Texas Police Hires First Deaf Female Officer

A Texas woman is making history after being sworn in as the state's first Deaf female police officer.

DALHART, Texas -- History is made in the Lone Star State. The newest recruit for the Dalhart Police Department becomes the first Deaf female police officer.

Her name is Erica Trevino and she's dreamed of being an officer since she was in kindergarten. But growing up, people told her she couldn't achieve her goal because of her disability. Today she proved them wrong as she was officially sworn in with Dalhart Police Department.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"I'm ready to get to work," said Ofc. Erica Trevino after her swearing-in. It's that same drive and tenacity that led Chief David Conner to look past her disability and discover her special qualities. And that list is a long one.

"I believe she can do the job just like any other other police officer," said David Conner, Dalhart Police Chief. "She has proven time and time again that she can and will overcome those obstacles. She has her bachelor's degree in forensic science, she graduated 3rd from her class in the Academy, she's very intelligent and articulate."

Despite speaking English, Officer Trevino speaks some Spanish and is able to sign in five different languages including Spanish and Japanese. But there's one word she didn't pick up.

"People told me no because I was deaf," said Ofc. Trevino.

"So we've learned a long time ago not to tell Erica no," said Cindi Trevino, Erica's mom.

"She hasn't let life stand in her way, so who am I tell her she can't do it. Give her a chance," said Chief Conner.

Despite her impressive set of skills, the critics and naysayers remained. But so did Erica's resilience.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"I just realized I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can do and what I cannot do. So I decided to become a police officer. It's been a long, hard path, but here I am," said Ofc. Trevino.

Her first day is April 14th. Chief Conner said he's created special procedures to help Trevino with communication. She is able to hear calls over the police radio but dispatch will also text all calls to her phone.

The department bought a special cell phone to help with that. Plus, Trevino will also have a partner during her shifts.

Officer Trevino has been Deaf her entire life and has had to overcome stereotypes. She made history today, but she's just getting started. She said her next goal is to join the department's Criminal Investigation Department.

Treatment of Deaf Couple at Wendy’s Drive Thru

Treatment of Deaf couple at Wendy's sparks outrage in Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas -- A local Deaf couple recently visited the Wendy's at 305 West Slaughter Lane in South Austin for food. They handed a note to the employee with their order at the window. But instead of immediately getting the fries and burgers they requested, they got a handwritten message.

They say an employee handed it to them after the fast food restaurant didn't get their order right.

The couple feels they were mistreated while trying to use the drive-thru.

Elisa Vita said the message left a bad taste in her mouth.

"They gave me the note and I felt very upset about that. I felt like they looked at me as less than other people, as inferior to other people and it was really not a good feeling,” said Vita.

Vita posted an image of the message on Facebook.

"It really hit a nerve with people," said Vita.

Thousands have weighed in online sharing similar experiences at fast food restaurants nationwide. Vita said she spoke with the manager of the South Austin Wendy's who gave her some free meal coupons and was incredibly apologetic about the situation.

She doesn't feel like enough was done to make it right.

"I deserve the right to the same service and obviously Wendy's needs to provide more in-depth training that explicitly says everyone deserves to access the drive-thru," said Vita.

A University of Texas professor said fast food worker or not, it's best to just follow a Deaf person's lead when they're trying to communicate with you.

"They [Deaf People] are skilled at working with and interacting with people with whom they don't share a common language. Try not to become frustrated if you're the clerk," said Richard Meier, the Department of Linguistics chair at UT.

Accessibility issues for the Deaf expand far beyond the drive-thru. Faculty within UT's ASL Program are beginning to research them further.

"One problem is there may not be interpreters readily available or the interpreter may be available through a video link," said Meier. "So our question is, how well is this working?"

Meier and his colleagues plan on specifically looking at healthcare first. With such a large Deaf community based in Austin, many believe it's the perfect place to conduct such research. Many say there can never be too much emphasis placed on improving accessibility as it benefits everyone, not just the Deaf.

Houston's ASL Interpreter Steals The Show

WATCH: Sign language interpreter Ashley Henderson stole the show at a flood press conference held by mayor the City of Houston.

HOUSTON, TX -- During Mayor Sylvester Turner's press conference to address Houston's disastrous flooding on Tuesday there was one person who stood out among the city's officials. But it wasn't a politician, member of an emergency agency, or a press officer. It was the sign language interpreter the city hired.

Ashley Henderson is an energetic interpreter who often works with the city, especially during televised press conferences that take place during disasters. She was there during last year's flooding and again this year. She's employed by the Nightingale Interpreting firm in Houston.

Her signing style became the subject of a Reddit.com post on Wednesday. It was hard to miss her enthusiastic facial expressions, and most people who commented on the post pointed out how that's just how effective sign language works.

"Yes, it may look funny to those who don't use or know sign language," Henderson told Chron.com.

"But it would look funny to (American Sign Language) users if there weren't any. Basically, if I talked English with no affect, intonation, pauses, it would be difficult for someone listening to pull the correct meaning, or to even be interested at all," she explained.

"Expressions are the lifeblood of ASL and provide the much needed grammar, tone, structure and meaning into an interpretation."

Henderson said she's been getting steady work assignments for city government in Houston for three years. She received her training at Lone Star College and became a certified sign language interpreter about six years ago. She enjoys her work but said sometimes people just don't get the importance of what she does.

"Some people complain about having to watch the interpreters next to whoever is speaking on TV because if you don't know the language it can be distracting," she said.

"Obviously, there are captions available on TV's, but I think we can all agree that most of the time the captioning quality during a live event can get jumbled, making it difficult to read in general, and it makes for a disadvantage to a significant number of Houstonians who need pertinent lifesaving information."

Deaf Man Murdered By Caretaker In Texas

Deaf News: Texas ratchet woman fatally shoots Deaf man who knocked on her door and leaves note on his body saying "sorry."

SAN ANTONIO, TX -- Texas woman shot and killed a Deaf man who apparently frightened her by knocking at the door and she left an index card next to his body with the word “sorry” written on it.

Michelle Chase called police about 10 a.m. Sunday to report the shooting, and officers found the man’s body along with the cryptic note outside her apartment door.

The 49-year-old Chase initially denied killing 50-year-old William Farr, who police said showed no obvious signs of trauma or foul play.

An autopsy on Monday revealed Farr had been shot in the chest with a small-caliber bullet.

Chase admitted to police that she shot Farr, who was Deaf and communicated with a computer tablet, on Saturday night because he scared her by knocking on her door.

“He was a nice little guy,” said neighbor Florida Paul. “I didn’t know him that well. He couldn’t hear so he really couldn’t talk he just made noises, strange noises.”

The neighbor said Farr did not live at the apartment complex but frequently visited a woman who did.

Paul said the man had showed up at her own door a couple of weeks ago with multiple stab wounds to his forehead, but she refused to open the door and instead called 911.

“All I saw was like 10 holes in his forehead and blood gushing out, you could barely see his face,” the neighbor said. “But I wouldn’t open my door, because I didn’t know if whoever did that was behind him, and I’m on oxygen, I can’t fight.”

Police did not offer any details about that previous incident or say whether it was connected to Farr’s shooting death.

Chase told police she stayed with a family friend after the shooting and went to a store the next morning, before returning home to pick up clothes for church.

She told police that she called 911 after seeing Farr’s body on the sidewalk outside her door. The video report posted online by WOAI-TV.

Growing Deaf-Owned Businesses In Austin

WATCH: Deaf News - In Austin a top city for Deaf-Owned businesses.

AUSTIN, Texas -- The number of Deaf-owned businesses in the country is growing, and Austin is leading the pack.

Convo, a Deaf-owned telecommunications provider, reports there are more than 200 Deaf-owned businesses in the country, and counting. In the Austin-area there are 30 Deaf-owned businesses.

One of them is Silent Automotive, an auto shop that provides services to both Deaf and Hearing customers. The owners pride themselves on integrity, honesty and quality of service.

“Sound is caused by vibrations, sound doesn’t come out of its own. So we go to the car and feel the vibrations,” said part-owner, Joel DeChristofaro. “We have to be hands on and find exactly where the sound is coming from. Does take a little more time I assume, but I feel it gives us a clearer picture of what happens with the car.” Danny Blalock first started the business back in 2008.

“Because of communication. A lot of my [Deaf] friends have had bad experiences at auto shops, they felt they were getting ripped off,” said Blalock. “Our goal for our business is to keep growing; we’d like to hire more mechanics, Deaf mechanics, to give them opportunity to grow their resume.”

Blalock says the Deaf community continues to grow in Austin, Texas and is becoming more friendly for the Deaf community.

Deaf Woman Brutally Beaten and Robbed

Deaf woman attacked in broad daylight in Austin, Texas.

AUSTIN, TX -- Austin police are looking for four teenagers, three males and one female, who they say followed and punched a Deaf woman, and stole her purse in North Austin, Texas.

Police said the woman was walking on Redlands Street in the Brentwood neighborhood at around 1:20 p.m. Monday when she noticed a Hispanic teen wearing a bandana over his face following her. She told police she kept an eye on the teen because of his covered face.

The teen stopped to talk to a car and the victim lost sight of him. Police said shortly afterward, the same teen and three others in a tan four-door sedan cut off the victim.

"At that time, the same suspect displayed a knife. Then she was struck and punched to the ground, she fell to the ground and the Hispanic female stole her purse," said Austin Police Robbery Sgt. Will White.

White said the teens took off in the same car. That's when Joanna Fried heard banging on her door.

"She was banging on my door and pushing to get in which was scary," Fried said. "Frantic, like really really crying. There was blood on her hands and her face was swollen, and she realized she was scratched up on her leg. It was really hard to understand what she was saying."

Fried said she then called 911 and kept the victim at her house until EMS and police arrived. Fried said she called the victim's ex-husband and explained what happened.

Russell West, director of support operations at the Texas School for the Deaf, said anytime a member of the Deaf community is the victim of a crime, they often don't know their rights. West said Deaf victims need to ask for interpreters...

Deaf Man Arrested After Standoff With SWAT

SWAT standoff with Deaf man in Grand Prairie ends peacefully.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- A standoff with police ended peacefully Monday morning when a man upset about his girlfriend's arrest surrendered after threatening to kill himself.

According to Grand Prairie police spokesperson Lyle Gensler, police responded to a domestic situation at the Sugar Creek Apartments in the 900 block of Duncan Perry just after midnight Monday and found a man and a woman - both legally Deaf - involved in a dispute outside their apartment.

Police determined the woman was intoxicated, and she was arrested for public intoxication.

The arrest upset her boyfriend, who called 911 using Texas Relay, a service that provides telephone access for people with speech or hearing loss. He indicated he had a gun and told dispatchers he wanted his girlfriend to be released from custody or he'd kill himself.

"He has a computer in there that he can talk to via Skype and talk to a live person, and that person can relay to us what he's signing," an officer explained during the standoff. "And that's only if he wants to talk to us.

We've talked to him a couple of times, we've explained to him what's going on, but he still seems unhappy with the whole situation"... Read The Full Story.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- A Deaf woman, 44-year old Lisa Bouillon, was given a two-year sentence for prostitution on Tuesday, after she was arrested for soliciting an undercover police officer.

Bouillon has been arrested several times in the past for solicitation, and that is what led to the tough sentence.

Sign language interpreters were on hand at the Nueces County Courthouse Monday for an unusual prostitution case, in which the defendant was Deaf.

Bouillon, was soliciting an undercover Corpus Christi police officer. Two sign language interpreters communicated each and every work to Bouillon as the first witness, an undercover police officer, testified about what led up to her arrest. A recording of the bust was played for jurors.

It's not the first time Bouillon had been charged with prostitution. She has been arrested several times in the past, and in 2010, she was sentenced to prison for that crime.

Deaf Texas Mom 'Would Never Have Hurt Baby'

A Deaf mom 'would never have hurt Baby' who died of abuse.

DALLAS, Texas -- The mother of a five-month-old baby girl who police say died of abuse told News 8 Wednesday her husband drank a lot and "resented" the child. Maria Zuniga is Deaf. She answered our questions using a sign language interpreter.

Richardson police investigators said she failed to stop her husband, Hector Quiñones, from repeatedly hitting the baby's head on a counter. Zuniga told News 8 that Quiñones who has some slight hearing hurt the baby while she was asleep.

"And now, I'm just going to miss my baby," Zuniga said through the interpreter. "I would never have hurt her. I'd never spanked her, touched her in a bad way, never hurt her." Zuniga said she and her husband argued about taking the baby to a hospital. When they finally did, doctors called police. Quiñones faces a capital murder charge... Read The Full Story.

Deaf parents kill baby that won't stop crying, cops say:

RICHARDSON, Texas -- A couple in Richardson, Texas, are charged in the death of their infant daughter. Police say the father has confessed to his role and is charged with capital murder. And they say the mother did not stop the alleged abuse.

Police say a 5-month-old girl died from her injuries at the hands of her parents at their home. The parents, Maria Zuniga and Hector Cupich-Quinones, were drunk Saturday night, police say.

Both are Deaf. They fought with each other that night. "And then there was a dispute over who was going to take care of the child. The child I guess was a little fussy and they couldn't get the child to quiet," said Sgt. Kevin Perlich, Richardson police.

Charging documents show that the couple was drinking. Quinones allegedly shook the child and slammed her across the kitchen counter. He later admitted to it, police say, saying he was frustrated by the child's crying. "It is my understanding that even though they're Deaf they can pick up vibrations and hear some sounds and stuff like that," said Perlich... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Man's ‘Fantasy’ In Texas Stabbing Spree

Stabbing spree suspect in 2011 report sheds light on Dylan Quick's past.

HOUSTON, Texas -- Dylan Andrew Quick, the 20-year-old accused of stabbing 14 people on the Lone Star CyFair campus, is now on suicide watch.

On Wednesday, a court-ordered psychologist and his parents visited him in jail. According to a new report, Quick has struggled with suicidal thoughts for years. As you can seen at Prosecutors: College stabbing suspect Dylan Quick had long-held killing ‘fantasy’

More than two years ago, Quick simply vanished. His parents called Texas EquuSearch. Frank Black worked on the case.

On Tuesday, Black was watching news reports of the Lone Star College stabbings.

“They said they had him in custody and they showed pictures of him and I said that guy looks real familiar to me,” Black said. “I saw the hearing aid.”

So, Black went back through his old records. He said he “matched ‘em and said ‘that's the guy right there!’”

It was the same Dylan Quick who had been reported missing back in January of 2011. He was 18 at the time.

Black remembered friends and family saying Quick was sheltered, in part because of his impaired hearing.

“Said he’d been kinda pampered and coddled and stuff,” Black continued.

His notes recall the text Quick sent his parents: "If I continue to live at your house, I would probably commit suicide"... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Student Suspect In Texas Stabbing Spree

A Deaf student suspect in Texas college stabbings had dreams of success, bloodshed, some say.

HOUSTON, Texas -- A Deaf college student accused of going on a stabbing spree at a Texas campus attacked his victims with such force that "pieces of blade" were found in at least one of his 14 alleged victims, according to police.

Dylan Andrew Quick, 20, allegedly used a razor utility knife to stab and cut fellow students at Lone Star College Tuesday, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

"There were pieces of blade in at least one victim, broken blade pieces in the area where the cutting occurred, and the handle to a razor-type knife (X-Acto-style) was found in a backpack that Quick was carrying when he was arrested," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Quick told police he has "had fantasies of stabbing people to death" since he was 8 years old. He also indicated he had been planning the attack for "some time."

Stabbing suspect left 'Pieces of Blade' in at least one victim.

A Deaf college student suspect in Texas college stabbings had dreams of success, bloodshed, some say.

Dylan Andrew Quick overcame a childhood disability and had big plans for the future. But on Tuesday, the 20-year-old student went on a stabbing spree on his Texas college campus, authorities said.

By the time campus police took him into custody, 14 people had been injured at Lone Star College. It's unclear how many of the injured were stabbed and how many suffered other injuries. The campus shut down Tuesday, but will reopen Wednesday.

Quick landed in jail. For now, his plans for the future may be in jeopardy.

Overcoming obstacles: Quick was born Deaf and received a cochlear implant at age 7, CNN affiliate KPRC reported. An article on how he overcame challenges early in life appeared on a Lone Star student blog the first week of April. The implant gave him the ability to hear, but he had to play catch-up to learn how to speak English. His mother homeschooled him and got him involved in Lone Star's library programs, when he was a teen, according to KPRC.

Quick became a voracious reader and developed a close connection with the school northwest of Houston, where he later became a student, the affiliate said. He was planning to finish his associate's degree there and transfer to the University of Houston to study accounting. The young man dreamed of starting a book club. But Quick had also been harboring a darker... Read The Full Story.

Amy Burch is a single mother of three adopted girls Amelia, 8; Lucy, 3; and Anna, 5. Burch adopted Anna from Anyang, China, just a few weeks before her fifth birthday with the help of her parents. Debra Burch, Amy’s mother, said she and her husband Mike were with her daughter when she made the decision to adopt Anna. “We knew she was Deaf,” said Debra.

The disability didn’t hinder the family’s excitement to adopt her and figured Anna’s deafness could be treated with a hearing aid or cochlear implant. The extent of Anna’s condition was unknown until the family had her hearing assessed.

Anna was born with no cochleas, said Dr. Steven Zupancic, assistant professor of Speech-Language & Hearing Sciences at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health Sciences. The cochlea is what allows hearing, said Brittany Hall, clinical supervisor for SLHS at TTUHSC SAHS.

Anna was profoundly Deaf. Debra said cochlear implants and hearing aids would be of no use, so the family began looking into other options. She was taken to Hall for an assessment in August.

“Anna is such an amazing little girl,” Hall said. “She has no formal language of communication, but she is such a communicative little girl. … I saw her for an assessment in 2012. She was communicating, but it wasn’t through words. With the help of the family, she learned sign communication.”

Hall said before Anna’s departure to Verona, she was working to teach her Anna to pair signs with speech by reading lips... Read The Full Story.

ASL Video - The Ghost Tracks

The ghost tracks of San Antonio in American Sign Language.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Numerous of Deafies heard the stories about these railroad tracks located on Shane Road where a train struck a school bus during the 1940s and killed the bus driver and all children on the bus.

The urban legend is that a long time ago about haunted railroad tracks near San Antonio, Texas, anyhow, Deafies decided to do some investigation on their own, and to their amazement they actually found some shocking evidence.

The car did indeed go up the hill and over the tracks with the ignition turned off even. They even tried it with the car going backwards and it still worked.

They even noticed very apparent fingerprints on the trunk of the car after pouring baby powder on it and going over the tracks. They say that if you put baby powder on the back on your car the kids handprints will appear. Stacey De Laune.
