Jehovah's Witnesses Targeting Deaf People

Why are annoying Jehovah's Witnesses door knockers so disrespectful to Deaf people, the community around the globe.

This blog actually get the public's attention as the Jehovah's Witnesses door knockers has gone viral on social media platform in the Deaf and HoH community.

Deaf people should be aware and educated about the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Their method of proselytism involves a door-to-door Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW) tactic which is really annoying. The rest of sign language JW's behaviour also follows similar patterns. JW are so awkward with little to no unawareness of social cues. If you confront them, they get all defensive and act all innocent. There's no middle ground with them. But why? The totalitarian, hierarchical structure of their organization is attractive to the socially inept as targeting the Deaf community.

Practitioners of a particular religion probably spend most of their time with each other, so the way they treat each other is an indication of how they treat others. When a leader (governing body members) can tell his followers what he can do without being questioned, he tends to lack empathy due to lack of feedback. The followers also lack empathy since they mirror the behaviour of their leader.

A former Jehovah Witness, who is a Child of Deaf Adult (CODA) brief story and explain why Jehovah’s Witnesses recruiting the Deaf in ASL on YouTube.

Here's an explanation: Why Jehovah’s Witnesses Recruiting The Deaf?

Jehovah's Witnesses are indoctrinated with the idea that everyone who is not part of the religion is going to be destroyed in Armageddon. They believe that this will happen any moment. To them, you are as good as dead already.

However, Deaf people have not heard of Jehovah's Witnesses actually destroying property. The Deaf association would advise you to call the authorities. Police involvement and any kind of negative publicity may get them away from your door permanently. The "elders" in their congregation will not want any further incidents that will reflect badly on Jehovah's Witnesses corporation.

Otherwise, the Jehovah's Witnesses door knockers are still so stubborn and disrespectful to Deaf people's will.

The Deaf community have to do something with the annoying Jehovah's Witnesses door knockers such as to set up the petition, or contact the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), the Canadian Association of the Deaf (CAD), the association of the Deaf in your local area to complaint as a file the statement of claim for a class-action lawsuit against the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Barbara Anderson a former Jehovah’s Witnesses Watchtower secretary tell everything about JW's dark secret: Jehovah’s Witnesses Recruiting The Deaf.

Barbara Anderson was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses from 1954 through 1997. She worked at Watchtower’s headquarters in Brooklyn, NY, from 1982 to 1992 where during her last four years there, she researched the movement’s official history (published in 1993) and did research as well as wrote a number of articles for their Awake! magazine. While working in the organization’s Writing Department, Barbara discovered that the Watchtower organization covered up child sexual molestation committed by Jehovah’s Witnesses. Rather than becoming discouraged over this discovery, she became a champion for change. This issue caused her to exit the religion and eventually become an outspoken critic of Jehovah’s Witnesses’ sexual abuse policies that she’s extensively researched: Barbara Anderson's Watchtower Documents.

Deaf School Versus Mainstream School

Hearing parents of a Deaf child: What are the differences between Deaf schools and Mainstream schools.

This video is for especially hearing parents of a Deaf child. This video shows and explains the differences between Deaf schools and Mainstream schools, hopefully to help you make informed decisions for your Deaf child, whether you should send your Deaf child to a Deaf school (also called a Deaf Institute, a school for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children) or if you should mainstream your Deaf child.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

For those who do not know what mainstream means, the mainstream definition from the Merriam-Webster dictionary reads, “to place (a student, such as a disabled child) in regular school classes”. Basically, it means to send your Deaf child to a hearing school, or mainstream school as some people call it. There are a few different options of mainstreaming.

Few public mainstream schools have Deaf & Hard of Hearing (D/HH) programs at mainstream schools… some Deaf children stay in the D/HH program all day, some others are mainstreamed into hearing classes for a part or all of the day accompanied by sign language interpreters. Another option of mainstreaming is to send your Deaf child to a school that does not have a Deaf / Hard of Hearing program, meaning your Deaf child would be mainstreamed in hearing classes all day, usually accompanied by a sign language interpreter and sometimes that also means your Deaf child could be the only Deaf kid at school or sometimes there may be a few other Deaf students also. These mainstreaming options are not mentioned in the video but will be discussed in a future video.

Quick statistics re: Deaf children- 2 or 3 in every 1,000 children here in the United States are born Deaf or Hard of Hearing (nad.org) and most of Deaf children, more than 90%, are born to hearing parents. And about 86% of Deaf students are in mainstream schools.

This video features a short campus tour of a school for the Deaf, a residential school for Deaf children at California School For The Deaf in Fremont.

The tour guide compares Deaf schools and mainstream schools and discusses the benefits and advantages of attending a residential Deaf school vs. attending a mainstream school. The tour guide also shares about Deaf Education, how different Deaf education is in mainstream schools compared to Deaf schools, which is very different… a very informative video for hearing parents who are wanting to learn more about Deaf education and options for their Deaf child.

Be sure to watch the following video after this, an interview with a Deaf football coach who strongly believes that Deaf children should go to Deaf schools. In the interview we talked about the pros and cons re: Deaf schools- both benefits & advantages and disadvantages. Link here: https://youtu.be/YGaxh0P4Vb4

Building Bridges Within The Deaf Community

"Building bridges within and beyond the Deaf community" Florida college education professor, Dr. Michella Maiorana-Basas.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- Flagler College Education Professor Dr. Michella Maiorana-Basas discusses how to build bridges of understanding within and beyond the Deaf community, as well as the development of better connections between the local Deaf and Hearing communities in St. Augustine, Florida.

According to Maiorana-Basas, divisions within the Deaf community regarding communicative and educational approaches have created political tension within the field. In her talk, she will discuss how professionals are working toward finding a place of unity and understanding, while remaining true to their philosophical identity. The partnerships, she said, are crucial to advancing progress in the Deaf education field.

Another area worth exploring, she added, is the development of better connections between the local Deaf and Hearing communities in St. Augustine.

“There is potential for developing strong partnerships that would help Deaf individuals feel more supported, and would contribute positively to their overall success,” Maiorana-Basas said. “The key is communication and having an understanding of the needs of the Deaf community.”

In her “Foundations of Deaf Education” course, the Flagler professor has been working with students to find more creative ways of building those bridges between community members, businesses and Deaf community. Her Community Lectures Series talk with address these issues, and possible opportunities of collaboration.

Nyle DiMarco Wants To Empower Others Who Are Deaf

Deaf News: 'Dancing with the Stars' winner wants to empower others who are Deaf in the United States and the world.

When Nyle DiMarco was asked to join season 22 of "Dancing with the Stars," he almost turned down the opportunity.

"I'd never danced in my whole entire life," DiMarco says. "If I failed in the first week that means millions of people would view Deaf people as people that can't dance."

But the Deaf model and actor decided to take on the challenge.

During a rehearsal, professional dance partner Peta Murgatroyd cranked the music up so DiMarco could feel the vibrations.

"When we danced, it really just threw me off," he says. "I told Peta I've always been Deaf. I'm not used to sound, so I think it's better if we dance without the sound. And after that we did better."

Not only did they do better, they won the competition on May 24.

"We ended on a good note," he says with a smile.

DiMarco was born in Queens, New York.

"We have over 25 Deaf individuals in my family," he explains. "It is genetic, but there's only 10% of Deaf people that actually come from Deaf families."

His twin brother Nico and older brother Neal are Deaf, as are his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

"I really consider myself fortunate having that communication access," the 27-year-old says. "My whole family knows American Sign Language."

Because of that, growing up Deaf wasn't an issue. He credits his mom Donna for helping him integrate into the hearing world.

"My mom did a great job because ever since I was born she would put me into any type of sporting activity with hearing teams," he says. "My mom would often send me out to play with the neighbors, so I felt like I had the best of both worlds."

DiMarco went on to graduate with a degree in mathematics from Gallaudet University, a private university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Washington, D.C.

"In middle school, I had the best math teacher I've ever had, and he was Deaf...and I felt inspired by him," he recalls. "I knew from then on that I wanted to be a math teacher."

But his life took a different turn when Hollywood came calling.

The producers of the TV drama ‘Switched at Birth’ approached him on social media to play a Deaf character on the show.

Then "America's Next Top Model" producers invited him to audition for season 22, after discovering him on Instagram.

But being on the modeling reality show wasn't easy.

"I had to live with the models in one big house for two months, 24 hours a day. Only a few of them actually learned how to sign ... I couldn't really communicate with anybody and I felt isolated," he remembers. "I just remained optimistic and I was like, 'I'm gonna win this show.'"
And he did.

"I'm very visual and through those visual cues, I was able to absorb it really fast," he says.
The win led DiMarco to a modeling contract.

"All within one year, my life just completely flipped for the better."

Now he wants to put his celebrity to good use. He recently founded the Nyle DiMarco Foundation to help people in the Deaf community gain access to American Sign Language.

"There's 70 million Deaf people in this world and only 2% of them have access to education in sign language," he says. "We're talking about millions of Deaf kids without language, without education."
DiMarco wants to change that.

"What people don't realize is we have our own beautiful culture. To Deaf kids, they should always find the ability in a disability ... if you do then you will do great things in life."

Joshua Beckman: No More Deaf Schools?

Do you care about Deaf Schools? by Joshua Beckman.

The video producer by Joshua Beckman also known as vlogger posted on YouTube social networking for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. This vlog in ASL storytelling of the Deaf Schools and education the community.

You care about Deaf schools right? Well I too, care about the Deaf schools.

Did you know that many of those schools endure hardship? What struggles are there, you might ask? Lack of moral support from the government, community, staff, administration, teachers, parents. Support is naught and hard to find. There are funding constraints as well.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Now you are watching me in disbelief. Worrying, disappointed; feeling angry, frustrated, heart-wrenched. Me too, I am in the exact same boat as you are.

What can the Deaf community do to help? There is a solution… but it is not an imminent fix. They are as following:

1) All Deaf schools must have at least 75% Deaf people working there. What I meant by 75% is, for instance: chefs, landscape maintenance workers, custodians, teachers, education assistants, staff, support staff, administration et cetera. All positions available must be at least 75% employed by Deaf people.

With that being said, the system itself must change first. How? We, the Deaf people take initiative with the due process.

2) The names of the Deaf schools themselves must change.

It all boils down to the word ‘for’ inside the name of the school. It bears a negative connotation. Essentially it means a population for you [hearing people] to serve, and to provide support. The word ‘for’ is archaic. Why don't we use Deaf schools instead? More positive. That term is a direct reflection of the Deaf community

3) Deaf E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N, we must take back what belongs to us.

We decide. We control. We govern and modify policies accordingly. Not them, hearing people. The government workers must no longer be in such position with power. Again, we decide. Doing so, we all must collaborate together, collectively.

The people who worked on this VLOG.

Crab Theory in Deaf Community: Gallaudet

Crab Theory in Deaf Community and Gallaudet University.

The "Crab Theory" is used in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community as a metaphor to describe the tendency of some Deaf people to criticize or put down the successes or achievements of other Deaf people.

It may take several different forms: malicious and negative gossip, grudges, social rejection, etc., and is directed against Deaf community leaders, successful Deaf business entrepreneurs or educational administrators, Deaf individuals who go to college while their Deaf peers never get beyond high school, Deaf people who "don't act Deaf enough", even ordinary Deaf individuals who do such positive things as buying a new car or marrying a good person.

The analogy is to a bucket of live crabs: whenever one crab attempts to escape the bucket by climbing out of it, the others reach up and pull it back down. The result, of course, is that no crab succeeds in escaping the bucket. Other groups, especially other minority groups, also use the "crab theory" to describe similar negativity within their own communities, but the "crab theory" is probably more widely mentioned and discussed within the Deaf community than in any other group.

This brief paper cannot attempt an analysis of the sometimes-complex psychological reasons for the practice of the "crab theory". However, certain common elements that tend to contribute to this phenomenon can be identified in the Deaf community.

Jealousy is often involved, of course: one Deaf person sees another Deaf person become successful while s/he still is not, so the first Deaf person tries to minimize feelings of "inferiority" by putting down the other Deaf person's success.

This likely arises out of the low self-esteem frequently seen among Deaf people, often brought on from low expectations set for them by hearing parents and hearing educators, as well as from oppression by those same hearing persons (see related Deaf FAQ on Audism).

This attitude by hearing authorities and parents that "Deaf people can't" gets internalized by many Deaf persons during their formative years and carries into adulthood. Self-oppression and internecine strife is a common result of low self-esteem in the Deaf community. To learn more about crab theory in the Deaf community - Read The Full Story.

How Many Senses Do Deaf People Have?

The number doesn't actually matter. What's cool to realize is that it's way more than we previously thought. What's important is that the level, sensitivity, and use that HUMANS get out of a sense isn't uniform across the board. No matter how we may appear to fit the current social construct of 'normal.'

Why does this happen? Because of biodiversity. And the concept of biodiversity is important why?

Many reasons. Here's a big one:

Because the social model of disability has told us for years, that, "while physical, sensory, intellectual, or psychological variations may cause individual functional limitation or impairments, these do not have to lead to a disability unless society fails to take account of and include people regardless of their individual differences."

With so much diversity of ability happening in every single person on the planet, it's amazing that a large majority have banded together to consider themselves "normal" (read: everybody is the exact same) while others are not. "The difference between the needs that many disabled people have and the needs of people who are not labelled as disabled is that non-disabled people have had their dependencies normalized. The world has been built to accommodate certain needs and call the people who need those things independent, while other needs are considered exception." (AJ Withers, "Disability Politics and Theory")

When we realize that we all have different abilities, and consequently, different needs, dependencies that are very real, even though they have been largely 'normalized.' Maybe this helps us see ourselves in others with a little bit more empathy, maybe we find a bit more compassion from within, maybe we recognize our humanity a bit more markedly, and maybe, we can build a more inclusive future. Holcomb: The Deaf Family of Five Generations

The Holcomb Family: Five generations of one family.

Leala Holcomb created a personal historical documentary on her 5-generation Deaf family's experiences in Deaf education for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention conference in 2013.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

Leala Holcomb learned from her parents and grandparents that American Sign Language--English bilingualism is not an old approach to educating Deaf children. Why? Sign language was banned from all classrooms until 1970s. In contrast, the listening and spoken language approach has always been enforced as the primary and sole mode of communication in Deaf education, including the signing schools, for at least over a hundred years. Signing schools only meant Deaf kids were able to sign during recess and dorm.

Very fascinating video on the history of Deaf education and debunks the false narrative that sign language in Deaf education is "old" and spoken language is "new" while the opposite is true.

In the end of the video, her 5-year-old nephew talks about his experiences receiving education in languages that are fully accessible to him without any frustrations and struggles gives her hope that they are going in the right direction by giving all Deaf children whole through American Sign Language and English (in all modalities).

Disclaimer: Leala Holcomb recognize that including educational degrees in their introduction violates Deaf culture norms. Due to the classist and elitist nature of the EHDI conference, Holcomb felt the need to include this background information in order to show sign language was not detrimental to their academic success which is contradictory to the mainstream ideology and perspective.

Holcomb also want to point out that their white privilege has afforded us and continue to give their opportunities many other People of Color Deaf people did not have and still do not have in our educational system.

The narratives shared in the video demonstrate White, mostly professional-class, Sighted, some Abled multi-generational Deaf experiences.

Trigger Warnings: Audism, phonocentricism, and cultural abuse through both psychological and physical means.
