeches, testimonials, and chants. After the rally, we went home and decided to continue meeting.” That’s when they came up with the name Deaf Grassroots Movement.

“Since then, it has expanded from seven people with small-town ideas for Deaf equal access to countless activists, representatives and political advocates countrywide,” Arey said. “But we have a long way to go. My role in this is the interim executive director.”

Thursday’s rallies took place across the state - not just in Staunton. Deaf protesters in Richmond, Fairfax, Norfolk, Martinsville, Wytheville and Lynchburg also participated.

“This rally includes 113 cities around the U.S,” Arey said. “Now that we have spread out, we are expecting fewer people from each city. I am expecting 10 people.”

“DGM strives to make noises, get attention and encourage others to fix Deaf people’s issues,” Arey said. “We hope this will get the lawmakers involved. We want them to recognize us and get involved in initializing the process of helping us solve our problem.”

DGM Raises Awareness For Deaf Community

Deaf Grassroots Movement raises awareness for Deaf community.

GULFPORT, MS -- WLOX: Members of a nationwide organization called the Deaf Grassroots Movement met outside Gulfport City Hall on Thursday in an effort to raise awareness for the needs of the Deaf community.

They held signs and spoke to city leaders about opportunities offered by the city, as well as how to improve their education, job opportunities, and communications access.

City spokesman Chris Vignes said the city is one of the only on the coast that offers sign language interpreters during city council meetings. He thinks it's important for groups like DGM to raise awareness and also for the city to pay attention to their requests.

"Anytime you have a chance to help people in need, whether it's a special disability or bringing awareness to a cause, we're glad that they're here, because we can learn from what they need and how we can better help," Vignes said.

On it's website, the group says the goal is to promote equality for all with the quality of life improved for the Deaf community.

This is the second time the Deaf Grassroots Movement has promoted a nationwide rally. The first was on May 4, 2016.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Get outside and find a street corner on October 20th! Fight for our rights for access, education, and employment. Last week, the Deaf Grassroots Movement (DGM) and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) met via videoconference.

We talked about how we can work together, build a relationship between DGM and NAD, and identify our plans for the future. The primary focus of our discussion was about October 20th. On that day, in 85 cities across America, people will stand at a street corner with signages to bring attention to three important issues for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community: access, education, and employment.

Howard - DGM and the NAD work together and support each other. Allow me to explain how. The NAD has always met with the federal government to discuss various issues including education, employment, and access. While such discussions are productive, sometimes we get nowhere. Thanks to DGM’s movement and making noise about our needs, the federal government reached out the NAD recognizing the their actions. This helps the NAD continue the dialogue we want to have with the federal government. I am very appreciative of the work DGM has done to support the rights of deaf and hard of hearing people.

So, October 20th is a very important day! You can get involved by looking for the DGM Facebook page in your state, and find out details about October 20th. You can join for an hour, a few hours, or all day! Your time contributed to this movement will have an impact across the country! This movement will occur every now and then, not just October 20th, so we can remain visible and bring attention to the community including the politicians. We want them to know that we are still here!

Deaf Connecticuters Wants Terps Jobs Back

WATCH: The Deaf community is converging at the capitol to file a complaint in an effort to get interpreters their jobs back.

NEW HAVEN, CT -- The Deaf community is converging at the capitol to file a complaint in an effort to get sign-language interpreters their jobs back.

Many in the Deaf community say they’re losing a vital resource for them. As a cost-saving measure, the state laid off about 40 interpreters.

We spoke with one of those interpreters last week, she says not only is she concerned about making ends meet for her family, she’s also worried about her clients.

The group ‘We the Deaf People’ told us this has thrown the Deaf population in the state into turmoil. Deaf people relied on these interpreters in schools, emergency rooms, and doctors’ offices. The state expects to save money by contracting with private agencies which can be found by calling 211.

So, on Monday members of ‘We the Deaf People’ will file a complaint at a hearing. It’s being held by the Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities or OPA. That’s scheduled to start around 10 a.m.

WATCH: Deaf News: Deaf Greek protests shouting "Give money to Providence Education, go get them from the plutocracy"

ATHENS, Greece -- Thousands of disabled, chronically ill, parents and guardians with disabilities from across the country of Greece, and teachers in special education and mainstream schools gathered early in the afternoon in the center of Athens, participating in nationwide pananapiriko rally.

The mobilization involved the Coordination Committee Struggle Disabled, the Single Parents Association, Guardians of Disabled Attica, the Association of Workers Unit, Foundations, Schools Special Education, and the Deputy Initiative, demanding "No more mockery, teachers in all schools" as wrote their banners.

The demonstration was attended by the KKE MP Christos Katsotis.

The disabled and chronically ill gathered at Omonoia Square and made protest to the Constitution, shouting slogans such as "Give money to Providence - Education, go get them from the plutocracy" and "euro sacks to bankers, the Special schools were doing warehouses.'

The third memorandum the lowest disability pension is 87 euros, the retirement age for disabled workers go to 67 years and 50% reduction in the state budget expenditure on Welfare, leading to the closure of institutions by loading higher cost care to families. Moreover abolished and cut disability benefits and chronic sufferers and Special Schools close, imposed alimony.

Among other claims, the SEAAN: No cut in benefits and disability pensions, extending them to groups who do not get benefits, such as Deaf, Alzheimer. No pension below 600 euros unemployment benefit of 600 euros to all unable to work disabled, chronically ill and massive recruitment with constant work. No payment for drugs and treatments. Open all Special Schools in full operation, massive recruitment of permanent staff, to repeal the alimony.

Canadian 'Deaf Superintendent Now' Petition

Deaf News: Canadian protesters say Deaf students’ new superintendent who can hear must go - but not everyone agrees.

TORONTO -- A loud campaign advocating for a Deaf Superintendent circulated online and around the world, then didn’t get what it was fighting for.

The Provincial Schools Branch (PSB), which oversees the provinces four schools for the Deaf, announced last week it hired a hearing superintendent, Jeanne Leonard.

The announcement also said the branch hired Heather Gibson, who is Deaf, in a new position called “assistant to the superintendents.” Though that brings a Deaf person to an administrative level previously dominated by hearing people, some in the Deaf community say that’s not what they were asking for.

“It totally doesn’t make sense - there are qualified Deaf candidates,” Rose Etheridge, said through an interpreter at a protest Monday in front of the Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. “They’re trying to pacify us,” added Etheridge, whose Oct. 22 video calling for a Deaf Superintendent has hit 20,000 views. Huffington Post - The #DeafTalent hashtag began making waves after a NY Daily News interview with Catalina Sandino Moreno raised red flags in the Deaf community. Moreno, a hearing actress, was cast to play a Deaf woman in the leading role of her new film Medeas. But in the NYDN interview, it became clear that Moreno has had very little exposure to deafness or Deaf culture.

Deaf Protest Rally At The White House In D.C.

WATCH [ASL] - Information updates on the Deaf protest at the White House in Washington, District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON -- Deaf protest rally will be held on September 5th and 6th 2015 at the white house in Washington DC. The protest is all about unemployment, discrimination, civil rights and language barriers in the United States. Here's the information of the location, time, meet, trip, and employment statistics.

The White House announces a new location for the protest area at the Ellipse Park, instead the Lafayette Square due to the renovation. Up to 20,000 Deaf people gathering at the park at 10 am - 4 pm - as seen on the map: Here.

This is an explanation on the base of erroneous information on the percentage of Deaf unemployment. Reading and understanding statistics are complicated. It's imperative to be critic of any research or papers with numbers: 2014 Disability Statistics Annual Report.

Gallaudet Report - There are some statistics investigating the employment rate of working-age individuals with hearing loss in the United States. The statistics for 2013 are made available in the Disability Statistics Compendium, specifically Table 2.3. The data within Table 2.3 is based on data from the 2012 American Community Survey from the Census Bureau.

Stop Discrimination Deaf People

Deaf people should be treated as equal and not discrimination.

This video to educate for hearing people of which apparently to stop treating Deaf and Hard of Hearing people as second-class citizen. The business corporations or small companies often denied the job applicants which Deaf and HOH feels treated as less important than those of other people in the same society.

Unfortunately, when Deaf and Hard of Hearing people look for work, they may encounter employment discrimination. Prospective employers can discriminate, either openly or subtly. This discrimination happens because of either overt prejudice, or because of ignorance about deafness and hearing loss. For example, an employer may errenously think that a Deaf employee will need an interpreter all of the time.

The Power of Sign Language

Deaf News: Human Rights Watch: Sign language is critical for Deaf people to be able to communicate, express themselves, and learn.

SYDNEY, Australia -- Deaf children have a right to a quality education, like all other children, in a language and environment that maximizes their potential. In a video released on October 18, 2013, in conjunction with a global conference in Sydney on equality for Deaf people, Human Rights Watch shows some of the challenges faced by Deaf children and young people, and the opportunities sign language education offers Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.

Worldwide, Deaf children and young people are often denied an education, including in sign language. There is a lack of teachers well-trained in sign language, and in many cases parents do not know that their children have a right to go to school and that they can learn if only given the opportunity.

“Sign language is critical for Deaf people to be able to communicate, express themselves, and learn,” said Shantha Rau Barriga, disability rights director at Human Rights Watch. “Depriving Deaf people of the opportunity to learn sign language can condemn them to devastating isolation.”

Hundreds of Deaf people, their families, government officials, and disability experts have gathered in Sydney for a major conference on October 16-18 organized by the World Federation of the Deaf.

Human Rights Watch documented cases of Deaf children and young people in Nepal, China, and northern Uganda who were denied their right to education in sign language. Some Deaf children and young people interviewed did not attend school at all. Teachers and parents often have the misconception that Deaf children lack the intellectual capacity to learn.
