Deaf Girl Receives Doll Who Wears Hearing Aids

This is the adorable moment a Deaf five year old girl received a doll just like her with hearing aids.

SYDNEY -- Abbi Keating, from New South Wales, Australia, lost her hearing at two years old - something that baffled doctors as she also stopped talking.

Her mum, Amy, 31, was devastated but quickly ensured her daughter was fitted with hearing aids and later underwent an operation to have a cochlear implant fitted - an electronic device that replaces the function of the ear.

Abbi longed for a doll just like her and spent hours drawing hearing devices onto her dolls with pen.

Deaf Baby Hears Mother's Voice For First Time

WATCH: Deaf Idaho baby hears her mother's voice for the first time.

BOISE, ID -- This is the heart-warming moment a Deaf baby heard her mother's voice for the very first time.

Born profoundly Deaf, Annabelle Lawrence received two hearing aids on Wednesday and when they were turned on she couldn't hide her excitement.

When her mother Sarah Jo asked her if she could hear, the three-month-old broke into a massive gummy smile

Sarah Jo, from Boise, Idaho then asked again and Annabelle's eyes opened wide as she realized she was listening to her mother speak.

Sarah Jo said: 'Everything has been so overwhelming. 'To be able to tell Annabelle that I love her and know she hears me is very emotional. 'You could see how excited she was to be able to hear. I can't stop talking to her.

'Whenever I'm doing the dishes or putting a wash on I give her a running commentary. 'I want her to be able to catch up on the last three months.'

The video also shows the audiologist from Idaho Elks Hearing and Balance Center, Boise, continuing with tests to determine to what level Annabelle's hearing is working. When she heard clapping, she started to look a little perplexed and turned her head a full 90 degrees searching for the origins.

Annabelle's hearing aids are temporary as she will have cochlear implants put in when she is nine months old. Her current hearing aids enable her to hear sufficiently as the auditory nerve in her brain is functioning perfectly.

Sarah Jo added: 'At the moment she is really tired.

'I think hearing for the first time means her brain is working extra hard to understand what is happening. 'She is napping much longer than she did before to recuperate. 'But when she's awake she is so much more excited.'

Bullied Deaf Boy Forced To Leave School

Son James was mercilessly picked on in the playground because he has a hearing impairment at mainstreaming school.

DUNDEE, UK -- The Sunday Post: Chris said teachers did little to tackle the problem when James was subjected to name-calling by other pupils.

Eventually, Chris and wife Samantha were forced to take the step of removing him from the school due to the “lack of understanding from teachers”.

“People are ignorant – that’s not going to change,” said the former striker, who has tried to teach his son how to deal with the name-calling.

He said: “It is wrong for children to tease and bully but it happens through school and as much as we’d like it to, it will probably never be eradicated.

“I prepare James for this. What I couldn’t understand was the lack of understanding from his teachers at his previous school.

“They did not know how to treat him because of his hearing aids.”

Following abuse at the hands of other children, Chris was forced to carefully explain to James that he was happy with him just the way he his.

“You find out who your friends are,” is the difficult advice he gave him.“Kids have to work things out for themselves,” he added.

Since placing James in another school, he has flourished and is now an accomplished hockey player, much to his dad’s delight.

Chris said: “Going to his new school totally transformed him as a person.

“He was depressed and lacked self-belief and it was because of the common sense and logical understanding of the teachers at his new school that he began to build his confidence.”

The now 14-year-old’s early life was beset by problems.

James was born prematurely at 28 weeks in September

2001 at The Queen Mother’s Hospital in Glasgow, weighing just 3lb.

He was so tiny, Chris could hold him in the palm of his hand.

After weeks of specialist care, he was eventually allowed to go home.

However, Samantha rushed James to the former Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow 10 days later when he fell seriously ill with a respiratory virus.

He was choking and having terrifying episodes where he would stop breathing.

She took him to hospital but while in the waiting room he stopped breathing again.

He was rushed to a side room where doctors resuscitated him. Medics said he could have died if he hadn’t got there when he did.

Chris, 43, said: “My wife had this feeling and she turned round and James was going blue.

“They rushed him into the hospital and he had gone. They got him back.

“He was in a long time. They resuscitated him. He was a tiny baby. It was the most worrying thing that has ever happened.

“Had we lived any further away we might not have got there in time. Another minute and he might not have been here. We were told that.”

Doctors said James was suffering from RSV – a common virus with cold-like symptoms.

Healthy children tend to shrug it off, but it can be life-threatening for premature babies.

The star was in Spain at the time preparing for a crucial UEFA Cup tie with Valencia when Samantha called to say James was fighting for his life.

He immediately tried to get a flight home, but couldn’t.

In the end he chose not to go to the match but instead stayed at the hotel where Samantha could call to give him updates.

He flew home early next day and went to the intensive care ward where he and Samantha kept a bedside vigil.

The footballer said it was the most worrying time of his life.

“James was on life support. It was touch-and-go,” he revealed.

“You hope, you sit and pray and think about things.

Mainstream School Lacks Communication Access

According to the researchers, the cascading impact of hearing loss on access to school communication.

Fragmented Hearing, Effort, Listening, Comprehension, Fatigue and Pace of Learning. Hearing Loss is invisible. Someone observing a student with hearing loss may believe that he or she has an attention problem or a learning disability as hearing loss can also impact perceiving, language processing, processing speed, memory and attention. Unlike ADHD or LD, learning issues caused by hearing loss are not due to a disorder (an issue with brain processes). Instead the learning issues are secondary to delays because the child has incomplete access to speech occurring around him or her, especially soft speech or completely understanding someone talking from a distance further than 3-6 feet.

Fragmented Hearing: Our educational system is based on the assumption that students in the classroom will perceive, and therefore understand, all of what the teacher is saying. When much information received in school is fragmented because of hearing loss, learning consequences are likely. Even with the latest hearing technology, normal hearing ability is not restored by hearing devices. Even aided thresholds of 20 dB HL will cause soft speech, high pitch speech sounds and unemphasized brief words to be undetected or too quiet to process.

It is not unusual for children with hearing loss to have a 20% ‘listening gap’ as compared to class peers who may miss only 5% of information 1. The image shows a story about Fran the frog who has a sore throat. As you can see, comprehending the meaning of the story is impacted when 20% of the information missing. Even if a child is able to perform well in a quiet setting using hearing devices, a classroom setting is typically noisy, with fast-paced peer-to-peer conversations and teachers that move about the classroom, causing significant listening challenges. These conditions typically result in barriers to access.

Increased Effort: Effort refers to the exertion of physical or mental power. Listening effort refers to the attention necessary to understand speech. Ease of listening is the perceive difficulty of the listening situation by the listener. Even low noise in the environment will interact with the fragmented hearing to interfere with their speech understanding. Children with hearing loss work harder than their peers to listen leaving fewer cognitive resources to understand speech in the classroom as compared to class peers.

CSS Movies presents "Alone In A Hearing World" shows true to life scenarios of a young Deaf boy growing up in a hearing world. With family members who can't communicate and continuous misunderstandings by his teachers and coaches, he is forced to live in a world of isolation. However, when he pleas for his Mothers understanding and falls short, he ends up in the only place he seems to find acceptance.

It has been assumed that speechreading will help children to compensate for what is missed due to fragmented hearing. Research results make it clear that speechreading (lipreading) help children to compensate for what was missed...read more: http://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/pdf.

Alexander Graham Bell - Theft Of The Century

Alexander Graham Bell of history's most famous inventor, but shockingly his most famous invention was stolen.

WASHINGTON DC -- If you answered Alexander Graham Bell, then you, along with millions of people around the world have been misinformed. In 2002, even the US Congress succumbed to the nagging truth and “changed its mind” on the issue, according credit to the real inventor and declaring that the original telephone was in fact invented by Antonio Meucci, a penniless Italian who did not speak a word of English and could not afford to patent his discovery.

Alexander Graham Bell? He was just a successful patent applicant and some would say, THIEF.

According to the US Congress, Bell was a cunning opportunist who took all the credit for a more brilliant scientist’s work. The House of Representatives voted to recognise mechanical genius Antonio Meucci as the father of modern communications, following a protracted battle by historians and Italian Americans.

From Monopoly to the lightbulb, AllTime10s brings you 10 famous inventions stolen from other people.
To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

The real invented of the telephone, Meucci, born April 13, 1808, had been working in Cuba in the 1830s, developing methods for treating illnesses using electric shocks, when he discovered the ability of sound to travel through electrical impulses. He later moved to Staten Island to follow up on his discovery. In 1860 which was 16 years before Bell claimed to have invented the telephone Meucci demonstrated his teletrofono in New York, but could not afford the $250 required to register a patent.

Bell, who took an interest in Meucci’s invention, convinced him to share his research material. They shared a lab together and Bell had full access to Meucci’s materials. Bell made good and clever use of Meucci before coming up with his own “invention” and applying for a patent in his own name. Meucci duly protested, but lacking connections, was unable to convince anyone that Alexander Graham Bell had stolen his ideas. Under general patent laws, then and today, Bell should have credited Meucci and agreed to share royalties with him.

Beset with debt, Meucci could not afford the $10 fee for maintaining the patent caveat and temporarily gave up pursuit of Bell in 1874. Two years later, Bell, uncontested by Meucci, was granted ownership of the patent. Interestingly, another contender, Elisha Gray, had also submitted a patent for the telephone some hours before Bell, but due to a technicality, Bell was the registrant whose application won.

Meucci finally decided to sue Bell, charging him with fraud in the Supreme Court. The case looked rather promising for Meucci, but unfortunately, before any proceedings could begin, Meucci died on October 18, 1889.

In 2001, the United States Congress took the extraordinary decision of doing justice to Meucci, passing a resolution officially according recognition to Meucci as the real inventor of the telephone, stating that “if Meucci had been able to pay the caveat after 1874, no patent could have been issued to Bell.” The US Congress further stated that given all the facts of the patent disputes between Gray and Bell, under no terms should Alexander Graham Bell have been awarded the patent for the telephone by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1876. Alexander Graham Bell was posthumously stripped of his dubious honor as the inventor of the telephone.

“Justice” was finally served - well, sort of.

In effect, the Congressional resolution served only as a declaration and did not technically annul or modify the patent which Bell received in 1876. The resolution was also subsequently followed by another legislative declaration upholding Bell’s priority and his status as the inventor (patent holder) of the telephone.

Credit where credit is due:

Both Antonio Meucci and Elisha Gray should be credited with successfully inventing telephones in the United States before Alexander Graham Bell did so in 1876. Others who performed pioneering experimental work with electrical voice transmissions over wires included Thomas Edison, Innocenzo Manzetti, Charles Bourseul and Johann Philipp Reis. The telephone as we know it today, is largely based on improvements made by Thomas Edison on the original design which was not Bell’s but Meucci’s. SOURCE

Student Uses Hearing Loss To Motivate Others

Deaf News: A Scott County college student who was born Deaf is achieving things others thought were impossible.

KNOXVILLE, TN -- After two surgeries that allowed her to hear and speak, for the first time she is hoping all of her accomplishments will show people hearing loss doesn’t have to hold anyone back.

WATE 6 On Your Side spoke with the student and her mom about the hearing implants that changed her life.

Before she had implant surgery, she tried to use hearing aids because if we could get benefit from that then would’ve been wonderful but unfortunately the hearing aids just didn’t work for her,” said Melissa Roberts Cheyenne’s Mother.

18-year-old Cheyenne Roberts received her first cochlear implant from Advance Bionics at just 15-months-old, and her second when she was 12. Afterwards, she had to learn how to hear and speak for the very first time.

“I was a cheerleader and I was able to hear everybody else cheer and hear what was going on at the game so cochlear implants just really helped me,” said Cheyenne Roberts... Read The Full Story.

Cochlear Controversy Dramatized In ‘Sound’

Deaf News: The world-premiere play “Sound” explores the controversy over cochlear implants for the Deaf.

To hear? To speak? To sign? Those are the questions.

Deaf children in America are eligible for a procedure that can significantly expand their ability to hear. It is a cochlear implant, and rather than amplify sounds like hearing aids do, it works by directly stimulating the auditory nerve in the brain.

By 2012, about 96,000 adults and children in the U.S. alone had undergone the procedure.

Yet while many have hailed it as a breakthrough that not only can turn up the volume but also help Deaf children develop speech, not everyone is cheering.

“There are a lot of emotional feelings about CIs (cochlear implants) in the Deaf community,” explained Howie Seago, a Deaf Tacoma-bred theater artist and co-director of the new play “Sound,” which debuts this week at ACT Theatre.

“Many Deaf people feel that the doctors and other ‘professionals’ in the field of deafness consider us ‘defective’ and need to be fixed,” Seago commented by email.

“They stress this ad nauseam to the parents and do not fully educate them as to the range of communications options available. They almost always leave out the benefits of using sign language with their Deaf child.”

The conflict over whether children in particular need the device intrigued Seago’s co-director, Desdemona Chiang, when she read an early draft of hearing playwright Don Nguyen’s drama, “Sound.” It portrays the heated dispute between a Deaf father and his non-Deaf ex-wife over whether to try to restore their daughter’s hearing with CIs... What It's Like To Be A Deaf Novelist

‘Sometimes I turn off my hearing aids and dip below the surface of the sound.’ Sara Nović explains the challenges of being a Deaf author and why deafness is still used as a synonym for stupidity.

Sara Nović's first novel has recently become an audiobook to which I will not listen. The characters have been assigned voices and accents and inflections that I’ll never hear. This is not a complaint, exactly; to have written a book that someone wants to publish in any and all formats is a writer’s dream. But to hold some disc or drive that contains a thing I made, transformed into a new thing I can no longer understand, is a predicament in which few writers find themselves.

This disconnect will appear with increasing frequency as I embark on a series of literary events following the launch of my novel. As an audience member I have been to my share of readings in New York. I go because I am in love with books; I go to be with my friends. But even as a spectator they require a lot of concentration, and sometimes when I’ve worked myself into a cross-eyed headache I turn off my hearing aids and dip below the surface of the sound, let myself drift in the quiet. At my own events I won’t have the choice to opt out.

So far I have read in public only three times, each distressing in the regular ways (an audience!), with the added terror of exposing an increasingly unknowable part of myself – my voice. I can feel my words in my chest and mouth, but can’t be sure of what they sound like out in the world. As far as I’m concerned my voice has no echo; it does not stick to the tape recording. What does it mean to perform for an audience with such limited control of your output?

Books have always provided me with a sense of solace and companionship when I found the hearing world overwhelming. Growing up I filled notebooks with the things I was afraid to say aloud. Libraries, too, seem designed for me – a place where one isn’t supposed to talk, equality under the rule of silence...

Deaf Lifestyle - Oralism Versus Manualism

Isolating Deaf youngsters from the Deaf community might not be in their best interests in the United Kingdom.

States of the art hearing aids and cochlear implants might not translate to mainstream achievements.

Born into a hearing family and brought up in mainstream education, neither my parents or the teachers for the deaf, had any knowledge of the local Deaf community. In fact, in the same way that my ‘teacher for the deaf’ discouraged me from learning sign language, in many respects I was also advised not to have anything to do with the Deaf community.

Being strong willed and recognising that I was different to other children in the school (lots of them made sure I knew that), I went on to make my own mind up about what was best for me, my decisions differing markedly from what the ‘teacher of the deaf’ and social worker for the deaf, had suggested was in my best interest. Right or wrong, they were my decisions, and my life has been enriched by being involved in a wide range of Deaf community groups and activities ever since.

Because of my links to and involvement in the Deaf community, I have developed my own identity in life, I have friends who understand the issues I face every day, who support me, and I have people who share the passion I have for reaching a stage when society concentrates on what we can do, rather than the simple fact we cannot hear and might not be able to talk.

Being a part of the Deaf community, I learned all about Deaf sport and Deaf activities, and getting involved has meant that I have travelled all over the United Kingdom and internationally to take part in sport. Through these travels I have learned about Deaf life in other countries and had the chance to meet people who greet me as a long lost friend when we meet up again.

It’s not all chocolates and roses of course, as people face a wide range of issues and Deaf Club or a Deaf social event is a good place to seek help and advice about how to tackle that. Overwhelmingly though, having a Deaf identity and being a part of a Deaf community has been a huge positive in my life, adding great value, and helping me make sense of many of the problems and barriers I experience in my life. I knew and still know today, that those problems and barriers are not personal attacks on me... Read The Full Story.

Deaf Seahawks Inspires Young Deaf Twins

FLANDERS, New Jersey -- Nine-year-old twins Riley and Erin Kovalcik were born with a genetic condition that left them partially Deaf. Last week, they saw a TV commercial featuring the Seattle Seahawks’ Derrick Coleman.

The Seattle Seahawks' Derrick Coleman makes fans' dream come true with tickets to the Super Bowl.

"I thought it was very touching because I didn’t think there was any athlete that actually could play that could be exactly hearing impaired like me and Erin," Riley says. "Like, I mean, seriously!"

"I saw the Duracell battery commercial. I remembered him saying he was bullied, and I was like, 'What? How is he a football player? I mean, he's really strong, but how does he let them bully him?'" Erin says.

Riley herself was picked on in school and was told not to play sports - a warning she ignored. After the Seahawks won last weekend, Riley picked up a pencil.

"Dear my inspiration Derrick Coleman," she says, reading her letter. "I know how you feel. I also have hearing aids. Just try your best. I have faith in you."

Their father Jake tweeted a picture of the letter, hoping Coleman would see it.

"I just wanted him to know how much he's doing for Deaf kids and little kids and all kids with disabilities," Jake says. "It doesn’t matter that you're deaf. It doesn't matter that you may have some other disability. You can be exceptional too."

That night, the Seahawks re-tweeted the letter. It's been shared and re-tweeted 2,700 times... Read The Full Story.

Just who I am I'm not gonna let Dan Marino come here and tell me made me who I am today Coleman. Life story making in the unlikely star of this Duracell battery commercial that's gone by.

It couldn't be done. That I was a lost cause. The chilling and inspirational is no story it's Coleman's life. He gave up until early on his hearing aids were a problem they just didn't fit or work right inside his helmet until his mother had an idea. So a pair of pantyhose position and I kept them respect the hearing aid. I needed to help him.

Achieve his dream - He taught himself to lip-reading to get something he relies on during games if you weren't wearing your hearing aids and what what I sound like right now. I know you've talked it. But who basically all mobile from me he spends his free time visiting schools spreading the message that no one is perfect and no matter what the challenge.

Deaf NFL Player Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks

Interview with the NFL's Derrick Coleman of the Seattle Seahawks.

SEATTLE, Washington -- A television commercial starring Seattle Seahawk’s fullback Derrick Coleman is the latest Internet sensation. Coleman is the only athlete in NFL history to play offense, despite the fact he is legally Deaf.

Now, he’s getting ready to break one more barrier - the Super Bowl.

When the Seahawks take on the San Francisco 49ers, no one will be paying better attention than Coleman. “I have to be aware,” he told CBS News’ Bill Whitaker. “I have to be focused more than everybody else.”

Diagnosed with profound hearing loss, Coleman relies on lip-reading and his own unique way of communicating with the quarterback.

"He knows to look at me if he makes an audible at the line of scrimmage,” said Coleman. “He knows just tell everybody and just turn back at me one more time and he'll tell me the play." It's the way he's always played the game.

When the world tells you "no", you have two options: You can roll over and quit or you can trust your power. Derrick Coleman, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, trusted the power within. Although he's Deaf, he never let adversity stand in his way, on his road to the NFL. Share to inspire others to trust their power within and achieve their dreams. #TrustYourPower.

He told Whitaker that he’s “capable of doing what everybody else can do,” despite his hearing loss. “You can't use your problem as an excuse,” he said. “Because you use an excuse, you're not going to get to your dream. “

He was taught that philosophy at an early age. To really know Coleman’s story you have to meet the parents, his mother, May Hamlin and father, Derrick Coleman, Sr. "You feel that uncertainty, that fear as a fear as a parent, you know, that, is my child going to be OK," said Coleman, Sr.. His mother told Whitaker that Coleman was “definitely teased, he was bullied” and kids would call him “four-ears."

“My mom always said people who make fun of you and are trying bring you down - they're already down. They're trying to bring you to their level,” said Coleman.

These days Coleman wears a skullcap to keep his hearing aids in place under his helmet, but as a kid, he had to improvise... Read The Full Story:

Deaf People With Mental Illness Need Treatment

Deaf people with mental illness need culturally sensitive treatment.

Medical practitioners need to provide culturally sensitive treatment to members of the Deaf community with psychiatric disorders to ensure they are diagnosed correctly and receive appropriate treatment, says Wolters Kluwer Health.

The report was published in the March Journal of Psychiatric Practice. The authors reviewed the limited research literature available about the mental health care of Deaf patients who communicate via American Sign Language (ASL) or gestures.

Communication strategies: Communication is challenging for Deaf people who communicate in sign language or in gestures.

"Deaf individuals comprise a cultural and linguistic minority group within the United States, and culturally and linguistically appropriate psychiatric treatment must reflect these differences," according to Sarah A. Landsberger, PhD, and coauthors of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis.

There are approximately 1.2 Americans with profound hearing loss. Some Deaf people are unable to hear most sounds, even with assistive listening devices such as hearing aids. Some Deaf people identify themselves as part of the Deaf community, with a unique language sign and culture.

Sign language is complex and complete with its own syntax, grammar and vocabulary. These Deaf people do not think of their hearing loss as a disability...

Movie Trailer: 'Billy Was A Deaf Kid'

'Billy Was A Deaf Kid' - The classic, I hate your guts, no wait, I like you, my brother is DEAF, let's ride a couch down the street, love story.

Billy is Archie's brother. Archie loves Billy. Billy is Deaf. Archie finds a toy microphone to cure Billy's deafness. Sophie thinks it's stupid. Sophie is Archie's girlfriend. Archie loves Sophie. Sophie isn't quite sure about Archie. Archie, Billy and Sophie find that the world is much more complicated than simple sentences.

Can relationships rely solely on riding couches through automatic carwashes? Is a toy microphone the cure to deafness? And which is worse, getting slapped or getting spit on? These turn out to be very important questions in the lives of Archie, Sophie and Billy. And finding the answers come at a high price.

If all else fails, duct tape a toy microphone to your head. Billy Was a Deaf Kid has played at a handful of great festivals.

AG Bell & Cochlear Implant Companies

Deaf Advocates responses on issue of the AG Bell & Cochlear Implant Companies in America.

Deaf Advocates responses on issue of the Advanced Bionics and Cochlear Americas are featured on the AG Bell Association front page as being their Circle Alliance. Cochlear Americas was in the news yesterday as the Dept of Justice announced it has been found guilty of kickbacks and must pay $880,000.

Blog has past quotes from Advanced Bionics and Cochlear Americas explaining what their role in AG Bell Association's Circle Alliance has been. A plea to AG Bell Association to reconsider who it keeps company with.

Dept of Justice announcement of the settlement against Cochlear Americas: http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2010/June/10-civ-673.html.

Notice of the suits against Advanced Bionics: http://weitzlux.com/failed-cochlearimplants.html.

In March I had vlogged about Advanced Bionics being the top banner on the AG Bell Homepage. Advanced Bionics had been sued by a law firm which has a Deaf lawyer who has a CI but was representing cases of Deaf adults and children who had gotten shocks and other adverse reactions to failed CIs manufactured by Advanced Bionics due to moisture leaks and faulty CIs.

Since that time AG Bell has removed Advanced Bionics from its top banner. Great news. Perhaps the cochlear implant is only for the MONEY as the dirty business? as seen on Cochlear Business Is Dirty Business with captioned.
