Delta Air Lines Agent Discriminating Deaf Couple

Deaf couple say squabble with Delta over lack of communication at Michigan airport.

DETROIT, Michigan -- A Deaf California couple is lashing out at Delta Air Lines, claiming one of its agents at Detroit Metro Airport refused to communicate with them in writing and instead of helping them rolled her eyes at them.

The couple said they just wanted to know if they could be seated together. Turned out, the plane was full, but the couple still had questions.

Confusion followed. Police were called. The passengers were asked to leave.

By Monday morning, the airport incident had gone viral on social media as the couple ended up being denied boarding. They wound up at an airport hotel - hurt, confused and angry.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"Whew. This is raw. I see this kind of stuff happen to many Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Deaf-Disabled people in the news. I've always listened to those stories with disbelief. ... Even though I have seen this many times, it was a huge shock when it happened to us ... The feeling of being oppressed is very traumatic," airline passenger Melissa Elmira Yingst said in a Facebook video, where she used sign language to explain what happened.

The 40-year-old Yingst, who is a TV personality in California for Tru Biz and a social activist, also took to Twitter.

"Wow. Am at @Delta airlines in Detroit. Front desk attendant Felixia refuses to communicate with us in writing and even threw away the paper she wrote on with us," Yingst tweeted.

Delta Air Lines tweeted back.

"Hi Melissa, I am so sorry to hear this. Please provide me with your confirmation number, travel dates and city pairs using the link below for further assistance. *TMU"

According to Delta, the two passengers knew in advance they weren't seated together as they had purchased their tickets separately. The airline said that the boarding gate agent at issue accommodated the two passengers in letting them know that the plane was full, and that she would work with the flight attendants to see whether someone would give up a seat so they could sit together.

Delta also said the couple was ultimately refunded their tickets and denied boarding because one of the passengers aggressively went behind the counter - which isn't permitted - and pushed the agent to get to a trash can to retrieve a note.

“Delta is in contact with two customers who reported having difficulty communicating with a gate agent prior to their flight. We are reviewing the situation with our Detroit team and will work with these customers to better understand what transpired. As always, we take situations like these seriously and we are using this as an opportunity to learn and improve” Delta Air Lines spokesman Michael Thomas said in a statement late Monday.

Meanwhile, the couple is reeling.

"This has been very traumatizing for us and we right now are currently collecting resources to figure out the best way to remedy this situation," Yingst wrote to the Free Press in an email Monday. "We booked a different flight out of Detroit with a different airline. Currently on our way to LA. Just looking forward to a hot shower tonight!"

The incident happened about 8 p.m. Sunday as Yingst and her partner, Socorro Garcia, 34, were heading back to Los Angeles after attending a 'creating-change' conference in Detroit.

According to Yingst and Garcia, who gave a detailed account of the incident on Facebook, here is what they say happened:

During check-in, a Delta agent explained to them that once they got to the departure gate, they would be given seats together.

So the couple went to departure gate A64, where, they say, they encountered an unhelpful agent named "Felicia."

The couple communicated to the agent their request to sit together through an iPhone, but the agent "kept talking to us without writing anything down."

According to Garcia, Yingst started questioning why they couldn't sit together, but the "gate agent rolled her eyes at us." After a few moments, the agent "finally wrote on a piece of paper" that the flight was full and that the couple couldn't sit together.

Garcia wanted to continue communicating and tried to write on the agent's note, but said "instead of giving us the paper we asked for, (the agent) crumbled it in front of us and threw it in the trash."

Yingst then pulled out her notepad and started documenting the incident. She said she asked the agent for her name, but that the woman refused. So she looked at her badge, wrote down "Felicia" and kept pressing the agent to work with them on paper.

Meanwhile, Garcia ventured to the trash can to retrieve the agent's note, but was pushed away by the agent.

That's when Yingst started videotaping the incident. So did the agent, who ultimately called the police and accused Garcia of assaulting her.

In the video taken by Yingst, the agent is heard telling Garcia: “You can’t come back here.” Then someone says, "You want me to call the police?" The agent says 'Yes,' waves her hand at Garcia and says, "No more. No more talking."

The couple said that when police arrived, they told them that nothing could be done about the seating arrangement and asked them to leave. They advised the couple to book another flight back to Los Angeles, they said, so they got a hotel near the airport and vented on social media.

"This really isn't about us not being able to sit together but how they handled communication and refused to provide us access to the needs we asked for," Yingst wrote.

Garcia added: "Loss for words. What did we do wrong?"

KFC Employees Mocking Deaf Couple

Deaf couple claims they were mistreated by employees at KFC.

BYRAM, MS -- A Byram woman is looking for answers after she said her mother was made fun of for being Deaf by employees at the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Byram. She said her mother and other people with disabilities shouldn't have to choose where they can go eat or be mistreated while they are there.

Bobbie Cole said she and her husband went to the KFC off Siwell Road in Byram Wednesday night. Because she's Deaf, she said they usually go inside, but the door was locked.

Cole said she attempted to order her food at the drive-thru window.

"I said excuse me I can't understand you, I'm Deaf can you move your hand so I can read your lips," said Cole. "She still stays like this."

She said them something happened, that has never happened to her before.

"Then she walks away to the boy that was cooking, he had flour all over him," Cole said. "They both were laughing. I said, 'hey, hey.' She turned around. She said, 'what?' I said, 'are y'all making fun of us?"

"It makes me upset, hurt. You don't make fun of other people who are handicapped or deaf. I can't respect that."

Cole's daughter, Donna Curtis, took to social media to express her concerns.

"No one deserves that, no one," said Curtis. "I don't care who you are, what disability you have or anything, you do not deserve to have your feelings hurt."

We reached out to KFC. In a statement, a spokesperson told us:

"We are conducting a thorough investigation of this incident. The franchisee’s director of operations is reaching out to Ms. Curtis regarding this matter. We believe in a culture of respect for all people and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind."

Passenger Punches Deaf Couple, Service Dog

Video shows airline passenger accused of punching Deaf pregnant woman, service dog being tackled at the Florida airport.

ORLANDO, Florida -- The details of an alleged punch thrown by a passenger at a Deaf pregnant woman's service dog remain up for debate, but new video shows some of the confrontation on the plane and an ensuing fight in the terminal.

Hazel Ramirez and her fiance Matt Silvay - who are both Deaf - along with their two young children and service dog were aboard a Frontier Airlines flight from Colorado Springs, Colorado to Orlando, Florida when they say a passenger punched their 8-month-old service dog, a Great Dane named Zariel.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

An Orlando Police Department report says passenger Tim Manley felt the dog was taking up too much space and irritating his wife's allergies, so he "punched it with a closed fist," causing the dog to yelp and take cover under a seat.

Silvay can be seen standing in the aisle of the plane arguing with Manley, cell phone video shows.

Manley says he considered what he did to the dog a "swat," not a punch, ABC News reports. Ramirez told Orlando CBS affiliate WKMG she and her husband were appalled by Manley's actions.

"So my husband gets mad and yelled at the man to tell him never touch any dogs or service animals," Ramirez told WKMG.

The argument then escalated from the plane and into the terminal of the Orlando International Airport where Manley is accused of punching Ramirez, who is five months pregnant, in her stomach.

New cell phone video recorded inside the terminal appears to shows Silvay shoving Manley to the ground. Silvay told police he tackled Manley in an attempt to prevent him from leaving before authorities arrived.

In the description of the video posted to YouTube, Manley provided his own account of the incident. Here's some of what he says happened:

"They had a very difficult time keeping the dog confined in front of the seat even though since no-one wanted to sit there they had two extra seats. The dog was hyper and got up into the isle while the plane was approaching the landing. Through kicking and pushing the man was able to get it back under the seats though. When the plane stopped moving naturally a lot of people stood up in the isle. I being quite groggy was reaching down in front of me into my backpack. Upon rising up I found I was staring the great dane in the face. I instinctively pushed it away immediately feeling fear and alarm. The man went berserk and accused me of punching the dog, started pushing his hand in my face and kicking me...

Read Manley's full account here.

Frontier Airlines confirmed an incident occurred on the flight.

Neither the couple nor Manley accepted medical treatment

Officers took statements and referred the case to the FBI. Ramirez says she plans to press charges.

Deaf Couple Dead In Apparent Murder-Suicide

Deaf News: Man, woman die in murder-suicide in Idaho shooting.

CALDWELL, Idaho -- Four children are without their parents following Monday’s domestic violence shooting, which was the second deadly case of domestic violence in Canyon County in the past nine weeks.

An investigation indicated that Ian S. Stone, 37, shot Jaclyn D. Zabel, 29, and then turned the gun on himself, according to a press release from Canyon County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Marv Dashiell.

“Investigators have determined the incident was a domestic violence situation which elevated to the most severe type of situation and resulted in the loss of life,” according to the sheriff’s release.

Zabel and Stone, both Deaf, and their four children practiced jiu-jitsu in northern Idaho at Bonners Ferry BJJ, according to Sam Brown, their coach and friend.

“The whole family was well liked up here and there is a lot of broken hearts,” he said. “We are all shocked and deeply saddened by what transpired on Monday.”

Zabel’s death was ruled a homicide, according to the Ada County Coroner’s Office. She was pronounced dead at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center around 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Zabel died later Tuesday night in a Boise hospital, according to the release.

The Ada County Coroner’s Office release stated both died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Stone’s last Facebook post, published 8:34 a.m. Monday, expressed turmoil over the relationship.

“Inside of me is broke,” read part of his post, just an hour before the shooting.

The relationship between Stone and Zabel has not been made clear by police.

Two months ago, Stone bid Zabel a happy anniversary on Facebook. “To my beautiful wife, Jacy Zabel,” his post read on March 28. “Want to say happy 9 years anniversary together. I love you so much with all my heart. We been through good time and bad time.”

First responders arrived at 19351 Wagner Road in Caldwell around 9:30 a.m. Monday. Children were removed from the house after the shooting, according to Dashiell. How many children were present and the names of their parents have not been released.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved in this terrible situation,” the sheriff’s office release states.

Stone was previously convicted of misdemeanor domestic battery in 2007 after pleading guilty to the charge in Bonner County, according to the Idaho online courts repository. He participated in a diversion program for the charge, according to the repository. In 2015, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disturbing the peace and destruction of a telecommunication line in Bonner County.

A Meal Train has been set up to support the Zabel family. People can donate money or provide meals.

Brown said he plans to work with the jiu-jistu members to see how else they can help the children and family members impacted by their deaths.

Two months and one day earlier from Monday’s shooting, Kymberlee Larsen, a 22-year-old mother, was killed in a domestic violence stabbing in Nampa. According to the sheriff’s office, Evan C. Bashir, 29, broke into a Nampa house and stabbed Larsen and Larsen’s sister and mother. Her sister, Chelsea Larsen, 27, and her mother, Julianna Flowers, 57, recovered from their injuries.

Bashir was shot and killed by one of two responding Nampa Police officers.

Bashir and Larsen were in a romantic relationship that had been deteriorating for some time, Canyon County Sheriff Keiran Donahue said in a press conference in March.

This month, U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, wrote an opinion piece urging the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

The Act, which was signed into law in 1994, has been reauthorized three times since. It has helped Idaho nonprofits and agencies provide life-saving services to domestic violence, dating violence and sexual assault victims.

The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence reported that in 2016 there were 6,067 incidents of intimate partner violence and 2,063 incidents of sexual assault reported to law enforcement agencies in Idaho, according to Crapo.

Deaf Couple Pleads For Return of Dog Stolen

Deaf couple pleads for return of dog stolen from in front of store.

INKSTER, Michigan -- A metro Detroit Uber driver is hoping you can help reunite her with her dog.

Megan Nairne says her dog, Bruiser, was taken while on a walk with her significant other. They had stopped at Harrison Liquor Store in Inkster, while she was working on Opening Day at Comerica Park.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The dognapping was captured on video, which Nairne posted to Facebook.

Nairne says she had just dropped a rider off near Comerica when she got word that Bruiser had been taken.

Narine says she and her significant other, James, adopted the 9-year-old Bruiser after James' mother, Linda, passed away in April 2015. Bruiser was originally Linda's dog.

Nairne says Bruiser is very attached to James and will get depressed if he is not around.

James had stopped at the store during their walk to get Bruiser a snack, and left him outside because the store does not allow pets inside.

Nairne says they have filed a police report, but do not feel their case has been given the appropriate priority.

She says she just wants to get Bruiser home.

Treatment of Deaf Couple at Wendy’s Drive Thru

Treatment of Deaf couple at Wendy's sparks outrage in Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas -- A local Deaf couple recently visited the Wendy's at 305 West Slaughter Lane in South Austin for food. They handed a note to the employee with their order at the window. But instead of immediately getting the fries and burgers they requested, they got a handwritten message.

They say an employee handed it to them after the fast food restaurant didn't get their order right.

The couple feels they were mistreated while trying to use the drive-thru.

Elisa Vita said the message left a bad taste in her mouth.

"They gave me the note and I felt very upset about that. I felt like they looked at me as less than other people, as inferior to other people and it was really not a good feeling,” said Vita.

Vita posted an image of the message on Facebook.

"It really hit a nerve with people," said Vita.

Thousands have weighed in online sharing similar experiences at fast food restaurants nationwide. Vita said she spoke with the manager of the South Austin Wendy's who gave her some free meal coupons and was incredibly apologetic about the situation.

She doesn't feel like enough was done to make it right.

"I deserve the right to the same service and obviously Wendy's needs to provide more in-depth training that explicitly says everyone deserves to access the drive-thru," said Vita.

A University of Texas professor said fast food worker or not, it's best to just follow a Deaf person's lead when they're trying to communicate with you.

"They [Deaf People] are skilled at working with and interacting with people with whom they don't share a common language. Try not to become frustrated if you're the clerk," said Richard Meier, the Department of Linguistics chair at UT.

Accessibility issues for the Deaf expand far beyond the drive-thru. Faculty within UT's ASL Program are beginning to research them further.

"One problem is there may not be interpreters readily available or the interpreter may be available through a video link," said Meier. "So our question is, how well is this working?"

Meier and his colleagues plan on specifically looking at healthcare first. With such a large Deaf community based in Austin, many believe it's the perfect place to conduct such research. Many say there can never be too much emphasis placed on improving accessibility as it benefits everyone, not just the Deaf.

Elderly Deaf Couple Recovering After Brutal Home Invasion

Three Memphis men were arrested and charged with a home invasion in the Wesson Height subdivision in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

OLIVE BRANCH, MS -- WREG: A couple was terrorized, beaten and robbed. The couple said it was God that helped get them through.

Through sign language and translation help from their son, Diann and Jimmy Kelley said they were in their kitchen when three men Charles Gayles, Jeffrey Richardson, and Charlonte Smith broke through a back bedroom window, entered their home, shut the lights off and attacked them.

Diann Kelley, 68, said the men flipped over the kitchen table, tied her up with duct tape over her mouth, wrists, and ankles, and beat her husband over and over with the ends of their rifles.

Related: Elderly Deaf Couple Had Been Dead Inside Home

"He says they just kept beating him with the guns. He can’t count how many times they hit him," the Kelley's son, Kevin, said through translation. "His hands are all swollen they hit his hands because he was trying to cover his head. They broke that finger. They broke his ribs."

When the men left with duffle bags worth of their belongings, Diann was able to rip the tape off her mouth, find a knife to cut the tape from her ankles, and run for help.

Jimmy is now back at home after suffering two broken ribs, an ear that had to be stitched back together, and gashes in his head.

"She has no idea why,” Kevin said. “Maybe because they are Deaf, they are taking advantage of them not being able to hear. They weren't satisfied the first time with what they were able to get out?"

This wasn’t the first time the couple was targeted. Earlier in July, the couple said the same men entered through their garage door, but Jimmy was able to reach for a gun and start shooting, which caused the men to run.

Multiple police agencies searched for the men after Diann got help. One of the men was found in the attic and another was found several houses down. Diann said the man in the attic actually fell through the ceiling, and that is how officers found him.

"She said, ‘why should she let three boys win over her and scare her?’ She's not going to allow it,” Kevin said.

The family said thanks to prayers, they are making it through.

Singapore Woman Insults Deaf Cleaner

Deaf News: Singapore woman at Jem foodcourt insults Deaf cleaner who mistakenly cleared her plate of food.

SINGAPORE -- A Facebook user Dave Teo commented in the Facebook link of our story, ‘RC denies affiliation with woman who berated dumb cleaner at JEM but FB shows she was an active RC participant’, about the bad experience he had with the woman who berated the Deaf cleaner at JEM and her husband.

He identified the couple and said that they go around show flat and place 5 percent deposit, and after the ‘closing’ ask the agent to treat them for dinner. He said that they took him to a restaurant and ordered food which cost him a few hundred dollars. The cheque the couple issued however, eventually bounced.

Several others who commented on Dave’s comment suggested that the woman and her husband would do anything to score a free meal.

Another Facebook user who identified himself as a property agent described the couple as ‘phony buyers”. He asked fellow agents to beware of the couple saying they bought from “PropNex and Huttons agents ranging from 2-4 units as bulk purchases,” but that all their cheques from various banks bounced.

He identified the couple as Alice and Chong Meng Chew. This Facebook user also released their personal details like address and phone numbers. He advised other agents to demand only Cashier’s Order from the couple if they ever come forward to buy any realty in the future.

“I apologise for the behaviour but I was having a bad cold that day, and I didn’t know that the cleaner was deaf and mute,” Fong told Chinese newspaper Shin Min today (5 Jun). In the video shared by Euphemia Lee of the incident however, Fong was heard implying, “he is old, he is Deaf and he is dumb, so? I must give in to him? I don’t understand!”

Fong told the Chinese newspaper earlier today that she had taken half-day off from work on that day as she was feeling unwell. She had also noticed “something dirty” in the food she had finished eating, and wanted to take a picture of it to complain. That was the moment when the 64-year-old cleaner came to clear her plate.

Fong said that she tried to tell him “no”, but the cleaner “would not listen”.

Elderly Deaf Couple Had Been Dead Inside Home

Deaf News: An elderly couple had been dead inside their Ohio home for weeks before police found them last Thursday.

MADISONVILLE, OH -- A couple had been dead inside their Madisonville home for weeks before authorities discovered their bodies Thursday, according to Cincinnati Police.

Spokesperson Tiffaney Hardy said the couple accidentally left their vehicle running in the garage on Bramble Avenue, near Edith Avenue. Both were Deaf and likely didn’t hear the engine, Hardy said.

Initial reports indicate they died as a result of asphyxiation from the fumes.

The bodies were discovered when someone went to check on the couple after not hearing from them for several weeks.

"They are frequent church goers and had not been seen by other church members as well as community members became concerned about not having seen them," family friend James Jawarek told FOX19 NOW.

Jawarek identified the couple as Wayne Flammer and Joan Flammer.

The family of the victims gathered around the home and were in shock that this could happen. Jawarek described the couple as good Christians.

"Very friendly," Jawarek said. "They got along with people."

Deaf Husband Finds Out Wife Is Pregnant

Viral video of Deaf husband find out he's going to be a dad will melt you.

Get ready for your heart to turn into a puddle. Brittany LeBlanc Welch recently shared a video of her husband, David, who is Deaf, finding out that she's pregnant. Of all the pregnancy reveal videos I've ever seen, this one definitely ranks near the top in terms of sheer emotional impact.

Welch said she recorded the video back in October. "I was a few weeks pregnant and found out earlier that day," she said. Watch original video with closed captioning: https://youtu.be/lMqjpnre0U8

First, he opens up some rather puzzling gifts including a "Baby" Ruth bar and "Dad's" Old Fashioned Root Beer (get it?). Then at the very end, he gets two positive pregnancy tests. Make sure you have all the tissues handy because once you see his emotional reaction, you're going to need them.

Deaf Couple Had Their Baby Officially Registered With A Sign Name

Deaf baby becomes first person in Britain to have her sign language name that means smiley face legally recorded on her birth certificate.

LONDON, United Kingdom -- A Deaf couple have become the first people in Britain to record their baby's name in sign language on her birth certificate.

Theatre director Paula Garfield, 47, and her partner Tomato Lichy, 39, from Wembley, north London, wanted to record Hazel's name in British Sign Language (BSL), but said they were initially told by their local Brent Register Office that it was impossible.

Now their personal name for four-year-old Hazel, a reference to her smiling face, has pride of place on her birth certificate - as UbOtDDstarL.

Hazel's sign name, like many others, is not simply the letters H-A-Z-E-L spelt out.

Instead it is a made-up combination of symbols which, when taken in context, describes her personality in a way only her parents and friends can fully understand.

Hazel's sign name is written as UbOtDDstarL, which represents a combination of hand movements.

The U represents the chin, bO means a 'baby O' made with the thumb and forefinger, tD means 'hands facing the signer', Dstar means 'the handshape opens' and L shows the shape of the hand.

Put that together and it makes a small O shape held at the chin, which then opens into an L shape.

Ms Garfield told MailOnline she had a battle of up to nine months with the Register Office. The issue was finally sorted around four years ago, but the case has had little publicity.

'My daughter's sign name is what it is because her first expression was a smile,' she said. 'There's no way to translate it perfectly into English.

'But we went to the register office and they said it was "ridiculous, you can't register a sign name, don't be silly". So we got in touch with a solicitor, who said the law allows people to have their name on a birth certificate "in their own language".'... Read The Full Story.

SWAT standoff with Deaf man in Grand Prairie ends peacefully.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- A standoff with police ended peacefully Monday morning when a man upset about his girlfriend's arrest surrendered after threatening to kill himself.

According to Grand Prairie police spokesperson Lyle Gensler, police responded to a domestic situation at the Sugar Creek Apartments in the 900 block of Duncan Perry just after midnight Monday and found a man and a woman - both legally Deaf - involved in a dispute outside their apartment.

Police determined the woman was intoxicated, and she was arrested for public intoxication.

The arrest upset her boyfriend, who called 911 using Texas Relay, a service that provides telephone access for people with speech or hearing loss. He indicated he had a gun and told dispatchers he wanted his girlfriend to be released from custody or he'd kill himself.

"He has a computer in there that he can talk to via Skype and talk to a live person, and that person can relay to us what he's signing," an officer explained during the standoff. "And that's only if he wants to talk to us.

We've talked to him a couple of times, we've explained to him what's going on, but he still seems unhappy with the whole situation"... Read The Full Story.

FORT PIERCE, Florida -- The Florida Highway Patrol has identified a person of interest in the fatal hit-and-run crash that left two young people dead Monday evening on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 166 in Fort Pierce.

Robert Bates, a 68-year-old resident of Sanford, Florida, was identified as a person of interest in the accident that killed 19-year-old Mariah A. King and 24-year-old Vincent T. Mathews as they attempted to change a tire on their PT Cruiser around 8 p.m., according to Sgt. Mark Wysocky, spokesman for FHP.

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier Tuesday morning FHP investigators traveled to Orlando to question a suspect in the fatal hit-and-run wreck. They told WPTV that they had spoken with the suspect and had recovered the rig.

However, Tuesday evening FHP said in a media release that investigators did not find the person of interest at home and had not recovered the 2006 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer believed to have been involved in the fatal accident. Investigators did speak with representatives of Mercer Transport of Louisville, Ky., the registered owner of the semi, regarding the investigation and said company officials were cooperating.

WPTV reached out to family members of both victims but they declined to comment. However, they said they were devastated. One family member did confirm the two were visiting friends further south and were on their way back home to Lakeland. FHP investigators called the site tragic.

"Anytime you're attempting to change your tire and a car veered off the road and hit the people…it's going to be a tragic site," said Sgt. Wysocky. Both victims are former students of the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind... Read The Full Story.
